Great to Chat to Mark Saggers for the latest episode of our pod. Mark got in touch via e mail and wrote:My name is Mark Saggers and I am 59 years young. I move into the 60-64 Age Cat in 2024. I live in Newcastle Under Lyme, Staffordshire, having settled here in 2017 after leaving the RAF following 34 years service. I now work for Leidos UK Defence  division basically as an MOD logistics contractor - it's busy!I started multisport in 2002 after becoming frustrated during a military training course that involved running and swimming. I'd be the fastest runner but slowest swimmer virtually drowning actuallyI've race for RAF Triathlon for many years but now represent Newcastle Staffs Tri Club (NTC). I've had some UK age group success, with some national podiums and a win at the 2011 National Middle Distance Tri champs at Emberton Park (yes, I know Jon Cowell!). I've had some RAF representation also. Dabbled at Ironman distance, winning my age group at the 2014 Outlaws event. Races in Almere at the 2008 World Long Dist Championships and survived an aweful 4K swim to do well on the bike/run. Went through some turmoil after leaving the RAF and that impacted my multisport ambitions - but I kept going. Now focusing on Duathlon as I lost my swim mojo during COVID. Had a rejuvenated 2023 by getting in some balances training and qualified for the European Sprint Duathlon Champs at Darley Moor. Ran a 37:31 10k, 18:09 5k and a 57:46 25 mile bike TT. Now want to minimise the decline in performance as I age! That's why I started the YouTube channel described below. Started a YouTube Duathlon channel recently to document my training as I target the British standard distance duathlon champs on 24 Marc 24. It's called Just Du It!  Link: https://youtube.com/@sagsdothedu?si=JeWLMIBRHS9Jy5r3Find us on Instagram @amp_1967X : agegroupmultisportpodcastFacebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comif you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.

Well Lads and Lasses… what started out life as a mere Sunderland AFC v Cambridge Utd preview became something else entirely, as our Chris Wynn was joined for a couple of hours on Thursday night by a legend of broadcasting - Mark Saggers - to go over not only his love for Cambridge Utd, but his surprising family ties to Sunderland AFC - as well as his 40 years in the business of sports broadcasting and journalism… It's an epic! What's the crack? Where do we begin? Saggers let's us in on his family history and his links to Sunderland as a club and a city, including his first visit to Roker Park in the 1960's! Chris gets his deep-dive fix as Mark details his amazing journey through the ever changing world of broadcasting… from Muhammad Ali to Jimmy Carter, from Terry Wogan to Stan Collymore, from covering the Olympic games to the World Cup (and the occasional horse race) Saggers has seen a lot. What moments stand out so far in his long career? His love of sport in general - particularly football and cricket - and his experiences at Cambridge Utd with the likes of Chris Turner, Gary Johnson, John Beck and many more... as well as watching a certain Lee Johnson grow up; The lessons he learned from legends of broadcasting at the BBC, and many stories from a time when journalists were a very real conduit between fans and their clubs; The birth of Sky and Sky Sports - Saggers tells us of the years of rogue broadcasting, the occasional almost accidental interview and the pursuit of the story - as Sky and Rupert Murdoch changed the face of sports and news broadcasting in the UK and across the world; His time at Talksport and the insanity of the era, as the lads just took what they could get and ran with it - often with hilarious results; His relationship with former England Manager Terry Venables; having to take Tel to the Ritz in the build up to Euro 96 and securing the exclusive interview ahead of his then rivals at the BBC and ITV. Saggers talks about gambling harm and recovery, and his work with Betknowmore UK on a series of Podcasts highlighting his struggles and the struggles of others; If you're rushing for time ahead of the match and want to jump into the preview ahead of the match between Sunderland and Cambridge - jump ahead to around 1:23:00 - listen to a few insights on how the U's are doing this season under Mark Bonner, and when you get the chance… come back and listen to the rest of the tale! Chris and Mark wax lyrical about League One and the rest of the English game. Where is elite football headed? Does Saggers approve of the direction it's taken and may take in the future? Will the almost universally despised 'Super League' rear it's head again in some form or another? Mark tells us about his new venture on Talk TV as he launches a brand new show - The Sunday Night Club - which starts May 1st; what issues in sport does he aim to highlight as he moves forward to another chapter in his career? Eight days to save Sunderland's season - does Saggers think we can do it?All this and so much more. A pretty wild ride through many different eras from a man who may well have seen it all… Enjoy! #SAFC #EFL #CamUTD #Saggers #TalkSport See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode 22 "Football, a family tradition." Nigel Adderley has commentated for BBC, Talksport, BT Sport, as well as numerous others. In May 2019, Nigel commentated on his beloved Tranmere Rovers, as they faced Newport County in the league two playoff final.  12 months previous, Nigel had decided not to attend Tranmere's national league playoff final with Boreham Wood, following a painful defeat at Wembley 12 months previous against Forest Green Rovers. Five months before the playoff final, Nigel's father had passed away, and on the advice of his mother, Nigel took an offer to voice the Newport Tranmere playoff final for Talksport. After a nervy 119 minutes of action, Nigel belted out the words "Jennings with the header. . .Jennings has done it." After the match, Mark Saggers praised Nigel for being so composed and unbiased whilst commentating on his own team, and that his father would be proud of him. At that moment, Nigel broke down in tears. The emotions of the previous six months, coupled with the ecstasy of the late winner, all came out at once.  We talk to Nigel about his career as a commentator, the ups and the downs, his love of football, and its inextricable link to family.
