Aussie historian, author & entertainer Jim Haynes joins Overnight each week for his unique knowledge of the not-so-famous characters from Australia's history. This week Jim shines the spotlight on James Tyson – Australia's first self-made millionaire. James Tyson (1819-1898), pastoralist, was born on 8 April 1819 near Narellan, New South Wales. By 1898 Tyson held 5,329,214 acres including 352,332 acres freehold. His stations included Tupra, Juanbung, Bangate, Goondublui and Mooroonowa in New South Wales; Heyfield in Victoria; and Glenormiston, Swanvale, Meteor Downs and Albinia Downs, Babbiloora, Carnarvon, Tully, Wyobie, Felton, Mount Russell and Tinnenburra in Queensland. Tyson was a member of the Queensland Legislative Council in 1893-98 but made only one short speech. He was a magistrate on the Maude, New South Wales, and Jondaryan, Queensland, benches, and a prominent lobbyist against the building of the Queensland transcontinental railway line by overseas capitalists on the land grant system; he opposed the Victorian border stock tax and campaigned actively for the land tenure reforms embodied in the Crown Lands Acts of 1884 in New South Wales and 1885 in Queensland. Generous to a wide range of charities, he contributed £2000 for two years to the New South Wales Sudan Contingent and variously to the building funds of the Women's College, University of Sydney, and the Church of England at Leyburn. Fairhursts catering has, like many other businesses, been hit by the current lockdown. They have been in the business of providing delicious food since the 80's and specialise in catering for events and weddings. Working out from their kitchen in Swinithwaite, in Wensleydale, they would usually be busy serving teas and catering for weddings at Bolton Castle as well as running their popular farmshop and cafe at Berrys. This year was projected to be one of their best so far with over 30 weddings and most weekends booked, however no one could have predicted the situation we all currently find ourselves in. So what to do? They began providing locals in isolation with free delivery of their delicious ready cooked meals, not realising how popular this service would become. They have had to totally change the way they are operating and now, what began as a small venture, has blossomed into a busy service with around 400 scrumptious meals wending their way weekly to grateful recipients. The dales are quiet at the moment, restaurants, cafes and pubs are closed. So, for any of you fancying a night off cooking and top quality food, Guy talks about their plans for the future, expansion to further afield and what his company is doing to keep the business operating. Empowered Relationship Podcast: Your Relationship Resource And Guide
In this episode, I talk with Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn about the film Ordinary Love. Bleecker Street's ORDINARY LOVE, starring Academy Award® nominees Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread”) and Liam Neeson (“Schlinder’s List”). Following its critically acclaimed debut at TIFF, ORDINARY LOVE hit theaters on Valentine's Day, February 14th, and follows the story of an everyday couple with a remarkable love. The film is directed by Irish filmmaking duo Lisa Barros D’Sa & Glenn Leyburn (“Good Vibrations,” “Cherrybomb”) with a screenplay from the award-winning playwright Owen McCafferty. (Please listen to the podcast episode or read the transcript to hear explanations, stories and examples.) In this episode, Lisa Barros D'Sa, Glenn Leyburn and Dr. Jessica Higgins discuss: A love story of a middle-aged couple. The warmth, humor, and connection that comes from a deep level of intimacy. When confronted with a major hardship, we have the opportunity to uplift each other and keep each other afloat. With a major health issue, there is an individual journey as well as a couple journey. When we attempt to protect our partner from our pain, we often feel isolated. What honesty, acceptance, strength and courage can look like within a relationship during painful times. How life's difficulties can separate us and bring us back together again. Collaboration through mutual trust and respect. An everyday couple with a remarkable love, there is an ease to their relationship which only comes from spending a lifetime together. When Joan is unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer, the course of her treatment shines a light on their relationship as they are faced with the challenges that lie ahead and the prospect of what might happen if something were to happen to her. Co-directors Lisa Barros D’sa (Good Vibration) and Glenn Leyburn (Cherrybomb) join us to talk about their collaboration with two top tier actors, striking a balance in the tone and look for their extraordinarily empathetic look at two people who truly care about each other.
