Ever wondered why the gut is referred to as your second brain? Let's talk about it. This week, I'm joined by Dr. Navaz Habib, the bestselling author of Activate Your Vagus Nerve, and the newly released Upgrade Your Vagus Nerve. We sat down to discuss the importance of the vagus nerve—the only cranial nerve that connects to every organ within your body—the role it plays in your gut, brain, and immune health, the significance of heart rate variability, and why you should be more intentional with your breathing.  In this episode, you'll discover: What the Vagus Nerve Does: Learn more about how the vagus nerve relays status information about your organ functions to the brain.  The Four Areas of Stressors: Working in harmony with the immune system, the vagus nerve can influence inflammation. Triggers include daily, psychological, physical, and biochemical stressors, says Dr. Habib. How Heart Rate Variability Informs the Vagus Nerve Function: Dr. Habib shares that when your HRV is in a good zone (this varies by individual), your body is better able to send signals to the brain through the vagus nerve.  Why Breathing Properly Is Key: Improve your sympathetic-parasympathetic balance—resulting in an increased HRV—by breathing through your nose, not your mouth. 01:59 Dr. Habib's Journey to Functional Medicine 08:17 Understanding the Vagus Nerve 18:46 The Role of the Vagus Nerve in Inflammation 34:04 Understanding HRV and Its Importance 34:39 Accuracy of Different HRV Measurement Devices 36:34 Using HRV Data for Trends, Not Diagnostics 37:07 Personal Experiences and HRV Improvement 40:15 Breathing Techniques to Improve HRV 42:35 The Role of the Diaphragm in Effective Breathing 46:47 Testing and Improving Your BOLT Score 50:27 Altitude Training and HRV 54:38 Vagus Nerve Dysfunction and Long COVID 57:21 Vagus Nerve Stimulation Devices Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Connect with Dr. Habib: Website: https://drnavazhabib.kartra.com/page/HUhome Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drnavazhabib/ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/DrNavazHabib Podcast: The Health Upgrade podcast Book: Upgrade Your Vagus Nerve Book: Activate Your Vagus Nerve The Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeown Truvaga Vagus Nerve Stimulator.

More altitude can mean more power... eventually. Training at altitude - or even just sleeping at altitude - can increase your red blood cell production, which means more oxygen to your muscles and therefore more power output. There are other benefits, and many caveats. And we get into those. But what about riders who don't live at or near altitude - and who have a high altitude race like Leadville 100 or SBT GRVL coming up? Well, we'll get into that, too. On today's podcast Coach Frank is joined by Coach Elliott, who falls into that "I live near sea level and I'm doing Leadville in a few weeks" camp. Elliott explains what he's been doing to prepare, and how he is coaching his athletes for Leadville and SBT GRVL. You might not be able to do nine week at altitude like Tour de France stage winner Victor Campenaerts, but there are things you can do! -- Try FasCat for Free for the 1st Month ➡️ https://tinyurl.com/47rr7em4 - no credit card is required!

Howdy friends. Welcome back to episode 18 of The Matchbox podcast presented by Ignition Coach Co. I'm your host Adam Saban and I've got a bit of an update to provide for y'all this week. I'm sad to announce that my co-host, Andrew Giniat, is no longer with us. No, not like that, he's just decided to part ways with Ignition Coach Co in lieu of another career opportunity presented to him. SO, until we can find a steady replacement, it'll just be Dylan, Drew, and myself on the show. So this week we're covering the topic of altitude training and acclimation protocols. With some big races at even bigger elevations, we figured this was a timely topic. If you're racing MTB Nationals, Telluride 100, Leadville, SBT, etc, stay tuned to hear our takes on the different approaches you can take to prep for events like these. As always, if you like what you hear share this with your friends and leave us a 5 star review. If you want us to cover a training-related topic in a future episode you can drop an email to info@ignitioncoachco.com with title The Matchbox Podcast or send us a DM through the Ignition instagram page. Find us online at Microcosm Coaching.https://www.microcosm-coaching.com/ Coach TJ and Coach Zoe discuss their recent experiences with racing and training at altitude. They touch on topics such as the use of salt pills for electrolyte replenishment, the pros and cons of giving blood while training, the effectiveness of multivitamins, and the challenges of racing at altitude. They also debrief Coach Zoë's recent race, the Silver Rush 50, and discuss the importance of setting outcome and process goals, staying true to your values and standards during tough races, and learning from difficult experiences. The conversation provides valuable insights for athletes training and competing at altitude. In this part of the conversation, the hosts discuss altitude training and its impact on performance in races at high elevations. They debunk common misconceptions about altitude training and emphasize the importance of focusing on overall fitness rather than relying solely on altitude interventions. They also discuss the effects of altitude on hydration and nutrition needs, as well as the benefits of trialing these strategies at elevation. The hosts provide recommendations for pre-race strategies, including getting an iron panel done and considering arriving early to the race location. Takeaways: Salt pills can be a convenient way to replenish electrolytes during training and racing. Giving blood while training should be done cautiously and not during important race build-ups or training blocks. Multivitamins may not be necessary for everyone and it's better to target specific micronutrient deficiencies with the help of a nutritionist or healthcare provider. Racing at altitude can be challenging for everyone, but it's important to be kind to yourself and adjust expectations accordingly. Setting outcome and process goals, staying true to your values and standards, and learning from difficult races are key to growth and progress as an athlete. Focus on overall fitness rather than relying solely on altitude interventions Trialing hydration and nutrition strategies at altitude is important Consider arriving early to the race location to acclimate Get an iron panel done to ensure optimal performance at altitude

In this episode of the Rox Lyfe podcast I'm chatting with James Barber and Rebecca Brett from the Altitude Centre – who, at their facilities in London, help sportspeople obtain the benefits of training at altitude, without needing to go up a mountain to get them. In this chat we talk about the benefits of altitude training, how to obtain those if you can't train at altitude or at their centre in London, the ways in which you can benefit for HYROX from this type of training, and how it can help when recovering from injury. But it's not all about altitude - we also get into VO2 max and threshold testing, heat acclimation and lots more. It's a very interesting, insightful chat that you'll hopefully take a lot away from. James is the Lead Performance Specialist at The Altitude Centre. He has a Masters in Sport Science, and is a 15 min 5k runner. And Rebecca is a Loughborough University Sport Science student. Her sporting background is in Olympic Weightlifting but she was roped into her first HYROX in april last year and is now, like many of us, a self confessed HYROX addict. Towards the end of this chat we talk briefly about an altitude training camp they are putting on, from March 2024 in the lead up to HYROX London at Olympia, which will be a 6 week camp where you can get full access to their facilities, plus VO2 max testing, at a vastly reduced rate. If that's something you might be interested in you can head to www.roxlyfe.com/altitude and it will redirect you to their website where you'll get all the info you need.
