214: In this episode, I'm diving into all things histamine—what it is, how it functions, and why it might be the missing link in your hormone and immune health journey. After sharing insights on the connection between histamine sensitivity and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the response was massive. I'm unpacking why histamine issues are more than just food reactions, how they relate to estrogen, menopause, and chronic inflammation, and why there's no one-size-fits-all solution. I've dealt with histamine challenges my whole life and supported countless patients through it. This episode is a deep, honest look at the bigger picture behind histamine imbalance. Topics Discussed: What are the symptoms of histamine intolerance and how is it connected to hormone imbalances? How does histamine affect estrogen levels and hormone replacement therapy (HRT)? What causes high histamine levels and how can you support balance naturally? What is the difference between histamine intolerance and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS)? How do lifestyle factors, diet, and gut health influence histamine sensitivity? Sponsored By: Nutrisense | Head over to nutrisense.io/drtyna to get 30% off your Nutrisense plan. If you're navigating midlife and feeling like your body has started working against you—despite clean eating and consistent workouts—this episode is your wake-up call. Angela is joined by functional nutritionist Louise Digby to explore the lesser-known culprits behind stubborn weight, fatigue, and hormonal havoc in perimenopause. Forget willpower. This conversation reframes weight loss resistance through the lens of gut health, toxic load, and nutrient insufficiencies. From brittle nails and dry skin to unexpected acne flare-ups, Louise uncovers the hidden metabolic and hormonal messages your body is sending—and how to respond with science, not shame. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gut Health Trumps Willpower: Many women have gut imbalances without symptoms—but these silent issues can stall fat loss and disrupt hormones. Toxic Load Sabotages Hormones: Environmental toxins from skincare, pollutants, and food can overwhelm your liver and impair hormone detox pathways. Nutrient Insufficiencies Are Common: Even with a healthy diet, modern stress and poor soil deplete key nutrients like magnesium, B vitamins, and vitamin D. Metabolic Clues You’re Missing: Cold hands, brittle nails, poor recovery, and stubborn weight can all signal compromised metabolic health—not laziness. Histamine Intolerance in Perimenopause: Symptoms like rosacea, joint pain, and sinus issues may be worsened by declining histamine tolerance and poor gut health. One Size Doesn’t Fit All: Every woman’s root cause is different—testing and personalised nutrition are key to reclaiming energy and vitality. TIMESTAMPS AND KEY TOPICS 0:00 – Introduction 1:05 – Silent gut issues and how they sabotage fat loss 2:21 – Toxic load: from skincare to hormonal disruption 3:52 – Why good diets still result in nutrient insufficiencies 5:03 – Clues your metabolism is slowing down 6:48 – Top nutrient gaps: B vitamins, magnesium, vitamin D 9:36 – The hair loss and iron connection in perimenopause 12:14 – Why adult acne and rosacea emerge in perimenopause 13:09 – Histamine intolerance, joint pain, and the gut-skin link VALUABLE RESOURCES Get a free snapshot of your health and personalised report at www.yourtotalhealthcheck.com Join The High Performance Health Community A BIG thank you to our sponsors who make the show possible: Sign up to my Fresh Start Newsletter: Start your week feeling in control with one simple, science-backed step for your hormones, health and longevity—get your free weekly fresh start at angelafoster.me/freshstart ABOUT THE HOST Angela Foster is an award winning Nutritionist, Health & Performance Coach, Speaker and Host of the High Performance Health podcast. Doctor's Farmacy with Mark Hyman, MD Key Takeaways Histamine intolerance and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) can be the hidden drivers behind a wide range of chronic conditions, such as fatigue, brain fog, food sensitivities, and skin issues – yet, histamine intolerance is often overlooked by conventional medicineMCAS is a condition where certain immune cells – called mast cells – release too many chemicals (like histamine) at the wrong timesUsing diet as a short-term therapeutic tool: A low-histamine diet or Low-FODMAP Dietis not a lifelong diet because tons of healthy foods have histamine in them Consume the freshest foods possible and avoid leftovers, as histamine levels in food rise over time after preparationFoods that are traditionally categorized as “healthy” may be contributing to your histamine issues; these include: aged meats, cheeses, fermented foods, and dairy Even though they are generally healthy, consuming them is like throwing gas on your histamine fire Implementing a low-histamine diet in three phases Phase 1 – remove alcohol, especially beer, wine, and champagne Phase 2 – remove canned and smoke fish (examples: anchovies), processed and fermented meats, aged cheese, pickled and fermented foods (sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurts, kefir, mustard, ketchups, vinegar, soy sauce) Phase 3 – remove plant foods such as spinach, avocado, tomatoes, pineapples, citrus foods Treat IBS with a low-FODMAP diet, which is specifically designed to reduce the fermentable carbohydrates that gut bacteria feed on; this helps reduce: gas production, bloating, bacterial Foods to avoid: Garlic, onions, wheat, legumes, milk, soft cheeses, apples, honey, sorbitol, xylitol, stone fruits, artificial sweetenersFoods to consume: Carrots, spinach, bananas, chicken, rice, cheddar cheese, eggsSupplement to support healthy histamine levels:Quercetin – a natural plant compound that helps people with mast cell issues, histamine intolerance, and allergies (with additional benefits to metabolic function) Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgMany people struggle with mysterious symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, food sensitivities, and skin issues—only to be misdiagnosed or dismissed altogether. In this encore episode, we discuss the role of histamine within the gastrointestinal tract, detailing its regulation of gastric acid secretion and impact on intestinal motility. We examine how histamine-producing enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells, mast cells, and gut microbiota contribute to histaminergic signaling, and how enzymatic degradation via diamine oxidase (DAO) maintains homeostasis. Additionally, we discuss histamine intolerance, highlighting the impacts of dysbiosis (as well as SIBO or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and intestinal barrier dysfunction on DAO insufficiency and histamine accumulation.Topics: 1. Introduction to Histamine & the Gastrointestinal Tract- Role in digestion and motility- Impact of intestinal conditions such as SIBO 2. Histamine as a Biogenic Amine- Definition and classification- L-histidine and histidine decarboxylase (HDC)- Presence in various tissues, including the GI tract 3. Sources of Histamine in the Gut- Enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells in the stomach- Mast cells in the lamina propria- Histamine-producing gut bacteria 4. Histamine's Role in Digestion & Gastric Acid Secretion- Interaction with parietal cells in the stomach- Activation of proton pumps via H₂ receptor binding- Maintenance of acidic pH for digestion- Importance of proper pH within the stomach for protecting against pathogenic microbes- Impact on downstream gut microbiota balance (e.g., SIBO) 5. Histamine & Intestinal Motility- Modulation of gut motility via H₁ and H₃ receptors- H₁ receptor activation leading to contractions (diarrhea, cramping)- H₃ receptor-mediated inhibition of neurotransmitter release (bloating, slow motility) 6. Histamine Intolerance: Definition & Mechanisms- Diamine Oxidase and histamine breakdown- DAO secretion by enterocytes (intestinal epithelial cells)- Enzymatic breakdown of histamine before absorption 7. Factors That Can Affect DAO Activity- Genetic Polymorphisms: AOC1 gene, reduced DAO expression- Cofactor Deficiencies: Copper, vitamin B6, and vitamin C as essential DAO cofactors- Importance of intestinal lining integrity for DAO production- Conditions leading to or associated with enterocyte damage- Intestinal dysbiosis and histamine accumulation- Intestinal dysbiosis & epithelial/enterocyte damage- Suppression of DAO production due to epithelial dysfunction- Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) & Histamine 8. Symptoms of Histamine Intolerance- Gastrointestinal symptoms (bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux...)- Systemic symptoms (dizziness, flushing, migraines...) 9. If you live in an area with pollen, you're dealing with histamines whether you know it or not. They're what's responsible for your runny nose, red eyes, itchy throat, etc. But histamines are also found in food, which for some can lead to high levels in the body and cause symptoms like headaches, bloating, and eczema. You may hear this referred to as histamine intolerance. Spoiler alert: if you're in perimenopause you're more likely to start experiencing some histamine intolerance. In today's episode, we're talking about what histamines are, what foods they're in, what histamine intolerance looks like, and what you can do to balance out the histamine levels in your body. If you've ever felt like your body is falling apart and no doctor can tell you why—this episode is for you. I'm joined by Dr. Jaban Moore, a functional medicine chiropractor who's made it his mission to help people heal from the real root causes of chronic illness—especially the ones most doctors overlook. We get into two things that are finally getting the attention they deserve: nervous system dysregulation and autoimmune overwhelm—specifically Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and histamine intolerance. These are major reasons so many people are struggling with fatigue, food sensitivities, inflammation, reactivated viruses, and mystery symptoms that get dismissed as “just anxiety.” Dr. Jaban shares his own health journey and breaks down: The difference between histamine intolerance and MCAS Why your anxiety, pain, or fatigue might be coming from emotional trauma or nervous system chaos How foundational habits (sunlight, sleep, slowing down) matter more than any supplement Whether elimination diets and food sensitivity tests are healing or just bandaids If you'll ever be able to eat an avocado or tomato again (hint: yes, but not overnight) How to know if you're actually herxing… or just making things worse If you've been told your symptoms are “all in your head,” this conversation will feel like a breath of fresh air. You're not crazy. You're not broken. And yes—healing is possible. Do you experience a range of unexplained symptoms - eczema, skin rashes, fatigue, headaches, IBS, joint pain, poor sleep, or random allergic reactions with no clear trigger? If HRT isn't helping - or even making things worse - or if your blood tests keep coming back normal but you still feel awful, histamine intolerance could be the missing piece of the puzzle. This little-understood condition is tricky to diagnose but more common than you might think. To help unravel this mystery, I'm joined by a leading expert on histamine intolerance, Dr Tina Peers, who also happens to be a menopause specialist, so we're in the best possible hands.Tina first became interested in histamine intolerance through her daughter's long history of unexplained illness. She shares their journey to diagnosis and treatment, which ultimately led her to specialise in this field. Since then, she's helped thousands of people through her clinic. In this episode, we cover:The essential role of histamine in the body and what happens when you can't metabolise it properlyThe typical symptoms of histamine intoleranceThe difference between mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) and histamine intoleranceWhy these conditions are so difficult to diagnoseThe connection between oestrogen and histamine metabolismHow an underlying intolerance can become severe during menopauseManaging histamine intolerance - including the role of a low-histamine dietTina is an absolute mine of information. If you're struggling with a range of unexplained symptoms and finding it hard to get a diagnosis, this episode might just be your lightbulb moment. Histamine is often misunderstood. It's blamed for allergies, hives, and frustrating symptoms like flushing, itching, and congestion. But histamine itself isn't the problem - it's a symptom of a deeper issue.Your gut plays a crucial role in regulating histamine. It houses the bacteria that break it down and keep it in balance. But when the gut is imbalanced, harmful bacteria and yeast take over, inflammation rises, and histamine starts to build up faster than your body can clear it. The result? Chronic allergic responses, food sensitivities, headaches, and even more severe reactions. And here's what most doctors won't tell you - antihistamines don't fix the root cause. While they can be life-saving in severe situations, they work by suppressing symptoms, not by addressing the underlying imbalance. Over time, they can actually make histamine intolerance worse by further disrupting the gut microbiome. You don't have to live in fear of food or rely on medication forever. You can heal.In this episode, I'll walk you through:The real reason histamine builds up in the body (hint: it's not just about your diet). Why long-term antihistamine use can make histamine intolerance worse. How to rebalance your gut so your body can regulate histamine the way it was designed to.If histamine issues have left you feeling stuck, this episode is for you. If you've been dealing with **histamine intolerance, MCAS, or unexplained sensitivities**, you already know that avoiding high-histamine foods and taking antihistamines isn't a real solution. True healing requires **going deeper**—into the nervous system, immune response, chronic infections, and past trauma. In this episode, I break down my **6-layer approach** to healing histamine intolerance and MCAS at the root: ✅ **Chronic Infections & Immune Dysregulation** – Addressing stealth pathogens, mold, parasites, and biofilms that keep your immune system on high alert. ✅ **Felt Danger Response & Nervous System Dysregulation** – How chronic stress, trauma, and an overactive fight-or-flight system drive histamine flares. ✅ **Organ Stagnation & Detox Pathways** – Liver, gallbladder, and gut imbalances that prevent histamine from being properly processed. ✅ **Hormone & Nutrient Imbalances** – The role of estrogen dominance, mitochondrial dysfunction, and missing cofactors in histamine overload. ✅ **Chronic Stress & Trauma** – How past emotional wounds, nervous system dysregulation, and subconscious patterns contribute to MCAS. ✅ **Attachment Wounds & Emotional Regulation** – Exploring how early attachment patterns shape our ability to self-soothe and regulate immune responses. We're also diving deep into **supplements, peptides, immune modulation techniques, neurotransmitter balancing, trauma healing, self-soothing strategies, flare support, and more.** If you're ready to take control of your healing, check out my **$25 ebook**, where I go even deeper into these layers, and my **$33 masterclass**, which gives you an actionable plan for rebuilding your health. **Get them here:** https://thehealerrevolution.practicebetter.io/#/61edf7263980330eec3a0490/bookingsListen now to start understanding your body on a deeper level. Key Points: The truth about processed foods and why they're sabotaging your health goals We discuss the importance of eating real ingredients instead of processed products. Understanding the histamine load: What foods should you avoid and why? We break down the confusing list of high-histamine foods. Things like ripe fruit and processed meats often raise questions, and we share tips on how to identify which ones might be triggering issues for you. How to manage histamine intolerance without feeling overwhelmed We talk about the mindset shift needed to avoid the trap of perfectionism. It's about listening to your body and becoming a “food detective” to figure out what works and what doesn't—rather than trying to follow rigid rules. Practical kitchen tips for a low-histamine diet We cover strategies to prevent histamine build-up, such as handling leftovers quickly and focusing on fresh ingredients. Slow eating and mindful meal prep can also make a big difference in how you feel afterward. Navigating the grocery store with histamine intolerance: What to buy and what to avoid We discuss the importance of reading labels and staying aware of unregulated flavor additives. Making thoughtful, informed decisions helps ensure you choose foods that support rather than sabotage your health. Why local sourcing matters for managing histamine intolerance We explain how buying directly from local farmers can significantly reduce the histamine load. When you know exactly where your food comes from, it's easier to trust what goes into it—and that extra step can be well worth the effort. James Barry delivers practical, grounded advice on how to simplify your approach to food without sacrificing taste. In this episode, we go through the role of histamine within the gastrointestinal tract, exploring its regulation of gastric acid secretion and impact on intestinal motility. We examine how histamine-producing enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells, mast cells, and gut microbiota contribute to histaminergic signaling, and how enzymatic degradation via diamine oxidase (DAO) maintains homeostasis. Additionally, we discuss histamine intolerance, highlighting the impacts of dysbiosis (as well as SIBO or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and intestinal barrier dysfunction on DAO insufficiency and histamine accumulation. Topics: 1. Introduction to Histamine & the Gastrointestinal Tract Role in digestion and motility Impact of intestinal conditions such as SIBO 2. Histamine as a Biogenic Amine Definition and classification L-histidine and histidine decarboxylase (HDC) Presence in various tissues, including the GI tract 3. Sources of Histamine in the Gut Enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells in the stomach Mast cells in the lamina propria Histamine-producing gut bacteria 4. Histamine's Role in Digestion & Gastric Acid Secretion Interaction with parietal cells in the stomach Activation of proton pumps via H₂ receptor binding Maintenance of acidic pH for digestion Importance of proper pH within the stomach for protecting against pathogenic microbes Impact on downstream gut microbiota balance (e.g., SIBO) 5. Histamine & Intestinal Motility Modulation of gut motility via H₁ and H₃ receptors H₁ receptor activation leading to contractions (diarrhea, cramping) H₃ receptor-mediated inhibition of neurotransmitter release (bloating, slow motility) 6. Histamine Intolerance: Definition & Mechanisms Diamine Oxidase and histamine breakdown DAO secretion by enterocytes (intestinal epithelial cells) Enzymatic breakdown of histamine before absorption 7. Factors That Can Affect DAO Activity Genetic Polymorphisms: AOC1 gene, reduced DAO expression Cofactor Deficiencies: Copper, vitamin B6, and vitamin C as essential DAO cofactors Importance of intestinal lining integrity for DAO production Conditions leading to or associated with enterocyte damage Intestinal dysbiosis and histamine accumulation Intestinal dysbiosis & epithelial/enterocyte damage Suppression of DAO production due to epithelial dysfunction Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) & Histamine 8. Symptoms of Histamine Intolerance Gastrointestinal symptoms (bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux...) Systemic symptoms (dizziness, flushing, migraines...) 9. In this episode, we not only discuss why you're experiencing unexplained, mysterious symptoms that no doctor can pinpoint, but I also share my own health struggles that I've been dealing with since 2020—struggles I haven't shared much about on Instagram or other social platforms. There seems to be a HUGE link between people who had COVID, like I did back in 2020, and current health issues that either haven't gone away or only seem to flare up intermittently. If you've been dealing with symptoms like exercise intolerance, a racing heartbeat, anxiety that comes out of nowhere (even when you know you're not fearful or anxious about anything), insomnia, waking up to pee 3-5 times during the night, or symptoms of a UTI but the tests always come back negative, then keep listening. These side effects and reactions are just a few of the many random, mysterious issues that could be linked to histamine intolerance, which is also tied to COVID. I speak with Michelle Shapiro, who explains in more detail what histamine intolerance is, which foods and wellness routines trigger it (such as exercise, vitamin C IVs, drinking bone broth, and other popular “wellness regimens” many of us do) that could actually be hindering your health and causing these so-called “flare-ups.” We discuss why these symptoms may come and go in flares, and why some days or months we feel fine, but then suddenly experience a loss of energy, skin rashes, and chronic gut issues that last for weeks. Speaking of gut issues—if you feel like your digestion has never been the same since you had COVID, there could be a connection. Michelle breaks it all down and explains how we can take steps to get our lives back. There's good news, though! Please save this episode to reference later, share it with a friend or family member, and post it on social media so others can benefit from listening. Ever heard of immunoglobulins? While colostrum is experiencing a renaissance, you should seriously weigh the immunoglobulin supplement versus colostrum benefits.Partly because colostrum is a LOWER potency option, that sometimes isn't even standardized (depending on the brand) to guarantee how helpful it will be.That said, immunoglobulins (aka. IgGs) can be incredibly helpful for things like leaky gut (gut permeability), histamine intolerance, recovering from a stomach bug or food poisoning, and supporting your immune system during cold + flu season.Plus, I'm going to share why I prefer immunoglobulin supplements over colostrum, what the difference is between the two, and how to use them. Also, I want to how you how to avoid the fake, over-hyped colostrum + immunoglobulin supplements found online (even on Amazon)!Let's dive in!In This Episode:How I learned about the amazing benefits of immunoglobulin supplementWhy you should use immunoglobulinsDifference between immunoglobulins and colostrum benefitsHow do immunoglobulins work?Benefits of immunoglobulinsHow to take an immunoglobulin supplementBest immunoglobulin supplement + where to get itQuotes“[Immunoglobulins] were traditionally used and still are actually for more diarrhea-dominant problems. So if you've got a lot of loose soft stools, diarrhea, or even something like inflammatory bowel disease.”“IgGs can be found in the serum of your blood, and they also can be found in the serum of the blood of cows. And so historically, when people supplement with colostrum, that's derived from dairy, and it contains IgGs. So they are similar in that colostrum has IgGs and it's one of the major components that makes it so helpful, but it's not as potent.”LinksGET REAL, VERIFIED IMMUNOGLOBULINS HEREHealthy Skin Show ep. 188: Histamine Intolerance + Skin Rashes (PART 1)Healthy Skin Show ep. 192: Histamine Intolerance + Skin Rashes, PART 2
