Life After Addiction And Indictment

Dan Cerrillo is the former Chief Administrative Officer for American Addiction Centers (AAC), where he led ~15 teams that improve the lives of veterans struggling with addiction and PTSD. Prior to his promotion to CAO in 2022, Dan served AAC as the Chief of Staff and Chief Security Officer. In those roles, Dan was instrumental in helping AAC obtain Tricare and Veterans Administration approval, which has enabled the organization to treat 4000+ veterans and support them in returning to normal, productive lives. Dan was an original member of BUD/S Class 194 and served with SEAL Team One as an operator and instructor after graduation. He was later accepted to the Naval Special Warfare Center/ Special Operations instructor staff and received his accreditation as a Master Training Specialist for Advanced Applied Explosives, Diving Supervisor, Diving Maintenance and Range Operations Safety. A decorated Navy SEAL, Dan has been awarded the Bronze Star, Navy Commendation and Navy Achievement Medals – all with combat distinguishing devices – as well as the Purple Heart Medal. Just before Dan was slated to transition into a civilian career in finance, after graduating with a BBA in Finance, he watched the events of 9/11 unfold. Instead of leaving the military, he chose to continue serving his country for the next six years, during which time he deployed with Naval Special Warfare Group One, SEAL Team Seven, and SEAL Team One to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Following a combat injury, Dan medically retired from the SEALs, though he continues to serve in board, advisory, and ambassador capacities for the Navy SEAL Foundation and the Navy SEAL Fund. In 2020, Dan played an instrumental role in creating the Military Wellness Initiative and Navy SEAL Support Alliance, a $30M joint endeavor of multiple strategic partners. Dan has held multiple executive protection specialist and team leader roles at Vulcan, Inc. and Bayshore Global Management which later inspired him to launch Spartan 7, Inc., a company that provides security, adventures, and executive coaching to high-net-worth individuals, families, and corporations across the US. Dan is currently the CEO of Spartan 7, Inc., and in just three years, he has taken the business from a $2500 startup to a valuable brand worth over $50M. Other work experience includes launching three CrossFit Gyms in the greater Seattle area, which were later sold for a substantial profit, and serving as the Chief of Staff and Director of recruiting for Bayshore Global Management's Global Support Division (GSD.ngo), where he created world's first privately funded disaster aid and humanitarian response team – built of staff from Harvard Humanitarian, Stanford Medicine, and former Special Operations Operators – that was deployed to 10+ natural disaster sites and 100+ humanitarian aid sites. Dan also co-founded the Memorial Day “Murph” Challenge, which has raised over $50M in donations for the Michael Murphy Family Foundation through over 1M participants to date. In addition to his BBA, Dan is finishing a Master of Science (MS) degree in Strategic Leadership from the University of Charleston. He is also a Nationally Registered Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (Level B), a credential which he obtained from the University of Utah. Dan and his wife Leilani have been married for over 20 years. They reside outside of Nashville and enjoy traveling to visit their three grown children at every opportunity. In his free time, Dan has coached multiple high school, college, and junior football teams to winning conference, state, and national championship titles. Dan is currently the Head Coach of the Sub Varsity Team, and Varsity Assistant Linebacker Coach of the Nationally Ranked (15) and defending Tennessee State Football Champions Lipscomb Academy.

In this episode, I sit with Stevie Smith, a registered Dietitian from InsideTracker, to talk about all things bloodwork. I partnered with InsideTracker because I realized not all bloodwork is created equal, and InsideTracker met my high standards as they test optimal ranges for our biomarkers. I like the idea of optimal for myself and my clients. Hey, I've got my long-term health goals of no flares for life, and I want to ensure my biomarkers are on point.I tried out InsideTracker on myself and was so taken by the experience that I signed on immediately to offer it to my wonderful clients! Also, tracking bloodwork for my clients was a great way to show how diet alone can make such a significant impact. I also love that InsideTracker has a great app and gives you food options for bringing up your biomarkers. As you know, I am food forward or food first. I have been off supplements for 10 years, and yep, food has been enough despite the rhetoric that our food is depleted of nutrients. Kinda wild, right? He discusses some of the philosophies and methodologies used in the field of psychology and which ones he uses in his practice. Finally, he talks about his practice, spiral2grow Marriage and Family Therapy, and how it has evolved through the years and how it is different from other psychological practices. Michael Pipich has always been interested in the field of psychology. As long as he can remember, he has found people fascinating and always wondered about their personalities, quirks, and the how and why behind their behaviors and interactions with others. He recalls one weekend when his older brother came home from college with a psych 101 book, and he spent the whole weekend looking through his book and admitted that was his first “act of academic nerdiness.” Like his older brother, he applied for admission to Loyola Marymount University and when he got accepted, he declared psychology as his major right away. Michael has been in the field of psychology for over 30 years and has treated patients with a wide range of mental disorders and relationship problems. Michael currently works as a marriage and family therapist at the Colorado Center for Clinical Excellence which has two locations in Colorado (one in Denver and the other in DTC/Greenwood Village). He has been featured on television, radio, and in print media on a variety of topics and has become a national speaker and writer on bipolar disorder. He book, “Owning Bipolar: How Patients and Families Can Take Control of Bipolar Disorder” (Citadel Press, 2018) has become an important book and reference in the field of bipolar treatment. In this podcast interview, Michael opens up about why he wrote the book and recalls his academic and professional journey in hopes that others will benefit from his advice and suggestions regarding selecting psychology graduate schools and programs. Michael also discusses the licensure requirements in the state of California regarding getting your Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) license (which used to be called the Marriage Family Child Care [MFCC] license). He explains that it really starts with the graduate school you select and attend. In his case, the program at California State, Fullerton provided the classes necessary for the MFCC (now LMFT license). Beyond that, he had to accrue over 3,000 plus supervised hours for which any licensed clinician (PhD, LCSW, MD, etc.) could sign off on. Then, he had to pass a written examination and then pass an oral examination. To learn more about his experience getting his LMFT in California, tune in to our discussion around 22 minutes into the podcast interview. Michael enjoys music, playing guitar, and has even dabbled in music composition. He also enjoys the outdoors (hiking, skiing, water sports) and believes staying active is important for a healthy life, especially if you are in a profession where you are helping people. He has been married for 32 years and has two adult children who he really loves and admires. Dr. David T. Susman didn't have to travel too far from his hometown of Tazewell, VA to begin his undergraduate career in psychology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. He originally was going to pursue a career as a medical doctor but soon realized he wasn't as interested in the pre-med courses as he was in the psychology courses so he decided “that would be a more interesting major” for him. In this podcast, I learned that Dr. Susman leads an active and engaged life in the field of psychology and has become a mental health advocate. In addition to his BA in Psychology, he earned two master's degrees and a PhD on his way to become a licensed psychologist in Kentucky. Dr. Susman shares how he returned to his alma mater, University of Kentucky, to become an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology and the Director of the Jesse G. Harris, Jr. Psychological Services Center which is the training clinic for graduate students where he says they “learn to do psychotherapy and psychological assessment.” He works with all of the clinical psychology graduate students through their clinical training at the Harris Psychological Services Center where he has been the Director since 1996. After completing his graduate work and two internships, Dr. Susman began looking for a full-time job. He applied for a position at Eastern State Hospital which is a large public adult psychiatric hospital in Lexington, KY. They hired him and he thought “maybe I'll work here a couple of years and then I'll go out and start my private practice and then ended up working at Eastern State for 24 ½ years.” This is where he was the Founding Director of the Hospital Recovery Mall which is an award-winning recovery and rehabilitation program for adults with serious mental illness and substance misuse. Dr. Susman is currently serving on the APA Board of Directors and is Chair Elect for 2022 of the Council of Leadership Team. He provides an overview of the APA, its Societies and Divisions, as well as an analogy of the APA's “executive branch” and “legislative branch” to better understand APA governance and his dual role. Dr. Susman is a natural teacher as he consistently shares poignant advice to those interested in psychology including what to consider when selecting a psychology graduate program or school, a discussion on the differences between a PsyD and PhD, and some resources and lesser-known groups available to those interested in clinical psychology (e.g., APTC and NAMI). You can hear more about his thoughts on choosing a PsyD or PhD about 8 minutes into our conversation. Dr. Susman also started his own blog at the end of 2014 as “another platform to be able to talk about mental health advocacy and to raise awareness.” In this blog, he shares “Stories of Hope” where there are over 100 interviews, or personal accounts, of people who have gone on their own journeys of recovery. King is best known for her comedic abilities but in her new breakout role playing Leslie, on the Emmy winning HBO series Euphoria opposite Zendaya and Storm Reid, King showcases a much more dramatic side of herself. In this role, King pulls from her early life in the projects of Liberty City watching her mother and uncles battle addiction and triumphantly overcoming. It is from that resolve and resilience that King offers a dramatic perspective and newfound depth in this role. Watching her mother work hard as a postal worker while battling and defeating addiction shaped King’s perseverance. Her passion for performance started at the early age of five years old. Armed with a silly sense of humor, King started reciting cheeky poems by Langston Hughes. After graduating from the University of Florida (Go Gators!) with a degree in Theatre Performance, King went on to hone her comedy improv skills at the Groundlings Improv School. King’s comedy has landed her roles on Kevin Hart’s Guide to Black, 2 Broke Girls and the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, Canada. She's also produced and wrote on the hilarious web series Funny Married Stuff and her podcast King Confessions.  Striving to be more than just an actor, King created Jeli, a technology company that reimagines Hollywood through diversity and inclusion. It’s a platform for people of color to navigate the entertainment industry in a supported way by connecting with industry leaders to develop their personal roadmap to success. Irby’s popular TED Talk "How to inspire every child to be a lifelong reader," has been viewed over 1 million times. Irby’s nationally-recognized cultural competency workshops help school districts, library systems, and education organizations create relevant and engaging learning experiences for all students.  His Diversity & Inclusion trainings have been described as informative, inspiring, engaging, and humorous. Ir by helps educators better understand and address the systemic and personal challenges that inhibit children’s intrinsic motivation to read and learn. His debut children’s book, Gross Greg, combines Irby’s passion for early literacy and comedy. Gross Greg is a laugh-out-loud story that captures the hilariously gross behavior of kids everywhere. As a stand up comedian, Irby's fresh perspective and smart brand of humor shine through in his comedy album "Really Dense." His clever social commentary and funny observations have not gone unnoticed.
