The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the forty-sixth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by LTC Mason Thornal, the Battalion Commander of 1-509th IN (OPFOR) on behalf of the Commander of Operations Group. Today's guests are members of Geronimo's infamous Spectre Team, their information warfare team. MAJ Michael Wright, the Info War Cell Chief or officer-in-charge; CPT James Gardiner, the Deputy Chief and their space operations expert; and CW2 Christian Lehr, their electronic warfare expert.   1-509th IN BN is the opposing forces unit for the Joint Readiness Training Center, the infamous “Geronimo.” The information warfare cell focuses on leveraging information to achieve strategic objectives, often within military or intelligence operations. This includes activities such as cyber operations, psychological operations, and the dissemination of propaganda to influence, disrupt, or deceive adversaries. The cell analyzes and exploits data to gain a tactical advantage, protect critical information, and undermine enemy capabilities. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in countering misinformation and ensuring the integrity of its own communications and operations.   In this episode we focus on the employment of information warfare across multiple domains and various innovations that are helping to transform our forces while in contact. We define innovation as our ability to turn ideas into valued outcomes and then also to be able to do that in a way that we stay ahead of determined, and increasingly capable enemies on the modern battlefield. Specifically, we discuss the Joint Readiness Training Center's new Innovations Initiative Program (I2P) to rapidly share the emerging trends and best practices for the employment of developing technologies into unit systems and processes through a controlled learning environment that is the crucible of the JRTC experience. The I2P includes JRTC's budding innovations laboratory, which includes multiple 3D printers, drone pilot simulators, and other tools of the OPFOR trade.   Here's why your team should consider volunteering to partner with JRTC's I2P: JRTC offers a comprehensive operational environment that is conducive to trying innovative solutions to realistic tactical problem sets. Units are able to plan, execute, assess, and refine at operational speed against determined opponents. Real-time OPFOR & OCT feedback from professionals that facilitate nine or more rotations per year on average. Access to the innovations lab that offers the equipment, material, and most importantly the space to work.   Part of S11 “Conversations with the Enemy” series.   For additional information and insights from this episode, please check-out our Instagram page @the_jrtc_crucible_podcast   Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center.   Follow us by going to: https://linktr.ee/jrtc and then selecting your preferred podcast format.   Again, we'd like to thank our guests for participating. Ray Zahab is a Canadian Explorer, ultra distance runner and Founder of non-profit impossible2Possible. A recent recipient of the Meritorious Service Cross of Canada, Ray is an Explorer in Residence of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. In 2015 Canadian Geographic recognized Ray as one of Canada's Top Explorers. He has ran 17,000+km across the world's deserts, and unsupported expeditions in some of the coldest places on the planet. On November 1, 2006, former “pack a day smoker” turned ultra runner Ray Zahab and two friends, Charlie Engle and Kevin Lin, set out on an expedition to cross the Sahara Desert by foot. 111 days and 7,500 kms after leaving the coast of Senegal, Africa they completed their journey by stepping into the Red Sea. The expedition had the trio running an average of 70kms a day without a single day of rest, for 111 days. National Geographic tracked the expedition by web, as well as the documentary film ‘Running The Sahara', produced by Matt Damon and directed by Academy Award winner James Moll, was created in an effort to raise awareness for the drinking water crisis in North Africa. After witnessing and learning about the water crisis in North Africa, Ray decided to leverage his future adventures to help raise awareness and funding for causes, like this one, that he supports and believes in. In fall 2007, Ray ran the three coastal trails of Canada back to back and each leg virtually non-stop, for a total distance of 400 kms. Logistics were as much of a challenge as the run, and Ray ran The Akshayuk Pass on Baffin Island, East Coast Trail Newfoundland and West Coast Trail in British Columbia, with just enough time to travel in between. In spring 2008 Ray partnered with the ONExONE Foundation for a unique ultra running project. Accompanied by a team of runners, Ray ran an average 80 kms per day in each of Canada's 13 Provinces and Territories in 13 days. Once again logistics were a huge challenge. School visits were arranged along the way, students participated and communities became engaged in the run which supported the work of ONExONE, which supports various charities addressing children's issues globally. In Saskatoon alone, several thousand students and 27 schools were involved in school rallies and a city wide relay with Ray and the team. In 2008, Ray founded impossible2Possible (i2P) (impossible2possible.com) an organization that aims to inspire and educate youth through adventure learning, inclusion and participation in expeditions. Youth Ambassadors are selected from around the world, and then participate, at no cost, in all aspects of the expedition, from logistics and running to creating educational content and team support. All of the i2P Youth Expeditions have included various challenge based initiatives through an Experiential Learning Program, in which thousands of students participate as active ‘team members' during the expeditions, from classrooms all over the world. This program and its technology is also provided at no cost to the students or schools participating. Since its inception, i2P Youth Expeditions have included 14 gruelling expeditions; Baffin Island, Tunisia, the Amazon, Bolivia, India, Botswana, Utah, Peru, Chile, Italy, California, Greece, Death Valley and Canada. The programs and expeditions are 100% free of cost.   SOUTH POLE QUEST EXPEDITION   In 2009, Ray and two fellow Canadians, Kevin Vallely and Richard Weber, broke the world speed record for an unsupported expedition by a team to the Geographic South Pole. In the process, Ray trekked this traditional route from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole, a distance of 1,130 kms, solely on foot and snowshoes, without the use of skis. Students from all over North America joined the team on a daily basis, a program provided through impossible2Possible, as the trio continued their southern trek. The students received daily communications and actively took part in every step of the trek. Essentially becoming “teammates” of the expedition, and teammates of the Guinness World Record achieved. In winter 2010, Ray and Kevin Vallely ran the length of frozen Lake Baikal in Siberia, 650 kms, over the course of 13 days, totally unsupported. Once again communication with satellite video conferencing to schools brought the expedition into classrooms, and classrooms onto the expedition.   ATACAMA EXTREME EXPEDITION   In February 2011 (Summer), Ray became the first person to run the length of the “driest desert on Earth”, the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, solo. Temperatures exceeded 50c as he ran and navigated the 1,200 kms in 20 days with minimal daily re-supply, and with emergency supplies on his back. Thousands of students joined this journey, again under his i2P organization, via live web and video conferencing. In August 2011 (Summer), Ray and Will Laughlin ran from the north park boundary to the south park boundary of Death Valley National Park, totally off-road. The 237 km run saw temps reaching over 120 degrees F. This would be followed in 2015 with an abbreviated off- road crossing from north park boundary, exiting at the Badwater Basin after crossing the Devil's Golf Course. Beginning June 23rd 2013 (Summer), Ray ran over 2,000km, solo, across Mongolia and the Gobi Desert, with minimal daily resupplies. Support team included both a film crew and photographer who recorded not only the expedition, and created an archive sharing the stories of the people and culture of Mongolia to schools around the world. In February 2014 (winter) Ray completed his 4th unsupported crossing of Baffin Island through the Akshayuk Pass (he would go on to complete 8 unsupported crossings in various seasons). In January 2015 (summer) Ray ran 1,000km across the Patagonian Desert, and then in summer 2015 Ray did a partial crossing of Death Valley National Park, his second project in the area.   ARCTIC 2 ATACAMA EXPEDITION   In February 2016, Ray Zahab (CAN), Jen Segger (CAN) and Stefano Gregoretti (Italy) set out on a unique and challenging expedition that spanned 100 degrees celsius on the thermometer. The team journeyed from -50°C (-58F) to +50°C (120F) over 1,500km, on mountain bikes and foot, crossing both Baffin Island in Canadian winter, and the Atacama Desert in Chilean summer. This would mark Ray's second crossing the length of the Atacama Desert. In February 2017- Ray Zahab and Stefano Gregoretti would go on to complete the second and third stages of a three part expedition in the Canadian Arctic after a near disastrous start in which Ray broke through a frozen river in the Torngats Mountain Range. The duo rallied back to ski unsupported across Baffin Island, and then fatbike across the Northwest Territories along the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road (500km). Beginning mid January 2018 (Summer), Ray once again teamed up with Stefano Gregoretti to run the length of Namibia, crossing the Namib Desert, approx. 1,850km. Summertime temperatures were intense, and terrain was a mix of cross country, open desert, canyons, gravel roads and track. September 2018, Ray completes his 7th crossing of Baffin Island, in 25.5 hours, coast to coast through the Akshayuk Pass. Fall 2018, Ray, along with close friends, establish KapiK1 Expedition Co, with the goal of giving people the opportunity to join them on adventure travel based expeditions to many of the regions of the world Ray and his team have previously explored. www.kapik1.com In winter (February 2019) Ray and teammate Stefano Gregoretti attempted an unsupported crossing of the Kamchatka Peninsula in far east Russia. After 19 days of brutal conditions, the team (no longer unsupported) was prevented from moving forward due to dangerous and fast flowing open rivers, and were unable to achieve their goal of reaching the east coast. July 2019 (summer), Will Laughlin and Ray Zahab successfully transect Death Valley, from west to east, across the Panamint Mountain Range, Death Valley Basin, and the Amargosa Mountains. It took the duo 35 hours to complete the crossing, moving virtually non stop, taking breaks only at resupply caches. September 2019, Ray completes 8th crossing of Baffin Island, Akshayuk Pass. His brother John joined him, almost 20 years since he first inspired Ray to change his life and pursue a life in the outdoors. They completed their run in roughly 25 hours. January 2020, Ray successfully completes a solo traverse from the island community of Qikiqtarjuaq, across the sea ice to Baffin Island, and onto Pangnirtung Fjord. It was the first January crossing for Baffin, and took 5 days, dragging all of his supplies with him. Intense cold, little daylight, boulder fields, overflow and heavy winds were among the challenges. This was Ray's 9th crossing of Baffin. July 2021, Ray and Will Laughlin abandon an attempted retracing of the 2011 North to South crossing of Death Valley, off road. After the first 24 hours of moving non-stop, temperatures reached a world record high, and became too dangerous to proceed. At Furnace Creek, recorded temps reached 134F. March 2022, Kevin Vallely and Ray have to cut their attempted crossing of Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic short due to several ongoing setbacks. The duo plans a return to complete their expedition in collaboration with friends who live in the region. July 2022, Ray and Stefano Gregoretti successfully complete a West to East crossing of Death Valley NP, at its widest point in summer. They collected ongoing weather data as they made their transect, for use in a future impossible2Possible Youth Education program. They planned for 48 hours but were able to complete the transect in 34 hours, with resupplies 20-30km apart along the way. Ray has also found the time to write two books about his life and adventures. Running for My Life published in 2007 and Ray's second book, geared at youth readers, Running to Extremes, which recently became a National Best-Seller in Canada. Both books focused on Ray's transition from an unhealthy life- both physically and emotionally, to ultra runner and beyond- and the philosophy that we are ALL capable of achieving the extraordinary in our lives. He is currently writing his third book. In addition to being an adventurer, youth advocate and runner, Ray speaks around the world at events such as TED, IOC World Conference, Idea City, The Economist World in 2010 and 2011, World Affairs Council, and numerous Apple Distinguished Educator events internationally, as well as numerous corporate events. He has been interviewed and appeared on several talk and news programs including CNNi, CNN, The Hour, CBC, CTV, BBC, Jay Leno, OLN and Discovery, and has connected his expeditions live, using satellite to both mainstream and social media. He has also appeared in print media globally, and has been interviewed on numerous popular podcasts. Ray was the host of Project Guatemala which aired on OLN, and co hosted-guided a few episodes of Finding Sarah on OWN. Outside of his own organization Ray has volunteered as a board member, Ryan's Well Foundation, volunteered as Athletic Ambassador of the ONExONE.org, and SpreadTheNet. He has previously volunteered with Run For Water, The Assembly of First Nations, and various other initiatives. Ray received the ONExONE Difference Award in 2007, and the Torchbearers Award in 2010. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Royal Canadian Geographical Society. In spring 2012, Ray was invited by H.E. Tsogtbaatar Damdin (Minister of Environment, Mongolia) to join their Internal Advisory Committee. In 2015 and 2019 Canadian Geographic recognized Ray as one of Canada's Top Explorers. In December 2015 Ray was presented with the Meritorious Service Cross of Canada by the Governor General of Canada. In 2018 Ray was named Explorer in Residence by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. He continues today with life as an adventurer and as a volunteer with impossible2Possible. Transitioning from an unhealthy lifestyle to ultrarunning races to ‘Running The Sahara' would begin a lifelong journey of discovery. A journey of learning that some of the greatest barriers to achieving our goals are the ones we put upon ourselves. By breaking these down, Ray has learned that we are all capable of achieving truly extraordinary things…a message he continues to share with his two young daughters! Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain Open Source Design! The podcast where we talk about sustaining open source with design. Learn how we, as designers, interface with open source in a sustainable way, how we integrate into different communities, and how we as coders, work with other designers. Today, with Eriol, we have Kelsey Smith hosting as well, who is a UX Designer at Simply Secure. We are very excited to have three guests joining us from different projects. Joining us are Lucie, who is working on I2P (Invisible Internet Project) as a UX Designer and researcher, Saptak is a Human Rights Concerned Web Developer, working as a contractor with Freedom of the Press Foundation, and Sadie, works on I2P, putting together the Usability Lab, and her work focus is on UX, design, and open source tools. Our discussions today are focused on the collaboration between designers and developers in open source software, and we learn more how these two functions interact with each other, and challenges they faced doing this collaboration work. Go ahead and download this episode now to find out more! [00:03:00] Eriol starts off by asking our guests how design, developer handoff, or collaboration work in their teams and projects, and how it got to be that way in their projects. [00:06:14] Sadie tells us what it's like to be this bridge between design and development and how it's a little bit more developer led at the moment. [00:09:50] Saptak fills us in on projects he works in and how design, developer handoff, and collaboration work in the projects he is a part of. [00:15:41] Eriol wonders if there are other challenges that our guests have faced in doing this collaboration work, and to share examples of good processes and not so good processes. [00:20:02] Lucie explains her process of doing design around something that might have interesting, complicated, or unknown parts of the process that she might need to discover through conversation with the developers or technical teams. [00:23:17] Sadie explains more how she facilitates conversations between the design and developer. [00:25:52] Kelsey asks Saptak what he would like designers to know about the dev processes specifically in this space versus other spaces, and he tells us about a tool that he's found to be really helpful with developers and designers called Accessibility Bluelines. [00:31:39] Sadie geos more in depth about design practices, security, and human rights. [00:35:41] Lucie talks about the differences she has noticed with the collaboration process for developers and designers within open source compared to private software projects. [00:38:41] Find out where you can follow Saptak, Sadie, and Lucie online. Also, Kelsey talks about a project they are working on called Useful Projects. Quotes [00:04:11] “It really helps to have a little bit of knowledge of the technical aspect in order to design effectively.” [00:05:25] “On our team specifically, Sadie has served as a bridge between design and development.” [00:22:13] “That has been a part of the process of constantly reframing the question, drilling down to what you really want to know in order to do the design, because I don't need to know all of the extraneous information that goes on the technical and developer side. I just need to know enough to do the design.” [00:32:50] “Adding more definition and having better processes within the new user onboarding to encompass some of those philosophies behind open source, and why we have those things in place is very important.” [00:36:11] “One of the companies I was at was IBM, and two things really stand out to me on the differences between open source and private, and they are capacity and hierarchy.” Links Open Source Design Twitter (https://twitter.com/opensrcdesign) Open Source Design (https://opensourcedesign.net/) Sustain Design & UX working group (https://discourse.sustainoss.org/t/design-ux-working-group/348) Sustain Open Source Twitter (https://twitter.com/sustainoss?lang=en) Richard Littauer Twitter (https://twitter.com/richlitt?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor) Eriol Fox Twitter (https://twitter.com/EriolDoesDesign?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor) Eriol Fox-Simply Secure (https://simplysecure.org/who-we-are/eriol-fox/) Kelsey Smith-Simply Secure (https://simplysecure.org/who-we-are/kelsey/) Saptak Sengupta Website (https://saptaks.website/) Saptak Sengupta Twitter (https://twitter.com/Saptak013) Sadie Twitter (https://twitter.com/yrb1rd) Sadie GItHub (https://github.com/Shoalsteed) I2P (https://geti2p.net/en/) I2P Mastodon (https://mastodon.social/@i2p) I2P Twitter (https://twitter.com/i2p) Lucie Wu Website (https://luwuxu.com/) USABLE Tools (https://usable.tools/) Accessibility Bluelines (https://dribbble.com/shots/6269661-Accessibility-Bluelines) Credits Produced by Richard Littauer (https://www.burntfen.com/) Edited by Paul M. From looking things up on search engines to ordering food, reading news and booking cabs, we use web services every day. But do you know the web as we know it is just a fraction of the actual web space. Yes, and that is why it is called the surface web. It is available for access to anyone and everyone with access to the internet. There is a whole lot more to the web which is not accessible to everyone. People call it the dark web. Curious to know what the dark web is, who uses it, and why it is a maligned space? Let's take a look:   What is the Dark Web? It is that uncharted part of the web which is not accessible to everyone   The Dark Web is a reality that has existed since the beginning of the internet. While there is a load of information indexed on the web and easily accessible by anyone with internet connectivity, irrespective of geography, there is even more information and data that does not come to your notice because it is hidden and requires special privileges to access. This uncharted part of the web is called the Dark Web.   How is the Dark Web different from the surface web?   Surface web Dark web Regulated content Yes No Indexed on search engines Yes No Accessible To everyone Requires special permissions Browser support Most Special ones   Information on the dark web is not defined by regulations and content policies. Moreover, web pages serving information on the dark web do not appear on search engine result pages, or SERPs, like those of Google and Bing because they are hidden and not indexed. Therefore, the dark web includes information that is not easily accessible by everyone. Besides, the web pages serving up information on the dark web are marked unsafe by browsers and do not open on regular internet browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Safari.   Who uses the dark web? Criminals for illegal activities Investigative journalists to acquire info from secret sources Whistleblowers to expose corporate, govt scams   Dark Web is home to all sorts of information but it has gained a bad name because of the prevalence of widespread illegal content, such as illicit pornography, sale of black market drugs, sale of illegal firearms, illegally acquired user databases, etc. The availability of such illegal content makes the dark web a playground for nefarious activities. Among positive use cases, investigative journalists are able to gather information from sources using the dark without risking their identity, and whistleblowers use it to expose corruption at corporations and in governments.   Is the Dark Web illegal? No, it is not illegal to access, if the purpose falls within legal boundaries   While accessing the Dark Web itself is not illegal, using the dark web for acquiring illegal content or procuring prohibited items is illegal. For example, surfing the dark web is not illegal, but if you procure pirated copies of movies and games there, it would be illegal. Similarly, accessing information would not be illegal, unless the information is classified and can be a potential security risk to a nation. Using the Dark Web to access illicit content like child pornography or to procure prohibited items like drugs and guns would also be illegal.   Can the Dark Web be accessed safely? Yes, through specialised browsers with P2P network support With an anonymous web profile With VPN for another layer of security With real identity withheld Not for financial transaction purposes   To access dark web safely, one needs a specialised software with built-in peer-to-peer networking support, besides other browser features. Currently, software like Tor and I2P support these. These are web browsers with added tools to encrypt web traffic for safety and security. It is possible to access the dark web anonymously through such software. Additionally, virtual private network (VPN) services add another layer of security here. However, it must be noted that these software do not

The Van Wirdum Sjorsnado has rebranded, and is now called Bitcoin, Explained! In this episode of Bitcoin, Explained, hosts Aaron van Wirdum and Sjors Provoost discuss Bitcoin Core 22.0, the latest major release of the Bitcoin Core software client, currently the de facto reference implementation of the Bitcoin protocol. Aaron and Sjors highlight several improvements to the Bitcoin Core software. The first of these is hardware wallet support in the graphical user interface (GUI). While hardware wallet support has been rolling out across several previous Bitcoin Core releases, it is now fully available in the GUI. The second highlighted upgrade is support for the Invisible Internet Project (I2P), a Tor-like internet privacy layer. Aaron and Sjors also briefly touch on the differences between I2P and Tor. The third upgrade discussed in the episode is Taproot support. While Taproot activation logic was already included in Bitcoin Core 0.21.1 Bitcoin Core 22.0 is the first major Bitcoin Core release ready to support Taproot when it activates this November, and includes some basic Taproot functionality. The fourth upgrade that Aaron and Sjors discuss is an update to the testmempoolaccept logic, which paves the way to a bigger package relay upgrade. This could in a future release allow transactions to be transmitted over the Bitcoin network in packages including several transactions at the same time. Additionally, Aaron and Sjors briefly discuss an extension to create multisig and add multisig address, the new NAT-PMP option, and more.

Dr Shima Beigi, Founder of Mindfulness Engineering™ BSc, MSc, MSc, Ph.D. interviews Harry Halpin, CEO Nym Technologies SA to talk of the threats and opportunities of hyper-digital connection in the time Covid-19. Harry Halpin: Harry Halpin's goal is to halt surveillance and fight for human freedom through decentralization. 'The terrain of struggle' is technology. Privacy-enhancing technologies and cryptography are his 'weapons'. The article which accompanies this interview will be available here shortly: www.radioideaxme.com Nym Technologies comment: "Data harvesting has dominated Silicon Valley business models over the past decade and has rapidly become the norm for monetizing online activity. Understanding and predicting user behaviour is now core to both old and new media businesses, for example, from the Financial Times to Facebook, who famously sold its users out to its commercial clients like Cambridge Analytica. These data-driven models, collectively known as surveillance capitalism, have produced giant tech monopolies that oversee an unprecedented system of control. Governments, meanwhile, are fighting to preserve centralized power and manage polarized populations by heavily censoring and controlling the internet, fragmenting it even further. In this climate, the prospect of having any privacy online is disintegrating. It is important to realize just how lacking current technology is with regards to maintaining privacy. A private messenger like Signal might encrypt a message’s contents, but metadata identifying the timing, sender and receiver is accessible by powerful third parties that monitor the internet and can readily identify users. In this world of big data, this information is in many ways more valuable than the contents of messages — it can be used by sophisticated and ubiquitous analytic systems to determine the nature of your social relationships and thus predict your personal characteristics and preferences. The necessary technology to guarantee online privacy has remained underdeveloped until now for reasons related to limitations in computing, networking, research and funding. We believe that it is now possible to overcome these limits and deploy technology that provides strong privacy guarantees, avoids trusted third parties, and is resistant to surveillance. How Nym can make the internet private: Nym itself is neutral to the technology interfacing with it, providing an open-ended anonymous overlay network that works to irreversibly disguise patterns in internet traffic. The more activity on the network, the more private it becomes — and so users have safety in numbers, just like in the real world. Nym improves on existing alternatives via mix-networking. The Sphinx packet format renders all data packets a uniform size, the traffic is mixed probabilistically with timing obfuscation, cover traffic is added, and multiple hops ensure users do not have to trust a single node. This mixing defeats the kinds of traffic-analysis attacks that can deanonymize packets on VPNs, Tor and I2P. In addition, Nym uses blockchain technology to decentralize the operations of the mixnet so that the network has no centralized points of failure. A major obstacle for any decentralized network is assembling real-world resources to run nodes. Tor and I2P’s volunteer model works but has limitations. With the logistical complexity of finding trusted and reliable volunteers, global reach is difficult: volunteers tend to be centralized in wealthy Western countries, with the majority of Tor relays in places like Germany and the US. We think incentives can fix this problem. Nym uses anonymous authentication credentials based on the Coconut signature scheme to enable privacy-enhanced data transfer and decentralized identity. Nym credentials can embed the data needed for a given service (including zero-knowledge proofs of private data), and these credentials are validated in a decentralized and public manner without linking a user to the service they want to access. And importantly, Nym is sustainable because it uses incentives to decentralize and maintain the quality of service of the network. Inspired by Bitcoin, Nym’s breakthrough proof-of-stake system rewards nodes for mixing traffic rather than solving arbitrary merkle puzzles. Instead of a proof-of-work system, Nym node operators are rewarded for proof of mixing, ensuring privacy for all." In each and every one of us, there's the capacity to do amazing things - Ray Zahab Ray Zahab and Stefano Gregoretti will run 2,200km (1,375mile) across Namibia with the primary goal of using satellite technology to bring their expedition into classrooms, and classrooms onto the expedition. Join them on instagram, Facebook and their official website www.transnamibia.com ! EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS The condition Ray has that I can't pronounce and that he doesn't think about A lot of the great things we do are quick decisions How risk-taking is a forgotten quality Origins of ImpossibletoPossible (i2P) The most difficult things we do in our lives are very relative to us as individuals Crossing the world's deserts and the Trans Namibia Expedition ABOUT RAY ZAHAB Canadian Adventurer & Founder of impossible2Possible (i2P) Challenge. Distance. Discovery On November 1, 2006, former "pack a day smoker" Ray Zahab and two friends, Charlie Engle and Kevin Lin, both accomplished runners, set out on an expedition to cross the Sahara Desert by foot. 111 days and 7,500 kms after leaving the coast of Senegal, Africa they completed their journey by stepping into the Red Sea. This epic expedition had the trio running an average of 70kms a day without a single day of rest. National Geographic tracked the expedition by web, as well as the documentary film 'Running The Sahara', produced by Matt Damon and directed by Academy Award winner James Moll, was created in an effort to raise awareness for the drinking water crisis in North Africa. After witnessing and experiencing this water crisis in North Africa, Ray decided to leverage his future adventures to help raise awareness and funding for causes, like this one, that he supports and believes in. In 2007, Ray ran the three coastal trails of Canada back to back and virtually non-stop, for a total distance of 400 kms. The Akshayuk Pass on Baffin Island, East Coast Trail Newfoundland and West Coast Trail in British Columbia. Motivated by the Sahara run - Ray conceptualized the Canada ONExONE Run in May 2008. Along with a team of runners, Ray ran an average 80 kms per day in each of Canada's 13 Provinces and Territories in 13 days. School visits were arranged along the way, students participated and communities became engaged in many of the issues which ONExONE endeavors to address to help improve the wellbeing of the world's children. Youth Ambassadors are selected from around the globe then participate, at no cost, in all aspects of the expedition, from logistics and running to creating educational content and team support. All of the i2P Youth Expeditions have included various challenge based initiatives through an Experiential Learning program, in which thousands of students participate as active 'team members' during the expeditions, from classrooms all over the world. This program and its technology is also provided at no cost to the students or schools participating. Since its inception, i2P Youth Expeditions have included 9 grueling expeditions; Baffin Island, Tunisia, the Amazon, Bolivia, India, Botswana, Utah, Peru and Chile. The programs and expeditions are 100% free of cost. In 2009, Ray and two other Canadians, Kevin Vallely and Richard Weber, broke the world speed record for an unsupported expedition by a team to the South Pole. In the process, Ray trekked this traditional route from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole, a distance of 1,100 kms, solely on foot and snowshoes, without the use of skis. Students from all over North America joined the team on a daily basis, a program provided through impossible2Possible, as the trio continued their southern trek. The students received daily communications and actively took part in every step of the trek. Essentially becoming "teammates" of the expedition, and teammates of the Guinness World Record. In early 2011, Ray ran the length of the "driest desert on Earth", the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. Here he ran 1,200 kms in 20 days with minimal daily re-supply and with his camping gear on his back. Thousands of students joined this journey, again under his i2P organization, via live web and video conferencing. In summer 2011, Ray and Will Laughlin ran from the north park boundary to the south park boundary of Death Valley National Park, totally off-road. The 237 km run saw temps reaching over 120 degrees F. Beginning June 23rd 2013, Ray ran over 2,000km across Mongolia and the Gobi Desert. He was accompanied by both a film crew and photographer who recorded not only the expedition, but also created an robust film archive sharing the stories of the people and culture of Mongolia. This marks the beginning of the "To The Edge" series chronicling the stories and people and that Ray comes into to contact with on expeditions...situations and people that occur when at the edges of the Earth! In Winter 2014 Ray completed his 4th unsupported crossing of Baffin Island on the Akshayuk Pass. Ray has also found the time to write 2 successful books about his life and adventures. Running for My Life published in 2007 and Ray's second book, geared at youth readers, Running to Extremes, which recently became a National Best-Seller in Canada. In addition to being an adventurer, youth advocate and runner, Ray speaks around the world at events such as TED, IOC World Conference, Idea City, The Economist World in 2010 and 2011, World Affairs Council, and numerous Apple Distinguished Educator events internationally. He has been interviewed and appeared on several talk and news programs including CNNi, The Hour, CBC, CTV, BBC, Jay Leno, and Discovery. Outside of his own organization Ray further dedicates portions of his time as a previous board of Directors - now an advisor to the Ryan's Well Foundation, he is an Athletic Ambassador/board member of the ONExONE.org, and is a representative of SpreadTheNet. Ray was the recipient of the ONExONE Difference Award in 2007, and the Torchbearers Award in 2010. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Canadian Geographical Society. In spring 2012, Ray was invited by H.E. Tsogtbaatar Damdin (Minister of Environment, Mongolia) to join their Internal Advisory Committee.. He continues today with life as an adventurer and as a volunteer with impossible2Possible. 'Running The Sahara' would begin a lifelong journey of discovery. A journey of learning that some of the largest barriers to success are the ones we put upon ourselves. By breaking these down, Ray has learned that we are all capable of achieving truly extraordinary things. Riccardo Spagni, Lead Maintainer of Monero, discusses their unique approach to blockchain privacy, in depth. Many cryptocurrencies are centralized, and some disregard blockchain privacy entirely, in order to attract users. Monero aims to be completely decentralized and open-source, and yet still places a high priority on privacy. They accomplish this by focusing on four different aspects of transaction privacy: obscuring where the transaction is going to through stealth addresses; obscuring where the transaction is coming from through ring signatures; encrypting the amounts of the transactions; and obscuring the IP address that the transaction is coming from through an I2P protocol.

He’s faced death more than once on his adventures, but ask him which was the toughest and he’ll always answer “the last one.” It’s always the freshest in his mind. Ray believes in the possible and started a foundation called Impossible to Possible. i2P brings his expeditions to classrooms, sharing his journeys and his lessons with kids in an interactive way. Zahab uses these experiences to inspire kids to see possibilities in their own lives. He wasn’t always adventurous, hear how he went from a pack a day smoker afraid to take a chance to the man he is today, and how you can do it too. Lessons: 1. We overcomplicate things; the first step you take doesn’t have to be monumental.

 2. Take a chance and you will be surprised where life will take you.

Dumb Nerds: Comedians Talking About Smart Topics They're Too Dumb For

Today we have the lovely and hilarious Cara Meyers on to talk about the not-so-lovely and not-so-funny Dark Web! Cara and Cassi are deeply curious about the Dark Net but have yet to venture on to it. The Dark Web is a surprisingly large place online that people can ensure anonymity. That doesn’t stop them from talking about how to get on it through sites like Freenet, I2P and Tor. They also get into what goes on the Dark Web like buying drugs, illegal pornography, hiring hitmen, anonymously crowdfunding assassinations, acquiring and spending bitcoins, getting malware, gambling and finding out deep, dark secrets. They even talk about one of the infamous Dark Web leaders, Ross Ulbricht, also known as Dread Pirate Roberts, and how he revolutionized the dark web by being a Darknet market operator with his dark web business, “The Silk Road”. He had a net worth of $28.5 million before he was caught by the FBI and is now spending the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole. Is the punishment too harsh? Carrie and Cassi think so. They also get off topic and talk about anarchy and their gripes with money, their deep twisted love for true crime (shout out to Sword and Scale, True Crime Brewery and My Favorite Murder), comedy and why everyone, including the US government, should go to therapy.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We have a special guest host with us today, we shall call him 'Tim' because he prefers to remain somewhat anonymous. He is an 'unofficial' expert on the deep web / the darknet. Did you know the internet has layers!? 1. The Internet: This is the easy one. It’s the common Internet everyone uses to read silly Facebook statuses, visit blogs, and read/watch the news. Just consider this the “ordinary” Internet. 2. The Deep Web: The deep web is a subset of the Internet that is not indexed by the major search engines. This means that you have to visit those places directly instead of being able to search for them. So there aren’t search engines to get you there, but they’re waiting if you have an address. The Deep Web is largely there simply because the Internet is too large for search engines to cover completely. 3. The Darknet: The Darknet (also called Dark Web) is a subset of the Deep Web that is not only not indexed, but that also requires something special to be able to access it, e.g., specific proxying software or authentication to gain access. The Dark Web often sits on top of additional sub-networks, such as Tor, I2P, and Freenet, and is often associated with criminal activity of various degrees, including buying and selling drugs, pornography, gambling, etc. While the Dark Web is definitely used for those things more than the standard Internet or the Deep Web, there are many legitimate uses for the Dark Web as well.

Badwater Tony Portera to me is the "real deal." While I fantasize doing big runs, Tony is out there making it happen. You'll hear him say he's not anybody special, but I beg to differ. He's fun to talk to, has a great story about his journey into running, has great things to say about running ultramarathons, someone I see as a wonderful ambassador of the ultra community, he's super encouraging, and even offers some advice to help improve on the next ultra. This is Part 1. Tony Facts: White Plains New York Husband and father of two. Lawyer in commercial real estate Dabbler of ultra running and has ran and continues to run prestigious events such like the Badwater 135, Jackpot 100, and Umstead 100. He has participated in the Badwater 135 six times. 2015 will be seventh. Running Background: Tony got into ultras by stumbling on it and deciding to try it. Started out soccer in high school, college, and after in law school with local club teams. After graduating from law school, life happened, and at one point weighed 210 pounds. Out of shape, drinking a lot of beer, and watching football and other sports. Got together with some guys who convinced him to do a local 4 miler or 5k. He said “Running is stupid!” He did more of these types of runs and was eventually persuaded to do a marathon. He said “This is stupid. If running 4 miles is stupid, this is even dumber!” His first marathon was the 2004 Twin Cities Marathon. Completed it in over 4 hours and told himself he’d never do another one again. But 25 marathons later, he kept trying to convince himself to stop running. His biggest mistake, was after reading Dean Karnazes’ book Ultramarathon Man where he learned about ultra marathons. He was blown away and said “If 4 miles is stupid, and running a marathon is even more stupid. Then ultra runners gotta be idiots!” And Tony convinced himself to do a 60k. Loving the Sport & Better Health In ultras marathon, Tony loved that he was able to show up to the start late, finished up on the same day, and head back to your car without a hassle. This plus getting in better shape made it more appealing. Eventually dropped 50-60 lbs lighter from his former weight in 2001. He enjoys the runs and loves the community, but still sometimes tells himself that “He’ll never do it again.” He uses these events as a way to learn more about himself. To find out what he can and can’t do. "You’ll never run the same race twice. You’ll experience different things and thoughts each time.” Tony’s Preparation: Work on nutrition on a regular basis. Prepare nutritionally, mentally, put in the work in training runs. Roughly 80-90 miles a week including the speed training and long runs. Typical Training Week (To build miles and speed. Doing about 74 miles of training). Monday a.m. - 25 miles.Tuesday - 8 miles.Wednesday - 10 mile tempo, 3 mile warm up. 4 miles at 6:55 pace.Thursday - 8 miles easy recovery.Friday - 12 miles interval: 3 mile warm up. 2 miles at 7:10 pace. recover 1 mile, six 400 mile repeats, and recover jog.Saturday - Off.Sunday - 12 miles. Long run may increase over time. This is a week typically to Tony and should not be used as a template for everybody else. Everybody is different. On Getting Coached:Tony is currently working with Zach Bitter on training and nutrition and has also worked with Ray Zahab. Recommends getting a coach for endurance events. Mentions:Film: Running on the Sun More Tony: Tony loves to help see folks enter into the ultra community for the first time. The Vermont 50 mile race was his first 50. Loves seeing people go out there. Thinks 50 miles is a great distance to get done in one day and it is very challenging Believer in drawing from others, especially folks who have experienced what you are trying to do. Fueling and hydration advice:Drinking to thirst.Keep trying different things. Learn something is always a success. Quote:"People may go out there and try and have a negative impression in their mind, but there are so many positives to take whether perceived negative or not. It’s often times the 2nd or 3rd try that you start to understand what you’re doing and love it more." ~ Tony Portera   Advice:Ray Zahab, founder of  Impossible To Possible (aka I2P) tells Tony “Ultra running is 90% mental. The other 10% is all in your head.” Quote:"Our best moments are found when we are at our weakest.” Catch Tony Portera If You Can: www.irunultras.com IRunUltrascom on Facebook On Twitter: @irunultras   Visit www.vinnietortorich.com to learn about Vinnie Tortorich’s NSNG Lifestyle.
