One approach to testing the reliability, or lack thereof, of the Gospel accounts of the Resurrection is the "minimal facts" approach by which we look at only those facts that are undisputed among even the most critical scholars. But are there good reasons to move beyond the "minimal facts" to "maximal data"?              Resources mentioned in this episode:  Minimal Facts vs. Maximal Data playlist on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIp6_r9Vga4&list=PLe1tMOs8ARn0sWTtdaXPg8oMRqmYnhU6M   Lydia McGrew on facebook https://www.facebook.com/lydiamcgrewauthor/  Lydia McGrew Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/@LydiaMcGrewChannel  Lydia McGrew on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/1MVo3rKGvGTKGRT2HztvQE  Lydia McGrew on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B073V1ZP1Y   Lydia McGrew website https://lydiamcgrew.com/     Were the Gospels Anonymous? Anonymous gospels episode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auJbD0IN6qk     Facebook https://www.facebook.com/abdumurray  Instagram https://www.instagram.com/abdumurray12  Twitter https://twitter.com/abdumurray  TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@abdumurray    Keep in touch with Abdu and be notified when he is in a town near you by signing up for his monthly newsletter at https://embracethetruth.org/sign-up/.     Embrace the Truth is a donor-supported ministry that seeks to answer PEOPLE, not questions. What benefit is there in studying New Testament scholars who do not affirm the resurrection of Jesus? According to our guest this week, resurrection scholar Dr. Gary Habermas, who has spent the majority of his academic career doing this very thing, much in every way. This week and next on the Profile Gary discusses with us volume one of his life's labor of love, On the Resurrection: Vol 1: Evidences. It is over a thousand pages and there is arguably nothing like it out there today. Gary's magnum opus ontains an unparalleled, extensive commentary about what skeptical scholars affirm about the Gospel accounts and the New Testament in general regarding the deity, death, and resurrection of Jesus.Gary Habermas (Ph.D., Michigan State University) is a distinguished Research Professor at Liberty University Graduate School. He has dedicated his professional life to the examination of the relevant historical, philosophical, and theological issues surrounding the death and resurrection of Jesus. Truth Tribe with Douglas Groothuis

I am the resurrection and the life—Jesus Christ, John 11. I.    The Significance of the Resurrection of Jesus A.    Unique among religions of the world; one religion based on the resurrection of its divine founder B.    The resurrection in Jesus' teaching: he promised it several times C.    Atonement requires resurrection Herein we see the organic connection between Christ's incarnation, death, and resurrection. God's raising Jesus from the dead is not only a ratification to us of the efficacy of Christ's atoning death; it is a necessary consequence of it. For by his substitutionary death Christ fully satisfied divine justice. The penalty of death having been fully paid, Christ can no more remain dead than a criminal who has fully served his sentence can remain imprisoned. Punishment cannot justly continue; justice demands his release. Thus, Christ's resurrection is both a necessary consequence and a ratification of his satisfaction of divine justice [Craig, William Lane. Atonement and the Death of Christ (p. 229). Baylor University Press. Kindle Edition.] II.    Theism and the Resurrection A.    Natural theology increases the probability of the resurrection B.    Argument for God from science and philosophy. See Douglas Groothuis, Christian Apologetics, chapters 9-19 III.    Are Miracles Credible? A.    What is a biblical miracle? 1.    Not a violation of natural law 2.    Supplementation of nature by divine agency B.    David Hume's argument against miracles: In-principle argument: irrational to believe in miracles  1.    If it always more likely that a supposed miracles is really a misinterpreted natural event 2.    Response a.    General probability of miracles is low b.    Conditional probability (given theism) is another matter; consider NT reliability and natural theology c.    Miracles are not delusions of pre-scientific fools; they presuppose some knowledge of the natural workings of nature.  Moreover, if there ever were men who did not know the laws of nature at all they would have no idea of a miracle and feel no particular interest in one if it were performed before them. Nothing can seem extraordinary until you have discovered what is ordinary—C. S. Lewis, Miracles. IV.    Minimal Facts and Maximal Result: Resurrection A.    The minimal facts method: find undisputed facts from which to argue for a biblical claim (such as the resurrection) B.    Four minimal facts 1.    Death by crucifixion; no possibility of swooning2.    Burial in a known tomb 3.    The empty tomb; a necessary, but not sufficient condition for the resurrection; women Jews and Romans would have had a vested interest in producing dead body of Jesus, but we have no record of it. 4.    Postmortem appearances of Jesus  a.    In the Gospels, women see Jesus first; unexpected, given low status of women's testimony at that time b.    Paul's early witness (I Cor. 15:3-8) C.    Other well-established facts 1.    Transformation of the disciples 2.    The early worship of Jesus by monotheistic Jews (Larry Hurtado) 3.    Circumstantial evidence (part of historical reasoning) a.    Baptism presupposed resurrection (Romans 6:4-5). b.    Lord's supper or Eucharist (1 Corinthians 11:23-26) V.    Alternative Naturalistic Theories A.    Need several different naturalistic theories to cover all the known facts. B.    No good naturalistic explanations for four minimal facts. C.    Disciples had neither the means nor the motive to steal the body. D.    The Jewish establishment and Roman government would not take the body, leave the tomb empty and let the story of Jesus' resurrection become popular because they conspired to crucify Jesus. E.    Hallucination theory 1.    Too many appearances for hallucinations 2.    Hallucinations are not group a phenomena.  VI.    Jesus Christ is Risen Indeed! A.    13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself. 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God—2 Cor. 4:13-15. B.    Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain—I Cor. 15:58. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the central claim of Christian theology. As the apostle Paul put it in 1 Corinthians 15:14, “if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.” But is belief in Christ's resurrection a matter of faith only, or can it also be demonstrated historically? That is the question I ask Dr. Gary Habermas in this episode of the Influence Podcast. I'm George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain,” writes the apostle Paul (1 Cor. 15:14), situating the resurrection as the central claim of Christianity—the foundation for the entire biblical worldview. But why is it so important? In this episode of White Horse Inn, Eric Landry, Justin Holcomb, Bob Hiller, and Doug Powell discuss Christ's resurrection as a unique claim among world religions. They also work through “The Minimal Facts” put forward by Gary Habermas, equipping listeners with an agreed-upon baseline for proving the historicity of the resurrection and evaluating objections.

Skeptics who disbelieve in the Bible will often propose different reasons for why the New Testament was written. One popular objection suggests "legendary" information crept into the texts we have today and there is just no way to tell fact from fiction. Others say that the Gospels contain real historical information but that the disciples and others were simply mistaken about Jesus' resurrection. They thought Jesus appeared to them, but there is no way to tell if He really did or not. New Testament historian and scholar Dr. Gary Habermas, our guest this week on Apologetics Profile, has heard most every popular objection ever given about Jesus rising from the dead. He has debated and been interviewed by atheists and skeptics and has spent most of his professional career compiling solid historical evidence for the resurrection. Here on part two of our conversation with Gary, he provides us with a myriad of reasons why we can know that what we have in the pages of the Gospels is historically trustworthy and authentic. Dr. Gary Habermas is a Distinguished Research Professor of Apologetics and Philosophy and chairman of the department of philosophy at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. He received a Doctor of Philosophy degree (1976) from Michigan State University in history and philosophy of religion with a thesis entitled "The resurrection of Jesus: a rational inquiry," and previously a master's degree (1973) from the University of Detroit in philosophical theology. He has specialized in cataloging and communicating trends among scholars in the field of historical Jesus and New Testament studies. In 1985, Habermas debated the then-atheist and evidentialist philosopher, Antony Flew, on the question of Jesus' resurrection as a literal and historical/physical event, before 3,000 attendees. Five philosophers and five professional debate judges judged the debate. Of the philosophers who judged on the content of the debate, four voted that Habermas won and the other was undecided.... [Before his death in 2010, Dr. Flew converted from atheism to theism.] In his memoir Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus, Nabeel Qureshi [a former Muslim] relates how Habermas was influential in his conversion, and describes him as looking like "a mix between Santa Claus and an offensive lineman." A burgeoning challenge for Christians today is the increasing criticism from skeptics and atheists about the historical reliability of the Gospels, especially the resurrection of Jesus. While some atheists and skeptics, such as New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman, affirm Jesus really did exist, almost all either deny or doubt that Jesus actually rose bodily from the grave and afterward appeared to eye witnesses. Since most of us are not New Testament historians or scholars, we might feel ill-equipped to address such criticisms. This is where our guest on the next two editions of Apologetics Profile provides us with a basic framework for answering our skeptical critics about the historicity of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Dr. Gary Habermas is a New Testament scholar and historian. His life's work has been compiling historical information surrounding Jesus' resurrection and distilling his data into a series of 'minimal facts' that the vast majority credentialed scholars in the fields of antiquities, ancient history, New Testament criticism and historical Jesus studies accept. These are some 'minimal facts' on which nearly all Christians scholars, secular academics and even atheist professors agree. This is the 'minimal facts' approach; a kind of historical "Roman's Road" that provides very basic historical information in "headline" format for helping lay and scholar alike to begin conversations with skeptics who doubt the resurrection. These 'minimal facts' on the the resurrection of Jesus are certainly not the only historical data that to which Christians may appeal. This 'common ground' approach, however, may be seen as a helpful starting place for believers and non-believers to begin a discussion. This episode of Apologetics Profile is part one of a two-part podcast. In this episode, Dr. Habermas sits down with Watchman Fellowship's Staff Apologist, Daniel Ray, and outlines the origin and development of the minimal facts approach. Dr. Gary Habermas is a Distinguished Research Professor of Apologetics and Philosophy and chairman of the department of philosophy at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. In this episode, we look at the historical fact of the crucifixion, and the fact that the disciples at the very least "believed" that Jesus had risen from the dead. After evaluating much of the data surrounding the reliability of the New Testament, we can take a look at a famous argument called the "minimal facts approach". This method, developed by Gary Habermas, uses only the data that basically all historians agree upon, and shows that the best explanation is that Jesus rose from the dead. In this episode, we go over the methodology, and why this method is useful. For more from Jon Topping, check out www.jontopping.com for his blog, podcast, articles, and other videos. How might we persuade people of the truth of Jesus' Resurrection? Must we appeal only to the divine authority of Scripture and hope that people will agree? Not according to Dr. Habermas, who explains how his "minimal facts approach" (which relies only on historical data agreed by the vast majority of professional scholars in the field) bypasses such appeals to authority, and has the power to persuade - through logic and historical reasoning alone - that Jesus did in fact rise from the Dead." Was Jesus a real person? Did he actually exist? Is there evidence that Jesus was a real historical person? Yes, Jesus was indeed a real person. And, yes, there is plenty of evidence for this. In fact, the evidences for this is overwhelming. Jesus being a real historical person has not ever been in question throughout history until very recently. Even religious skeptics throughout the ages have accepted the reality of a man named Jesus that lived in Palestine in the first-century. This is part 3 of 3 of a series on the historical case for Jesus' resurrection. In part 2, Evan Minton used The Principles/Criteria Of Authenticity that he laid out in part 1 to come to the conclusion that 5 propositions are historically true; (1) Jesus died by crucifixion, (2) Jesus was found empty the following Sunday morning, (3) His disciples sincerely believed that Jesus appeared to them alive after His death, (4) a church persecutor named Paul converted on the basis of what He perceived to be an appearance of the risen Jesus, and (5) that a skeptic named James converted to Christianity on the basis of what he perceived to be an appearance of the risen Jesus. How does one best explain these 5 historical facts? Did Jesus rise from the dead? Maybe, but perhaps we should see if a natural explanation works first before we conclude that. In this episode, Evan Minton comes to the best explanation by means of a process of elimination. He eliminates all of the bad explanations until only one remains. In the previous episode, Mr. Minton explained the historical methodology he would be taking in defending certain facts about Jesus as actually being true, historical facts. He explained that he would be employing "The criteria of authenticity" to The New Testament just as non-Christian historians and scholars do in their examination of the historical Jesus. He then went on to argue that the historical Jesus believed himself to be divine. However, why should we believe him? After all, anyone can claim to be God, but that doesn't make it true. This is where the resurrection comes into play. If Jesus died and rose from the dead, then that is pretty good evidence that He was telling the truth. God would not raise someone who committed identity theft against him, knowing that doing so would validate those claims. In this episode, Evan Minton defends "The 5 Minimal Facts" surrounding the death of Jesus upon which an inference to the historicty of His miraculous resurrection can be made. The minimal facts are (1) Jesus died by crucifixion. (2) Jesus' tomb was found empty the following Sunday morning, (3) His disciples sincerely believed that Jesus appeared to them after His death, (4) A church persecutor named Saul Of Tarsus converted to Christianity on the basis of what He perceived to be an appearance of the risen Jesus, and (5) That a skeptic named James converted to Christianity on the basis of what he perceived to be an appearance of the risen Jesus. How do we know these facts are facts? Listen to this episode to hear the evidence. Though the thought is indeed Wright's (pp. 690-1 in The Resurrection of the Son of God), nevertheless, this particular way of putting Wright's point is due to William Lane Craig (e.g. in this video clip: https://www.reasonablefaith.org/videos/short-videos/why-is-the-hallucination-hypothesis-of-the-resurrection-implausible/).

The number of Christians that know what the word apologetics means is growing, thanks primarily to technology. But many don't understand that there are different approaches to defending your faith. While some of these approaches overlap, some have important distinctions that affect the way we should defend and commend the faith. This episode explores the differences between various approaches to apologetics.

In this lecture, Dr. Gary Habermas shares his "Minimal Facts" approach to defending the resurrection, an argument that uses premises that even skeptics would concede as reasonable to build a decisive case for the resurrection. Dr. Gary Habermas has penned dozens of books and over a hundred articles. He has given over 1500 lectures in universities, seminaries, and colleges all over the world and is 'Distinguished Research Professor and Chair' in the Department of Philosophy and Theology at Liberty University, where he has taught for 30 years. Christian philosopher and historian Gary Habermas has been at the forefront of the ‘minimal facts’ approach as evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. He debates the commonly agreed facts with agnostic New Testament scholar James Crossley and they discuss whether the miracle of the resurrection can be a historically valid explanation of the evidence. We are joined by one of the world's leading experts in Resurrection Studies, Dr. Gary Habermas, Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Theology at Liberty University, for an in-depth discussion on the historical case for the resurrection of Jesus from the Dead. How might we persuade people of the truth of Jesus' Resurrection? Must we appeal only to the divine authority of Scripture and hope that people will agree? Not according to Dr. Habermas, who explains how his "minimal facts approach" (which relies only on historical data agreed by the vast majority of professional scholars in the field) bypasses such appeals authority, and has the power to persuade - through logic and historical reasoning alone - that Jesus did in fact rise from the Dead. SummaryI share the "Minimal Facts Argument" proposed by Dr. Gary Habermas and Dr. Mike Licona as the foundational evidence for my belief Jesus was raised from the dead. These "Minimal Facts" are well accepted among New Testament scholars, even those scholars who are not Christians. After stating the facts, I explain how they arrived at those facts, and I close the episode talking about what Jesus resurrection means for Christians in eternity.Minimal FactsJesus died by crucifixion. His disciples had experiences, as individuals and groups, in which they believed they saw the risen Jesus.Jesus' resurrection was preached from the very beginning of Christianity, and his disciples were willing to die.Paul, initially an enemy of Christianity, also had an experience in which he believed he saw the risen Jesus, and this changed his life.ResourcesThe Historical Facts Argument for the Resurrection - Dr. Gary HabermasMinimal Facts and the Historical Jesus - Dr. Mike LiconaBear's BiscuitThe Case for Christ (Movie)The Case for Christ (Book)A Bear in the Woods"If you could have one superpower, what would it be?"MusicMusic by MichaelKobrin from Pixabay (Intro/Outro)Music by JuliusH from Pixabay (A Bear in the Woods)
