This week, Cozi tells Bri about Céline Sciamma's incredibly sweet and incredibly French indie film Petite Maman (2021). Will she want to see it for its wonderful concept that Cozi avoids talking about? Has she already seen it since this recording? Who knows, who could even knowRecommendations:Bri – Get a personal pie and eat it!Cozi – The film Universal Language (2024)
This was a movie! It came out in theaters and everything! In spite of the fact that there hadn't been any MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN content in more than 50 years! The results are ... well, listen to the show. This week's recommendations: Robin is passionate about GHOSTLIGHT and PETITE MAMAN. Sean is perfectly fine with LAST BREATH and gobsmacked by DARK CITY. Kahmeela thinks you should get around to watching JACK REACHER, if you haven't.
In which the Mister joins me in reviewing PETITE MAMAN (2021), from writer/director Céline Sciamma. After the death of her beloved grandmother, young Nelly (Joséphine Sanz) is taken by her parents to clear out her grandmother's home. While exploring the nearby woods, she meets and befriends a young girl named Marion (Gabrielle Sanz). What follows is a lovely tale that explains through mysterious circumstances, the true bond of their friendship and how they learn to cope with grief through their shared support for each other. The film clocks in at 1 h and 13 m, is rated PG and is currently streaming on Hulu and to buy/rent on Prime Video. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My friend Karolin joins me on this episode to talk about something we both really love - the coming-of-age film (and show). We spoke about why we love them, the depiction of movie high school and how they affected our own high school expectations, our list of the films and shows that mean the most to us, and a whole lot more. Original Release Date: Monday 3 June 2024 Description: This week's show begins with a correction about the great Death Race 2000 (discussed two episodes back) and about the talented filmmakers behind it. Then, in “What We're Reading”, Dean discusses the Beatrice Hyde-Clare Mysteries and Phil reveals his thoughts inspired by Brian Greene's The Hidden Reality. These thoughts, in turn, lead to stories about UCLA great Bill Walton, who died this past week, and the Integratron, which Phil visited before last week's show. After discussions of Multiverse theory, sound baths, and the wit and wisdom of John Wooden, focus shifts to a staggering array of movies and television shows. The movies include Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the Egyptian comedy Voy Voy Voy, the Canadian vampire film Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, and the great Céline Sciamma's Petite Maman. The television shows are “The Mandalorian”, (followed by a deep dive into the entire Star Wars small screen universe), “Star Trek: Discovery”, (followed by an examination of a fatal flaw that has doomed “Star Trek” at various points in its history), and the genre mash-up Colin Farrell vehicle “Sugar” (for Apple TV +). After that, a question from a loyal listener like you (yes, YOU!) leads to a discussion about the large screen format ScreenX. Finally, in “Celebrity Deaths”, Phil quizzes Dean about a convicted felon-turned-actor and a two-time Oscar Winner for Best Picture!

hello listeners! first i come to you with news of The Lavender Menace match making service currently live on the Patreon! SINGLES/NON-MONOG ONLY!!! also butches please fill out the form... the numbers are in your favor right now.episode 15 of season 4 was filmed in december 2022 and is a part of the collection of Sunnaissance IRL video content. we respond to a hot take that references The Will to Change by bell hooks and the necessity of communicating with men. we return to the question of how to decenter men without falling into the fallacies of lesbian separatism (a really good question). then we respond to a hot take about bisexual people not having a slur and also the bi vs pan distinction when moving in online spaces.our shared media portion of the episode is the Céline Sciamma directed film Petite Maman (2022). we were very excited to talk about this movie because we got to watch it on the big screen together in a theater to ourselves. we find ourselves at the beautiful intersection of Sunny's love for speculative fiction and Renaissance's love for French Romanticism (psst... read Renaissance's Taylor Swift x Romanticism essay on substack). it should not be a surprise that our passions overlap in a movie about mother-daughter relationships. a classic motif of the reviewed content here.like usual, we end the episode recommending each other pieces of media. Renaissance recommends A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) directed by Ana Lily Amirpour. It is a contemporary Iranian noir vampire film with a proclivity for showing feminist acts of violence. (yay!!) Sunny references The Never Learn by Layne Fargo in response to the film. Sunny recommends the (FRENCH) graphic novel Thieves by Lucie Bryon. "It's kind of like Heartstopper if it was French and for girls" - Sunny describing the book.hope you enjoy this episode!PatreonTwitterYoutube

| Review | A quick update on what's new before we get into this very short French art feature by auteur Céline Sciamma. “Petite Maman” is a beautifully crafted magical realism story that follows Nelly, an 8-year old girl, who encounters her mother at the same age that Nelly is now.
Pamela Ribon, screenwriter (Ralph Breaks the Internet, Moana), novelist (My Boyfriend is a Bear), comic book writer, and more) joins the crew to discuss Petite Maman, a movie that both Drea AND Alonso put on their best-of-the-year list in 2021. This week Drusilla and Josh watch David Cronenberg's "Crash" with filmmaker Chelsea Stardust, which Wikipedia describes as follows: "Crash is a 1996 psychological thriller film written, produced and directed by David Cronenberg, based on J. G. Ballard's 1973 novel of the same name. Starring James Spader, Deborah Kara Unger, Elias Koteas, Holly Hunter and Rosanna Arquette, it follows a film producer who becomes involved with a group of symphorophiliacs who are strangely aroused by car crashes." But first...Everybody hates their moms, Chelsea watched "Eyes of Fire" from the All the Haunts Be Ours boxset from Severin films, "Stepford Wives", "Petite Maman", "We're All Going to the World's Fair", "Bunny Lake is Missing", "Kalifornia." Drusilla watched "Arsenic and Old Lace" at The New Beverly, "Reds", Josh rewatched "American Psycho" and the gang goes off on director Mary Harron and "I Shot Andy Warhol".Then the gang gets into the feature. James Spader (not David Spade) eats a lot of ass in this. This film was sexually liberating for college-aged Chelsea and Drusilla both. We get a graphic designer's perspective on the credits, they discuss the marriage at the center of the film, they discuss the film's legacy from Cannes and the critical response and cultural homophobia. Francis Ford Coppola is a nerd. Josh worries about people being prudes these days. Rosanna Arquette keeps joints in her leg compartment. Bring on the bombast! That's what we say here at Breakfast All Day. The video for Lady Gaga's theme song from “Top Gun: Maverick” is out, and it's exactly as over the top as you want it to be (it's also insanely catchy and still stuck in Christy's head). Also in news, Alonso and Christy talk about Dave Chappelle, Amber Heard, Kim Kardashian, trailers for David Cronenberg's “Crimes of the Future” and Disney+'s “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” and the illustrated children book of “Petite Maman,” if you feel like sobbing alone in the comfort of your own home. We also have a couple of reviews, of course: the adorable queer rom-com “Crush” on Hulu, and the French abortion drama “Happening,” which is excellent and unfortunately all-too relevant. And over at our Patreon, we recap the “Moon Knight” finale and the latest episode of “The Offer.” Hold our hand and join us!

We talk with 'New Yorker' writer John Colapinto, author of This Is the Voice, about how voices work, how they evolved in our prehistoric ancestors, how babies learn to vocalize words of their parents' languages so quickly, and what makes voices sexy or authoritative. Colapinto's own vocal injury led him to explore this subject.Film critic Justin Chang reviews Petite Maman, a new film by Portrait of a Lady on Fire director Céline Sciamma.

After 2019's Portrait of a Lady of Fire, we were eagerly awaiting Céline Sciamma's next feature. Her new film, Petite Maman, is now finally in theaters, and it's something of a surprise: a sweet, magical-realist story about a little girl who meets and befriends a younger version of her grieving mother. It's a more modest film than the swooning period romance of Portrait of a Lady on Fire, but Petite Maman is just as profound in its play with gender roles and women's inner worlds. As Amy Taubin writes in an essay in this week's Film Comment Letter, “All of Sciamma's films contain autobiographical elements, but none are as revealing as Petite Maman's portrait of the filmmaker as a fledgling tomboy writer/director, already eager to claim all roles on-screen and off that only have been bestowed on men.” FC Editors Clinton Krute and Devika Girish sat down with the director over Zoom to dig into those autobiographical elements, the film's deceptive simplicity, Sciamma's love of classic children's films, and much more.
We will avenge you this week on Breakfast All Day with a review of one of the most anticipated films in a while. Christy and Alonso rave about “The Northman,” the latest trippy saga from director and co-writer Robert Eggers. We also review “Petite Maman,” Celine Sciamma'a deeply moving French gem, which was one of our favorite movies of 2021 and is finally in theaters. In news, we discuss CNN+, Jerry West, Johnny Depp (again), Ezra Miller (again), George Michael and “Grease 2.” And over at our Patreon, we recap episode 4 of “Moon Knight,” which was finally good! Let us know your thoughts on all of this, and thanks for sharing some of your time with us. To learn more about the fine folks at The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana, CA — our latest Movie House Shout-Out, where “The Northman” is playing starting this weekend — you can check out their programming or become a donor on their website.
The new film from Apichatpong Weerasethakul isn't just a movie – it's a perpetual roadshow, with plans to keep showing the movie from theater to theater indefinitely (check out where it's showing for the next few months). It made a lot of best-of 2021 lists and now that the show is finally on the road, our gang weighs in, joined by LA Times film critic Justing Chang. What's GoodAlonso: A banner week at the Hallmark channelDrea: “Double jury week” and SIFFJustin: Writing about Petite Maman (in clean clothes)Ify: new Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann tattoo; AtlantaITIDICThe tenth Fast and Furious Movie has its titleTom Hanks Reunited With Wilson the Volleyball at Baseball GameArt House Theater Tests Out “Bring a Friend” Ticket Sales StrategyHotline Recs Wild ZeroMindwalkShagKumiko, the Treasure HunterSieranevada (read Justin's review) (Have a question for the hotline? How long will food prices continue to surge? They've been going up due to pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. More people are turning to food banks due to higher costs of groceries and gas. They're also weighing what to prioritize first — food or bills. Nearly half of the top 25 most polluted cities in the U.S. are in California, according to The American Lung Association. What's causing the bad air quality? Critics review the latest film releases: “The Northman,” “Petite Maman,” “Saturday Fiction,” and “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.” April 23 is Record Store Day — a celebration of local music shops and vinyl records. Compared to digital, vinyl sounds more permanent, says KCRW DJ Travis Holcombe.
