Water is essential for all life on Earth, yet climate change is disrupting the natural water cycle, altering where, when, and how much water is available. In many ways, climate change expresses itself through water. In this episode, James and Daisy talk about the vital role of water. What is the water cycle? How will water security will be impacted by the changing climate? What can we do about it? SOME RECOMMENDATIONS: Is a River Alive? by Robert Macfarlane – At the heart of this book is a single, transformative idea: that rivers are not mere matter for human use but living beings – who should be recognized as such in both imagination and law.Mina Guli is a renowned water advocate and ultrarunner who has dedicated her life to solving one of the world's most urgent issues - the global water crisis. Following a successful 15-year career in law, finance and climate change, Mina founded Thirst - a non-profit focused on changing how we think about water. In March 2022, for the #RunBlue campaign, Mina set out to run 200 marathons in just one year, finishing the race at the first global UN water conference on World Water Day, 22 March 2023. Only 2.5% of Earth's water is freshwater - the amount needed for life to survive.World Bank (2017) – Globally, 70% of freshwater is used for agriculture. World Bank (2023) – 2 billion people live in countries experiencing high water stress. WaterAid – Diarrhoea caused by dirty water and poor toilets kills one child under the age of five nearly every two minutes. WaterAid – A staggering 90% of all natural disasters are water-related.Thank you for listening! We should all start running for water. Zero Carbon, that's a mantra we all heard, and we all can rely upon. Well, international gatherings and global conversations are no different: everybody's heard of Carbon and climate change. That's great! But meanwhile, water is always forgotten from those same conversations. Though how do people experience climate change?  Well, through floods when there's an extreme weather event, droughts when we're on the other side of that same coin, and pollution when displaced people don't find safe access to water. In a nutshell, through water. This is why the Run Blue movement led by Mina Guli rallies to get everyone on board, starting with the companies that abstract about 90% of the water on earth. They can commit to running their operations blue, and we can all support them in doing so by reminding them how much we value our water.  Like Mina Guli, who ran one hundred marathons in one hundred days to raise awareness, we should all start running for water! Wanna dive deeper into the topic? Check my full conversation with Mina Guli on the progress towards SDG 6 and how to speed things up!

The founder and CEO of Thirst, Mina Guli is a global leader, entrepreneur and adventurer committed to making a difference in the world. Following a 15-year career in climate change, Mina established Thirst – a non-profit changing the way we think about water. Since its launch in 2012, Thirst has educated more than 2 million students in China, has had more than 600,000 participants in its water innovation competitions and now works with more than 1000 qualified volunteers and the support of the Chinese Government. To bring attention to the global water crisis, in 2016 Mina ran across 7 deserts on 7 continents in just 7 weeks. A self-confessed "non-runner", en route Mina interviewed water experts, telling the stories of people affected by the crisis and those working to solve it. In 2017 Mina ran in support of the UN's SDG 6, completing 40 marathons in 40 days down 6 of the world's great rivers on 6 continents. With media coverage around the world, including CNN, BBC, ITV, ABC and CCTV, Mina's messages about water reached more than 4 billion people, inspiring a generation of water heroes. Concerned about the pace of change, in 2018, Mina started #RunningDry – a campaign involving her running 100 marathons in 100 days for 1 reason – to make saving water so famous it's not just the right thing to do, but the only thing to do. After breaking her leg at marathon 62, thousands of people in over 50 countries and territories rallied in support, together running farther than from the north to the south poles, and building #RunningDry into a movement for change. Mina has been widely recognised for her leadership: named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, one of Australia's most influential women, and by Fortune Magazine as one of the 50 greatest leaders in the world. Mina sits on the board of the Antarctic Science Foundation, the Global Water Partnership and the Academy of the $1 million Global Teachers Prize. She is a frequent media commentator.

How far would you go to raise awareness of your cause? Today we chat with Fortune 50's great leaders, Mina Guli. An ultra-marathon runner and water activist, Mina founded the global movement #RunningDry to raise awareness about water consumption. Mina a self-confessed ‘bad runner', completed 40 marathons across seven deserts on seven continents in seven weeks in 2016 and then completed the equivalent of 40 marathons in 40 days down six of the world's great rivers in 2017. In 2018, Mina began #RunningDry which has quickly grown into a global movement.  She set out to complete 100 marathons in 100 days.  After running 62 marathons, Mina was devastated to break her femur.  That's when she realised that this ‘movement is bigger than me': her team of supporters helped her to achieve her goal by running the remaining 38 marathons in her stead and even pushing her along in a racing wheelchair. A former corporate lawyer, Mina has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and one of the 50 greatest leaders in the world by Fortune Magazine. Following a 15-year career as a world leader in climate change that started with law, but progressed quickly to the World Bank and to co-founding boutique investment firm Peony Capital, Mina established Thirst  – a non-profit that is solving the water crisis by changing the way we think about water. Since its launch in 2012, Thirst has educated more than 2 million students in China, has had more than 600,000 participants in its innovation competitions and now works with more than 1000 qualified volunteers and has the support of the Chinese Government. To highlight the global water crisis, in 2016 Mina completed the 7 Deserts Run — running the equivalent of 40 marathons across 7 deserts on 7 continents in 7 weeks. A self-confessed “non-runner”, Mina told the stories of some of those affected by the crisis during the run. The success of the expedition encouraged Mina to undertake the 6 River Run in support of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 6. She ran 40 marathons in 40 days down 6 of the world’s great rivers on 6 continents. With media coverage around the world, including on CNN, BBC, ITV, ABC and CCTV, Mina’s messages about water have reached more than 4 billion people, inspiring a generation of water heroes. Mina has been recognised for her leadership: she has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, one of Australia’s most influential women, and by Fortune Magazine in 2016 alongside Angela Merkel, Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook and the Pope as one of the 50 greatest leaders in the world. On November 4, 2018, Mina began her next challenge: #RunningDry, which will see her run 100 marathons in 100 days around the world for 1 reason — water. Top Takeaways: A research study that Mina participated in showed that 80% of Millennials changed their behavior once they learned more about the water crisis and the changes they could make to positively impact the problem. Three out of four Millennials wanted to amplify their impact by telling their friends, family, and community. “We’ve been so barraged by advertising, by corporate communication, that we no longer listen. Mina Guli could have used this as an excuse to define her life with limitations and boundaries defined by victimhood.
