Are the gospels legendary accounts of a normal person blown up to mythical proportions? Are they entertaining novels about a beloved teacher? Or, are they reliable accounts of the life and teaching of Jesus of Nazareth? What we think about the literary genre of the gospels matters for how we interpret them. In today's episode I discuss some of the work by Richard Burridge who argues that gospels are not just legends but biographies of a real person. In this episode I also discuss the work of Michael Licona. I highly recommend his book Why Are There Differences in the Gospels? published by Oxford University Press.

In this episode, Mikel Del Rosario and Michael Licona discuss the challenge of Bible contradictions, focusing on why the Gospels tell the same story differently. Discover how compositional devices in Greco-Roman biographies (like spotlighting and transferral) can help us appreciate what God has given us in Gospel texts and see that differences do not always equal contradictions. Send us a textWe sit down with New Testament scholar Dr. Michael Licona ( @MikeLiconaOfficial ) to discuss his book Jesus, Contradicted: Why the Gospels Tell the Same Story Differently. Dr. Licona tackles one of the most common objections to the reliability of the Gospels: their apparent discrepancies. Instead of forcing strained harmonizations, Licona explains how the Gospels fit within the genre of ancient biography, allowing for narrative flexibility. He compares the Gospel accounts with the works of Plutarch and other ancient sources, showing how common literary techniques of the time account for differences in reporting. We'll also explore how these differences align with the doctrines of divine inspiration and inerrancy of Scripture. Don't miss this fascinating conversation that brings clarity to the complexities of the Gospel narratives!Book: https://a.co/d/5qw5mzB
Does the Bible have contradictions that undermine it's reliability? This is a big question apologists have dealt with since the 2nd century. In Jesus, Contradicted, Dr. Michael Licona argues that the genre of ancient biography, to which the Gospels belong, actually allows biographers to be flexible in how they report events, construct a narrative, and make an argument. We go in-depth on the unique approach in his book and consider some of the BIG objections raised against it. Enjoy! It's Thursday, November 30th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Israel-Hamas ceasefire continues Israel and Hamas, the Muslim terrorist group, continue their temporary ceasefire for a hostage-for-prisoner exchange. Coverage of the recent Gaza conflict has overlooked the plight of the Christian minority there. International Christian Concern reports that Christianity in Gaza dates back to the 4th century A.D. With so much conflict in the area in recent times, Gazan Christians are known for their operation of some of the best medical institutions as well as educational and business groups. However, the Christian population in the area is steadily dwindling. Christians who stay in Gaza experience life as second-class citizens. Those who convert to Christianity from Islam face persecution and even death. Muslims in Gaza coming to Christ In other Gaza news, hundreds of Muslims in the region are reportedly coming to Christ. Michael Licona, a Christian professor and president of Risen Jesus Inc., shared news from underground Christian ministries in Palestine. He said, “Over the past two days, we have ministered to hundreds of fathers who have lost most, if not all, of their children in the war. … As we moved these men to safety, we … began to read the Bible to them — sharing the way of peace through Jesus. … They have come back to us to learn more from God's Word and are asking how to follow Jesus.” In Matthew 11:28, Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Could federal agencies be restrained? In the United States, the Supreme Court is considering a case that could limit the power of federal agencies. Conservative justices appear ready to limit the Securities and Exchange Commission which has been able to enforce securities laws in-house instead of through the courts. Chief Justice John Roberts, who sometimes sides with the conservatives, commented, “The extent of impact of government agencies on daily life today is enormously more significant than it was 50 years ago.” The case is one of two others aimed at scaling back the power of the administrative state. Americans gave 11% less in 2022 than 2008 Giving USA reports that Americans only gave 1.7% of their disposable income to charity last year. It's the lowest percentage since 1995. Americans gave about $500 billion in 2022. When adjusted for inflation, that's an 11% drop in giving and the first drop since 2008's Great Recession. Educational organizations received 10% less in donations followed by environmental groups (9% less) and human services organizations (8% less). Religious organizations only saw a 2.6% decrease. Pro-life states helped save 32,000 babies since Roe overturned The Institute of Labor Economics released a report on the effects of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade last year. The study found, “Our primary analysis indicates that in the first six months of 2023, births rose by an average of 2.3 percent in states enforcing total abortion bans compared to a control group of states where abortion … remained protected, amounting to approximately 32,000 additional annual births resulting from abortion bans.” Life expectancy rose in 2022 to 77.5 years The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports U.S. life expectancy increased in 2022 to 77.5 years. That's a 1.1-year increase compared to 2021. But it is still down from 78.8 years in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. U.S. life expectancy has largely plateaued over the last decade during the rise of drug overdose deaths and suicides. America's life expectancy is lower than other comparable countries and did not rebound as fast from the pandemic like France, Italy, Spain, and Sweden did. 5.2% increase in GDP in third quarter The U.S. Commerce Department reports that the Gross Domestic Product increased at an annual rate of 5.2% during the third quarter of 2023. Economic growth beat expectations of 4.9%. The growth represents increases in consumer spending, private inventory investment, exports, and government spending. John Bunyan's 395th birthday celebration And finally, this week is the anniversary of the birth of John Bunyan. He was baptized on November 30, 1628 and is thought to have been born around the 28th in Elstow, England. Bunyan had little formal education and worked as a tinker, someone who repaired tin cooking ware and utensils. Nonetheless, he authored over 60 books and had a profound influence on Christianity, especially through his book The Pilgrim's Progress. Bunyan's writings have been translated into over 200 languages. Watch the animated 30-minute video The John Bunyan Story from Torchlighters with your kids or grandkids. He reminds us of the apostles in Acts 4:13, “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. On a groundbreaking episode of Mormon Book Reviews, Evangelical Steven Pynakker welcomes back on Josh Gehly author of the just released book "Witnessing Miracles: Historical Evidence for the Resurrection and the Book of Mormon". Josh is an Evangelist of the Church of Jesus Christ. He is a big fan of Christian apologists William Lane Craig, Gary Habermas, and Michael Licona. They are renowned experts on making a case for the historicity of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Josh uses the tools provided by these Christian thinkers to make an even stronger case for the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. Evanglicals and Restorationists be prepared to have your minds blown! Check out the link below to purchase. #JoshGehly #WitnessingMiracles #ChurchofJesusChrist
Do Christians have good historical reasons to put our faith in the resurrection of Jesus? Can we really know what happened 2,000 years ago? No one doubts the works of Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar or the history written about them, so what makes the historicity of Jesus so special? And what do non-Christian scholars say about the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus? If anyone knows the answers to these questions, it's New Testament scholar Dr. Michael Licona! His seminal work, The Resurrection of Jesus: A New Historiographical Approach, has been praised by many as the most thorough and useful tool to those looking for an in-depth study of the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. Mike currently serves as Associate Professor in Theology at Houston Christian University and president of Risen Jesus, Inc. In this special midweek episode of 'I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist,' he sits down with Frank to discuss the following topics as they relate to Jesus and the resurrection: problems with postmodernist history the uncertainty of historical knowledge what is a historical fact? the tools and rules of historical research how our worldview affects how we study history objections to the resurrection of Jesus the intersecting philosophies of science, history, and theology This is a fascinating and in-depth discussion, and you'll definitely learn something new! Cries for unity are common among evangelicals. "Who cares what it says on the sign, as long as you love Jesus," say many who long for a church without unnecessary divisions that can sometimes cause such pain within the body of Christ. Amen! But, while it is tragic to see a lack of unity where it should be had, it is certainly tragic to pretend theological unity where it cannot exist. How should Christians think about this? Jude will help us with that answer. From the speaker: I AM THE SUM OF MY PARTS . . . God has moved in my life through a number of powerful men and women of God from whom I have benefited greatly. There is nothing new under the sun, as it is said. For that reason, much of what you hear in these lectures is not unique to me. Most of it was likely gleaned from other sources. I want to be transparent about that and share my sources. In terms of biblical scholarship, I have been blessed by the work of Harold Hunter (my father), Craig Keener, David Allen, Malcom Yarnell, Tom Schriner, Johnathan Pritchett (with whom I co-host Trinity Radio), F.F. Bruce, Adam Harwood (with whom I have co-authored), Steve Gregg (with whom I have worked), and Bruce Ware. As for Christian apologetics, William Lane Craig (with whom I have lectured), Michael Licona (a personal friend), Gary Habermas, Norman Geisler, J.P. Moreland, William Dembski, Michael J. Murray, James White, Alvin Plantinga, and a host of others have impacted my thinking. Because I have been so impressed with the structure, organization, and delivery of his own audio commentary, I personally made request to Steve Gregg (who has served as a visiting professor for Trinity) that I might follow his model. In fact, he was delighted with the idea that I might largely follow his teaching outline. Why then, with so much great scholarship already available, would I want to add my voice? There are three reasons. First, I can imagine no more worthy endeavor than to study and proclaim the truths of scripture. Second, though I admire greatly the men listed above, I do not agree with any of them on all things. Third, God has blessed me with a humble audience that does not listen to these other voices. I hope that you will benefit from this passing on of knowledge.

Today I sat down again with Dr. Michael Licona, Associate Professor of Theology at Houston Baptist University. This episode is the third in a new series where we'll take a book-by-book approach for most of the New Testament, but before we actually get to the individual books of the New Testament, though, I wanted to take some time to dig into the #Gospels as ancient biographies. To do just that, Mike joins us for the second week in a row, this time to talk about the differences between each Gospel. In 2017 Mike wrote a book titled Why Are There Differences in the Gospels? What We Can Learn from Ancient Biography (link below). I think this is the clearest and best all around explanation for why the four #canonical #evangelists differ in matters of detail, arrangement, and emphasis in each of their accounts. In the book, Mike examines several biographies written by a Greek author named Plutarch, who lived from roughly ad 46 to 120. #Plutarch often discussed the same person in different biographies, and Mike shows how these differences in matters of detail, arrangement, and emphasis from Plutarch are precisely the kinds of differences we see in the Gospels. Near the end of the episode Mike says, “Our view of inspiration must be consistent with what we see in Scripture,” and I think he's correct. For Why Are There Differences in the Gospels? Dr. Gary Habermas has dedicated his life to the study and defense of the Resurrection because it is without a doubt the seminal event in history and the foundation of Christianity—simply put, without the Resurrection Christian belief crumbles. (Note: This conversation took place in March 2018 as Hank was in the midst of his battle with cancer—Thanks be to God, Hank is now cancer free). Topics discussed include: How studying the Resurrection led Dr. Habermas into apologetics (3:15); empirical evidence for Christianity compared to other religions (8:30); perspectives on the supernatural in academic circles (11:00); the Resurrection, Jesus Seminar, and the Pre-Pauline Creed (14:45); evidence of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ (18:45); Islamic denial of the crucifixion of Christ (21:15); evidence of an empty tomb after the Resurrection of Christ (27:25); witnesses to the Resurrection and the martyrdom that ensued (30:35); the faith and martyrdom of early church fathers such as Polycarp and Irenaeus (36:10); the sorrow Habermas felt losing his wife to cancer and the hope he felt knowing that she was in heaven (40:30); the peace that the Resurrection of Christ provides Hank in the midst of his battle with cancer (47:00); the argument from joy by C. S. Lewis (54:30); a miracle in Hank's life and the role of miracles in Christianity (59:00); rewards in heaven (1:04:15); world religions, the reliability of Scripture and the radical uniqueness of Jesus (1:06:30); do all religions lead to God? (1:10:10); is Christianity is rooted in history and evidence? (1:14:20); why should we believe in miracles? (1:22:30); Christianity corresponds to reality (1:25:00); why aren't more Christians sharing their faith? (1:28:15); why Hank considers his first year fighting cancer as the best year of his life (1:36:45); how cancer has brought the Hanegraaff family closer together and closer to Christ (1:42:50); how suffering through cancer has made Hank more empathetic (1:47:15); Gary Habermas describes watching his wife die of cancer (1:53:00); why the best year of Hank's life is the year he was diagnosed with cancer (1:58:50); Habermas on a magnum opus on the Resurrection (2:00:30). Dr. Lydia McGrew is an analytic philosopher who focuses on the reliability of testimony particularly as that applies to the gospels. She has written a book titled "The Mirror and the Mask: Liberating the Gospels from Literary Devices". We talk about the difference between a literary device model supported by Dr. Michael Licona and the historical reportage model supported by Dr. McGrew. As a statistician I enjoyed getting to talk with Dr. McGrew about probability theory and how we can apply that to our understanding of the gospels. We discuss implications for these different understandings of the gospels for apologetics, for faith, and for understanding Christology. We also spend a good amount of time discussing the christology in the gospel of John. This was a very fun discussion and I hope you will enjoy! Dr. Lydia McGrew's books. Pastor Nat Crawford continues his interview with author and associate professor of theology, Dr. Michael Licona. Today they discuss the reality and relevance of the resurrection, and why it's so important to ask questions and find answers for your faith.
Pastor Nat Crawford interviews author and associate professor of theology, Dr. Michael Licona. Discover the facts, the history, and the power behind Paul's letter to the Galatians as you listen to this fascinating discussion.
As I shared on the first broadcast, I greatly appreciated Gary Habermas and Michael Licona's book, "The Case for the Resurrection of Jesus." Their book influenced this series of broadcasts. In podcast 1, I used the text of 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 as a basis for my study of the resurrection. In this podcast, I will consider how internal and external evidence conclusively testifies that Jesus of Nazareth did in fact die by crucifixion.
A few years ago, I studied with a young man who was struggling with his faith in God. During our six-month study, I read several works from Christian apologists on topics ranging from canonization to the historicity of the New Testament. One book I found particularly helpful was “The Case for the Resurrection of Jesus” by Gary Habermas and Michael Licona. In it, they laid out a five-part case for the resurrection of Jesus as an historical event. A few months later, I shared what I learned from their book on my weekly radio broadcast. I share that series with you in the hopes you will find it as useful and convicting as I did.
Are people leaving Christianity for a “new" truth? Does science keep piercing the truth of every religion? Is the Bible full of contradictions? Does God send 4 billion people to hell? Is it really true that no one talks about these things? Join Frank and he responds to these issues raised by Marty Sampsons, the Hillsong worship leader who says that his faith is now on “Incredibly shaky ground.” Frank also highlights some of the comments made about this by John Cooper, of the Christian rock band Skillet. Pray for Mr. Sampson. He says that he is familiar with the work of William Lane Craig, John Lennox, Ravi Zacharias, Michael Licona and Frank Turek. We pray he will get the answers he needs. Frank also addressed a few of the questions you've sent in, including: Why did God wait so long to stop the child sacrifice of the Canaanites? How can you follow a God who promises eternal torture? (Does He actually promise that?) Why did God give Adam and Eve access to the tree in the garden? If you want to send us a question for the show, please email us at Hello@CrossExamined.org.
