Cape May Lighthouse, New Jersey. USLHS photo by James Hill. Cape May Lighthouse stands at the southern tip of the state of New Jersey, on the north side of the entrance to Delaware Bay. The first lighthouse on the site was built in 1823, and the second in 1847. The locations of the first two lighthouses are now underwater. The extant 157-foot brick lighthouse began service in 1859. The property is owned by the State of New Jersey and leased to the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities, known as MAC. The organization raises funds for preservation and opens the lighthouse to the public. Our guest today, Ben Ridings, is the curator for Cape May MAC. Ben Ridings Also in this episode is a report from Judianne Point on news from lighthouses in southern New England. Judianne is the first vice president of the American Lighthouse Foundation and an award-winning volunteer for Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse.

A recent report about climate change raised a lot of alarm bells about how bad the situation really is. It's called the IPCC report, it's very long and dense but the link is below. We wanted to break down the report, get the biggest bullet points, and find out how much trouble we're actually in and if there's anything we can do or any bright spots, so we called Dr. Ruth McDermott-Levy, Professor at the Fitzpatrick College of Nursing at Villanova and Co-Director of the Mid-Atlantic Center for Children's Health and the Environment. Consistent with past practice, Urban Areas began a collaborative process to establish All-Hazards Incident Management Teams (AHIMT) . Today we are taking a deep dive into the AHIMT process and seeks to identify challenges and obstacles to collaboration with FDNY BC Rich DePrima. There is minimal agreement about how much collaboration has taken place in developing the AHIMT programs. The benefits of collaboration are believed to include the sharing of resources, developing positive relationships with other agencies, reducing operational costs, and providing a common framework for identifying and solving problems. These findings support the following recommendations for using collaboration in regional initiatives: an overall program strategy document that addresses the need for and commitment to collaboration, governance, personnel, competency, remaining relevant, and an exercise schedule.LinksWeb - https://www.ahimta.org/Twitter - https://twitter.com/fdnyimt?lang=enFacebook -https://www.facebook.com/.../today-the.../572038263528723/LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-deprima-072668162/Todd De VoeWebsite - https://toddtdevoe.com/Website- www.crisis-cafe.comSpeak N Spark-https://bit.ly/3sTVUfrLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3sVHL1gEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdSister ShowsEM Student Web -https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdThe Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGSponsors Outer Limit Supply https://bit.ly/2FR26Bp Coupon Code “EMWEEKLY” Power Up- https://www.powerupconnect.com/Mid-Atlantic Center for Emergency Management- https://macem.org/Home.aspx

With remote work more popular than ever, it's important to consider the unique ways that emergencies and disasters may affect these employees. Employees who work from home should be sure to have a plan to deal with common emergencies and disasters. Technology can also help when it comes to emergency preparedness by enabling employees to connect to the internet, access important files and documents, and maintain a clear line of communication. Remote work during an emergency or disaster will indeed be much different than remote work during normal times — there may be additional challenges and stressors that require different solutions than normal. In the aftermath of a disaster, it's important to be flexible, understanding, and take your employees' needs into account.Rodrigo Nieto GómezWeb -https://nps.edu/web/nsa/faculty/-/asset_publisher/eHb4tK5KXorI/content/rodtrigo-nieto-gomez-ph-d-Twitter - https://twitter.com/rodrigonietoFacebook -https://www.facebook.com/rodrigonietogomezLinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/in/rodrigonietogomez/YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC04pcvAgqE5xh8X6lOIC3zATodd De VoeWebsite - https://toddtdevoe.com/Website- www.crisis-cafe.comSpeak N Spark-https://bit.ly/3sTVUfrLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3sVHL1gEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdSister ShowsEM Student Web -https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdThe Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGSponsors Outer Limit Supply https://bit.ly/2FR26Bp Coupon Code “EMWEEKLY” Power Up- https://www.powerupconnect.com/Mid-Atlantic Center for Emergency Management- https://macem.org/Home.aspxIf you would like to become a sponsor or advertiser Call Sitch Radio (714) 643-2500 X 1

The 46th Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop will be organized around the theme of The Hazards and Disaster Workforce: Preparing to Meet 21st Century Challenges. Our ability to reduce disaster risk has always depended on the people who do the work. This includes leaders who set a vision for a more just and sustainable future, researchers who push the boundaries of discovery, and practitioners who help prepare communities for a range of threats. As climate change accelerates and disaster losses mount, our future depends on fostering a well-trained workforce with strong adaptive capacity. At present, however, it is not clear that we have the people, resources, or institutional structures necessary to address the social roots of risk that turn natural hazards into human catastrophes. This focus on the current status of our field and the future of work is urgent.Conversations at this year's Workshop will center around how the workforce we have can support and build the workforce we need. How does the size and composition of the hazards and disaster workforce shape the ability to respond to and recover from extreme events? What sort of mentoring and skill building do researchers, practitioners, and volunteer responders need? What jobs have become obsolete and which need to be filled or created? How can we meet the escalating risks and inequalities of today, while still investing in programs and policies that will reduce future hazards losses? These are just some of the questions we will pursue as we highlight efforts aimed at cultivating a demographically diverse and highly skilled workforce. We will also explore societal transitions that shape labor demands and carefully consider what gaps exist in hazards workforce development, education, and training. As we take stock of who we are and how we approach our work, we will chart a strategy for the future that ensures we are ready to rise together to meet 21st century challenges. As always, we strive to build a rich program that includes many different perspectives and plenty of opportunities for engagement. We are excited to learn from you as we chart this path together.Natural Hazard CenterWeb - https://hazards.colorado.edu/workshop/2021/themeTwitter - https://twitter.com/HazCenterFacebook -https://www.facebook.com/hazcenterYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGAwcjY0T0XHz0CmlFKGuQwTodd De VoeWebsite - https://toddtdevoe.com/Website- www.crisis-cafe.comSpeak N Spark-https://bit.ly/3sTVUfrLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3sVHL1gEM WeeklyWebsite - https://bit.ly/3jj5ItlTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdSister ShowsEM Student Web -https://bit.ly/2Hw0sFxTwitter - https://bit.ly/31z8MeXFacebook - https://bit.ly/3dMlbRPLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/2FQDhWdThe Business Continuity ShowTwitter - https://bit.ly/3ojEIO2Facebook - https://bit.ly/2Tjqv5HLinkedIn - https://bit.ly/34mXyfzYouTube - https://bit.ly/3mePJyGSponsors Outer Limit Supply https://bit.ly/2FR26Bp Coupon Code “EMWEEKLY” Power Up- https://www.powerupconnect.com/Mid-Atlantic Center for Emergency Management- https://macem.org/Home.aspxIf you would like to become a sponsor or advertiser Call Sitch Radio (714) 643-2500 X 1

Practical Application of Incident Command, Should It Be Overhauled?

The full organization of the ICS structure is large. However, the full organization is rarely implemented. The organization can expand and contract depending on how many people are needed at any given moment. In a large crisis, the whole structure could be implemented, but in a smaller incident, only one, two, or three of these positions might be filled. One person can fill more than one role. The rule of thumb is that every role that is left vacant is filled by the role above it. Private Sector Emergency Management How They Enhance The Profession

The changing scope and scale of disasters, both natural and technological, have altered the ways in which disaster management and financing are addressed and the roles of private-sector organizations specifically. Businesses and nonprofit organizations are increasingly central to the process, offering critical support in immediate disaster response but also contributing necessary redevelopment funding that supports community recovery. Although these new expectations position the private sector as a key leader in community resilience, these responsibilities have not been fully met with established guidance or clear metrics for how and when these organizations should participate in disaster recovery and financing. This perspective examines key issues confronting the private sector in disaster recovery financing, what roles private-sector entities have played, and where there has been successful integration or leadership of these organizations. The perspective also briefly explores challenges that the private sector faces, with particular attention to issues of information use and application, coordination in response and recovery, and timing of funding. While working overseas with Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron Two (VQ-2) during the Bosnian War, Miller began suffering crippling attacks that military doctors were unable to explain. Miller was transported back to America and based on his exemplary record, he was awarded an early Honorable Discharge. It was later determined by a team of doctors with the Department of Veterans Affairs that Miller suffered from Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia and PTSD, which were both deemed service-connected. Miller elected to pursue a college degree at Lock Haven University, where he also joined the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity. He graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and a Minor in Journalism. It would be four more years and a series of personal tragedies, before Miller began his literary career as a columnist with Exit Zero, a weekly magazine based in Cape May, NJ. His initial writings were primarily historical in nature, though he also penned the occasional feature story and editorial. In 2008, Miller set his sights on a higher goal, when he created 'Donate My Weight', a campaign to use weight loss as a means to raise donations for food banks across America. He appeared on NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX news segments all over the country, along with a series of radio interviews and appearances on the 10! Show, Good Day Philadelphia and the Rachael Ray Show. In July of 2009, Exit Zero Publishing released Miller's first book, The First Resort, a hardcover coffee table book that profiles America's first resort town, Cape May, NJ. The book features 300 full-color pages and details the city's history from 1609 to 2009, accentuated with over 500 pictures. The First Resort has been well received by critics, historians and fans of Cape May from around the world, selling out of its initial printing after only a few months. The Philadelphia Inquirer named it one of the 'Top 10 Coffee Table Books of 2009'. Miller’s second book, In the Land of Exit Zero, was released in 2011. It’s a children’s book focusing on Cape May’s history and all the book’s illustrations are original oil paintings that were commissioned by the publisher. Cape May Moments is Miller’s third book about the region’s history and is currently being edited by the publisher. As Miller’s disabilities worsened with each passing year, Panic Disorder and PTSD grew into generalized anxiety disorder and depression. Meanwhile, unexpected physical challenges arose, and Miller was diagnosed with severe spinal problems, Meniere's Disease and the autoimmune disorder, Rheumatoid Arthritis. A husband and father of five, Miller continues to push back against his struggles and currently sees several private doctors on a regular basis, along with doctors from the VA. He is “Medically Retired” due to his disabilities and rated 100% disabled by the VA and Social Security. Nonetheless, Miller refuses to acquiesce to his conditions and give up living as productive a life as possible. He is an avid volunteer with fundraising for families in need and non-profit organizations in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania and in Cape May, NJ. Miller has also voluntered his services to curate three critically-acclaimed museum exhibits for the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and is scheduled to open his fourth next Spring. For his volunteerism efforts, Miller has received...
