Struggling to care for aging parents while juggling your own family? Today, Bina Coleman discusses the challenges of being part of the sandwich generation and the importance of finding support groups and resources. She also talks about the future of Parent Projects, a company that helps families stay organized and communicate with each other about caring for elderly loved ones, including the use of artificial intelligence to help families better care for their aging parents. Don't miss out! Learn how to make caring for your aging parents a little easier. --- Listen to the podcast here How Parent Projects Can Help You Care For Elderly Loved Ones With Bina Colman Hello and welcome to the podcast, Growing Older with Gusto. My name is Gail Zugerman, and my husband, Charlie, likes to joke that his name is Gusto. But actually, this podcast is created to show people in younger generations how to grow older in a positive and productive way by having guests on the show who are doing just that or helping others to do just that. Today, we have an episode about the sandwich generation, and I don't necessarily mean those of you who grew up eating subs or hoagies or Philadelphia cheesesteaks, whatever. So, our guest today is a younger woman named Bina Coleman, who's going to tell us how she started her business out of seeing a need in the marketplace for balancing a full-time career, raising young kids, and having elderly parents who had health care needs of their own. It is a juggling act, one that's been addressed by the media, but Bina Coleman saw an opportunity, and she's very busy with her own life. She lives outside of Phoenix, Arizona, and she managed to find the time to create her original business, which was called Compassionate Callers, and it's recently morphed into Parent Projects, which she'll talk about. But it's a business targeted to those people who need support with numerous activities that are busy, and her business was set up to really help people who are in the sandwich generation have peace of mind and know that their elderly parents are living a good older life while they maintain theirs. She also has a degree in gerontology and over a decade of experience in the field of elderly care. So, I'd like to get started; she has so much to tell us. She has a great story. So welcome to the show, Bina. Thank you for that introduction. It was very good. It was a great introduction. It's all true. There are so many of us. Right, so start us out. Tell our listeners about your story, about your background, and your personal experiences that led to the development of Parent Projects. I grew up here in Phoenix, and my parents actually owned the first four franchises of Home Instead Senior Care. I was in sixth grade, so in 1996, they were literally one of the first home care agencies in Arizona or Phoenix, and now there's over 500, I want to say. Growing up, this is all we heard: the elder world, the seniors, the caregivers, so my brother and I just knew this world when none of our friends did. The Sandwich-Generation Caregiver When it was time for me to get my degree, it was kind of a no-brainer to do gerontology, though it's extremely niche, and there's not many of us. But fast forward, I am married, I have two little kids; they're still little. So, even back when my father was living in a memory care facility and then passed, they were even younger. But I truly became a sandwich generation caregiver because I was working full time. I was doing sales for home care, home health, and hospice, and I was also visiting my dad, like I said, in a memory care unit. We were lucky enough to place them in a beautiful place in Scottsdale, so that was wonderful, truthfully. But, you know, I'd show up with both kids and just think there's something missing in this continuum of care for everybody, memory or not, or whatever maybe they're going through. I thought there's something missing, and that's where Compassionate Callers actually real...

Always with a broad smile and a caring demeanor, Gabriel is dedicated to improving the lives of all his clients and works towards building a company culture of goodwill and service above self. Thanks to Gabriel's efforts the “Be a Santa to a Senior” non-profit program has become a fixture for the past ten years at the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce's Annual Holiday Party. He is also active on the local committee of the Alzheimer's Association of South Florida and the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of South Miami. “The look of surprise on a senior's face when they receive an unexpected gift with their name on it continues to inspire.” Gabriel is married and has two young boys. When Asked What is the best thing about serving aging adults: “Aside from the knowledge and the wisdom that they share, it's just an overall good feeling. We come from a large family, so it's natural for both my sister and I. My mom had me at 45 years old and she's 90 now. So she's still dropping dimes and lessons on us.”What Organization Deserves a Shout Out?“The Gentleman's Journal is an organization here founded in Miami and it is family first business second, honor both profit and be your brother's keeper. So they focus on being a good man at home and being a good entrepreneur and being a good representative for your community.”Hot Marketing Tip/Advice:“Don't be afraid to ask for the business. Don't be afraid. If you're talking to a social worker, you're talking to a discharge planner. It's great that they know you. It's great that they know you have a couple of kids. They know you're good people, you know a little bit about their personal life. But don't be afraid to say to them, “Hey look, you know me well enough, is there anyone on your floor or anyone on that roster that you think could benefit from some home care at home?” And you'll be surprised what that's going to do for your business.”Hot Marketing Tip/ Advice 2:“We even offer a discharge service where we'll pick you up from the hospital and we'll bring you home. We'll pick up your prescription. And we'll go do some groceries. We'll clean out your refrigerator and wash some clothes and that'll be a one time thing. And that will lead eventually to them saying, “Hey, I had a good first time experience with Home Instea

Chapter 1: After almost a year of unemployment figures recovering, we saw tens-of-thousands of job losses in the last month of 2020. January numbers will be released tomorrow morning, so which way are we expecting this to go? Guest: Brendon Bernard, Economist with Indeed.ca. Chapter 2: In what may be a landmark report in Canada, a company called Clearview AI was determined to have violated privacy laws protecting personal images. The technology was used by dozens of Canadian agencies, including the RCMP, and the entire thing has identified huge gaps in legislation. Guest: Ann Cavoukian, Executive Director of the Global Privacy & Security by Design Centre, and former 3 term Information and Privacy Commissioner for Ontario. Chapter 3: What would a long term care home look if it were built with all the lessons we learned during the pandemic? That’s what Baptist Housing is thinking about as they redesign the Inglewood Care Centre in West Vancouver. Guest: Marc Kinna, president and CEO of Baptist Housing. Chapter 4: One of the impacts this pandemic had was forcing some seniors to reconsider where they want to live. Long term care homes have suffered countless outbreaks, and the vast majority of deaths from COVID-19 have been in the senior population. That’s led to a boom in the home care industry, helping people stay home instead of moving to a facility. Guest: Jeremiah Cristall, head of the Home Instead Senior Care office servicing Richmond, Surrey North Delta and Queensborough. Chapter 5: How much should companies like Google and Facebook pay for the content they’re sharing? Social media giants suck up over 80 percent of digital advertising revenue, and a lot of their traffic is generated by news content they pull from Canadian companies. Guest: John Hinds, CEO of News Media Canada, a lobby group that represents media companies in Canada. Chapter 6: We’ve now learned that dozens of tickets have been issued for COVID-19 rule breaking in the past couple of weeks. Guest: Mike Farnworth, Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Chapter 7: You likely heard about this in the news a couple of days ago, but we want to take a couple of minutes here to talk about the legacy of Charan Gill. He was an icon in the community, known for his organizing of B-C farmers and his work to fight racism. Guest: Raj Chouhan, NDP MLA for Burnaby Edmonds, Speaker of the House. Clarke McBee is a Licensed Professional Counselor and the Director of Community Relations at Home Instead Senior Care. In this podcast episode, she shares why someone should consider hospice care, how people can best navigate anticipatory grief, and why certain strong emotions (like anger) come up during the grieving process. Key Takeaways: How did Clarke get into this field of work? What is the difference between working with people in anticipatory grief vs. post-death grief? Susan had a very tough time when she was in the anticipatory grief stage. Susan is grateful she had a hospice team because they made recommendations so that Paul could still be a part of their daughter’s life during her big milestones. Is grief different between people who know when a loved one is going to pass vs. if they had someone pass very suddenly? There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Susan’s daughter said that the father she knew, died a long time ago. This statement rang true, but it punched Susan right in the gut. Where does anger come from when you experience grief? What advice does Clarke have for someone who is in anticipatory grief?
Every day, all across America, families are struggling to cope. Many are raising children, working demanding jobs and trying to care for a senior family member. These Americans are often called the "Sandwich Generation", and they are growing in record numbers. That's because America is aging in record numbers. By the year 2020, the number of seniors will equal the number of 20 to 35 year olds. Advances in medicine and healthier lifestyles will help seniors work longer and continue to lead more productive lives. But the numbers also tell another story. More and more children need to help care for their parents. These family caregivers eventually run out of hours in the day, the stress becomes too great and the balance is broken. The Tampa Home Instead Senior Care family has a passionate desire to be your trusted source in helping your family keep your aging mother, father, grandparents or friends in their home as they grow older. It's that simple. This is all we do and because the home care services your loved one or friend needs must come from someone you trust locally, the Tampa Home Instead Senior Care office is passionate about exceeding the needs of the elderly in our community. We're not a giant corporation run from the top down - we're a locally owned community-based, friendly and responsive office right here in Tampa, FL. Whether we are assisting with Alzheimer's care, light housekeeping, meal preparation, safety watch, companionship, personal care or medication reminders, we are an affordable solution to our clients as they remain safe and happy. No matter where seniors live, in their home, in assisted living facilities or even nursing homes, Home Instead Senior Care is currently providing thousands of hours of senior home care services annually. Since 2003, we have been your trusted source for comprehensive companionship and home care services for seniors throughout the Tampa area. Services can be arranged for as little as 3 hours, or as many as 24 hours, up to 7 days per week (including holidays). This one-on-one service is performed by CAREGivers who are bonded and insured after undergoing a stringent background check. Our compassionate CAREGivers love working with seniors and very special attention is given to matching them with clients to achieve the utmost compatibility. https://www.homeinstead.com/135 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedoctorwhisperer/message
