This episode is a deep dive on the challenges Qantas has been facing. While Qantas is unlike any company we invest in, we believe there are many lessons for our founders and investors to take away. In this episode we discuss:  The challenges all companies face in trying to balance the short term vs the long term, and some examples of this conflict to navigate.  How incentives drive behaviors, and some ideas for founders and investors in designing interlinked goals, KPI's and remuneration systems to ensure healthy outcomes over the long term. The reality that leadership changes often happening in a crisis, and how founders, executives and boards should think about setting the transition up.  A deep dive into an organisational lifecycle model, and compare CEO's and companies like Luke Anear of Safety Culture and Vanessa Hudson of Qantas in terms of the different realities their lifecycle locations will be creating for them.    Lastly, we discuss the challenges of having to navigate a company through a crisis, while also fielding a media firestorm which applies daily pressure on every word, behaviour and decision. We pose some strategies for how companies should operate in this unique situation. As always we'd love to hear from you, and we'd really appreciate if you could leave a quick rating on the podcast. hello@tribeglobal.vc

Today's Founder Focus guest is Luke Anear of Safety Culture https://safetyculture.com/. You know you've built an outlier business when investors are constantly knocking on your door to invest, including an offer of $500 Million at a $5 Billion valuation. But you're probably also an outlier founder by knocking back that offer, and 99% of other offers too. This is very much a story behind the story type episode where Luke shares how he and his team managed to go from $0 to $1 Million revenue, then $1 Million to $100 Million in just a few short years, with sights now firmly set on $1 Billion and $10 Billion in revenue. A big ambition, but believable given the confidence he demonstrates and the foundations built to support that growth.   Luke shares how not only his role in Safety Culture has transitioned over time, but how he himself has grown, and shares experiences that helped cultivate humility, self-awareness and vulnerability. There are a number of prescriptive examples that founders can use within their teams to challenge people to achieve results they never thought were possible, and how to build resilience to deal with the inevitable times of up and down. We talk about the pros and cons of starting out in a regional area, and why their headquarters ultimately moved to Sydney. We also discuss journalism and the reporting of start-ups in general, along with ASIC's rules around the reporting of private company information and the effect that can have on an ecosystem. Now there's a bonus bit included at the end that came out of the usual post podcast discussion thanking our guests for their time. We've included this as it's an important message to remind founders they aren't alone in a range of mental health experiences that can be par for the course in this chosen endeavour.   We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed creating it, and as always we'd love to hear any thoughts and comments.  Go to www.tribeglobal.vc

Welcome to Tribe Talkin' Episode 3.  This week we talk about Safety Culture raising $34 Million at a $2.7 Billion valuation, $600 Million higher than their last raise. This bucks the trend we've seen in valuations and we discuss some interesting aspects of the Safety Culture story. And spoiler alert! We have the Founder, Luke Anear on next week's Founder Focus episode and we're looking forward to a deep dive. We see Safety Culture's raise as a signal that the markets are in a good place We also talk about Rokt moving towards its IPO. Their "party" culture is also under the microscope at the moment, and we talk about how such cultures are being currently viewed. We discuss episode 2 of the series “The Founder”, featuring Canva and its founders Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrect and Cameron Adams. We unpack the parts of the story we found most interesting, and try and distil lessons for entrepreneurs to consider in their own journey. Other news includes Airtree warning there will be more failures, and why we think it's interesting they felt compelled to even do that, given the business we are all in. We talk about the Openview Partners report into VC valuations, which provides some really interesting insights into the current valuation trajectory, as well as visually demonstrating which companies get the highest valuations and why. https://openviewpartners.com/2022-saas-benchmarks-report/ This report provides an excellent dataset on the growth rates achieved with companies that have diversity in their management team.  This is an excellent segue way into our deep dive subject which is diversity in STEM, and the recent draft recommendations from the Diversity in STEM review which was published this week. https://www.industry.gov.au/science-technology-and-innovation/diversity-stem-review Whilst diversity and equality is a core value of Tribe, STEM industries are the lifeblood of the companies we invest in. As such, this is an extremely important topic for VC investors, and the founders we invest in. As always we appreciate feedback, and don't forget to leave a rating whilst you're here. www.tribeglobal.vc  hello@tribeglobal.vc

Welcome to episode one of Tribe Talkin', a format where the Tribe team discusses issues hitting news rooms, as well as sharing a core concept relevant to venture capital and high growth businesses.  In this episode we discuss "The Founder", a documentary brought to life by Luke Anear from SafetyCulture, documenting Luke's behind the scene journey alongside other founders like Canva's Melanie Perkins,  Brighte's Katherine McConnell and Finder's Fred Schebesta https://if.com.au/founder-trailer/  The series aims to capture the deep uncertainty, doubt, and struggle founders face in trying to create something from nothing. One journo describes it as one big circle jerk! Hhmm. It's not every day we get to reference a circle jerk in a podcast, but here we are. We talk about local VC news- that 9 VC funds are reported to be currently raising captive funds and what we think that means for the Australian VC industry.  We look at the Blackbird manifesto focused on start-ups coming out of research institutions. It describes some structural barriers stopping effective knowledge transfer flowing out of universities.  https://www.blackbird.vc/foundry  For our concept deep dive, we look at sole Founder's vs Co-Founder teams, and the reason we prefer multi-founders from a personal and investment perspective. Whilst we talk about the reasons we prefer these Co-Founding teams, we also discuss the big issue that sometimes plagues them: conflict. Yet whilst conflict is inevitable, it is desirable in the right conditions, and we give a few simple ideas on how to manage it. The full blog article on the topic can be found here: https://tribeglobal.vc/why-co-founders-teams/    As with all our content, we've love to hear from you, especially if you have a different view. If you like what you hear, we'd really appreciate if you can rate the podcast and any comments are always welcome.   https://tribeglobal.vc/   hello@tribeglobal.vc

High school dropout Luke Anear didn't set out to build a global technology company that was recently valued at over $2billion, but that's exactly what happened when he saw a problem in the workplace – namely accidents that didn't have to happen – and started to help solve it. Luke created his mobile safety and quality checklist app that became SafetyCulture. Now, Luke's vision is expanding, with grand designs to build a global e-marketplace for any consumables used in a workplace, from work boots to chefs' aprons, a kind of Amazon for the workplace, as he describes it. And ever wondered why those big global tech stocks have staggeringly high valuations? Well, Luke gives a feisty explanation of why they're not ridiculous! Plus, he shares some heart-felt thoughts on sudden wealth and what to do with it. Enjoy Part 2 of my chat with Luke Anear. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When Luke Anear worked as a private investigator  investigating workplace mishaps and chasing workers' compo cheats, he realised he wanted to turn that negative into a positive. So he set about helping companies vastly improve their safety procedures in the workplace, to try and prevent workers having accidents in the first place. His little startup took shape in the proverbial garage of his suburban Townsville home, and he began slowly, selling safety checklists delivered on Word documents. But then Luke Anear transformed his little business baby into a multi-million dollar global technology empire, when he and a uni dropout mate created an app, called iAuditor -- essentially a mobile safety checklist app to suit each individual workplace. That completely changed Luke Anear's life, and set SafetyCulture on course to become a $2 billion Aussie success story. How that has mushroomed to now service almost 28,000 customers around the world, and what Luke Anear has learned along the way from the smartest venture capital investors in the room, including mentors and supporters like Atlassian's Scott Farquhar is a story and a half. Plus what Luke learned and how he navigated the panic-struck arrival of the COVID pandemic offers lessons for most entrepreneurs. Hope you enjoy Luke Anear! One of the central themes in that is the learning curve in making better decisions, which is the subject of this week's podcast.    Ashik and his co-founder Steve Shelley founded Deputy ten years ago after grappling with scaling issues at Steve's previous company where Ashik worked. As they fixed a lot of the problems, many people in Ashik's network would enquire how it had happened. The problem of managing work and workers was huge so they decided to fix it.  Bootstrapped for 8 years they relied on whatever they were earning in MRR to grow the company, which called for a specific kind of decisions making - never too long term but always fast-paced. Two years ago, they signed a term sheet with OpenView and have been doubling in size each year since.   Listen on to learn: The most impactful advice Ashik ever got about making decisions What aside from applying that framework is essential for making good decisions in a fast-growing SaaS company An example of how Ashik made the decision to go with Openview after pitching to 27 other VC companies On December 6th in Sydney, Ashik will be joined by other exciting speakers such as Alex Fala, CEO, VendHQ, Luke Anear, CEO, Safety Culture and Kirsti Grant, CEO Populate and HOP Ventures. I'm also excited about another new beginning, something of a birth I suppose as well.  Safety on Tap Connected, the worlds first growth accelerator designed for health and safety professionals, launched on the 29th of May 2017.  I can't tell you how pumped I am to have our founding member group starting to accelerate their growth. I've had plenty of enquiries about membership after the deadline though, since we were only open for one week.  As our founders group settles down into the rhythm of ongoing growth and development through our coaching, community, content and contemplation, we may open up again for more new members in the future.  So if you think Safety on Tap Connected is right to help you grow, you need to be on the waiting list at safetyontap.com, and I'll let you know when we open the doors again.
