Even though The Blair Witch Project didn't invent the genre, it's probably the best-known and the biggest hit of all the found footage movies. The online marketing campaign was especially revolutionary. It's a shame that Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez never hit these heights again as writers or directors, but they got so much mileage out of their made-up story, considering it was mostly improvised by the then-unknown Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams. The unresolved mystery takes a lot of heat for its ambiguity, yet Ryan's one-man show talks about how haunting the whole thing still feels 25 years later. This 621st edition of Have You Ever Seen also talks a lot about who or what might have caused these 3 to disappear. So face the wall on this penultimate day of both October and of Scary Movie Month as this episode tries to figure out the horrific deal in The Blair Witch Project. Additional note: both the fake documentary "The Curse Of The Blair Witch" and the 2016 "Blair Witch" have been rewatched since recording this podcast. The "doc" is indeed very effective and even quite eerie. And while the 2016 sequel has its moments, Adam Wingard is WAY too reliant on jump scares and loud shock moments to bother building the dread the original Blair Witch did. In July of 1999 they were a crucial part of a film that lit up the box office, challenged the rules of conventional story telling, and impacted culture all over the world. 25 years later their true story is told. THE MOVIE CRYPT's special roundtable series continues with this fascinating, heartbreaking, and inspiring conversation with actors Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams from THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT - one of the most profitable indie films ever made. Though this roundtable was originally being developed to discuss the taboo subject of “Hollywood Accounting,” the focus sharpened after Adam Green found himself at a front row seat to a very candid, honest and private conversation between the BLAIR WITCH cast and co-director Eduardo Sanchez last March in Cincinnati. Shortly after that night, actor Joshua Leonard came to the decision to speak up publicly on social media for the first time about what the experience of being such a significant part of THE BLAIR WITCH phenomenon has REALLY been like. For 11+ years of doing this weekly podcast you've likely heard the phrase “unless your film makes BLAIR WITCH money you'll never see the backend that you've earned” at least a dozen times or more. This conversation shatters that myth and peels back the curtain on a system that is in need of more transparency and fairness. As with all of our special roundtable episodes, this episode is being released publicly in its entirety. PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Dave Parker (THE HILLS RUN RED, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, PUPPET MASTER: DOKTOR DEATH, IT WATCHES) returns to THE MOVIE CRYPT to discuss the making of his latest film YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE LET ME IN (now playing on Tubi). From the whirlwind process of being hired to direct the project and immediately shipping off to Italy… to the supposedly “haunted” villa that much of the film was shot in and filming in a real underground tomb… to the challenges and the joys of helming a film as a “work for hire” while still finding ways to creatively make it your own… to the secrets for winning over a new crew… to returning to work with the great Charlie Band and directing PUPPET MASTER: DOKTOR DEATH (2022)… to how to stretch a production's extremely limited resources to create the best possible film… to why editing experience can be so crucial to directing… Dave's experiences from the last several years are an inspiring lesson on how to hang in there when it feels like things aren't going the way you want it to and just how quickly the tide can change. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a filmmaker who is working crew jobs while looking to prepare for the moment when he steps into the director's chair, Dave dishes on the food in Italy, and the group nerds out on the 2024 Oscars and the movies they've been digging. This week, we present the most recent episode of John's other show, 1999: The Podcast, which features a conversation with American Hysteria's Chelsey Weber-Smith about The Blair Witch Project. Starring Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard as themselves – or people who happen to have their exact names – and written and directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, 1999's 10th-highest grossing film, The Blair Witch Project was produced on a budget of less than a half million dollars and grossed $248.6 million at the box office. One of the founding films in the "found footage" genre, the film was perhaps most famous for the unprecedented marketing campaign that led up to its release. The movie made innovative use of a relatively novel outlet called "the World Wide Web" and deliberately blurred the lines between fact and fiction, giving the film an air of reality that actually fooled some its audience into believing they were watching real documentary footage. Heralded by critics for its ingenuity as well as its genuine scares, Blair Witch may well have been the buzziest of buzzy movies ever. But its legacy is slightly more complicated. While it was a huge hit with the public at the time, it is less liked by audiences now, who often complain that the movie doesn't hold up on its own, having relied too much on the multimedia "project" of which the film is merely the final ingredient. 1999: The Podcast on Twitter: @1999thePodcast Chelsey on Twitter: @AmerHysteria

We even found some footage of our own! A tape featuring Mint Salad and Riley was discovered in the woods! “Teeth,” “Somebody Up There Likes Me,” “Chained For Life,” “The Good Wife,” are just a few of the great Jess Weixler's credits. Ten years ago she co-stared in “The Lie” with Joshua Leonard. They played a couple with a baby and one big problem. He directed. Most of the dialogue came out of improvisation. Now they've done it again with “Fully Realized Humans.” They again play a couple. This time the baby is in utero and the laughs are bigger, the situations more absurd yet also more thought-provoking. Weixler is credited as co-writer. In this episode she details the improv method they used to build the dialogue out of the circumstances in the scene. We try to figure out what Leonard meant by “the phantom leg of naturalism,” and she talks about what it was like to film this indie comedy while 8 months pregnant, including one moment of empowerment prompted from an unlikely source.
