What's up, dudes? Remember Band Aid and its mega-hit “Do They Know It's Christmas?” It spun off countless relief efforts, including Carol Aid 1985. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas introduced me to this concert, and he's here to talk about its MTV and Music Box broadcast!Carol Aid was a famine relief concert held at the club Heaven in London. MTV and Music Box aired a cut down version, leaving out several acts. In fact, the likes of Magnum, Captain Sensible, and Miquel Brown (to name a few) were cut for time. It's quite unbelievable.Cliff Richard kicked off the broadcast version with “Another Christmas Day,” while John Parr sang “Once in Royal David's City.” Meanwhile, the Fixx pressed for donations and sang “Peace On Earth,” a hidden track from their following album. Subsequently, the event ended with the entire roster singing “Do They Know It's Christmas?” rather heartily.Chris De Burgh? Check. Anita Harris? She was there. Toto Coelo and the Flying Pickets? Got them too, though we have no idea what they sang. So grab your oversized checks, put on your red beret, and jam out to “Carols from Heaven” and Carol Aid 1985!Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicGive us a buzz! Crack open the champagne. Mardi Gras Anthems is celebrating it's 21st edition in March 2024 with 21 featured artists. The annual Sydney Mardi Gras party falls on the first weekend of March this year so in readiness for that, I'm releasing this milestone edition in advance. This set epitomizes the term "Anthems" with tracks from legendary divas such as Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Deborah Cox, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Madonna and the list goes on. There is even an appearance from legendary 80's dance floor divas Evelyn Thomas and Miquel Brown. There are mixes from remixers' across the club spectrum including Mike Rizzo, Block & Crown, Country Club Martini Crew and the always fantastic Wayne G, 7th Heaven and Russ Rich. Each year I badger two of my favourite remix artists - Division 4 and Dirty Disco for copies of their early release and private remixes and every year they very generously provide me with them. I know I sound a bit like a broken record when I say this, but their generosity in doing this for me is so greatly appreciated and changes the landscape of how I approach and assemble these Mardi Gras Anthems sets. I'll let the music speak (sing) for itself while you hit the dance floor for this year's Mardi Gras Anthems deep dive. Episode 233: Think back to Episode 229 from a few weeks ago, when Joe and Kari discussed in Tidbits the list of the 500 Best Pop Songs from Billboard. If you remember, part of the criteria included that the song HAD to chart on the Hot 100 to qualify. Well, the people at Billboard put together ANOTHER list of the 100 Best Pop songs NOT to hit the Hot 100, and that's what is being discussed in this week's episode! You'll hear about pop non-hits from Miquel Brown, Taena Gardner, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman and others! Did they deserve to make the list?

Miquel Brown sits down with me for a chat about her memories of when Gary and I first came to London, her acting career and how she doesn’t understand people who get nervous to go on stage (because she is more uncomfortable off stage…I do not relate to this!), and the ways in which her hit song “So Many Men, So Little Time” does/doesn’t relate to her real-life experiences.
In this incredible interview, Miquel Brown shares her stories of brushes with the Ku Klux Klan, dating David Bowie and what it was like growing up in the USA, along with her thoughts on the sad death of George Floyd. When you meet Miquel Brown, the first thing you'll notice is her big warm smile. Her energy, her enthusiasm, and her love for people stand out and you might find you become great friends. This is exactly what happened with us over 20 years ago. It wasn't until after we became friends that I discovered she has 6 gold records, 1 platinum album, has acted in movies such as French Kiss, Fantastic Beasts, American Haunting, Rollerball, Superman, as well as endless performances in the West End. Wow!She's one of the most humble people I know and is still busy working, juggling multiple entrepreneurial and creative projects in her 7th decade. Miquel was born in Motown and is the mother of singer Sinitta and stepsister of Amii Stewart.More details: merilyn.com
After much hair-tearing, sleep deprivation and overall frustration — Party Favorz is finally back with volume 2 of The Essential 80's Dance Mix. I only say this because I was trying to pick up a great variety of the biggest dance hits of the era but it's not as simple as it sounds. I had mentioned in my previous post how musical styles tend to spill over into the following decade before the actual defining sounds appear by the fourth year going forward — I had forgotten about the Hi NRG boom of the early part of the decade. This sound adapted the synthesized nature of music that had been previously dabbled with by the likes of Giorgio Moroder, Cerrone and even Peter Brown. By 1980, it hit its stride with the remix of Patrick Cowley's 1980 remix of Donna's Summer's "I Feel Love." Patrick went on to lead the genre with multiple club hits like "Menergy," "Megatron Man," and the era-defining sound of the gay movement "Do You Wanna Funk" by Sylvester (which is included in the Trash Disco Series). Tracks like Paul Parker's "Right On Target," Evelyn Thomas "High Energy" (which was the basis for Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Relax"), Miquel Brown's "So Many Men, So Little Time" and a multitude of others. The problem I have with these tracks is not that they didn't define a movement throughout the decade but that the production values wore poor if not downright cheesy and didn't really quite fit in with the music that defined the era. Most of them were on independent labels that didn't have the budget for quality productions. Almighty Records has done a remarkable job of updating many of these tracks, which have been featured on my Hi NRG series. Regardless, I may go back and whip up a single set of the original versions of the biggest tracks from this era. They not only defined the gay community but provided the soundtrack to the era that spawned AIDS, which devastated our community. These songs represent a soundtrack to a certain place and time deserve to be honored in their own right. If anything, Patrick Cowley deserves to be honored for the movement he helped create as he was one of the earliest victims to die from AIDS in 1982 before it even had a name. Sylvester died from the disease in 1988. As for this second set of 80's dance music classics, I think I finally hit my stride while still mostly keeping to my original mission of mixing up the commercial alternative and pop-hit dance tracks. It may be odd to hear Michael Jackson right next to When In Rome but it works. Many of these tracks have been remastered by yours truly from their vinyl counterparts. As such, you may hear some clicks throughout but that only lends to its authenticity. There are a couple of things I do want to point out. Madonna's "Into The Groove" was shortened because there's an entire section that's a repeat but Hot Tracks thought it wise to overlap different sections of the song, which I found jarring. I just took it out altogether shortening the mix, which keeping everything still intact. Also, Whitney's "Love Will Save The Day" had a lot of issues but there weren't really any remixes of this track other than the housed-up Jellybean and Morales take, which does not belong. There is a minor skip in the second verse but it's hardly cringing worthy. Usually, I can fix these if it's repeated elsewhere but that was not the case here. I'm running behind on these so I may very well have to put the remaining two sets off until November as well as the Junior Vasquez Legacy set I had promised. We're already heading into the middle of October and I need to get out the next Dance Club and Circuit Tribal House set before Halloween. No worries. I'll get everything done — it's just that my timelines have changed. Until the next time...ENJOY! The original upload has been edited down by almost 4 minutes for better cohesion and flow. Seasons 1 and 2 are consolidated in this episode to observe the birth and progression of this special program. When "Club Soda" first aired on the KJHK 90.7FM, there wasn't much continuous mixing applied. As a radio DJ, I had not discovered within myself to mix songs in a club style until later on. 10 years later, a retro set was crafted to take a look at history in a nonstop mix. A short 30 minutes full of glorious club classics from the 70s and 80s come together to provide a groove that will set you on a stroll down through memory lane. It just seems like the newer generation of music listeners do not recognize the significance of music from those decades anymore. Although it's a short episode, this won't be the last time you'll hear of this. Kicking off with a powerful anthem from Gloria Gaynor to meeting up with Barry Manilow at "Copacabana", we will start at a steady tempo and gradually increase as the mix moves forward. "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor "Copacabana" by Barry Manilow "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper "Hot Stuff" by Donna Summer "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)" by The Jacksons "Let's Groove" by Earth, Wind & Fire "Superfreak" by Rick James "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps "You're the First, the Last, My Everything" by Barry White "So Many Men, So Little Time" by Miquel Brown "It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls "Beat It" by Michael Jackson
