The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
There is an awareness available to anyone who steps fully into their forties. It often happens a couple of years after turning the big 4 - 0, but it's there, waiting for each of us to realize we are half-way through (if we are so fortunate to live into our 90s) this beautiful gift called life. This awareness prompts courage and discipline as well as motivation to just get about the business of living out the dreams we may have been too timid to try in our earlier years. We begin to see that taking care of our health is more than worth the investment. We begin to know that loving fully is the best thing to do for our life enjoyment even though we also know there will be great pain in the goodbye. That goodbye is a privilege only the brave experience by being wholly vulnerable, kind and truly giving of their true selves and accepting others as theirs. The leaning is a good thing because we see over the handrail of life that we are fortunate to have this vantage point and we are not going to toss aside the wisdom gained along the way. The leaning is both a gift and a motivator. This year, as I celebrated my 46th birthday on the tail-end of February, I wanted to continue to the annual tradition of sharing what I have learned during the past twelve months. May it inspire you embrace life even more fully and bravely than you already are and enjoy each day all the more. POTUS: Legacy of the 46th. Conrad Black, National Post. 1885 Treasury Department
Tracy Stapp Herold is the special projects editor at Entrepreneur magazine. The Annual Franchise 500 is her MOST ANTICIPATED publications each year. It is Franchising's equivalent of the Oscars, the Emmy's, the Grammys, albeit minus the red carpet, but it is the Big Deal of the Year, when it comes to ratings. So, what goes into that pot of stew. How many data points are included and how are they massaged, measured and weighted. How much if any, has the changing nature of franchising influenced the curation of the data that drives the 500. Not that long ago, our industry was more Mom and Pop, operator centric with what were typically founder-led brands. Today, it's not unusual to see franchisee enterprises that eclipse many franchisor organizations in size and infrastructure. Massive MUMBO'S multi-unit multi branded operations with dozens sometimes hundreds of locations. And, on the Zor side, we see tons of roll-ups... Portfolios of brands, dominating specific verticals and service areas, led by divisions and subdivisions of Private Equity Sponsors replacing those founder-led concepts of yester year, with the power of professional management, deep pockets for growth and investment, igniting the economies of scale like rocket fuel. It's safe to say that our corner of the world, franchising is a changed place not your dad's old Buick which means what's important in 2025 to the compilation of the Franchise 500 too, must look a lot different. Or does it? Here to answer that and talk a whole lot more about it: Tracy Stapp Herold, Editor of Special Projects, at Entrepreneur Media.
PRAYER OF CONSECRATION TO MARY “O Immaculate Virgin, Mother of the true God and Mother of the Church!, who from this place reveal your clemency and your pity to all those who ask for your protection, hear the prayer that I address to you with filial trust, and present it to your Son Jesus, our sole Redeemer. Mother of Mercy, teacher of hidden and silent sacrifice, to you, who come to meet us sinners, I consecrate on this day all my being and all my love. I also consecrate to you my life, my work, my joys, my infirmities, and my sorrows. Grant peace, justice and prosperity to our people; for I entrust to your care all that I have and all that I am, my Lady and Mother. I wish to be entirely yours and to walk with you along the way of complete faithfulness to Jesus Christ in His Church. Hold me always with your loving hand. Virgin of Guadalupe, Mother of the Americas, I pray to you for all the bishops, that they may lead the faithful along paths of intense Christian life, of love and humble service of God and souls. Contemplate this immense harvest, and intercede with the Lord that He may instill a hunger for holiness in the whole people of God, and grant abundant vocations of priests and religious, strong in the faith and zealous dispensers of God's mysteries. Grant to my home the grace of loving and respecting life in its beginnings, with the same love with which you conceived in your womb the life of the Son of God. Blessed Virgin Mary, protect my family, so that they may always be united, and bless the upbringing of the children. Our hope, look upon me with compassion, teach me to go continually to Jesus and, if I fall, help me to rise again, to return to Him, by means of the confession of my faults and sins in the Sacrament of Penance, which gives peace to the soul. I beg you to grant me a great love for all the holy Sacraments, which are, as it were, the signs that your Son left us on earth. Thus, Most Holy Mother, with the peace of God in my conscience, with my heart free from evil and hatred, I will be able to bring to all true joy and true peace, which come to me from your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.”
The world is facing some of its most severe problems: corruption, poverty, human trafficking, drug use, gambling, addiction, abortion, hunger, and broken families. Villanueva as he delivers God's message to the JIL people, the Body of Christ, and the nation during the Jesus Is Lord Church Worldwide's 46th Anniversary.Support the show

NM ranks a poor 49th in US News and World Reports' "Best states" report: Paul and Wally discuss what makes up this report. NM schools have more money to spend than any neighboring state (and the data don't even include recent spending growth). NM students spend plenty of time in the classroom (and the international comparisons are really shocking). New Mexico is the 46th-best state for doctors according to a new report from Wallethub. MLG: NM's oil and gas boom to continue for at least 5 more years. Shocking property tax assessments in Sandoval County. Is there anything that can be done?
Our guest this week is Jesse Rice, who took a circuitous route to becoming one of Indianapolis' most unpredictable arts, entertainment and community entrepreneurs. He grew up in a blue-collar family in a small town, and then went to Purdue University with hopes of going to med school. He flipped his focus to finance and ended up working at Enterprise Rent-A-Car and J.P. Morgan Chase. He and a friend started kicking around ideas for a venue where they could serve their own beer and feature live music. As Rice says, “I think of something I want that needs to happen, and I just somehow make it happen.” So was born Black Circle Brewing Company, just west of the intersection of 46th Street and Keystone Avenue, which opened in 2016. In addition to craft beverages and some family friendly areas, it features a broad spectrum of entertainment, including heavy metal, drag and comedy shows. In 2019, he opened an eclectic spot a few blocks to the west called Loom, which became the new home of Black Circle's brewing operation, as well as a co-working space, a bar, a pinball parlor and a coin-operated laundromat. Just last October, he bought a 99-year-old building at 3317 E. 10th St. that once was home to American Legion Post 465. Now in the midst of renovation, Rice envisions that project as an event venue, a recording studio and temporary accommodations for visiting musicians. Rice readily admits he had no grand plan when he started on this path eight years ago, but there's something to be said for making it up as you go. In this week's edition of the IBJ Podcast, Rice discusses how he developed the first two venues while maintaining his career in corporate America and then in 2019, pursuing an MBA. He also details what he learned in the master's program and how that changed how he ran Black Circle Brewing Co., the umbrella firm for all of these projects. And he takes a look back at what he's created over eight years and what he thinks is most valuable. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.
