Innovation in the workplace doesn't happen spontaneously; it needs to be encouraged and cultivated for change to truly take place. Before your company can make transformative use of emerging technologies such as AI, you must carefully examine your organization's culture and leadership's reaction to failure to make the jump to the next level not just feasible but inevitable. Missy Kelley and Dave Hartley, hosts of But Who's Counting?, welcomed Stefanie Thelen, Chief Innovation Officer for Object Computing, Inc., to discuss ways businesses can empower inventive new approaches to resolve pain points with real-world use cases of AI and automation. Stefanie urges leadership to “mind the soil” to create a more fruitful environment for workers to take on new initiatives courageously and mindfully. She explains approaching AI by asking “where does it hurt” and thinking big to address it. The conversation also touched on: Where companies should start when implementing AI into business processes How an organization's reaction to failure directly corresponds to its ability to innovate and how she recovered from a $2 million mistake Acknowledging biases and systems that need to change Putting AI in the hands of people before it's needed and how to identify those individuals Tangible examples of AI and automation Stefanie's work with Arch Grants to help build the future economy in St. Louis The impact Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) has on innovation and what it means to “innovate from the edges” “AI, in some ways, is unlike any other technology evolution or advancement. In a lot of ways, it's exactly like every other technology evolution or advancement… Continue to ask why and continue to try to pull back and broaden your lens so that you understand that it's a phenomenal tool, but it's just another tool.” - Stefanie ThelenResources to Count On Check out these additional resources for more insight into the conversation:Connect with Stefanie on LinkedIn Learn more about Object Computing, Inc. As Justin was wrangling with a stubborn shower drain last weekend, a twinge in his back had him reflecting on the physical toll of the years—and it's not just home repairs that can catch us off guard. Stretching beyond the comfort zone of his tool belt, we engage in a heartfelt conversation about the unexpected risks in seemingly routine situations, whether it's deciphering the term "rat bag" or discussing the very real dangers first responders face on a daily basis. A New Jersey officer's recent brush with peril on a 911 hang-up call serves as a stark reminder that vigilance is a must, even when the task at hand seems as mundane as a welfare check. We then shift gears from the frontline of emergency services to the literary frontiers of Stephen King's Dark Tower series, celebrating milestones and the solace found within the pages of a good book. But it's not all about the printed word; we wrap up our session with a journey back in time, not just through the stories we love, but with the magical restoration of the iconic DeLorean from "Back to the Future." It's a tale of community, dedication, and a little bit of movie magic that reminds us why some slices of pop culture are worth preserving. The magic of metaphors. It's a graceful way to relate, land a message and connect. We all have our favorites, areas that map to our lives. For me the magic trio is ice hockey, dogs, and music (specifically classical and jazz). Since hockey season is now formally over (another hearty HUZZAH for the Vegas Golden Knights on their Stanley Cup Championship), internet algorithms have shifted and are feeding me all kinds of dog and music content. So given the idea that came up for me today I'm wondering how long before gardening content shows up. Because this week's episode gets to the root of the matter, or more aptly said, is about rooting out old stuff. You can try to cover it over, you can try to do a superficial fix - that doesn't work. There are drastic measures to take - involving deeply toxic chemicals - with short term gain that deliver serious long term problems. For a long-term solution that doesn't create other issues, it takes time and effort and ongoing effort to keep things clear. So roll up your sleeves and get ready to get your hands dirty. What does leadership actually mean in today's world? Good question. That's what Cathy Brooks thought. And it's why she created Talk, Unleashed – a new podcast of radically honest conversation about ... well ... everything. Whether her own musings or in conversation with industry leaders, this weekly podcast invites curiosity. Curiosity about not what people do, but why they do it. It's about digging underneath to reveal the thing that is most true - that we are more alike than we are not. This podcast compliments Unleashed Leadership, the coaching business through which Cathy helps clients unearth and untether their own internal leadership and connect with others in a way that truly engages. Recently Cathy joined Paris-based start-up OpenBubble as Co-Founder and CEO of North America. OpenBubble's mission is to break through issues of isolation and separation in society by creating a powerful way for people to connect and talk – with no agenda. #gardening #roots #weeds #patience #consciousness #metaphors #leadership #community #OpenBubble #Conversation #connection #TalkUnleashed #UnleashedConversation #UnleashedLeadership #FixYourEndofTheLeash
Some people may think palm trees are native to California, but they're not. In fact, non-native flora abound throughout our state. A bill moving through the California Legislature aims to boost the proliferation of native plants by requiring landscaping on some public and commercial areas to use at least 75 percent low-water, native plants by 2035. The idea is to promote cultivation of California's native plants, increase biodiversity, and respond better to climate change. Native plants play an important role in supporting wildlife and insects that have evolved together over thousands of years. We'll talk about efforts to grow more native plants in California, how they benefit the environment and how to incorporate them into your garden. Guests: Andrea Williams, director of Biodiversity Initiatives for the California Native Plant Society Michael Wilcox, senior lecturer of Native American Studies and Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, Stanford University Kathy Crane, owner of Yerba Buena Nursery at Pastorino Farms Nina House, museum scientist at the University and Jepson Herbaria, at University of California Berkeley

The husband and wife duo are joined by culinary director and partner Aaron Martinez. Aaron joined us on the podcast this week to talk about the growth of not just Vicia, but the other restaurants the team has now opened, including Bistro La Florisian, Winslows Table and Taqueria Morita, which is inspired by his own Mexican heritage and time living and working in California. For years since I've wanted to have Ashleen & Ri on here! With the launch of their new business, Take Root, it was the perfect time for a catch up. In this era of embodied feminine knowing, we discussed the nature of business, of the mysteries, and where we find pleasure. Feminine is the new way, not at the exclusion of the masculine but rather as a model of being and trust that will open to more harmonic possibilities for us all. Cause, fellas, I LOVE YOU! Ya know I couldn't have them out without some hefty geek outs on egregores and whoa, where we went with that, well, take it as it aligns and let the rest go. We drop into a quickie Egyptian past life activation, so see what's ready to be stirred up. As with all past life work, intend that it is something that blesses your Now and not something that's simply fascinating to your ego. If your business could use some Akashic guidance, use the link here to schedule some time for your team. Thanks Ashleen for mentioning this, cause it's totally what I dig! Almost immediately conspiracy theories about the tragedy began to spread, promulgated in large part by people like Alex Jones. On the 10th anniversary of the event, Jody, Niki, and Kellie look back at how the right-wing media ecosystem spread and embraced these conspiracies. Sign up for our newsletter!
