This week it's another Cynic's Choice! Has Chelsea picked an actual Rom Com, or has she pulled a fast one on the LAFSters yet again? As our hosts dive into Laggies (2014), Madison may be too distracted by Keira Knightley's American-accented performance to notice. With Sam Rockwell and Cholë Grace Moretz, this tale of feeling lost in adulthood — caught between expectation and personal truth — leads to messy exit strategies. You may have your ducks in a row, or you might just be a silly goose swimming in a pond of your own. The cinematic world of love and laughter had rom-com enthusiast Madison head over heels from the time Harry met Sally. For genre skeptic Chelsea, however, it's been a grueling enemies-to-lovers plot. In Love at First Screening, Madison introduces Chelsea to all the fan-favorite love stories she's never wanted to watch. One friend's passion might be the other's displeasure, but doesn't love conquer all? Tune in every Wednesday to find out.
Jasmin Savoy Brown's been racking up impressive film and television credits for quite some time, but she skyrocketed to the top of the Collider Ladies Night guest bucket list in January 2022 courtesy of Scream.Yes, there are many pre-Scream titles of Brown's I'd highly recommend — The Leftovers, Laggies, and Sound of Violence being major standouts — but Brown carries one particular scene in Scream that quickly became a favorite scene of the franchise, and of all-time — the scene in which Mindy explains the rules of the new movie. It's brilliant writing, but it's also dialogue that only works in the hands of the most adept performer, someone who's able to play into the comedic meta nature of the franchise while also respecting the fact that the series has amassed a slew of diehard fans. “To some people, the original is their favorite thing in the world, the movie that made them love horror, that mom or dad showed them when they were 10 that bonded them together.” That right there is me, and Brown delivers that dialogue in a way that's both playful and reverential, and also sparks a feeling that very few scenes achieve; it suddenly feels like the whole world's melted away and Mindy is talking directly to you.Brown cemented her place on the Collider Ladies Night guest bucket list even further with Yellowjackets. In an ensemble packed with top-notch talent, Brown shines via Taissa's determination and tenacity, and also the infectious love and warmth between her and Van (Liv Hewson). As things get darker (and colder) in Season 2, Brown soars while exploring the physical and emotional complexity of Tai's situation, how it's impacting her relationship with Van, her place in the group, and the person she's becoming.Want yet another reason Brown's a must-have guest on Collider Ladies Night? Since skyrocketing in Hollywood via Scream and Yellowjackets, she's using her ever-growing reach and platform to encourage positive representation. Brown's a true force in this business, and one that's changing it for the better, making her the ideal Collider Ladies Night guest. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Violet and Bonnie are headed to Seattle for a little-seen independent about trying to adult through a quarter-life crisis. If you like your romances a little quieter, well-acted, and completely relatable, you will like "Laggies". Did we mention the winning combo of Keira Knightley, Sam Rockwell, and Chloe Grace Moretz? We've got female friendships, a mid-century modern vibe, and Shelley the tortoise. Come for the coming-of-age storyline, but stay for the relatable comedy. It's not a joke if it's not insulting.
The 2014 A24 film Laggies, directed by Lynn Shelton, is about a directionless 28 year old named Megan (played by Keira Knightley) in a dead-end relationship that meets a 16 year old named Annika (played by Chloe Grace Moretz) who provides a spark to her life after Megan found her dad cheating on her mom. It isn't long before these A24 nerds dig deeper into this movie and provide insight from their own life on the trials and tribulations of figuring out what they want to do in the world. Will this philosophical debate lead them to giving this film a good grade?

Outside In comes after a big box office failure from writer/director Lynn Shelton with her film Laggies. That film never found its audience and lost a lot of money, so it makes sense that Shelton returned to her ‘even more indie' roots, teaming up with Mark and Jay Duplass again to make this film with a lower, indie-sized budget. Outside In features Edie Falco as a high school teacher who worked for years to help free a former student, played by Jay Duplass, from prison after being wrongfully convicted in a murder case. She and Duplass have a complicated and messy emotional affair, all while he tries to figure out post-prison life and she tries to sort out her failing marriage and her relationship with her daughter. It's a touching, powerful film that resonates well with us, and is a strong turn for Shelton to try her hand at a straight-up drama. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Lynn Shelton series with her 2017 film Outside In. Here's a hint at what we talk about. Who's our favorite Duplass brother? And why haven't we seen as much of Jay? Does Shelton direct a straightforward drama better than when she directs comedy? Edie Falco, Jay Duplass, and Kaitlyn Dever are so great to watch, particularly Falco who works so well here. Why didn't she get more attention? Why didn't the film get more attention overall? Does this small town in the Pacific Northwest stand out as compared to her other PacNorth locations? The script that Duplass and Shelton co-wrote works effectively because it conveys a lot with little bits of info. And Shelton's penchant for messy people and forgiveness continues in this film! We both really loved this film. In Shelton's career, it's a standout. Check it out then tune in! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins! Two movies about redemption, where lost individuals must decide to change themselves for the better — it's Groundhog Day vs Laggies.

Laggies was Lynn Shelton's chance to step up and make a film for a bit more money than she's had before. She's not working with the Duplass brothers. She's directing an original script that she didn't write. So how does it fare compared to her earlier work? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we hit the midpoint of our Lynn Shelton series with her 2014 film Laggies, starring Keira Knightley, Sam Rockwell, Chloë Grace Moretz, Ellie Kemper, Mark Webber, and Kaitlyn Dever. Here's a hint at what we talk about. What's with the title? According to Andrea Seigel, the screenwriter, a laggie is an adult slacker and is a common term. Shelton and the producers all went along with it before learning it really meant nothing. But hey – that's how words get started, right? Sam Rockwell and Keira Knightley are fantastic in their roles, and the script has some laughs, but why does everything feel so expected? It's frustrating that Megan, Knightley's character, seems to be struggling with her group of friends and her boyfriend, but we don't like any of them from the start which makes for story problems. Shelton definitely seems to have a thing for human faults and forgiveness. We've seen it in all the films in this series so far, but why does it work better sometimes than at others? Do they do much to capture the Seattle area in Laggies? And how did Shelton do with stepping out of her indie comfort zone to make this bigger budget film? It's a film that strikes a chord for many people but wasn't something we connected to that much. Regardless, the main characters are a delight and there are some really strong moments. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins! Some spooky classics to get you in the holiday mood, read for you by people who know what it means to spread fear... Dinah Manoff (Maggie Peterson AKA Chucky's first victim in Child's Play) reads Edgar Allan Poe's Tell-Tale Heart, Dylan Arnold (Cameron Elam AKA The Boyfriend in 2018's Halloween) reads Poe's The Raven, And Jim Anderson reads The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. An actor, playwright, coach, and teacher, Dinah’s extensive Broadway credits include I Ought to Be in Pictures (Theater World and Tony Award as Best Featured Actress), Leader of the Pack, Alfred and Victoria, Kingdom of Earth, Gifted Children, and Telegrams From Heaven (Best Director of the Year and playwright). On TV, she was a series regular on Soap, and is best known for her portrayal “Carol Weston,” the character she played for seven years on Empty Nest. She has also appeared in Maid For Each Other (playwright) and the acclaimed ABC family series State of Grace (Jewish Image Award). As a TV director, she has helmed episodes of Sabrina, Movie Stars, Brothers, and numerous episodes of Empty Nest. Film credits include Grease, Ordinary People, Bloodhounds of Broadway, Child’s Play, Staying Together, Backfire, I Ought to Be in Pictures, Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael, and the independent film, Bart Got a Room. When Dylan Arnold was growing up on Bainbridge Island he often said he would live at BPA if he could. And he almost did. From the ages of eight to fifteen he enrolled in almost every theatre class, and appeared in numerous main stage productions. His dedication to acting took him to Idyllwild Arts Academy for high school, and then to the University of North Carolina School for the Arts where he earned his BFA in Drama. Dylan is now a working actor in L.A. and is involved in film, television, and occasionally theatre. Some of his film & TV credits include: Laggies; the ABC miniseries, When We Rise; Mudbound; S.W.A.T.; Halloween & Halloween Kills; Nashville; The Purge TV series; The After Series; and Hulu’s Into the Dark. He also appeared on stage in Good Boys at the Pasadena Playhouse. Dylan would like to give a huge thank you to the entire BPA family for providing a safe, loving environment for him to discover his passion. As you might imagine, there are tons of Jim Andersons in the world. For professional purposes, Jim is James E. Anderson III, but he wants you to know, you can call him Jimmah. Jim lives in the Los Angeles area - his hometown - to which he relocated in 2018 to pursue training, inspiration and employment in the world of acting. He has worked in commercials, independent features, shorts and student films and, most recently, was the voice of the Narrator in the BPA production of “B.I. P.I.” In the age of quarantine, theatres are dark, casting offices are closed and Hollywood is moribund. Writing stories, plays and the obligatory LA pursuit, writing a screenplay, along with creating and self- taping character monologues have kept me in the game. I’m most grateful to BPA, Miranda Feldtman and Liz Ellis for bringing me on board for this project. On this episode of Paid in Puke, we pay tribute to the late Seattle film auteur, Lynn Shelton, who recently passed away unexpectedly at the age of 54. We celebrate her career with 2013's Touchy Feely, which Lynn also wrote, and 2014's Laggies, written by Andrea Seigel. Touchy Feely stars Rosemarie Dewitt and Ellen Page. Laggies stars Kiera Knightly and Chloe Grace Mortez. They share common themes of women who are at an existential crossroads and must take drastic steps to move forward. Lynn was very beloved, not just in Seattle, but by all who knew her. Rest in Power, Lynn.
This week I pay tribute to Lynn Shelton! Join me for a short chat with myself as I share my recent dive into her films. Indie films on the chat peeps!
Lynn Shelton passed away earlier this month at age 54. We discuss some of her biggest achievements and legacy in Hollywood.
American independent film lost a guiding light this month with the sudden passing of Lynn Shelton. From 2006 to 2019, Shelton created a multi-film roadmap for considering the dimensionality of place (often Seattle) and deep personal meaning from simple conversation. This week, Be Reel looks back at "We Go Way Back" (2006), "Humpday" (2009), "Your Sister's Sister" (2011), "Laggies" (2014) and "Sword of Trust" (2019) to celebrate an aspirational career, cut tragically short. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message

We were so sad to hear of the passing of beloved filmmaker and director, Lynn Shelton. We wanted to honor her memory by re-airing her episode in which we discussed her recent film Sword of Trust. Lynn was deeply loved in the film community (and beyond) and known for both her own films and her extensive TV directing resume. Her films include We Go Way Back, My Effortless Brilliance, Humpday, Your Sister's Sister, Touchy Feely, Laggies, Outside In, and Sword of Trust. She had also directed episodes for The Good Place, GLOW, New Girl, The Mindy Project, Casual, Fresh Off The Boat, Mad Men, and most recently, Little Fires Everywhere. In our interview, we were especially struck by her journey of becoming a filmmaker later in life, in addition to the joy of collaboration she felt with Marc Maron. We are so grateful we had the chance to talk with her. She will be so deeply missed.
Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today we celebrate a modern-day star with a penchant for the past: the one & only Keira Knightley! Dan and Conor are joined by writer, comedian, podcaster, and friend Joel Arnold, of Ineffable! A Cats Movie Podcast & DnDnDPod. The four Keira B-Sides we discuss include Domino, The Duchess, Never Let Me Go, and last year's immediate wartime B-Side The Aftermath. We also mention Lynn Shelton's Laggies and Lorene Scafaria's Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. We gush over how great Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go is, dish on the real-life history behind The Duchess and talk through the narrative choices made in The Aftermath. As for Domino, well, that's a whole other thing. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Our love of Sam Rockwell and hatred of Pete Davidson lead us to the obvious podcast pairing of the two previous Sundance Film Festival darlings in LAGGIES and BIG TIME ADOLESCENCE. And while we are just one of the millions covering these films this week on movie podcasts as opposed to something more off-topic like OUTBREAK or CONTAGION, the reactions we have to this particular double feature produced some scary reactions. Is Pete Davidson a ghoul? Almost certainly. But was he in a better movie than America's sweetheart Sam Rockwell? The world would end. With that in mind pay us for this podcast at Patreon! Ben discusses growing up in Saranac Lake in far upstate New York, the video store and the boarding school that shaped his early tastes, studying film at Ithaca College, beginning his career as a negative cutter in Seattle and connecting with directors Lynn Shelton and Guy Maddin, with whom he'd go on to work frequently. He also talks about the best advice he ever got, the challenges and opportunities in shooting low-budget movies and what the collaborative process is like with a director. And now Ben has made his own feature directing debut, the hilarious and sweet "Banana Split," coming out this spring. Listen and enjoy!

We talk Arrested Development on film, and unlike the nerds who still want to talk about that cancelled comedy (which sucked when it finally did come back), we instead talk about the stunning movie stars Charlize Theron and Jason Segal. In YOUNG ADULT, Theron does her version of MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING without the best friend, and the fact that the wedding she is going to break up has already happened. Segal plays a much more likable man child, albeit one who needs to do some simple home repairs for his mother who has allowed him to stay in the nest in JEFF, WHO LIVES AT HOME. But first, Keira Knightley leaves her comfortable nest she shares with her high school boyfriend, running away from a marriage proposal to go hang out with some high school kids and a turtle with an eating disorder in LAGGIES.
Matthew Socey reviews INTERSTELLAR, BIG HERO 6 and LAGGIES. He also replays his chat with Aarti Sequeira.
It's a haunted Halloween Movie Date with a wide range of creepy options, from an amnesia suspense flick to a sociopath-centered thriller. Nicole Kidman wakes up confused about who she is and where she is every single day in "Before I Go to Sleep." Jake Gyllenhaal is willing to cross the line as he chases down ambulances in "Nightcrawler." And Keira Knightly hangs out with kids half her age, and sleeps with a man twice her age in "Laggies." The strangeness continues in this week's Sweatpants conversation. Frances McDormand plays a peculiar Mainer in "Olive Kitteridge" (on HBO, beginning November 2, 2014) and a cartoon Mike Tyson solves mysteries on "Mike Tyson Mysteries" (premiere was this week on Adult Swim). There's also some angry listener mail this week. And, as always, there's trivia!
