An undergraduate degree in social work is not required, though it can help build foundational knowledge and set them up for success in the graduate program.Begin with the end in mind when considering social work as a college path and career, as it will take additional time in school, which costs more. A doctorate is not required to work in social work unless your student ultimately wants to work in research or academia.  “When people hear social workers, they think of just child welfare. And we do so much more than that - you can find us in every facet of society.” – Shara RuffinAbout Shara Ruffin: Shara is an independently licensed clinical social worker and former psychotherapist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bill Gamber might be the most influential person in the outdoor industry that you've never heard of. Over the past 20 years, he's helped to build two of the best known and fastest growing brands in the outdoor retail category. His innovations in outdoor gear have become mainstays for people who love to camp as well as creating a whole new category of race nutrition. He's been massively influential in building Colorado's outdoor economy and shaping the state's recreational future, but Bill fundamentally believes that actions speak louder than words, so he rarely touts his successes.  He's a product pioneer, a born leader and hard charging when it comes to running a growing company in a competitive market. Bill started his first business in a Pennsylvania college dorm room at Lock Haven University in 1985. Needing money to pay for triathlon race entry fees, Bill began selling homemade bike and triathlon shorts out of the back of his Jetta. This side hustle would become Bwear Action Products, otherwise known as BAP! Eventually, Bill would graduate and move to Steamboat Springs, Colo., where he found a permanent home for BAP! In 2000, Bill co-founded Big Agnes and launched with a simple, but revolutionary idea: save weight and space with a unique, integrated sleeping bag and pad system. This would be the first in a long line of products “firsts” that would revolutionize the outdoor industry.  In 2001, Bill co-founded Honey Stinger, which specializes in honey-based nutrition. You could say honey runs in Bill's blood – his family has been in the honey business for more than 60 years and his grandfather invented the original plastic honey bear. Today, Honey Stinger is known throughout the endurance sports world, and products like Honey Stinger chews and waffle are favorites for runners, cyclists, skiers, hikers, climbers and more. In 2019 Bill transitioned away from Honey Stinger after a significant third-party investment and now focuses on Big Agnes and BAP!. Bill is competitive, but not just when it comes to camping and nutrition. He holds the 12-hour solo record for the 24 Hours of Steamboat mountain bike race. He's completed more than 100 triathlons, including 16 Ironmans.  For the past 28 years, Bill has been living off the grid in Steamboat with his family, in a solar and wind-powered home and spends most of his free time camping, fishing, cycling and skiing.

I met Brock around 2012 at the very beginning of my bodybuilding years. I've known him as a humble yet well-informed trainer who is constantly keeping himself up to date with his knowledge in the industry.  Having witnessed his own personal transformation in mind, body, and soul over the years, Brock focuses on true personal development, hard work, and building a long-lasting community within his business. It has grown so much that he now has several amazing employees who have the same level of energy and commitment that he has. Today, Brock talks about the power of training for longevity. That being said, you also need to be able to hold space for people so you can relate to them and for transformation to happen not only on a physical level, but also, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. One of the takeaways Brock shares in this interview is that action precedes motivation. If you're waiting for motivation, it might never come. And so, you need to do the thing first. Then once you do it, you actually feel more motivated to do the thing again and again. You just have to take that first step. As you might recall, Chancellor Greenstein is also forcing mergers on three additional campus in Western PA - California, Clarion, and Edinboro. Are we heading toward herd immunity? That’s what Trump’s new COVID-19 “medical advisor” is pushing. Fox News commentator, Radiologist Scott Atlas, has been long pushing herd immunity as a strategy. According to an analysis by The Washington Post, that would mean that about 65% of Americans would need to contract the virus. Assuming a fatality rate of 1%, that would mean over 2 million people in the U.S. will die.  Good thing Trump’s CDC just told the states to get ready to distribute a coronavirus vaccine by November 1.  Trump visits Kenosha, Wisconsin in order to stir the pot and fan the flames of racism and hate.  Trump tells crowds in North Carolina to vote twice. When pressed on it, he doubled down. Then he heading to Latrobe, PA to say the same thing.  Biden’s lead in new Monmouth University poll tightens to only 4 points, 49-45. The previous version of the poll released in July had Biden with a 13 point lead, 53-40.  Hey, did you see the new Biden speech? Law and Order? Really? Close to 1.8 million Pennsylvanians are at risk of eviction since Governor Wolf refused to extend the moratorium and since Republicans haven’t done a thing to protect renters during this time.  Pennsylvania House and Senate Republicans came back early this week to push Donald Trump’s Voter Suppression agenda through the Assembly.  House Bill 2626 seeks to “reform” the recently passed Act 77 by removing county drop boxes and allow out of county white nationalists to “watch over the polls” and intimidate black and brown voters. If suppressing the vote isn’t your thing, well, then, maybe racism is.  This week Cumberland County District Attorney Skip Ebert made some pretty racist comments on a thread about Jacob Blake being shot in the back 7 times AND Congressman Scott Perry took the time to explain that “systemic racism” isn’t really a thing. The fallout from these racist incidents went far and wide.  The Cumberland County Republicans, the York County Republicans, Skip Ebert, and Scott Perry all doubled-down on their racism.   But there is one shining light.  The former chair of the York Republican Party posted on Facebook that he and his wife made max contributions to Eugene DePasquale over Scott Perry’s racism.  The former county chair explained that he is in a biracial marriage and this was the first time he has ever donated to a Democrat.   Naturally, the current York Republican chair - and disgraced former State Senator - Jeff Piccolla called the old party chair “a traitor.” Outlier PASSHE universities are seeing spikes in cases and are being forced to curb their bravado. Bloomsburg University shuts down in-person classes after cases of COVID-19 explode. Lock Haven University hit the pause button on in-person classes for at least two weeks after a spike in cases. And, Kutztown University, ah, yes, Kutztown University, has seen cases at least triple this week.  Temple University also hit the two-week pause button on in-person classes after at least 103 new cases were reported over the weekend. On Tuesday, Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley told Temple students, "You should assume that anyone around you is infected," Farley said Tuesday, addressing Temple students. "Stay in your room or stay in your apartment unless you have to go out for essential errands. Wear a mask when you're around anyone else. Otherwise, this outbreak could grow quickly, and it could threaten the rest of the campus and the rest of the city." Just as student activists with the Student Coalition for Change have been warning, city officials are now concerns that Temple will be ground zero for a community outbreak.  ESU Food Service workers win their union election. Former Lock Haven University shooting guard Wali Hepburn joins us to discuss his experiences growing up in South Philadelphia. He describes the different dynamics of his upbringing between his parents’ separate households. From an early age Wali had an above average feel for the game, allowing him to play in higher age groups in organized basketball. These advantages helped him to play with his older brother, who was his inspiration to play the game. Wali attended St. John Neumann-Maria Goretti High School, a school flourishing into a powerhouse filled with many Division 1 Basketball players. Due to the competitive environment, Wali would have to adjust to not being a starter. During his high-school career he was a starter player for just one game (senior night); because of this college offers were minimal, changing his basketball future. He eventually attended Shippensburg University, where the lack of playing time started to affect his academics leading to his dismissal from the university. After taking some time away from the game, he suffered a tragic loss; one of his childhood best friends to street violence. This pushed Wali to enroll into school, attending Lock Haven University. At Lock Haven, he became one of the best players in the school’s history. Wali scored over 1,600 points, leading them to their first winning season in 20 years. Wali also won conference player of the year and many other accolades. Finally given the ability to showcase the talents he always possessed, Wali would graduate from Lock Haven embarking on his pro basketball career. Dear Billie Author, PTSD Spokesman, Ben Miller:  Today's new guest co-host is a multi-author, with his most recent project, Dear Billie. We're trying to help Ben get the word out there on his Kickstarter launch for this book. Ben Miller was born and raised in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, graduating Nazareth High School in Nazareth, PA in 1993. Immediately after high school, he enlisted in the US Navy and attended boot camp in Orlando, FL. Miller was then trained in Naval Intelligence and granted security clearance two levels above Top Secret with an additional compartment. While working overseas with Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron Two (VQ-2) during the Bosnian War, Miller began suffering crippling attacks that military doctors were unable to explain. Miller was transported back to America and based on his exemplary record, he was awarded an early Honorable Discharge. It was later determined by a team of doctors with the Department of Veterans Affairs that Miller suffered from Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia and PTSD, which were both deemed service-connected. Miller elected to pursue a college degree at Lock Haven University, where he also joined the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity. He graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and a Minor in Journalism. It would be four more years and a series of personal tragedies, before Miller began his literary career as a columnist with Exit Zero, a weekly magazine based in Cape May, NJ. His initial writings were primarily historical in nature, though he also penned the occasional feature story and editorial. In 2008, Miller set his sights on a higher goal, when he created 'Donate My Weight', a campaign to use weight loss as a means to raise donations for food banks across America. He appeared on NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX news segments all over the country, along with a series of radio interviews and appearances on the 10! Show, Good Day Philadelphia and the Rachael Ray Show. In July of 2009, Exit Zero Publishing released Miller's first book, The First Resort, a hardcover coffee table book that profiles America's first resort town, Cape May, NJ. The book features 300 full-color pages and details the city's history from 1609 to 2009, accentuated with over 500 pictures. The First Resort has been well received by critics, historians and fans of Cape May from around the world, selling out of its initial printing after only a few months. The Philadelphia Inquirer named it one of the 'Top 10 Coffee Table Books of 2009'. Miller’s second book, In the Land of Exit Zero, was released in 2011. It’s a children’s book focusing on Cape May’s history and all the book’s illustrations are original oil paintings that were commissioned by the publisher. Cape May Moments is Miller’s third book about the region’s history and is currently being edited by the publisher. As Miller’s disabilities worsened with each passing year, Panic Disorder and PTSD grew into generalized anxiety disorder and depression. Meanwhile, unexpected physical challenges arose, and Miller was diagnosed with severe spinal problems, Meniere's Disease and the autoimmune disorder, Rheumatoid Arthritis. A husband and father of five, Miller continues to push back against his struggles and currently sees several private doctors on a regular basis, along with doctors from the VA. He is “Medically Retired” due to his disabilities and rated 100% disabled by the VA and Social Security. Nonetheless, Miller refuses to acquiesce to his conditions and give up living as productive a life as possible. He is an avid volunteer with fundraising for families in need and non-profit organizations in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania and in Cape May, NJ. Miller has also voluntered his services to curate three critically-acclaimed museum exhibits for the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and is scheduled to open his fourth next Spring. For his volunteerism efforts, Miller has received...

When the conversation among Pennsylvania wrestling fans turns to “the best ever,” Jefferson Morgan High School alumnus Cary Kolat’s name is always in the mix. Kolat compiled a 137-0 high school record with four Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association championships, and he was named Outstanding Wrestler at the PIAA tournament each year he competed, an honor no other wrestler has achieved even twice. As a freshman at Penn State, Kolat won a Big Ten title and placed second in the NCAA Championships at 134 pounds. As a sophomore, he was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Year and finished third in the NCAA Tournament. Kolat sat out a year to transfer to Lock Haven University, but he came back better than ever, winning back-to-back NCAA titles at 142 pounds in 1996 and 1997 with a two-year record of 50-1. Kolat won two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles and back-to-back Eastern Wrestling League championships. He was named Outstanding Wrestler both years and finished his college career with a 111-7 record and 53 pins. On the international level, Kolat was a member of the U.S. Freestyle Team from 1997 to 2001, and he won a silver medal at the World Championships in 1997 and a bronze medal in 1998. He won three World Cup gold medals, one World Cup silver and two Pan American championships. He was the University National freestyle champion in 1995 and the U.S. Open champion in 1997, 1999 and 2000. In his first Olympic freestyle match at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, Kolat faced the reigning world champion, Mohammad Talaei. He scored a thrilling 3-1 overtime victory only to have the result protested. Forced to re-wrestle the match, he lost a narrow 5-4 decision and eventually placed ninth. For his record of success in the United States and around the world, Cary Kolat is honored as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. I tried to imagine an early morning drive with poet Marjorie Maddox, whose creative suitcase is crammed with metaphors. I was enveloped in fog, which occluded my vision, on this particular day. My surroundings became the murky sea, and my auto a submarine. The tall, stark silver maples along the roadway became the kelp forests off the coast of California, and the 18-wheeler entering the road from the left became a large, gray whale, which I followed into a labyrinth of coral reefs (the city) teeming with colorful fish (cars) darting back and forth. The entire morning after our chat was spent in a dreamy, soft-focused world of poetry, and it felt good. I felt like I had a special pair of glasses that transformed the world around me, and I couldn't stop jotting down ideas. Last night, I browsed the stacks at a bookstore in Virginia while visiting family, and immediately was drawn to the poetry section. I looked at names on spines and wondered, "Who are these people? How do I know if I'll enjoy them?" I chickened out and picked up an anthology of the best 100 poems in the world, tucking it into my suitcase for later. This is why I enjoy speaking with other writers, especially writers who are comfortable with their craft. Their love for their work inspires me to explore and stretch and be brave. I'll most likely never do much with my foggy morning/under the sea poem, but it was such fun to look around as I drove the same lonely stretch of road into town and to see something different. Something I hadn't seen in the hundreds of other drives. Marjorie has published 11 poetry collections, and a book of literary fiction, and she's edited a lovely book about Keystone poets for Penn State University Press. She’s a professor of English and Creative Writing at Lock Haven University, where she leads students into the world of literature, often "through the back door," encouraging them to view their world with new eyes. She’s gracious and funny and inspiring, and not just with her students, but with her readers. I curled up on my window seat, snow piling up outside, and read through her poetry collection, "Local News from Someplace Else," and at times, I laughed aloud. Other times, I wiped a tear. I could relate to almost every poem she wrote, either as a parent, a teacher, a stranger in Pennsylvania, as a world citizen. Next, I moved on to "True, False, None of the Above," and was enchanted by the word play as her poems danced the tango with Robert Frost and others. I laughed again as the English teacher struggled with suicide notes, tossing one illegible farewell into the wastebasket after the other, only to get back to work grading papers. Who hasn't felt the drudgery of work, and felt the task at hand was terminal? I had a great time chatting with Marjorie, as I’m sure you’ll hear. So, accept my half-hearted apologies for interrupting the flow of this show with my giggles, because I'm not sorry I enjoyed myself. Like many people, I am a stranger in a strange land when it comes to poetry, but Marjorie opened the door and welcomed me. Her poetry is accessible, understandable, relatable and sometimes downright fun to read. She's brave, also, tackling heart-breaking events, like the Amish school shooting, or the crash of Flight TWA 800. Author Ray Bradbury says, reading poetry is like flexing a muscle. Reading Marjorie's poems are a workout, swinging the reader from laughter to tears with the turn of a page. All writers yearn for that power. My wish is that Marjorie can inspire you to think creatively about the world around you, as she has inspired me. Start reading poetry. Find poets whom you enjoy and learn more about what inspires them. Hopefully, it will awaken a song in your heart. If it does, capture the ideas as soon as you can, on a piece of paper, or as a voice recording on your mobile phone.  Let your poems gestate, like Marjorie does, then work on them, revise them, and then share them.

Nancy Panko has achieved amazing success with her book, “Guiding Missal,” an unusual story about a prayer book that is carried in the pocket of three generations of men as they navigate war. As she held the Military Missal in her hands, Nancy thought, “If only this little book could talk.” Her novel gives the prayer book a voice. Based on actual events, Nancy’s award winning novel is partially narrated by the small Catholic prayer book that George Panko received as he prepared to deploy to the European theater during World War II. A baker turned infantry man/forward scout, Panko left behind his wife, Gladys, and small son, Butch, for several years as he navigated France and Germany, helping the United States and its Allies win significant skirmishes, including the Battle of the Bulge. Throughout his enlistment, George carried the small book in his pocket and read from it, memorizing passages and whispering prayers. Once safely home, George packed the military missal into a trunk and together he and his wife rear their family. Fifteen years later, his son Butch is ready to graduate from high school and wants to enter the Air Force. George hands him the military missal with a request that he bring it back home, safe and sound. Butch’s experiences while stationed in Germany aren’t always as harrowing as George’s, thanks to George’s efforts as a U.S. Soldier. Still, Butch does live through the Cold War and high-alert situations where ballistic missile launches were potentially moments away, from the Berlin Crisis of 1961 to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Along the way, Butch travels to Italy and gains an audience with St John XXIII, who lifts the prayer book out of Butch's hand and blesses it. At the end of his enlistment, Butch comes home and returns the missal to George. Back into the trunk the book goes. Butch marries Nancy, the love of his life, and they have two children. The couple move to Clinton County, where George enjoys a long career with Woolrich. Nancy began taking general education classes at Lock Haven University, transferring to Lycoming College to begin her nursing education at Williamsport Hospital. She graduated and began her career at Jersey Shore Hospital as a pediatric nurse for one year before working for Geisinger Medical Group in Lock Haven also in pediatrics. She was employed at Glennon Health Services of Lock Haven University for thirteen years before her retirement. Two decades pass and their daughter, Margie, meets and marries T.O., a U.S. Soldier deploying to Africa to combat Al Qaeda in Mogadishu, Somalia. Once again, the military missal’s amazing powers of protection are required. Butch searches for the missal in his late father’s belongings and loans it to his new son-in-law, T.O., with the same request his own father had: Come home safe and return the book. T.O. returns the book, convinced of its power after a U.S. Blackhawk helicopter goes down in 1993, and the resultant battle between forces of the United States and Somali militia fighters. “Guiding Missal” is a heartfelt, homespun tale that has moved people to leave more than two dozen five-star reviews on Amazon.  Nancy’s simple, sweet story has touched so many people it’s become a successful book in both print and digital platforms. Published by Torchflame Books, a hybrid publisher, “Guiding Missal” received the 2017 Silver Award-Medal for Historical Fiction from the Military Writers’ Society of America. Nancy is a ten-time contributor to “Chicken Soup for the Soul” and “Guideposts” magazines. She is a member of the Cary Senior Writing Circle, The Light of Carolina Christian Writers’ Group, and The Military Writers’ Society of America. She and her husband moved from Lock Haven, Pennsylvania to North Carolina in 2009. They have two children and four grandchildren. They love being in, on, or near the water with their family.

Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman is a former division 1 wrestler at Lock Haven University, Spanish teacher, fighter in the UFC, Pros vs. Joes champion, motivational speaker and author of the autobiography “Driven." Although he doesn’t always drink beer, when he does he prefers Dos Equis (not really, but he gives the most interesting man in the world a run for his money).  Charlie is listed ahead of James Franklin, Head Football Coach at Penn State University, on the most notable alumni list on Wikipedia, so I am not the only one who thinks he is pretty cool!   Charlie and I were connected by Mike Marsteller, who was our guest in Episode 4.  Mike thought Charlie's perspective on sports and life would be perfect for the podcast and boy, was he right!  Thanks Mike!   This was an all-encompassing interview that touched on all the topics we strive to address on the Heads 'N Tales podcast.  Just to name a few we discuss handling both victory and defeat, overcoming injuries, managing concussions and doing the little things right.   Charlie also gives us some insight into his "Elements of Success", which include creating a vision, identifying core values, defining success, living with accountability and surrounding yourself with the best. Charlie is a professional speaker and teaches these elements to his audience.  Check out the video below to see him in action: After listening to this episode I highly recommend reading his autobiography "Driven!"  I read it to prep for the interview and felt such a connection to it that I couldn't put it down.  I felt like "The Spaniard" was talking to me the entire time and he had me laughing through the ups and downs of his journey.  I recommend the book to both athletes and non-athletes because there aren't too many people in the world who can say that they have lived there dream and Charlie teaches the reader what it takes to accomplish this.  One of Heads 'N Tales' missions is to help athletes transition to life after sports and I know this Charlie's message will do just that!
