This conversation with legendary musician Tracey Thorn from one of The Shift's very early seasons is one of my very favourites. Back then covid was still a thing and these chats on zoom with incredible women were my life rafts. Anyway, we're revisiting Tracey because by the time you listen to this episode, Everything But The Girl will have very tentatively put their toe back on the stage at a couple of very small gigs in London. I'm not getting my hopes up too much (as I know Tracey doesn't loooove live performing, however, Tracey if you happen to read this, I know there are thousands and thousands of fans hungry for a tour...) Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 – c. April 5, 1994) was an American singer, songwriter, artist and musician. He was the frontman of the rock band Nirvana, serving as the band's guitarist, lead vocalist, and primary songwriter. Through his angst-fueled songwriting and anti-establishment persona, Cobain's compositions widened the thematic conventions of mainstream rock music. He was often heralded as a spokesman of Generation X and is considered to be one of the most influential musicians in the history of alternative rock. This episode is based on Kurt's handwritten list of Top 50 albums, as featured in the 2002 anthology Journals. This week, I welcome Ben Watt to the podcast.Ben is, of course, best known as one half of Everything But The Girl, the duo he and Tracy Thorn formed in 1982 after meeting at Hull University. They released 10 albums, amassing millions of sales around the world.Prior to that career, however, both Ben and Tracy had already released music - Tracy as part of Marine Girls, and Ben with Robert Wyatt and then as a solo artist. That solo music is what we focus on here - particularly North Marine Drive, his debut, released on Cherry Red records in 1983, and its follow up, Hendra, released 31 years later, and featuring the former Suede guitarist and record producer Bernard Butler.Ben and Bernard worked together again for Ben's third album, 2016's Fever Dream. In the interview, we discuss all of that, as well as Ben's new album, Storm Damage, which was released at the end of January, his love of John Martyn, performing live, working with David Gilmour and, of course, his numerous guitars.Ben is on tour in the UK from February 27, beginning in Leeds, and tours the US at the end of March. The Marine Girls special with Gina Hartman in conversation  Marine Girls were a post-punk group from Hatfield, Hertfordshire. The group was formed in 1980, by two sixth form school friends: Tracey Thornand Gina Hartman. Originally, Thorn just played guitar and Hartman was the lead vocalist and percussionist. Thorn overcame her shyness and started singing too by the time they started making records. They were later joined by Jane Fox on bass and her younger sister, Alice, on joint vocals and percussion.

Marine Girls were a post punk group from Hatfield. The group was formed in 1980, by two sixth form school friends: Tracey Thorn Gina Hartman. Across four decades Tracey Thorn's songs and writing have offered up a clear-eyed woman’s view of the immediate world around her; from the acerbic teen love songs of her first early-eighties band Marine Girls, through sixteen years as one half of articulate multi-million-selling duo Everything But The Girl to her recent acclaimed memoirs and journalism.This year she released her first solo album of entirely original material for seven years, titled "Record". Tracey has described the album as "nine feminist bangers" and it includes collaborations with the likes of Warpaint, Shura and Corinne Bailey Rae.
