Paul Skenes took the mound today and looked dominant through 5, and then the wheels came off. We discuss the pitching, the lack off offense from everyone not named Peguero, and Donnie Ball. But seriously, THREE homers from Liover Peguero? What a game from him and should we see even more from him? Post-Gazette Pirates insider Colin Beazley joins host Adam Bittner to react to news that the club has traded Ke'Bryan Hayes to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for veteran reliever Taylor Rogers and prospect Sammy Stafura ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Did GM Ben Cherington get enough in return for his third baseman who's struggled with the plate but owns one of the best gloves in the game at his position? Can Stafura develop in this system where names like Liover Peguero, Nick Gonzales and others have not over the years? What can we expect from Jared Triolo and the likely new every day third baseman? And what does this deal signal about Cherington's intentions with Mitch Keller, David Bednar and others? Our duo tackles those questions and more. The Pirates stay hot with a 3-1 win over the Giants, led by Bailey Falter's crafty start, Tommy Pham's continued tear, and three perfect innings from Braxton Ashcraft. On his weekly mailbag podcast, Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles answers reader questions. Among them: Will owner Bob Nutting consider selling the team after its slow start to 2025 and amid relentless scrutiny from fans? Are Billy Cook and Nick Yorke MLB caliber players? Or just more bad trade returns for GM Ben Cherington? Will 2024 first-round MLB draft pick Konnor Griffin be promoted more quickly through the minor league system as a result of his early success? Should Cherington trade from his pitching surplus with names like Mitch Keller, Bubba Chandler and Hunter Barco to acquire more capable bats for his lineup? Will Matt Gorski, Henry Davis and Liover Peguero ever get regular MLB playing time?
In our latest podcast episode, we discuss my recent trip to Greensboro to watch the Grasshoppers for an entire week.Which players stood out? Is the Javier Rivas start of the season legitimate, and what have been the key factors in his breakout? The Pirates' pitching factory might have a legitimate breakout in Antwone Kelly, an international signing who hit triple-digits in his start last week. Is it just the fastball, or does he have a well-rounded arsenal? Is Shalin Polanco heading for a breakout, and what might help him get there? We then shift to Altoona and the fantastic start to the year from Hunter Barco. Is he a potential top 100 arm, and what pitching prospects would you take ahead of him in the Pirates' system right now? Finally, we talk about Liover Peguero. On their weekly Pirates mailbag video, Post-Gazette insiders Noah Hiles and Andrew Destin answer reader questions from spring training in Bradenton, Fla. Are there any prime candidates for a contract extension this spring, given that the Pirates have handed one out to a key piece in each of the last three years? With Matt Gorski producing well during spring training, could we see him lock up a spot on the opening day roster? What does the future hold for fringe infield prospects like Ji Hwan Bae and Liover Peguero? What about stalwart backup catcher Jason Delay? Will new hitting coach Matt Hague focus more on small ball due to the Pirates lineup's lack of major power hitters? And with the return of Daniel Vogelbach, which other former Pirate would Noah and Andrew like to see return in a special adviser's role? Our duo answers those questions and more.

On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to the Pirates' decision to designate first baseman Rowdy Tellez for assignment four plate appearances short of a $200,000 bonus in his contract. Was this a cheap move by manager Derek Shelton and GM Ben Cherington. Will it hurt perception of the club among MLB free agents this winter? And will the club really learn enough about Liover Peguero and Joshua Palacios -- the minors leaguers replacing Tellez and Michael A. Taylor on the roster -- to justify the move? Later, Jason gives his thoughts on coach Mike Tomlin noncommittal stance about Justin Fields as the Steelers' starting quarterback over Russell Wilson. And reacts to the Penguins' NHL preseason home opener Tuesday night at PPG Paints Arena, a 3-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres.
Andrew could see Liover Peguero being recalled to the majors to play some short with Oneil Cruz playing center field. Paul thinks Henry David should start playing at first. Andrew thinks, off major surgery, Endy Rodriguez should be considered at first base.
Hour 2 with Paul Zeise: Pirates reporter Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette joined the show. Andrew could see Liover Peguero being recalled to the majors to play some short with Oneil Cruz playing center field. Martavis Bryant was cut by the Commanders. Would you bring him back? What are the top stories in college football at the start of 2024?
Hour 1 with Joe Starkey and Paul Zeise: The bad: the Pirates lost again to the Oakland A's. The good: Paul Skenes dominated again in Indianapolis. It's time to bring up Nick Gonzales, Liover Peguero, and Ji Hwan Bae. Skenes should be here now, but May 10 seems possible. Deion Sanders and family embarked on a Twitter war today with a former player. Poni has reported a DK Metcalf trade is not happening. Zeise thinks Brandon Aiyuk fits the Steelers better than Debo Samuel, but Starkey likes the weapon Samuel brings. Nashville stayed alive last night in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
93.7 The Fan Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn joined the show. Paul Skenes needs to debut at PNC Park and would be odd if he doesn't. At this point, why not try guys like Nick Gonzales and Liover Peguero in the majors? Jeff thinks it's a good price for Najee Harris to return on his fifth-year option and would pick it up.

The Pirates only had two hits against the A's in a 5-1 loss. It was as bad as it sounds and multiple double plays to end potential rallies. They lead the league striking out looking. Joe calls on Bob Nutting to step in and force a change at hitting coach and Andy Haines has to go. Starkey wants him to be like Art Rooney did and step in to get rid of Haines like Matt Canada. It's time for Nick Gonzales, Liover Peguero, and Ji Hwan Bae to come to the majors. What would our ideal lineup look like?

Making history is something that is usually followed by celebration, but for the Pirates offense, that is far from the case. The Pirates offense continues to struggle, and the statistics back up that notion, so what do they at this point of futility offensively to get off their historically low offensive outputs? Also, changes need to be made with the offense at some point, be it a call-up or a change in philosophy. Speaking of potential call-ups, both Nick Gonzales and Liover Peguero are off to hot starts in Indianapolis, so, could a call-up for one, or both, be in the near future? Finally, the Pirates look to even the series vs the A's on Tuesday evening, and host Ethan Smith has your game two preview. In his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey answers reader questions. Among them: When will the Pirates call up Paul Skenes to see his first Major League action? And when will former call-ups including Nick Gonzales, Liover Peguero and Ji Hawn Bae get their next chances now that they're hitting well in the minors? He also gets into season-ending Penguins questions. Which players from the current lineup should be sent packing after the team missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs this week? Is there any chance that GM Kyle Dubas moves on from core players including Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson? And on the Steelers front, who's the most likely first round pick heading into next week's NFL draft? Is it Oregon's Jackson Powers-Johnson? And what are the odds GM Omar Khan finishes a deal for reported trade target Brandon Aiyuk of the San Francisco 49ers? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On the Pitching In podcast this week, Post-Gazette insider Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to break down all the biggest storylines from Pirates spring training in Bradenton, Fla. Will GM Ben Cherington add to this rotation in meaningful ways before the season begins? Or will names like Chase Anderson and Jared Jones be the most likely to join the likes of Mitch Keller, Marco Gonzales and Martin Perez on the opening day staff? Are prospects like Roansy Contreras and Quinn Priester squandering their opportunities? And how did guys like Paul Skenes look in the MLB Breakout game against the Orioles? Our duo tackles those topics as well as some lineup questions. How seriously should we take strong springs from Henry Davis and Oneil Cruz? Is a quiet spring from Rowdy Tellez and concern? How are things shaping up in right field? What about the second base competition between Liover Peguero, Jared Triolo and others? And is this team poised to go over or under the Vegas win total of 74.5 wins? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It's been almost two weeks now for Pirates Spring Training in Bradenton, FL, and a lot has happened so far. We have rumors swirling that prospect Jared Jones is actually battling for a rotation spot opposed to ultimately being sent down to Triple-A to 'work on things' as most prospects do this time of year. The second base battle has been something to monitor and so far its been a pretty tight battle. Jared Triolo, Liover Peguero, and even Nick Gonzales have had a solid showing through the early part of March. The Pirates just signed pitcher Eric Lauer to an MiLB deal and we also talk a little about him as well as the upcoming MLB Spring Breakout game between the Orioles and Pirates. Hour 3 with Joe Starkey and Paul Zeise: John Perrotto of Pittsburgh Sports Now joined the show. John is excited to see Paul Skenes make his spring training debut. His status is significant dating Livvy Dunne and being one of the best pitching prospects in years. John doesn't think Skenes will be overworked this season and could see 160 innings. The Athletic's Jim Bowden thinks Skenes will be up in September, but we all think before that, with around the All-Star break the latest. John would bat Ke'Bryan Hayes leadoff, then Bryan Reynolds second. Cruz third, Suwinski fourth. He thinks Henry Davis will be in Indianapolis. The Penguins have won three in a row. Could Kyle Dubas stand pat at the trade deadline? Unless the Pens are willing to trade stars, the roster is not going to significantly change.
We are live inside LECOM Park for today's Spring Home Opener vs. the Baltimore Orioles. This marks our first look at the $77 million man, Mitch Keller who takes the mount today. Also, Oneil Cruz makes his 2024 return to baseball that can bring so much excitement to this team. Pirates insider Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette joined the show. Jason has talked to Mitch Keller extensively and is betting on Keller's makeup and ability. Jason thinks it's possible to get another extension done with... David Bednar. Jason said the Pirates and Marlins came close on an Edward Cabrera deal, but the Marlins considerably raised the price. He believes Liover Peguero will be the starting second baseman and Nick Gonzales hasn't shown anything. Paul Skenes outlook. 30/30 for Oneil Cruz is a possibility.

On today's episode of Locked On Pirates, host Ethan Smith is joined by Gary Morgan in the continuation of the "An Eye at the Future" series. Today is all about the second base position for the Pirates, a position that will likely have 2024 Spring Training's most heated battle for rights to be the starter. With players like Liover Peguero, Nick Gonzales, Ji-hwan Bae and Jared Triolo all viable options for the position, what does each guy offer the Pirates and who ultimately wins the starting job out of spring? And when talking about second base, you have to talk about Termarr Johnson? Is he the be all end all at the position or will someone step up before he arrives? On their weekly baseball show, Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Jason Mackey and Andrew Destin analyze general manager Ben Cherington's comments to reporters earlier this week. What is his vision for the starting rotation beyond Mitch Keller and Johan Oviedo? Can names like Quinn Priester, Roansy Contreras and Luis Ortiz help? Or will free agents be needed to fill the void? What are the options at second base if Oneil Cruz is healthy enough to retake his spot at shortstop? Is that position Liover Peguero's to lose? And where do names including Nick Gonzales, Henry Davis and Miguel Andujar fit into the club's future? Our duo tackles those topics and more.
