Mindie Lind is a Seattle-based musician. In a new short animated film called "View from the Floor", Lind and co-director Megan Griffiths explore Mindie’s life as an artist grappling with imposter syndrome. Mindie was born without legs. And as she came of age, she couldn’t shake the idea that the praise and attention she received was more about her disability, and people looking to create “inspiration porn,” rather than her talent. View from the Floor debuted at Sundance this year and is available to view online now through the New York Times. If there's a minor blessing that has emerged from the pandemic, it's in the way that film festivals have shifted and persisted with online options. As one of the leading film festivals in the world, the Sundance Film Festival continues to bring selections of their festival to global audiences via their online and in person screening events. The 2025 festival is underway, with online screenings taking place from January 30 - February 3.I mention this as one of the values of being able to attend the festival remotely is that I can stay safe as a disabled, immunocompromised person. It also then means I can watch films like Mindie Lind and Megan Griffiths superb animated short View from the Floor. This five minute documentary tells Mindie's story as a musician, a writer, a director, and as someone who lives with disability.Mindie doesn't have any legs, and while she gets around in a wheelchair, it's that view from the floor that she's forced to present on television when she becomes a guest on the Maury Povich show. With a comedic and open narration, Mindie takes viewers from her initial perspective of being invited on the show (this is in the era before 'who's your babies dad' reveals dominated the show) to the feeling she had when the producers asked her to go on stage without her wheelchair.View from the Floor decisively and intimately unpacks the concept of inspiration porn, which leads to a further discussion about the exploitation of disabled folks, especially in relation to entertainment. As co-directors, Mindie and Megan utilise the bright and expressive animation from Joe Garber to bring a sense of comedy and charm to Mindie's story, allowing non-disabled and disabled folk to understand how inspiration porn impacts everyone's lives. In the following interview, Mindie and Megan talk about meeting through the late, great filmmaker Lynn Shelton, dealing with cat calls and more, the importance of stories about disability being able to reach a global audience, how they created the look and sound of the film, before Mindie closes the chat with an interesting fact about the person who played ET on set.To help support Mindie and Megan in transforming View from the Floor into a feature film, visit ViewFromTheFloor.com. You can donate on that site, while also checking out the artwork and listen to Mindie's song as heard in the film. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This little piggy escaped and wreaked havoc on crops and the environmentWild pigs that have escaped or been released from farms have established self-sustaining populations in the prairies and central Canada and are wreaking havoc on farms and wilderness landscapes alike. A new study, led by Ryan Brook at the University of Saskatchewan, has tracked pigs to try to understand where, and how far, this porcine invasion can go. The research was published in the journal Biological Invasions.Satellites and space junk burning up in the atmosphere is a new kind of pollutionScientists doing high-altitude sampling of material deposited when meteorites burn up in the atmosphere are seeing a shift in the material they've been collecting. In a recent study in the journal PNAS, scientists found that increasingly the particles contain material that could have only come from vaporized space junk, such as the upper stages of rocket boosters and re-entering satellites themselves. Daniel Cziczo, an atmospheric scientist at Purdue University, said they're now trying to find out what kind of impact this in material in the stratosphere may have on things like the ozone layer and global warming.A 200 million year old marine reptile the size of a blue whaleHundreds of millions of years ago, long before dinosaurs roamed the surface of our planet, ichthyosaurs ruled the Earth's oceans. Analysis of bones found in a river basin in the UK suggests a new species might have been one the biggest marine animals that ever lived. Paleontologist Jimmy Waldron was part of the team, who published their research in the journal PLOS One. Fox skulls are optimized for diving into snowFoxes hunt in winter by listening for rodents under deep snow and then leaping and diving into the snow, plunging down to snatch their prey. A team including Sunghwan Jung, a professor of Biological and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University, did a unique experiment to confirm that the pointed shape of the fox skull is better than any other shape they tested at penetrating deep into snow. The research was published in the journal PNAS.Scientists propose a plan to study self-spreading vaccinesResearchers concerned with emerging diseases like H5N1 bird flu, which has devastated wild bird populations, are proposing a controversial way to stop the disease. Megan Griffiths, a postdoctoral researcher in viral ecology at the University of Glasgow, says transmissible vaccines would use harmless viruses to carry vaccines against pathogenic viruses. She's the co-author of a recent study in the journal Science that presents a framework for how they could safely develop self-spreading vaccines. The logic behind creating more dangerous viruses to understand them betterAnticipating how dangerous viruses — like avian influenza or coronaviruses — could transform from more innocuous forms into much more dangerous ones could help us prepare for future pandemics. Ron Fouchier, a molecular virologist at the Erasmus Medical Centre in Holland, says without doing “gain of function” research, like the kind he published in the journal Science in 2012, we never would have known which changes to lookout for with the current global H5N1 outbreak. Gain of function research, which involves experimenting with viruses to make them more dangerous, has become increasingly controversial, but Fouchier says with Europe's strict regulations to ensure safety, the risk is worth the reward.

When Megan Griffiths finished film school she didn't head to New York or Los Angeles. Griffiths decided to make movies in Seattle after falling in love with the city's music scene in the early 1990's. Griffiths has built a career making both independent feature films in Washington State and directing bigger budget television shows in Hollywood but her heart belongs to Seattle.  The filmmaker, sidelined by the Writer's Guild of America strike, took some time to talk about her movies and Seattle's film community, with co-hosts Marcie Sillman and Vivian Phillips.

I'LL SHOW YOU MINE tells the story of Priya Sura (Poorna Jagannathan), an author who found breakout success when she wrote a memoir about her abusive father. She has since made a career of exploring her own trauma through a feminist lens. Recently, however, she has been finding it harder and harder to have an emotional connection in her writing. So she's now mining someone else's trauma by interviewing Nic (Casey Thomas Brown), her nephew by marriage, about his history of exploitation as a gender nonconforming model and pansexual poster boy. But Nic won't engage without a quid pro quo, so to get to the most hidden parts of his story, she must dig into areas she has scrupulously managed to avoid in her own. Director Megan Griffiths (Eden, Lucky Them) joins us for a conversation on the challenges and rewards that come from a two actor film project, working with the talented duo of Poorna Jagannathan (The Night Of, Never Have I Ever) and Casey Thomas Brown (The Kominsky Method) and how finding a cinematic sweet spot for an engaging, and insightful character driven story about trauma and recognition. Megs is a true badass in the enduro world for more reasons that we can count and she's one of our heroes. We love following Megs journey for two reasons, she's awesome on the bike, and she's awesome at social media (both of which we can generally only aspire to dream about). Meg has been doing things her own way for just about forever. She didn't let anyone tell her to ride a dirt bike (except maybe the sales team where she almost bought a quad), and she didn't let anyone stop her starting her own business. We chat through how she got into riding, why she decided to start her clinics, and what you can expect to learn if you take one. We also dig into Megs clear tenacity, talking through how she spent the Covid months living in the woods to preserve her savings and how her stable of bikes comes hard won. It's the end of April's (Hannah Marks, Slash) senior year of high school, when she and longtime boyfriend Nick (Dylan Sprouse, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody) break up. While getting trashed at a house party, she bumps into Dylan's new squeeze, Clara (Liana Liberato, also in To the Stars), a recent transplant from Fresno. BANANA SPLIT is set against the backdrop of April’s last days before heading off to college. Her plans for her last few high school months are about to hit a snag when she becomes best friends with her ex-boyfriend’s new squeeze. Usual teen social norms mean that they have to hate each, but it turns out they have way more in common than a mutual beau. Over the summer Clara and April develop a perfect kindred-spirit friendship in ways they never thought possible, all while working overtime to keep their relationship secret from Nick. Director Benjamin Kasulke (Your Sister's Sister, Safety Not Guaranteed), stops by to talk about working with co-writer / co-star Hannah Marks, making the transition from cinematographer to director and finding the sweet spot of believability in this very entertaining teen drama / comedy. About the filmmaker Benjamin Francis Kasulke is a director, cinematographer, and Stranger Genius Award recipient born in 1977 in Syracuse, NY. After earning degrees in film from Ithaca College and FAMU  (Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts) in Prague, he worked as a negative cutter with the Image Treasury in Seattle. His cinematographer career began while working extensively with the local dance film community, which he turned into collaborations with the likes of Guy Maddin, Lynn Shelton, Megan Griffiths, and Colin Trevorrow. He became a vital component of the Pacific Northwest film community, acting as cinematographer on such films as Humpday and The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle (both SIFF 2009), The Freebie (SIFF 2010), The Off Hours (SIFF 2011), Your Sister's Sister (SIFF 2012), Safety Not Guaranteed (2012), Touchy Feely (SIFF 2013), Laggies (2014), and My Last Year With The Nuns (SIFF 2014). Banana Split marks his feature directorial debut. This week we have the director of the new drama Sadie, Seattle's own Megan Griffiths. The genre film that she has chosen to discuss is Terry Gilliam's weirdo time travel movie 12 Monkeys. Megan and April really get into the ins and outs of working in independent cinema; from the casting to achieving control on set. Megan discusses how she and Terry Gilliam have the similarity of not working within the Hollywood system; Gilliam living in London while Megan lives in Seattle. She elaborates on her new movie Sadie and shooting in a trailer park with Melanie Lynskey. April and she also cover shooting nudity and the need for the actors to be completely comfortable. This is a great conversation that proves you don't have to work within the confines of Hollywood in order to be a successful filmmaker. Check out the trailer for Sadie which is in theaters now. And if you haven't seen it yet, go watch 12 Monkeys With April Wolfe with Megan Griffiths. You can let us know what you think of Switchblade Sisters at @SwitchbladePod on Twitter. On the latest episode of the Talkhouse Podcast, Jurassic World's Colin Trevorrow sits down with his fellow director and longtime friend Megan Griffiths, whose new movie Sadie, starring Melanie Lynskey, John Gallagher Jr and emerging star Sophia Mitri Schloss, is in select theaters from October 12. The two filmmakers, both veterans of the vibrant Seattle indie scene, discuss everything from the correct pronunciation of their names (spoiler: people always say Trevorrow's wrong) to how their upbringings shaped them as directors, while also touching on such topics as diversity in Hollywood, Bryce Dallas Howard's footwear in Jurassic World, why Griffiths is an ideal candidate to direct blockbusters, the myth of Trevorrow's “overnight success,” and much, much more. SADIE is the story of a 13-year-old girl who lives at Shady Plains Trailer Park with her mother while her father serves repeated tours in the military. Her dad has broken many promises that he will return, but Sadie (Sophia Mitri Schloss) idolizes him and believes in his cause, so she waits, preserving his place on the home-front. Less patient is her mom, Rae (Melanie Lynskey) who stopped receiving letters or calls from her husband years ago. She has been half-heartedly dating the counselor from Sadie’s school, Bradley (Tony Hale) but it isn’t until a mysterious newcomer moves in next door that she truly considers moving on. Rae’s best friend is Carla (Danielle Brooks,) who works at the local bar and has a penchant for unavailable men. Carla's son Francis (Keith L. Williams) and her retired father Deak (Tee Dennard) are Sadie’s charge and confidante, respectively. The arrival of Cyrus (John Gallagher, Jr.) disrupts the balance of life at Shady Plains. When Sadie sees a relationship developing between Cyrus and Rae, she pledges to come between them, whatever it takes. Cyrus becomes the enemy, and if she’s learned nothing else from the world she inhabits, it’s that the enemy deserves no mercy. Director and Writer Megan Griffiths joins us to talk about her gritty, heartfelt drama about class, addiction and growing up on the margins. For news and updates go to: sadiefilm.com
