Erik Childress has been traveling to Austin for over 20 years for the annual South by Southwest Film Festival. He is back to tell you all about 19 films that he saw this year. Among the films you can see soon are the return of Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively to the world of simple favor. Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega trying to survive the revenge of a unicorn and Nicolas Cage battles some territorial Australians. Hopefully audiences won't have to wait too long to see the solo directorial debut of Jay Duplass or the latest from Matt Johnson that pays homage to the world of Robert Zemeckis and Rosamund Pike & Matthew Rhys desperately try to get to the scene of their daughter's accident, Daisy Ridley has to dodge zombies and a pair of brothers take a leisurely stroll through San Francisco with their guitars in a single take. There are documentaries about Curtis Mayfield, Marc Maron, the horrors and fascism in the wake of the Uvalde school shooting and what to do when an A.I. Pioneer won't answer your questions. Erik reviews all that plus Michael Bay's parkour documentary in this recap of one of his favorite festivals.   0:00 – Intro 2:02 – Another Simple Favor 5:08 – Hallow Road 8:27 – Brother Verses Brother 11:19 – The Dutchman 14:03 – Death of a Unicorn 18:51 – American Sweatshop 22:18 – Uvalde Mom 25:22 – Forge 28:10 – We Bury the Dead 31:25 – Nirvanna the Band the Show – The Movie 35:59 – Deepfaking Sam Altman 39:40 – The Baltimorons 45:02 – For Worse 49:21 – The Surfer 53:14 – The Makings of Curtis Mayfield 54:27 – Make It Look Real 57:07 – Caper 59:50 – We Are Storror 1:03:59 – Are We Good? 1:07:02 - Outro

Creative expression is more than a trending concept; it fosters the resilience needed to navigate the unpredictable paths of success. The idea of 'failing fast' and learning from trial and error is essential. In a culture where instant gratification is prevalent, the research underscores the value of persistent effort. Studies show that individuals with high levels of grit are more likely to achieve long-term success. Grit combines passion and perseverance, allowing people to pursue their goals with sustained effort. Those who display grit often find greater engagement and meaning in their work. So, how does one stay motivated through the countless, imperfect first drafts and prototypes that ultimately lead to success? In this episode of Tuesdays with Morrisey, host Adam Morrisey sits down with filmmaker Michael Litwak and tech entrepreneur David Litwak to discuss the parallels between artistic and entrepreneurial journeys, touching on grit, the iterative process, and the discipline it takes to excel. Through their conversation, they explore what it means to sustain passion and purpose through the ups and downs of building creative careers in different arenas.Top Takeaways:Balancing Passion and Creative Expression: The Litwak brothers discuss the impact of their parents' encouragement to explore creative outlets and how an early interest in the arts and entrepreneurship helped them blend creativity with financial stability.Creative Grit and Growth: Michael emphasizes persistence in creative work, noting that success often follows multiple attempts. David adds that resilience is essential not only in the arts but also in entrepreneurship.Modern Social Structures: David's work with Maxwell Social Club addresses shifting social dynamics by creating a space centered on connection and belonging, with principles like curation and contribution.Entrepreneurship as Art: Both brothers agree that entrepreneurship parallels creative pursuits. David views creating a social club as akin to crafting a work of art, demanding vision, attention to detail, and adaptability.Key Takeaways:How environment and upbringing shape creative expressionThe role of grit in both artistic and entrepreneurial journeysThe evolution of social spaces in an increasingly disconnected worldEntrepreneurship and filmmaking as expressions of self and problem-solvingMichael Litwak is an acclaimed Brooklyn-based filmmaker with over four years of directing experience at Wild / Factory. His recent feature, Molly and Max in the Future, premiered at the 2023 South by Southwest Film Festival, earning a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Known for his innovative storytelling, Litwak has built a strong reputation through both freelance and studio work.David Litwak is a seasoned entrepreneur known for founding Maxwell Social, a social club redefining communal spaces in New York's Tribeca. He also co-founded Mozio, a leader in urban mobility solutions, collaborating with major travel brands like Hertz, Air France, and Booking.com. An advisor and investor in numerous tech startups, David combines his community-building and mobility expertise with a focus on innovation and strategic growth in the travel industry.

Raiders of the Podcast

This week- two trips into unfamiliar territory in vans that become crime scenes.     When Dean, Duncan, DJ Beatroot, and Ian are dropped off along the road to hike through the highlands for a the Duke of Edinburgh Award, they never dreamed they would be hunted by an older couple wearing masks. Soon the boys are in a desperate fight for their lives with only their limited wits and local fauna excrement to save them. Meanwhile, Sargent Morag hunts a notorious thief. A darling of the 2019 South by Southwest Film Festival and debut feature of writer/director Ninian Doff- Get Duked! (aka Boyz in the Wood).     It's 1974, for some reason, and a van full of kids are driving through remote and empty backroads they are totally unfamiliar with on their way to see Lynyrd Skynyrd, with front row seats. They decide to pick up a second female wondering the side of the road, probably hoping she will be as friendly as the first one was. Unfortunately, the new pick up is severely traumatized and our leads are too damn thick to not get themselves killed. The first film from Platinum Dunes, the feature debut of prolific music video director Marcus Nispel, and a remake of Craig's favorite horror movie- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003).     All that and Kevin shouts from the void, Dave eats pizza, Tyler builds a nu metal instrument, and Craig has a existential crisis. Join us, won't we?  Episode 321- Beatroot, Texas

This is the second episode in the WGA inspired mini-season. A break from the usual "Directors on Directing," this season is focused on the nuts and bolts of screenwriting. The second episode features BRADLEY JACKSON, another co-writer on my debut feature, STAGES. Bradley also co-wrote my short film, THE HEIGHTS. But, once again, these two projects are just one of many other credits under Bradley's belt. His first produced screenplay, INTRAMURAL, a comedy about Intramural football, starred Kate McKinnon (SNL), Jake Lacy (The White Lotus) and Beck Bennett (SNL).  Just prior to the strike, Bradley had just finished setting up his script GYM RAT - a gritty basketball drama - with A24 and Oscar winning director Ezra Edelman, in addition to writing an original feature for Bill Simmons and Spotify.  Bradley is also a talented documentary director and producer. His directorial debut, FACING NOLAN - about the legendary Major League pitcher and Texas legend Nolan Ryan - premiered at SXSW 2022 to rave reviews and then premiered on Netflix.   Other credits include writing and producing the feature documentary DEALT which won the Audience Award at the 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival and producing the 4 part docu-series for Showtime and Boardwalk Pictures called ACTION - about the legalization of sports gambling in America.  His current project is writing/producing the Milli Vanilli documentary for MRC that was bought by Paramount+ and will be released in late 2023. During this conversation, we spoke about revealing character through comedy, the third draft "subtext" transition, and how a co-writer can help wade through determining if the pages you're writing are actually good.

This week Drusilla and Josh cover the 2016 micro-budget horror film, The Alchemist Cookbook. Josh is sick, being lazy is anti-capitalist, How to Do Nothing, They talk a long time about SCREIVI or SCREAM 6. From wiki: “The Alchemist Cookbook is a horror film directed by Joel Potrykus. The film was released on the 7th of October 2016 in New York City. The film stars Ty Hickson as "Sean" and Amari Cheatom as "Cortez". The film was produced by Oscilloscope Laboratories and by producers Andrew D. Corkin, Bryan Reisberg and Ashley Young.[1] "Sean" is an outcast who isolates himself from society to practice alchemy, accompanied by only his cat. As his mental condition deteriorates the line of what is real and what is not becomes blurred, and as his chemistry turns to black magic, he instead summons a demon.[1] The film breaks the conventional boundaries of genre, as elements of a black comedy, horror and a psychological thriller are all incorporated and intertwined.[2] The Alchemist cookbook was released on an alternate release strategy, as a pay what you want film, in both theatres and on BitTorrent bundle.[2] The film was an official selection at the 2016 South by Southwest Film Festival.[1]”  NEXT WEEK: Don't Deliver Us From Evil (1972) Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.com  Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.com         Drusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/  Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/  Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/         Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/  Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkel   Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/  Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel

He talked with Meghan about why he's so controversial, what it's been like to spend decades on masculinizing hormone therapy, and why he's worried about the number of clinicians now prescribing such therapies to young people after minimal psychological counseling.    For the record: at one point in the interview Buck mistakenly referred to the biotech entrepreneur Martine Rothblatt as Martine Rathbaum. He also suggested that Rothblatt, who is the founder of the biotech company United Therapeutics, is among the billionaire class. As of March 2021, United Therapeutics was reportedly worth $7.1 billion. Rothblatt herself, according to Forbes, is worth $390 million.     Guest Bio: Buck Angel is an entrepreneur and educator in the area of trans male healthcare and sexual wellness. This week on Special Edition of Sean at the Movies, I attended screenings at the Virtual South by Southwest Film Festival. I had the chance to talk with artists and actors from the buzziest titles at one of the most prestigious festivals in the country. In this episode Kelly Kali and Deon Cole discuss, in separate interviews, the much loved festival hit "I'm Fine Thanks for Asking." Phillip Gelatt and Galen Morgan King are bringing back the genre of Fantasy Animated Adventure for adults with the new animated epic The Spine of Night featuring the voices of Patton Oswalt, Joe Manganiello, Lucy Lawless and Richard E Grant. TV is also in the spotlight at SXSW as the Canada short form series For the Record is at SXSW hoping to find an American home for it's music based exploration of life and love and relationships. And finally, one of my favorite movies to come from SXSW is one I actually saw as part of the Miami Film Festival but took the chance to see again at SXSW. It's called Ludi and it's the deeply empathetic story of a Haitian immigrant working, scrimping and saving to care for her family back in Haiti. The film is wonderful sad but also absurd with a strange and poignant sense of humor. I adore this movie.

Social media is one of the biggest definers of our generation. Whether we mean it to or not, social media shifts our view of the world, and our view of the relationships we have with others and with ourselves. This week, as we continue our conversation series on body image, it’s important to consider the role that social media plays in how we see ourselves, how we see others, and how we view our bodies. Today, we have three awesome guests to help us unpack this topic.  Iman Hariri-Kia is an Iranian-American, New York-based writer, editor, and musician. Iman was the 2017 recipient of the Annabelle Bonner Medal and is now a nationally acclaimed journalist. Iman serves as the Sex & Relationships editor of Bustle and has had several pieces published in Man Repeller, Teen Vogue, Bustle, and The Huffington Post.  Her writing explores various topics including sex, dating, relationships, singledom, sexuality, gender identity, sexual health, and consent. She’s also appeared as a speaker, panelist, and performer on the TODAY Show, DailyMailTV, NY1 News, and more. Iman’s journey with disordered eating and the usage of detox teas lead her now to advocacy work surrounding the banning of the promotion of these harmful, yet well-marketed products. Be sure to follow Iman on Instagram, check out her writing across multiple platforms, and be on the lookout for her latest articles.   Jonathan Ignatius Green is a writer, director, and partner at the content agency Conscious Minds. After years of first-hand experience with the rise of influencer culture, Green set out to create the documentary, Social Animals, which focuses on the unforgivable nature of social media in following the lives of three teenagers. The film first debuted at the South by Southwest Film Festival in 2018 and is now on Netflix for public viewing. The storyline focuses on three individuals: Kaylyn Slevin, the daughter of wealthy socialites, who has built an Instagram influencer career by showcasing her beach lifestyle; Humza Deas, an urban photographer who, quite literally, climbs to the top for the best shots; and typical teen from Ohio Emma Crockett. All three are burnt – to a greater or lesser extent – by social media’s dark side. Ultimately Green aimed to utilize the documentary as a platform for the teens to vulnerably share their experiences with social media as well as to build empathy for his subjects. Be sure to follow Jonathan on Instagram and Twitter for the latest updates on his upcoming projects.  Rebecca Scritchfield is a registered dietician nutritionist and certified exercise physiologist. She is the creator of the The Body Kindness philosophy, which has become a podcast called Body Kindness, as well as a book called Body Kindness: Transform your health from the inside out and never say diet againnow on sale at most major retailers. Rebecca is on a mission to help people reject diets and body shaming and help people achieve better lives with workable self-care goals that fit their needs and preferences, not society’s unrealistic weight and beauty standards that are constantly being pushed through mainstream media. Rebecca has a private practice based in D.C., where she sees clients virtually and in person. Be sure to like her page on Facebook, follow her on Instagram and Twitter, and subscribe to her YouTube channel. Lastly, Rebecca has a free Facebook group called Body Kindness insiders and has a free mini course that you can take right now to get started on your body kindness journey. I first came across Richard Turner (richardturner52.com, youtube.com/richardturner52) in the documentary Dealt, directed by Luke Korem.I can't remember the last time I finished a documentary, only to want to watch it again immediately afterward. I also can't remember a doc that made me as emotional as Dealt did, pushing me from laughter to tears. It has 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and won the 2017 Documentary Feature Audience Choice Award at the South by Southwest Film Festival. Everyone should watch it.But back to my guest: Richard Turner is regarded as the best card mechanic and among the best up-close magicians in the world. He has entertained millions of people, including notables like Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Secretary of State Colin Powell, actor Brad Pitt, sports legend Muhammad Ali, and many more. His skill with a deck of cards has been featured on television shows around the world, including a performance on Penn & Teller: Fool Us, in which Penn Jillette admitted, "Richard Turner is one of the finest sleight-of-hand artists who has ever lived. He fooled us with every single move he did!"Note: Toward the end of the interview, you will hear Richard performing card tricks. He did them in front of me, and he absolutely blew my mind. This discovery sparked sensational headlines nationwide, leading to a trial that raised difficult questions about technology, social media and mental health, while asking if one person can be held responsible for the suicide of another. In 2012, teens Michelle Carter and Conrad Roy fell in love. They lived hours apart and met in person no more than five times, but exchanged thousands of texts over a two-year period. After Roy was found dead in his car in July 2014, what appeared to be a standard case of suicide by carbon-monoxide intoxication took a shocking turn when investigators discovered alarming text messages on his phone. Carter, 17 at the time, had urged Roy to kill himself, even after he had second thoughts and removed himself from his car.  Directed by Erin Lee Carr (HBO’s At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal and Mommy Dead and Dearest) I Love You, Now Die explores the complicated relationship between Carter and Roy, drawing on some of the thousands of texts they exchanged over two years to chronicle their courtship and its tragic consequences. Featuring unprecedented access to the families, friends and communities that were forever changed by this unusual case, the documentary explores the changing nature of the justice system today, following a story that has wider implications for society at large, both online and in real life. The film presents a well-rounded look at a bizarre tale that was a deadly convergence of mental illness, loneliness, pop culture and technology. In July 2017, Michelle Carter was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the suicide of Roy. In August 2017, she was found guilty and began her 15-month prison sentence in February 2019, following a failed appeal. I Love You, Now Die includes footage from Michelle Carter’s trial, where the filmmakers had the only camera allowed in court and supplied the pool camera for this historic case. It also features interviews with key individuals in the story, including: Conrad Roy’s immediate family; Joseph Cataldo, Michelle Carter’s defense attorney; Dr. Peter Breggin, an expert witness for the defense; police detectives; and journalists who covered the case extensively. The documentary premiered at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival. I Love You, Now Die is directed and produced by Erin Lee Carr; produced by Andrew Rossi; co-producer, Alison Byrne; original music, Ian Hultquist; cinematographer, Bryan Sarkinen; editor, Andrew Coffman; executive producer, Sheila Nevins; senior producer, Sara Bernstein.

That film, The Disaster Artist, depicts the wild production of the "Citizen Kane of Bad Movies" known as The Room by focusing on the friendship between the film's director Tommy Weiseau and second lead actor Greg Sistero (played by James and Dave Franco respectively). During the awards season, Franco's performance as well as the film's overall production were garnered for Oscar contention until controversy saw its fortunes wither. Everything points to marriage, until Lauren suddenly sees a lifetime of “just fine” yawning ahead of her, and it immediately makes her hungry for a better, fuller future. Director Stella Meghie has had quite a year. In 2016 her debut film ‘Jean of the Joneses’ premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival to rave reviews, and just over twelve months later she had her first big financial hit with with the studio film ‘Everything, Everything’. It’s an impressive trajectory for any young director, but when you consider how grossly underrepresented black women filmmakers are in Hollywood, Stella’s ascent seems even more significant. In fact, Stella is the only black woman with a wide-release movie in 2017, a shocking stat that speaks volumes about Hollywood’s diversity problem. Stella sits down with Rob and Geoff to discuss how she went from indie darling to studio director in just over a year (3:25), the challenges that come working within the studio system (5:30), and why, despite her recent mainstream success, she’s excited to go back to telling more personal stories (6:45). She also explains why women filmmakers have more trouble making the leap to studio films than their male peers (12:00), the consequences of diverse audience members not seeing themselves represented onscreen (17:25) and why she’s not happy with the distinction of being the only black woman with a wide release film in 2017 (18:30). It is safe to say she is one of the most successful women in the biz right now. Lena Dunham is a Golden Globe winner, best known for writing, directing, producing and acting in Girls HBO. Her first big break was in 2010, when her film Tiny Furniture and won the South by Southwest Film Festival's best narrative feature award. In 2014 she released her book Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's Learned which went on to be a New York Times Bestseller (no surprises there.) In 2015 she founded the online feminist Lenny Letter with her creative partner Jenni Konner. They have an advertising partnership with Hearst and they now have their own imprint at Penguin Random House. Her podcast Women of the Hour is also one of my favourites which you should definitely go and listen to.   This interview has a spoiler level of “Mirror Image”. SCOTT BAKULA has been recognized for his work in a variety of mediums, from feature films to television to musical theatre and more. Bakula is now starring as the lead agent for “NCIS: New Orleans.” As ‘NCIS Special Agent Pride,' Bakula's character is described as “the embodiment of New Orleans, a unique federal agent working in one of the country's most unique cities. He's driven by the need to do what's right, and he does it all with warmth, passion, strength and humor.' The “NCIS” spin-off is executive produced by Gary Glasberg and Mark Harmon. CCH Pounder, Lucas Black, and Zoe McLellan have also joined the New Orleans team. Bakula was recently nominated for an Emmy for his supporting role in the award-winning HBO Films Liberace biopic BEHIND THE CANDELABRA. Bakula reteamed with his THE INFORMANT! co-star Matt Damon and director Steven Soderbergh in the film that features Michael Douglas starring as the famed performer, and Damon as ‘Scott Thorson,' his young live-in lover. His fifth nomination (the previous four were for his work in “Quantum Leap”) was for Bakula's portrayal of ‘Bob Black,' the choreographer who introduced Liberace to Thorson. The film also enjoyed many nominations and several wins at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Currently, Bakula is starring in the new HBO dramedy “Looking” from creator/writer/executive producer Michael Lannan. In the series about three 30-something friends living in San Francisco grappling with the modern gay experience, Bakula recurs as ‘Lynn,' an attractive entrepreneur and pillar of the Castro community who befriends one of the series leads. HuffPost TV praised Bakula's performance, saying: “As he did in ‘Behind the Candelabra,' SCOTT BAKULA steals every scene he's in. He plays an older gay man who wryly observes the dating and mating habits of the younger generation, and he brought such warmth and depth to the character that one of my main takeaways from ‘Looking' is that BAKULA, who was similarly great in ‘Men of a Certain Age,' should be cast in just about everything. In any event, Bakula's presence and air of experience add weight and depth to the show!” Bakula has several projects in the can. He traveled to India to shoot the musical feature BASMATI BLUES with Brie Larson, Tyne Daly, and Donald Sutherland. He recently wrapped the feature ME HIM HER, the directorial debut from CHRONICLE screenwriter Max Landis. Bakula will play the middle-class Republican father of the film's lead character, a young Hollywood star (Luke Bracey) who comes out as gay in the comedy film about friendship and sexual identity. The movie will also stars Dustin Milligan, Jake McDormand, Emily Meade, and Geena Davis as Bakula's wife. Bakula also shot the indie feature ELSA AND FRED starring opposite Christopher Plummer and playing Shirley MacLaine's son ‘Gabriel,' a character described as “Elsa's conservative banker son, a bit stuffy and judgmental, who often argues with her about her spending habits.” The indie feature SNAP, in which Bakula c0-starred opposite Nikki Reed, Thomas Dekker, and Jason Priestley, premiered at the latest South-by-Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Bakula was last seen starring in the critically acclaimed TNT series “Men of a Certain Age,” with Ray Romano and Andre Braugher. The series focused on three best friends since college who are were each experiencing their own form of mid-life crises as they approach 50. Bakula received much buzz from critics and fans alike for his performance as ‘Terry,' a womanizing bachelor who becomes increasingly jaded as a fading actor, and is forced to consider beginning a “real career.” In between his many film projects Bakula was also seen guesting on “Law & Order: SVU” and recurred on the final episodes of “Desperate Housewives” as a love interest to Marcia Cross' character, through its finale.
