Recovery, resilience, and injury resistance gets harder as we get older. The harder and longer you go, the harder and longer the recovery process can be. This week’s guest, legendary ultra runner Magda Boulet knows all about what it takes to stay resilient and recover well even after the longest, hardest challenges. Since turning 45, Magda’s won the Marathon des Sables, a six day 156 mile stage race, in Morocco; completed the 172-mile Tahoe Rim Trail in 50 hours and 40 minutes, and won the 2019 Leadville Trail 100 Run. Earlier this year, she completed an “Everesting” run, running up and down the same hill to reach the vertical gain of Mount Everest—more than 29,000 feet. Now at age 47, she’s doing all that and more while going through perimenopause, being a mom to a teenager, and working at GU Energy and Boon as the Vice President of Research and Development. Magda was very open about how she’s had to change her training and lifestyle to stay strong and resilient and recover well during this stage of life and her career. We are excited to share our "Best of 2019" with you guys today. Based on your feedback and our intuition we are showcasing six episodes from the past year. We are so grateful to be the conduit of wisdom and to share these guests with you. Here's to a bountiful New Year for all! Podcast 139: Talbot Cox of Talbot Cox Media Talbot Cox is in the slipstream of his creation and knows there is no other direction to move than forward. He has faced adversity and triumphed. He has seen how fast life-savings can dwindle and how quickly a financial situation can turn into debt. Following his passion full-gas has also caused a major disruption in the norm of sports media and with that, many people are not supporters of his mission but this has not stopped him. His intention is not to upset. His intention is not to hoard the knowledge that has afforded him exceptional success in a short period of time. Talbot is very clear on his intention and that is to grow a sport that he holds very close to his heart and create abundance for as many involved as possible along the way. Podcast 151: Tom Voss, The Meditating Vet In 2004, 20-year-old Tom Voss was deployed to Mosul, Iraq to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was a part of a scout sniper platoon which meant that many days it was Tom’s job to run towards gunfire as he gathered intel for military operations. He never expected to return home alive and early on in his deployment he surrendered his resistance to death. Tom endured relentless exposure to violence and sustained what he calls, moral injury. He was diagnosed and treated for PTSD with pharmaceutical drugs that quieted his symptoms but not his deep moral wounds. He knew he needed to begin processing the deep pain and grief that could not be medicated away. Podcast 159: Magda Boulet of GU Energy Magda is Vice President of Innovation, Research, and Development at GU and it all started many years ago when she knocked on the door and asked for help. At the time, Magda was a roadrunner looking to up her game and she knew that sports nutrition was an important piece for her to learn. That day she met the legendary Dr. Vaughan, who created the first energy gel to aid his daughter to reach her peak performance in ultrarunning. Never did Magda think that day, that she would also someday become an ultramarathoner and a GU executive. Podcast 160: Kristin Mayer of Betty Designs Kristin Mayer started her morning on a seemingly ordinary Monday utterly unaware that her life was about to change forever. At 1 pm that afternoon, Kristin’s husband confessed that he was no longer happy and no longer committed to sharing his life with her. In those moments, Kristin experienced everything that one could imagine when their life turns upside down. One day at a time and on many days, one moment at a time she rebuilt herself and discovered strength she didn’t realize she possessed. Today Kristin finds herself at the top of one of the most recognizable brands in the endurance sports world. Podcast 169 with Gerry Rodriguez of Tower 26 Gerry Rodrigues started swimming in the open water 50 years ago. He has over 100 open water titles and is one of the most experienced swim coaches of our time. He is the founder of Tower 26, a coaching empire that focuses on preparing triathletes to be race-ready. In this episode, he gives us the keys to the kingdom by sharing his well-informed experiential wisdom on swimming for the sport of triathlon. Podcast 171 with Philip and Renee Philip Urso and Renee Deslauriers are co-owners of Live, Love Teach – Yoga Teacher Training School and Rhode Island Power Yoga. They are co-creators of the Yoga-Based Stress Reduction (YBSR) educational program, and their goal is to identify a more evidence-based approach to yoga classes. Philip is in his 4th-semester of graduate-level classes at Harvard University. His work focuses on medical and psychological studies on anxiety, yoga, and mindfulness. Namaste - Jess

Following an in-depth production tour at GU Energy, BJ and I met with Magda Boulet to record this episode in her office. Magda is Vice President of Innovation, Research, and Development at GU and it all started many years ago when she knocked on the door and asked for help. Magda grew up in Poland and immigrated to the United States in 1991. She barely spoke English and started her career at Taco Bell in Southern California. She became a US Citizen on September 11, 2001. She attended Cal Berkeley and loved it so much that she never left. It is the town that she still calls home. She ran for Cal Berkeley where she met her husband and fellow runner Richie. A professional marathoner for many years, Magda trained under the guidance of Jack Daniels for over a decade. In 2008, she placed 2nd to Deena Kastor at the Olympic Trials in Boston and earned herself the honor of representing the United States at the Bejing Olympics. An experience that she describes as her biggest disappointment but also the experience that led to a rebirth of her career and her fastest times. Magda has generously shared her backstory on several podcasts and we've linked to a few of those below in the show notes so definitely check those out. For this episode, we wanted to tap into her knowledge bank and dive right into sports nutrition. We talk about the biggest mistake that she sees athletes make when it comes to nutrition and her perspective on low carb diets for athletes. We also talk about the importance of longevity in the sport, her relationship with Jack Daniels and her transition from road to trail. If you've heard Magda before or met her in person then you know that she is genuinely kind and holds a contagious passion for life. She is committed to pulling the best out of herself every day whether that is on the trail, at home or in the office. Although she dreams of sleeping in until 10 am and going on vacation to do nothing, she knows that an active, full life is the only choice for her. We are so grateful to have recorded this episode with her and excited to share it with the YT community. Namaste -Jess

Magda Boulet is the VP of Innovation at GU Energy Labs and runs for Hoka. She has many podiums and race wins to her name, including the prestigious Western States 100, and she’s also a US Olympian in the marathon. In today’s episode we talked about how Magda got her job at GU nearly 20 years ago, and how things have changed since then. We also talked about GU’s partnership with InsideTracker, and how Magda and her team have used a science based approach when it comes to product innovation. Magda clearly loves the running community, and what got her out the door the first time was simple: to make friends. Magda shared some tips on how to manage a busy career alongside her training and family life, as well as what gets her excited when it comes to training, travel, and racing. What Magda seems to have the most pride in talking about is how she is able to inspire other runners as well as her son Owen to see that anything truly is possible, and that dreams are certainly worth chasing, no matter how big they are.  --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/forthelongrun/support

How do you engage in the perception of what you believe is possible?  Magda Boulet continually raises the bar.  Born and raised in Communist Poland, she moved to German and later to the United States as a teenager.  With a love for swimming, she wanted to be more social and found running high school. Eventually, she had the dream of one day going for the Olympics for the United States.  After one failed attempt at Olympic Trials in 2004, she continued pushing for her dream.  In 2008, Magda finished 2nd in the Olympic Marathon Trials and was awarded a spot on the USA Team and headed to Beijing.  The unthinkable happened - a freak accident, causing an injury that resulted in Magda having to drop out partway through the Olympic Marathon Event.  Completely devastated, Magda went home and sought solace in nature with her family and had a decision to make: let this catastrophic event define her and give up, or figure out how to overcome it.  And overcome it she did.  Magda tells us about how she became an even faster runner post-Beijing and even found Ultra-Running.  In 2015, she won her debut at the Western States 100 and was named Ultra-Runner of the year.  Since then, she's placed top 5 at the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc and taken on more extreme events.  She is just completing the Marathon des Sable - arguably the hardest running stage race in the world. I love this episode because Magda relays all of the valuable lessons she has experienced through her dedication to the sport, dealing with major setbacks, her love for challenges, how to view competition and how to get the best out of yourself.  As the VP of Innovation and R&D for GU Energy, we also talk about sports nutrition, the illusion of balance, and how she manages being a professional ultra endurance runner, a mom to her 12 year old son, and a full time career at GU.  I hope you enjoy this exchange with Magda.  The conversation left me feeling inspired and excited and I hope you feel the same way!  Listen Now   Topics Discussed in the Podcast  Growing up in Communist Poland Chasing an unconventional dream her rise to Olympic Trials and getting a spot 2008 Beijing Olympics & her DNF How to deal with failure and challenge Her transition to ultra-running and winning Western States 100 Working for GU Energy as VP of Innovation and R&D Importance sports nutrition in the training plan The illusion of balance & key elements for feeling good Her preparation for Marathon Des Sables Links Magda Boulet on Instagram Magda Boulet on Twitter Magda's website Friend of the Podcast: Küat Racks Join! Plant-Powered Tribe Facebook Group Shop My Store – Moxy & Grit Support the Show If you would like to support the growth my show, I'd love your contribution on.  Patreon.  The current production of this free show is primarily supported out of my own pocket and a small portion is covered through the donations on Patreon. To help you shatter your perception of what's possible, discover the training necessary to run 100 miles, and inspire you to chase your next stretch goal, I've invited Magdalena Boulet onto the podcast to talk about her performance at this year's Western States Endurance Run. One of the biggest names in the world of ultramarathons, Magda Boulet has an impressive list of credentials: 1st - 2002 and 2003 Pittsburgh Marathon 1st - 2002 San Francisco Marathon 1st - 2006 Orange County Marathon 2nd - 2008 Olympic Trials Marathon 1st - 2015 Western States Endurance Run 5th - 2016 Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc 2nd - 2017 Western States Endurance Run She prepares methodically for challenging races, leaving no stone unturned as she strives to compete with the fastest endurance runners on the planet. Using a blood analytics service called Inside Tracker, she identified biomarkers outside of her optimal zones - and then went to work fixing them through diet and lifestyle changes. Magda Boulet has not only been successful in the ultra marathon world, recently finishing 2nd in the brutal 2017 Western States 100 mile, but she is a former Olympian in the marathon. Magda shares her story about her natural progression throughout the distances during her running career, and how she reached the Olympic trials in 2008 ready to have the best race of her life (which she did) to finish 2nd in the trials. Magda is very real with us about the frustration and struggles she went through at the Olympics and why going into it injured removed a lot of the joy and appreciation for her (and what she would do differently now). We talk about her transition to ultra races and how she became so successful from the start. She gives us some very interesting (but helpful) advice about why we should be hiking up hills in longer races, even if we feel like we can run up it, and how that helped her in Western States 100 mile 2015 where she won the race, and 2017 where she finished 2nd. This podcast episode is for you if you love to learn how to listen to your body, and you enjoy getting inspiration from other runners about how to be your best. Magda is so experienced, and is happy to share her advice with us. Today's Guest Magda Boulet A 2008 Olympian in the marathon, and now one of the most successful ultra marathoners, who at 43 years old is continuing to impress. Winning her debut 100 mile race at Western States and second in the brutal 2017 Western States. What You Will Learn About How Magda first got into running and what made her fall in love with it The heartbreak of finishing 4th in the Olympic Trials in 2004, followed by taking time off to have her son before she bounced back to finish 2nd in the 2008 Olympic Trials The advice Jack Daniel's (her coach) gave her before she raced the Olympic Trials Why her Olympic experience was not as good as it should have been or she hoped it would be Why she ran a 1 mile race and 50mile race one after the other How to be successful in ultramarathons  Inspirational Quotes I was running with brand new inspiration after my son was born, a completely different level of motivation. It was an incredible race for me, a day we all dream about having as competitors, everything just lined up. Go and run the race you know you are in shape for. I feel to this day that there was so much pressure I put on myself to perform a certain way, when you put so much time in, you want to represent your country to your best ability. Having that injury (happened a week before the race) was extremely frustrating. You feel that sense of guilt, that there are only three women representing the country, and you have a bum knee.  I know now that there are things you can control and things you can't control.  It is unfortunate that we get hurt, and sometimes the worst time to get hurt is when you are trying to represent your country, or trying to run the most important race of your life. Dropping out of a race is extremely difficult to deal with. It is never easy to repair that damage that has happened. I was ready for a new challenge, ready for a different direction and motivation. Most athletes that competed around the same time as me, once they completed that, they leave the sport, once they know this is the last olympic trials. I wasn't ready to walk away from competing, I was just ready to walk away from road marathons. One of my favorite workouts for marathons, was always the long run. I knew deep inside that there was something about this long stuff I was going to enjoy. In ultras there is so much more room for mistakes. The shorter the race, the more risks you can take. In a 100mile race, once you burn it, it is difficult to repair it. (on ultra races) In early miles, it is really important to listen to your body...some of the low moments you have where your body is not floating on cloud 9, you aren't feeling great, you have to respect the moments you don't feel 100%. You have to listen to the signs and cues your body is giving you. It is so worth backing off when your body is telling you. If you have more in the tank, it will be there at the end. If you push through some of the signs early in the race, it is going to be very difficult to have a strong finish. That is part of western states, the beauty of the challenge, that it is always unpredictable and there are elements that can change...it's not disrespecting it, but more believing that you can do it, that you can beat that. I have learned over the years to make sure that I listen to my body...I think I have an easier time listening to my body, and that comes with having the confidence to back off, having the confidence to let go of your pack, or telling your pacer to push me enough, but give me feedback. Part of what attracts us to this sport is that it is so challenging, and that you have to fight all these different elements. I look forward to racing, it is a celebration of weeks and months of workload and no matter what happens, I always try to have a good time.
