Kevin and Zach welcome back Scott Shrader to talk digital dentistry and specifically about Medit scanners and software. Both Zach and Al are current Medit users so the episode is a great one if you're new to scanning or want to incorporate digital dentistry into your workflow even more! 3D Dentist Approach: While courses often involve scanners, 3D Dentist is largely scanner-agnostic, focusing on techniques. Importance of Training & Support: Scott emphasizes the critical role of knowledgeable support and hands-on training (like that provided by 3D Tech/3D Dentist) when integrating technology, contrasting it with less specialized support from large suppliers. Support is ongoing for products purchased through them. Medit Overview: A South Korean company celebrating 25 years (mostly lab scanners, ~7 years for intraoral). Medit's Value Proposition: No annual fees, free software, and free software upgrades are key differentiators. Medit Link Software Suite (The "Apps"): A powerful, free suite accessible even to non-Medit scanner users (importing STLs). Includes free apps like Model Builder, Crown Design, Night Guard/Bite Splint, Ortho Simulation. Newer, more powerful CAD features (AI Final Crown, Provisional, Inlays/Onlays, Bridge Design) are being introduced with a per-export fee, but the core remains free. AI Crown Design: Discussion on how AI differs from standard proposals (better morphology matching, less tweaking, potential AI margination) vs. algorithms. Practical Scanning Tips & Troubleshooting: Marking margins: Alan does, Zach doesn't – lab preferences vary. Sluggish scanning fixes: Ensure the laptop is plugged in, perform all updates (Windows, graphics drivers, Medit Link), check scanner tip condition (rated for ~100 autoclave cycles, look for degradation/spots). Technique: Dry teeth well, use the white light setting for scanning through blood, proper path/tissue capture (especially around canines). Hardware: i700 vs. i900: The i900 is smaller, lighter, has a larger scan area, multiple tip sizes, and is generally smoother, especially for full arches and scanning through blood. The i900 "Classic" brings back the physical button many users missed. Recommended Medit Apps to Explore: Model Builder & Bite Splint: Great, easy entry points for CAD, good for team delegation (requires printer for output). Ortho Simulation: Automated simulation of tooth movement. Smile Design: Powerful tool using even basic phone photos, creates a shareable before/after slider for patient communication. App Access: Apps run on the scanning computer but can be accessed remotely by logging into your Medit Link account on another computer (requires downloading case files). Integrations: Medit Link integrates with third-party software and platforms (SprintRay Cloud, Exocad, etc.). According to an article in the NZ Herald this morning, fewer people want to be teachers. Teacher education is still a popular field of study, but both Canterbury and Otago Universities have seen a decline in teaching student enrolments over the past four years. Provisional data shows Canterbury has 964 students enrolled in a course in 2025, down from 1281 four years ago. Otago has followed a similar trend, with student numbers dropping from 620 to 495 in the same period. National Polytech, Te Pukenga, has seen the lowest number of first year teaching students since it formed in 2020. It's not the best news when we are facing a teacher shortage is it? PPTA President Chris Abercrombie said the downward trend is extremely worrying. I'm not surprised by this trajectory. All we seem to hear about are issues around pay, conditions, and the challenge of changes to the curriculum. And then there are the parents who don't have the time to support their children in their education but complain about teachers when their children don't reach their expectations. I can understand pay and conditions being a red flag for someone heading into teaching, but teachers have worked hard advocating for themselves when it comes to pay, and the government has accepted conditions need to improve. But it's in all our best interests that we attract good people, passionate about education, to the profession, and while we may not be able to do much about the pay and conditions outside a general election, we can do something to push back on the shift in attitude towards teachers which has crept in over recent years, preventing some from considering the idea of being a teacher. Chris Abercrombie said, “One of the things we often hear is the lack of respect from the community, from politicians, and people are like, well, why do I want to go into a profession that has that.” As in any industry, there are great teachers, good teachers, and some who may be a bit useless. But we need to be championing our teachers. Teachers play a massive, formulative role in our children's lives. Some even change a young person's life, or what our kids believe is possible. Just over 3 years ago, a young lady rather close to me started high school, had a bit of a hiccup, and was at school for about half of years 9 and 10. In year 11 she started a new school, and this year she aims to wrap up school and complete year 13 a year early, before heading to university to do a science degree. There isn't a person who knows what she's been through who isn't stunned by this turn around. A lot of it is down to this remarkable young lady – she has worked hard to get back on track and loves to study - but it's also thanks to a series of extraordinary teachers that she is where she is today. So, if we want the best outcome for our children and their future, we can start by showing some respect, and champion all the good teachers out there. In this episode we interview D. Óg, an Irish Republican and Irish language activist who works with Iskra Books, and their Irish language imprint Bradán Feasa. In this discussion we talk about the Iskra Books publication The Dark: Selected Writings of Brendan Hughes. Hughes, was a former Irish Republican Army volunteer, political prisoner, and Hunger Striker. And while he is a very well known figure within Irish Republican circles and among those who have studied the provisional IRA, some folks may also have become introduced to him through the book and the Fx/Hulu series Say Nothing. In this episode I talk to D a bit about several of The Dark's writings, about the politics of Brendan Hughes, his internationalism, his solidarity with Palestinians, and his lifelong commitment to a 32 county socialist Irish Republic. Along the way we talk about Hughes' response to the so-called Good Friday Agreement, or has Hughes called it “Got F*ck All,” his critiques of the political trajectory of Sinn Féin, and more. We highly recommend you check out this book from the comrades at Iskra Books. As with all their work there is a free pdf version you can download from there website, so do that to check it out, but also I really recommend ordering yourself a physical copy to support their work and to add this beautiful book to your collection. I also just want to mention that if you're interested in conversations about counterinsurgency, Orisanmi Burton and I have released part one of a two part conversation on Frank Kitson and his book Low Intensity Operations, for a brief period Kitson was in charge of the counterrevolutionary campaign against the IRA, as well as counterrevolutionary wars in Kenya against the Mau Mau, and in Malaya. We will link that in the show notes along with some other discussions we've had about Ireland and Irish revolutionary politics over the years. And part two of my conversation with Orisanmi Burton about Kitson's Low Intensity Operations will be this coming Friday at 10 AM Eastern Time (US) on our YouTube channel. A link to that will be in the show notes as well. In addition, we also have a conversation with Mark Neocleous tomorrow Tuesday the 18th at 12:30 PM ET on his new book Pacification: Social War and the Power of Police, and one on Thursday with James Kilgore the new zine he's put together with Vic Liu on Lessons in Global Solidarity. In this episode we talk to Gearóid Ó Faoleán about his research into support for the Provisional IRA in the Republic of Ireland during the Troubles. Gearóid is the author of A Broad Church: The Provisional IRA in the Republic of Ireland, 1969–1980 and A Broad Church Vol. 2: The Provisional IRA in the Republic of Ireland, 1980-1989, published by Merrion Press in 2019 and 2023, respectively. He is currently working on a history of traditional music in west Clare with support from a bursary from the Irish Association of Professional Historians. We discuss the extent of support and sympathy for the IRA in the South and its role in the armed campaign; how public support manifested in training, arms, and the legal system; and the wide, cross-party political spread of IRA sympathy, discrete from the political wing of the Provisional movement. Both volumes of A Broad Church are available from Merrion Press.
The complexity of Social Security calculations can cause some confusion around when someone eligible should file and claim their benefit. There are a lot of variables to consider and acronyms to decipher that can make Social Security feel like a confusing hedge maze. Let's cut through some of the noise and clarify some of the most pressing questions around Social Security benefits and what questions you need to consider to determine what's best for you and your family. Social Security has many layers, and the concept of eligibility can be pretty complex. It's not always clear when and how someone should begin taking their benefits because being eligible doesn't necessarily mean you should turn that benefit on. Social Security benefits can be turned on as early as age 62. Each year the benefit is delayed, you receive what is called a delayed retirement credit or DRC. These DRCs guarantee an automatic 8% increase in your Social Security benefit every year you delay up to age 70. There is also your full retirement age. This is the age when you are eligible to receive the full benefit without any offset for having earned income. Earned income being income from employment, which is different from income received from investments, pensions or annuities. For those born in 1960, or later, your FRA is age 67. Benefits are calculated by the Social Security Administration by taking 35 years of earnings that are indexed for inflation. Any years you didn't work are counted as a zero in your average earnings calculation. These annual amounts are then totaled and divided by four and 20 months to arrive at the monthly figure known as your average indexed monthly earning. This number is different from your benefit amount. The SSA then applies a formula to that number which determines your primary insurance amount or PIA and this is your monthly Social Security benefit. If you choose to take your benefit before your FRA while employed, there's an offset that can significantly reduce the benefit if your income exceeds $21,240 in 2023. This reduction is $1 for every $2 of earned income over the limit. In the year you reach your FRA, the limit increases to $56,520 in 2023, with a benefit reduction of $1 for every $3 of earned income over the limit. After you've reached your FRA there's no earning limits and you receive the full benefit with no income offsets. Provisional income comes into play after your benefits are activated. Your provisional income is calculated by taking your adjusted gross income plus half of your Social Security benefit. If that total is less than $25,000, your Social Security benefit is not subject to federal tax. If it is above 25,000, but below 34,000, 50% of the benefit is taxed, and if it's above 34,000, 85% of the benefit is taxed. If you're a government employee, there's something called a Windfall Elimination Provision, or WEP. And there's also a Government Pension Offset, or GPO. There are three common conversations we have with clients when it comes to Social Security. The first thing is determining the breakeven point. One method for deciding when to take Social Security benefits involves calculating the breakeven point, this is the future point in time when the value of one option equals that of another. For example, if your FRA benefit is $2,000 a month, and $1,400 at age 62, there's a $600 a month difference. When compared to waiting the five years and taking the full amount, the breakeven point would be 11.6 years. Something else to keep in mind is that by taking a benefit early, you reduce the amount of spousal benefit made available since the benefit in and of itself has been reduced and this could be an important consideration. The second consideration relates to one's health and longevity. If you don't expect to live past that breakeven point, taking the benefit early might make more sense. From this perspective, it could be a win-win situation if they start receiving benefits early and they live longer than expected because the payments continue. We can't know our lifespan for certain, but if you're in poor health, taking benefits early might be a reasonable option. The third consideration involves a person's retirement income requirement. Many clients we work with see Social Security simply as a piece of the retirement income strategy, and aren't necessarily concerned with breakeven points as much as they are with maximizing their assets and the resources. Many clients opt to turn their Social Security benefits on instead of tapping into their assets in order to maintain growth. Using assets to generate income in retirement also comes with variables that are hard to predict, like the conditions of the stock market and economic policy. Social Security, in comparison, is stable and easy to predict. Figuring out your retirement income requires careful planning, which is why it's crucial to work with a professional that understands Social Security and its role in your retirement plan. For nearly 50 years after Social Security's inception in 1935, benefits were not subject to federal income taxes. That changed in 1983 when Congress introduced taxation on benefits for higher-income retirees, using a "provisional income" threshold of $25,000 for individuals and $32,000 for couples. However, these thresholds were never adjusted for inflation, leading to a significant increase in the number of retirees paying taxes on their benefits—now nearly 50%. President Trump has proposed eliminating federal taxation on Social Security, a move that could benefit retirees financially but would accelerate the depletion of the Social Security Trust Fund, currently projected to run out by 2034. Removing taxes could shift the depletion timeline up by about a year, raising questions about alternative funding solutions. Potential fixes include raising payroll taxes, increasing the wage base, or pushing back the full retirement age. While tax relief sounds appealing, long-term sustainability remains uncertain.Questions answered:1. Why are Social Security benefits taxed, and how did this change over time?2. To maximize your Social Security benefits in retirement, it's essential to understand five key limits and thresholds:✅ Earnings Limit: If you start Social Security before full retirement age, benefits may be reduced if your wages exceed the annual or monthly earnings limit. Only income earned after starting benefits counts.✅ Social Security Wage Base: This is the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security taxes each year. It impacts both how much you pay into the system and the benefits you may receive.✅ Maximum Benefit: Your benefit amount is based on factors like your lifetime earnings and the age at which you begin collecting benefits. Delaying benefits increases your monthly payments, while starting early reduces them.✅ Provisional Income: This determines how much of your Social Security benefit is taxable. Higher income levels can result in up to 85% of your benefit being taxed at the federal level.✅ Bend Points: These thresholds influence how your lifetime earnings are converted into benefits. Lower earnings are replaced at a higher percentage, meaning early contributions can have a significant impact.Understanding these limits helps you make strategic decisions and optimize your retirement income.Questions answered:1. How can I maximize my Social Security benefits and avoid unnecessary reductions?2. AP correspondent Norman Hall reports the U.S. Supreme Court Supreme Court has allowed Pennsylvania to count contested provisional ballots, rejecting a Republican plea.
Poll workers in Mendocino County are coached on common and uncommon questions at a poll worker training in Fort Bragg. But even as poll workers prepare to accept mail-in ballots and provide provisional ballots to voters who spoiled their mail-in ballots, the numbers of Americans who have already cast their ballot are climbing.
Republicans are asking the U.S. Supreme Court for an emergency order in Pennsylvania that could result in thousands of votes not being counted in this year's election. Some counties will still be counting votes after Election Day -- which is part of the usual process. Philadelphia's district attorney is suing to halt Elon Musk's $1 million giveaway that's part of his political organization's effort to boost Donald Trump's presidential campaign. The investigation into potential voter registration fraud in Lancaster County is progressing, but details are scarce. Mail-in ballots may play a bigger role in this year's election than ever before in Pennsylvania. Despite years of ongoing false claims over the security of mail-in voting by Donald Trump, it's now a key part of the Republican strategy. The Amish are numerous across the state, and yet only a small minority of them vote in elections. They're being targeted this year in the latest effort to register more of them to vote. Penn State coach James Franklin isn't sure if starting quarterback Drew Allar will be ready to play when the Number 3 Nittany Lions host number 4 Ohio State. Author Shao-Liang Chen, MD, FACC, and JACC Associate Editor Celina M. Yong, MD, FACC, discuss patients with simple and true coronary bifurcation lesions undergoing provisional stenting. Main vessel stenting with a DCB for the compromised side branch resulted in a lower 1-year rate of the composite outcome compared with an NCB intervention for the side branch. The high rates of periprocedural myocardial infarction, which occurred early and did not lead to revascularization, are of unclear clinical significance.
AP correspondent Norman Hall reports Republicans are asking the Supreme Court to block counting of some provisional ballots in Pennsylvania.
The state Supreme Court is affirming protections for mail-in voters in Pennsylvania who make mistakes returning their ballots. Pennsylvania election officials say voters have returned ballots that were ripped, had coffee spilled on them, or even burned. When that happens, they duplicate the votes onto new, clean ballots to ensure they can be scanned and counted by election equipment. One of the hallmarks of American elections is that there's a lot of waiting. Several factors contribute to a relatively slow vote counting process in Pennsylvania. Republican Congressman Scotty Perry is facing a tough reelection race. He is being challenged by Democrat Janelle Stelson, a former WGAL news anchor who is well-known in the 10th congressional district. Governor Josh Shapiro has signed a measure into law -- making the Indian festival of lights Diwali a state holiday. A set of newly filed lawsuits by people who claim they were sexually abused inside Pennsylvania juvenile detention and treatment facilities makes more than 200 people who have launched such cases since May. A new surveillance camera system is in place in York's Penn Park. Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
With only a small handful of weeks remaining until the general election, you may be wondering about how you or your nonprofit can get involved in voter assistance activities such as providing rides to the polls, registering voters, and helping voters vote by mail. Would you be surprised that these activities are often regulated by both state and federal law? On this episode, we'll discuss our Practical Guidance Voter Assistance resources series, created in partnership with Democracy Capacity Project, and explain some of the rules you should be thinking about in the final countdown to the big day. Attorneys for this episode: Tim Mooney Natalie Ossenfort Victor Rivera General Overview of Relevant Law · When engaging in any election-related activities there are several areas of law that your nonprofit should think about: o Internal Revenue Code: explains the types of activities your nonprofit is allowed to engage in accordance with the tax code § 501(c)(3)s: Keep it nonpartisan. No support or opposition of candidates. Allowed to engage in campaigns for or against ballot initiatives, constitutional amendments, bond measures, city charter amendments. Just remember that this activity may count as lobbying at the federal level. § 501(c)(4)s; (c)(5)s, (c)(6)s: Partisan political activities as secondary activities of org § PACs: Regulated by Section 527 of tax code. Partisan political work as focus, but different types of PACs may be restricted in terms of whether they can engage in coordinated vs. independent expenditures o Other federal laws, including the Federal Election Campaign Act: always going to be relevant in elections with federal candidates on the ballot § Provisional ballots available even if they aren't under state election laws (i.e. can vote provisionally for POTUS if there's a dispute as to registration status and resolve that later) § Accessible ballots required under the Help America Vote Act (HAVA). § Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) requires states to provide absentee ballots for military personnel, their families, and U.S. citizens overseas in federal elections. § Voting Rights Act (VRA) · requires jurisdictions with significant populations of non-English-speaking citizens to provide bilingual election materials and assistance, ensuring all voters can understand and participate in the process. · allows observers from the Department of Justice or the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to monitor elections to ensure compliance with voting rights laws, especially in areas with a history of discrimination. o State law: Often regulates § Who, when, how you can register voters § Who is eligible to vote-by-mail (and when) § Line-warming activities designed to encourage voters to stay in line § Rules for poll watchers § Voter ID required in some states § And more! Practical Guidance Voter Assistance Series o Focuses on state law, but also includes some federal law tips throughout o (Questions answered include: o How can our organization help people vote by mail? o Can we help with a rides to the polls program? o How can we help voters already at the polls? o When might our work also trigger campaign finance laws? o Can we advocate for a new polling place? o Current states: o Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin o Texas line-warming example o Reminder that many states don't have polling places (in traditional sense) since they've shifted focus to vote-by-mail.
