October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. So many members of our community have walked this journey of miscarriage or infertility. The comment we hear a lot when discussing these issues is that it is not talked about enough. It is very natural and understandable that we shy away from deeply personal and painful subjects such as this one, but today I want to dedicate an episode to talking about this subject that is more common than we realize. Today on the podcast sharing her trying to conceive journey is Natalie Torres-Haddad. Natalie talks about the treatments they have tried and the money that is involved. She also discusses the support she has received along the way. She also touches on things NOT to say to someone on this journey as well as helpful ways we can support them as well. 2020 was a year of great social upheaval, protests, and even riots. Some of the worst that we have seen in decades. Many of us, however, remember when four police officers who had been videotaped beating motorist Rodney King were found not guilty of criminal acts in 1992, the city of Los Angeles erupted in what at the time was the worst rioting seen in the US since the 1960s. The loss of life and destruction of property left a significant scar on the city. By the time the riots ended, 63 people had been killed, 2,383 had been injured, more than 12,000 had been arrested, and estimates of property damage were over $1 billion. The Rodney King riots not only reduced taxable sales in the city immediately following the unrest, but has had a lasting impact on the economic performance of the city of Los Angeles. A 2017 study showed the communities most affected by the L.A. Riots have seen little, if any, economic growth during the past two-and-a-half decades, In some neighborhoods, unemployment and poverty have worsened despite efforts by community leaders to boost economic development. Natalie Torres-Haddad was born in El Salvador but was brought up in Inglewood California in the early nineteen nineties. At the age of ten, everything changed with the LA riots. She could no longer play outside, her parents put bars on her windows, restaurants and stores were looted and burnt down to the ground in her neighborhood. And she grew up wanting to do something about it. Accordingly, she went to college to learn about finances to help her community. She got a major in finance and international business but unfortunately she still didn't understand the meaning of true financial literacy. During her second year of grad school, burdened by student and credit card debt, a mortgage, and running a burgeoning nonprofit, she lost her job and suffered a severe bout of depression which culminated in a short stay in an acute psychiatric hospital. The moment of clarity she experienced shortly thereafter would ultimately change her trajectory and introduce her to the five steps that made her realize that everything would be ok. Natalie Torres-Haddad is a two time TEDX Speaker, An international Award Winning Author of Financially Savvy in 20 Minutes, a bilingual podcast host, international keynote speaker and educator. She has been featured in the Huffington Post, LA Times, 60 second docs and a Honda commercial playing herself as a Financial Expert. She now is a successful real estate investor and enjoys a career traveling across the country advocating for financial and women's empowerment and teaching the foreign language of financial literacy.

According to Forbes, "Latinas make just 53 cents for every dollar the average white, non-Hispanic man makes. Compare that to the 79 cents white women earn on average compared to white men, and the 63 cents that black women make. Latina women must work 305 extra days into the next calendar year just to earn what the average white man earns in a year." Harlan Landes sits down with Daniella Flores, Athena Valentine, and Natalie Torres-Haddad to discuss Latina Women's Equal Pay Day and the Latina pay gap. How can you become better with money? The good news: it's simple! The bad news? Just like anything else it will require a bit of work. Lucky for you, we're covering some of our favorite exercises (call them whatever you want if the word "exercise" isn't doing it for you) to make you better with your money. On that note, we want to give a big thanks to Eric and Kali Roberge for today's piece! Eric wrote it on the Beyond Your Hammock blog, and Kali has so nicely agreed to be our celebrity reader. To tackle the topic, this week's roundtable guests include Natalie Torres-Haddad, author of Financially Savvy in 20 minutes, Len Penzo from the LenPenzo.com blog, and OG from our very own podcast. Taking vacation could be hard enough BEFORE most of us started to work from home. Either from company culture, a disorganized office, or simply grinding to pull ahead of the pack - there are a ton of reasons people don't feel comfortable asking for time off. Now you can add working from home and becoming virtually connected to the office all day to your list of problems. What's an employee to do? Helping us navigate the new waters is our (not so physically) near and dear friend, Suzanne Lucas from the Evil HR Lady blog. We'll finish the show with our MagnifyMoney segment. Kelvin calls in with what he admits is a great problem to have: him and his wife are set and well on the way to early retirement if they choose to do so. Now the problem... how in the world do they get out of the hustle and save mindset? Once someone "makes" it, how do they start enjoying their money? Of course, halfway through the show we'll carve out some time for Doug's game show trivia.

you know, I never knew how many privilege I knew. I was always very privileged because I've been really fortunate most of my life. And when I, when I travel when I lived in a different country, that's how also I was reminded how privileged I am to being an American citizen, being, you know, being brought up here. I was pretty much raised here. I was a baby when my parents came to the States. But I think what we recognize that, you know, it's kind of that, oh my gosh, like, how can we do our best to hopefully be more compassionate, hopefully to see ourselves in their place, especially right now a mental health is month of May, right mental health awareness and more and more when I talk about it, it becomes an issue where I think sometimes people think they'll use a phrase So that person is crazy. Like First of all, you don't know what they're going through, you don't know what their past you don't know their if they have any mental illnesses that they're dealing with anything that's tragic life changing. And the fact that I can hopefully do my best to try to one I'll never understand perfectly what they're going through that I know that I can say, you know what, there's resources for you. I'm here if you just need to listen, I'm also learning as I go with you, because there's moments that I've caught myself saying something like I still hate it when people are like, Oh, so and so's bipolar. And I know they're doing it as a joke. And I'm like, first of all, you don't know bipolar people. You don't know what that means. If you don't know what triggers You know, that's another issue, right? And so, a lot of the negative stigma within our cultures need to change our the way we talk about it the way we have these conversations, and I'm still learning and there's still moments where I'm like, Hmm, maybe I could have been more sensitive to that. Or, you know, when you see someone that's homeless, you just said you are homeless. You have a totally different perspective, right. I met people too, that this one lady, hearing her story she was homeless and she never thought she'd be homeless. She was Canadian. And she was in her 50s with a 15 year old daughter and her both her parents at passage had no family here in the States. And she got cancer and during her treatments, obviously she could no longer work because she was so sick, that they lost their place their home and so she said she was going to chemo, radiation, chemo weekly, I believe I forget how often, but the fact that she ended up living in her car with her daughter. And then luckily she found this program, a nonprofit that I'm a big supporter of called the St. Margaret center and changed her life to help her and all this up but she thought she said she used to think homeless people were either sick or drug addicts or something. She said I could never imagine me this, you know, white woman and, and all of a sudden, she can no longer work and afford to pay her bills and you know, living at a car with her daughter. And so those things that really changed her perspective, I think all of us can have some kind of compassion, whether we can you know, xantham what they went through www.Eastcoasttags.com @eastcoasttags.com NOYB or Noneofyourbusiness promo code 10% off @Financiallysavvylatina www.Finaciallysavvyin20minutes.com @robert_delude

Our amazing interview with Natalie Torres-Haddad TEDX Speaker and Award winning Author. Also sharing our thoughts & ways you can help immigrant families.
Join Turg and Randy Z as they engage their savvy guest Natalie Torres-Haddad - award winning author, TEDx speaker and financial influencer - as they discuss the realities behind finances and most importantly financial literacy - or lack thereof - in our lives and... Why we are not set up for financial success in school? Natalie - a business major - shares her experiences with the lack of formal education in the realm of financial literacy. It's an important topic that doesn't get as much attention as it needs. The reality is that our schools do not help support financial education for children of all ages. The fundamentals of finances are always discovered the hard way. Natalie, Turg and Randy reminisce about college and how financial trouble usually brought invaluable lessons along with it. Unfortunately, even now, information on how to be financially free and successful in our lives comes at the expense of learning the hard way. What impact does culture have on financial transparency? You'd never think that culture played a role in finances, but it does. Natalie shares her real-life experiences with family and finances and not being able to pinpoint how her family was doing financially. Growing up, we might not have noticed how finances were discussed among our parents. But moving forward - and now especially in our 30s and if we have children - it's important to understand how transparency helps share lessons with all involved. When kids start asking about finances, it's important not to hide things from them that might help them discover their own path toward the subject. For many cultures it's taboo to discuss finances - how do we break that cycle in order to help future generations - especially emerging minority populations? How is property buying the key to unlocking financial freedom? Natalie and Turg share their property buying experiences and compare and contrast their successes and failures. Understanding that property can contribute to completely shifting your financial status is important. In the same breath, however, understanding that it could also cost you is equally important. Making the right moves in buying property can help liberate your finances - despite what you may think. Lots of more options are available to you once you buy. But, when you buy, be careful to measure your risks and calculate out your tolerance. When is the right time to buy property? It's always important to know when to buy. Turg shares that his first property came at close to the high point of the housing market back in the early 2000s. Natalie shares her experiences with home owners that went all-in during the peak and suffered the consequences. The lessons learned when investing are always tough. The old adage "It takes money to make money" couldn't be more true than it is today, however, knowing how much to invest and when to invest it is always important. Before you go all-in on something, make sure you've studied the markets, understand your potential financial exposure, and weigh your options carefully. Often times, surrounding yourself with knowledgeable people, books and even social groups might help you gain more of an understanding your future investments
Welcome to Financially Savvy in 20 minutes! This show will be hosted by author, speaker, and award winning author, Natalie Torres-Haddad. Natalie will be sharing her tips and tricks for becoming more financially savvy as well as sharing the stories of self-made millionaires and their journey to financial freedom.
We kick off 2018 with a topic that is often on our minds as we set goals and intentions for the new year! Money. Questions about finances are often questions about values, and are also a manifestation of the larger vision for our lives. Whether you are aware of it or not how you spend says a lot about who you are. When it comes to money you can't have big rewards without taking big risks. Sacrificing to save up to meet our goals is something that requires us to re-frame our thinking. In order to do that we must remember that “sacrificing is not suffering.” This week I talked to Natalie Torres-Haddad aka the Financially Savvy Latina, she literally wrote the book about how to budget money. She has made it her life's work to educate individuals and groups about how to eliminate debt and build wealth. If you are interested in getting on financial track this year you don't want to miss this episode. She answers one of the biggest questions one of the biggest questions about real estate is it really better to buy than to rent? But of course, not everyone is ready to buy! So we also tackle basic budgeting questions (At minute 36) Of course, we speak to larger policy issues, and to how our personal mindst impact our money situation. Why she recommends avoiding language that reiterates we are “broke.” We start off with a conversation tackling the problem with our student loan system and the potential impact of the new tax law. We answer two listener questions. How to determine if you should buy a home, and why a home is still a vessel to build wealth but maybe we have to think outside of the box about how we do it. She also shares insights on where she thinks the market is going in the next few months. What are the questions we should ask ourselves before buying. Then we tackle how to manage money when you are a freelancer or work in a field where your income fluctuates. Plus! Hear how I tricked myself out of impulse purchase with a free online tool and I share my financial goals. She’s an entrepreneur, advocating for the empowerment through our communities through financial literacy, welcome Natalie to this week’s Immigration MIC! Born in El Salvador and raised in Inglewood, Natalie takes me through the story of how her family fled El Salvador during the civil war, and grew up in a neighborhood that surrounded by family in California. This all changed during the LA Riots, which provided her with a first person, eye opening perspective on police brutality and race relations, and how her neighborhood permanently changed as a result. “That happens all the time, it’s just the first time they caught it on video.” The riots changed Natalie’s upbringing as well - she was placed in private school, and she describes to me the shift from public school to an environment where she was one of the only Latinas. “I’ve always been fascinated with the behavior of people and money, that’s why I was a business major.” From cheerleading, to student council, dance, college, running a non-profit (prom dresses for young women), a successful career in real estate development, Natalie finds it exciting to step out of her comfort zone, and take on ambitious roles. Here's where we start getting deep - while she was in graduate school, and the pressure of everything she had taken on, Natalie suffered a mental breakdown, and went into a deep depression. She describes the moments in the hospital, dropping out of her course, the way she began to recover, and we share our collective experiences around panic attacks. As a result, Natalie is a very outspoken advocate for mental health wellness. Natalie founded Financially Savvy Latina - an initiative focused on financial literacy, inspired by wanting to provide helpful tips to other people to manage their money habits, and student loans - even writing a short book that captures all these tips in one place. In this political moment, Natalie believes in the power of sharing stories and representation of our communities in institutions, and is using her platform to help inspire others to find empowerment through her speaking engagements and presentations. She’s very passionate about the undocumented community and the need to connect students to scholarships that may be available to help them overcome: “these students will come back and do these amazing things - they’re willing to work twice as hard to be seen as equal” “This is our future, they are our communities - no matter what background we’re from” Thank you Natalie for pitching yourself to the podcast - you’re a perfect representation of the people we need in our corners as we fight for social justice with all of your wisdom, ambition, and love for our communities!
