In this episode, we are joined by Jen, a holistic health practitioner and mental health therapist who shares her incredible journey of healing from chronic illness and achieving holistic wellness. Jen discusses her own struggles with allergies, anxiety, and self-worth from an early age and how they eventually led her to explore alternative approaches to health and healing.Main Discussion Points:The Journey Begins: Jen describes her childhood experiences with allergies, anxiety, and self-criticism, which persisted into adulthood. Despite pursuing conventional mental health therapy and medications, she felt like something was still missing. The Turning Point: At the age of 25, Jen experienced a series of infections that resulted in a significant decline in her health. Her immune system was compromised, and she developed severe allergies and panic attacks. Her search for answers eventually led her to a diagnosis of Mast Cell Activation Disorder, a rare condition at the time.Holistic Approach: Jen's journey toward healing involved adopting a holistic approach to wellness. She realized that her body was responding appropriately to the stressors and toxins it encountered, and she needed to support her body's natural healing mechanisms.Foundational Healing: Jen focused on foundational aspects of her health, starting with dietary changes and nervous system regulation. She emphasized the importance of pacing and listening to her body during the healing process.Mind-Body Connection: Jen highlights the strong connection between mental health and physical health. She emphasizes the significance of addressing both aspects simultaneously for comprehensive healing.Transformation Over Symptom Relief: Instead of fixating on eliminating symptoms, Jen shifted her focus towards personal transformation and healing. She learned to surrender to the healing process and trust her body's innate wisdom.Removing Obstacles: Jen explains how healing often involves removing obstacles, such as poor diet, trauma, and toxins, to allow the body to heal naturally. This foundational approach can lead to significant improvements in health.Trauma Release: Jen discusses the importance of releasing stored trauma and emotions in the body. She shares her experience with tension and trauma releasing exercises (TRE) as a powerful tool for nervous system regulation and emotional healing.Overcoming Fear: Jen believes that fear underlies many chronic illnesses, whether experienced psychologically or physiologically due to toxicity and infections. Overcoming fear and stress is a crucial aspect of healing.Jen's inspiring journey from chronic illness to holistic wellness serves as a powerful reminder of the body's innate capacity to heal when given the right support and environment. By addressing both physical and mental aspects of health, individuals can embark on a transformative healing journey and experience vitality and joy in their lives. Episode 83: Neurostabilization with Amber Walker. Link in Profile and below, or Scan QR code on picture. The worlds of Mast Cell Activation Disorder, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, and Hypermobility Ehlers Danlos Syndrome have many threads in common and many shared experiences. The common thread in these conditions expands to the fact that the symptoms, causes, and triggers are unpredictable, undefined, and this experience is largely disruptive to the nervous system. Further the nervous system disruption makes the symptoms worsen. How serious should we take neurostabilization in these conditions? To help answer this question, I welcomed on Amber Walker, PT, DPT, CFMP, CNPT. Her unique personal and clinical journey provides a most comprehensive look at this area: We cover many things such as: Where to start when complex health conditions present. How the immune system and environmental triggers effect the Vagus nerve and limbic system Polyvagal theory Nervous system balancing Mast Cells and much more This episode is dedicated to Projectmercy.org an organization committed to education, healthcare, food security, adult skills and infrastructure in Ethiopia. A well-balanced diet is essential to our health, but with conditions such as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Joint hypermobility syndrome, the topic of diet can be fraught with pitfalls and disappointment. What works for one may not necessarily work for others, and with co-morbidities such as Mast Cell Activation Disorder, slow gut mobility, and a whole host of other issues, finding a hypermobility diet that agrees with you as an individual can be somewhat daunting. "Life is about all about perspective. We can choose to let our biggest challenges destroy us or we can use them as fuel in the pursuit of a higher purpose" ~ Bonni HowardThis heart warming episode is inspiring and motivating for anyone who may have been told they wouldn't never be able to do the impossible.Bonni Howard's journey through a lifetime of debilitating health issues, trauma, and addiction didn't always make sense to her. Bonni lived with undiagnosed chronic illness from the time she was a child. Her symptoms were dismissed as hypochondria and anxiety for decades until in her 40s, when she became disabled and was diagnosed with Dysautonomia, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and Mast Cell Activation Disorder. Her ailing health necessitated a variety of surgical and medical interventions including pacemaker placement, cervical spine surgery, and a full hip replacement. Although Bonni partook in plenty of traditional schooling, including a master's level education, her most impactful learning has come from falling down and getting back up again. "When we experience a pain so deep that we are brought to our knees, this is where we grow the most", says Bonni. In the search for wellness and meaning in all that she'd been through, Bonni tirelessly looked for answers. A series of synchronicities led her to lesser known healing modalities, where she not only found wellness and inner peace, but also her life's purpose - to help others heal. Today, Bonni whole-heartedly believes that every part of her journey was a gift because it has allowed her deeply understand and compassionately guide others through their healing journeys. Bonni recognizes that each experience, no matter how challenging, has set the stage for the impassioned, fully aligned life she leads today. As a podcast host, health coach, speaker, and well being software consultant, she is determined to use her life experience to help others find healing and happiness. Bonni believes that “when we live in alignment with our highest purpose and values, our health improves exponentially". Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Olga: Chronic hayfever and long standing exposure to pesticides, DDT, welding fumes etc. what is the connection and how to normalise the immune system response? Would detox be appropriate? Thanks! Olga Daniel: First off, thank you for your service. You have made huge and positive impact in many lives and I continue to additionally spread your name and messages around. You give us all hope, which we do not get in the medical community. I am a 44 year old white male. I have been struggling with daily migraines the last 10 years (pain scale 7-10). Anything I tried as a preventative only made things worse, besides Propanolol. I take 120mg once per day. BP 115/77. Any and all things triggered or caused the migraine to increase in intensity. As you did, I performed a lot of research on my own and learned ways to manage and heal myself based on food/product eliminations. I worked the last two years with a local ND, but your history and experience brings it to a whole other level of knowledge. My testosterone levels were always under 300, so I thought I would try TRT therapy. Out of all things, that just about eliminated my migraines and allowed me to have the ability to take supplements without triggering a migraine. Gradually, I will work to get off TRT, which I have only been on for 18 weeks (1 injection every 3 weeks - 300mg of Testosterone Cypionate). I switched to your practice (under J. Hayes), I now know how deficient I was in vitamins, minerals, and how my body wasn't absorbing much of anything. She put me on a good path. My question to you is, two years ago I went for an abdominal ultrasound due to stomach pain (ended up being gastritis) and 2 - 1x1cm 'hepatic' cysts on my liver were found and a 1- 3mm polyp in my gallbladder (no issues with gallbladder). I usually go for scans every 6 months. Last one (before starting your regimen) on 9/16/2019 now shows they are 2cm on my liver and a 3rd found (left, caudate lobe, right lobe), and polyp (gallbladder) is now 4mm, and now also 1cm cyst was found on my left kidney. If you wouldn't mind explaining how these cysts form, steps to take, etc. Both, Serrapeptase and Nattokinase trigger a migraine for me within an hour. I know both can work miracles, if I could only handle it. MD do not seem concerned, but then again, they do not care much about our health (in my opinion). It will be interesting to see how things go on my next scan, now that fulfilling these deficiencies. For your Notes: (Julia/You have me on the following)Nutritional Supplements:Daily nutritional support shake: Start with ¼ scoop and increase as able with a goal of 2 scoops daily (on-going)GI balance:take 1 with each meal for 2 weeks and try to increase to 2 if able (complete 2 bottles)Daily digestive: 1 with each whole food meal (on- going)Liquid Vitamin D: 6 drops at breakfast (on-going)Omega 3 support: 1 with lunch1 with dinner (on-going)Full Spectrum Magnesium: 1 with lunch 2 with dinner (use for at least 3 months then reassess)Adrenal Soothe: 1-2 with lunch 1-2 with dinner (use for at least 3 months then reassess)Alkalizing Vitamin C: Start with ¼ of a scoop in the morning with the goal of a full scoop (for 3 months then reassess)Zinc Piccolinate: 1 at dinner (use for at least 3 months then reassess)*Iron Response Complete: 1-2 30 min before breakfast pending iron blood test. You are a true blessing to all of us! Daniel Patty: Dr. Cabral, I am a huge fan of your podcast. With all the podcasts I've listened to, I've never heard you talk about Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. I'm wondering if you have treated anyone with this condition and if so, what you used and how much? My daughter has this condition, along with POTS, Mast Cell Activation Disorder and Celiac Disease. She tries to eat pretty clean and has been gluten-free for a year now. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on this! Katie: Hi Dr. Cabral! I'm wondering what the reasons for seeing mucus in your stool might be. For years I've dealt with it on and off - I always just chalked it up to allergies and/or IBS. I've done all the gut testing and have done the CBO protocol, heal & seal, mold protocol, and am now on an abridged CBO that my integrative health practitioner put me on - all that to say, I'm doing the gut work! But I do still occasionally see those mucus-y stools. Any insight on why that might be, and what causes them? Tara: I am a 56 yr old female no major health issues all my life and just now diagnosed with cataracts I’ve never been dependent on eye glasses a have some that I would were for seeing at the movies, theater or driving unfamiliar places at night and just started wearing readers a couple years ago however since the cataracts I really don’t need readers I’ve read that cold pressed haxane free castor can help /reverse cataracts but I’m hesitant to try ( I don’t want to cause more damage ) I’m currently on day 6 of detox I’m searching for a solution other than IOL /surgery I’d like to know if trying castor oil drops is ok or any other recommendations James: Hi Doc, I once heard somebody talk about how unhealthy fats like the various vegetable oils, canola oils etc. were the WORST thing for your body as you can't utilise them at all. Before this i was always under the impression that sugar was the WORST thing for your body, but apparently we can at least use utilise that. I guess this is a bit of a subjective question as it depends on your specific health deficiencies and imbalances when determining what is the WORST food/product for you. But if you was to say on a whole what the worse thing is, or the worst 3 things are, for the MAJORITY of humans - what would they be? IF you cant answer this question because it's too "person-specific" then can you answer me this question - Added sugar vs. Unhealthy oils - what is worse for you and why? Even if you do answer the first, could you also answer the second, I'm quite interested in the Sugar vs. Oils debate. This article can be found online here at Muslimmatters.orgArticle read by the author, Zeba Khan.Zeba Khan is the Director of Development for MuslimMatters.org, as well as a writer, speaker, and disability awareness advocate. In addition to having a child with autism, she herself lives with Ehlers-Danlos Sydrome, Dysautonomia, Mast-Cell Activation Disorder, and a random assortment of acronyms that collectively translate to chronic illness and progressive disability.
In this episode we discuss Mast cell activation disorder (MCAD) with Tara Notrica from New York. MCAD is an immunological condition in which mast cells inappropriately and excessively release chemical mediators, resulting in a range of chronic symptoms, sometimes including anaphylaxis or near-anaphylaxis attacks.
When Lesly Rae started reacting to everything she ate or smelled and spent more of her week in the ER than not, she saw the reality that many Mast Cell Activation Syndrome clients face. It wasn't until she noticed her issues stabilizing from using the elderberry syrup she made each year that she began digging deeper into "healing" vs treating her condition. Today, Lesly has stabilized her condition from "being allergic to everything" to being able to eat whatever she wants and helps others with Mast Cell do the same. This interview sheds important light on a syndrome that is growing but not well understood.
