Laurie Dove is a do-er. She likes to keep busy. Alongside writing for numerous places like CNN, Animal Planet, the LA Business Journal, and many more, Laurie was elected local Mayor back in 2015, has a Masters Degree from Harvard, and has just published 'Mask of the Deer Woman'.It tells the story of Carrie Starr. Once a detective in Chicago, Carrie has hit rock-bottom after a personal tragedy and returned to the reservation in which she grew up to be their local Marshal. When a college student goes missing, Carrie must wrestle with the reasons why her own daughter disappeared. We discuss why Laurie has found time to write for pleasure when she makes money writing for other people, also how she dealt with the ambiguity of magical realism, and why she likes to sneak up on the story. You can hear how fiction comes from character, how hard it is to find an organic ending to the first novel in a series, and why the only way to find out how to write novels... is to write novels. This week's episode is sponsored by the 'Charley Scott Mysteries', by Vanessa Westermann. Can You Actually Have It All In A Stepfamily? Today I'm sharing an interview I did for this year's Stepmom Summit because it's the kind of story that we don't get to hear enough of as stepmoms: a stepmom and mom who not only get along, but are real-life friends, work together, and have made co-parenting virtually seamless for their kids. I'm talking with Emmy Award-winning journalist Catt Sadler and Digital Dept. CEO Sarah Boyd. These women are each superstars professionally, and both vowed to put the kids in the stepfamily first. It's a wonderful story of how the dynamics can come together in a loving and positive way.  About Catt: Catt Sadler is a three time-Emmy winning journalist, renowned for her work on E! Entertainment, where she spent more than a decade contributing to E! News, E! News Weekend, Daily Pop, Live From E! and hosting various network specials. She's also been a fixture on the red carpet covering high-caliber events and interviewing celebrities during awards season. She has been co-host of the Vanity Fair Oscars Party show for the last several years. Today, she is the host and EP of her weekly podcast: CATT SADLER Now. Catt has appeared on The View, The Talk, The Tamron Hall Show, and many other programs. After choosing to leave E! over a wage gap issue and receiving an outpouring of support, Catt became a prominent voice for the equal pay movement. She has spent much of her time contributing to the cause by taking part in the LA Women's March, speaking at the Equal Pay Day rally at City Hall in New York, and starring in LUNA Bar's Equal Pay Day campaign. Catt was also selected for the NYDJ Denim campaign highlighting women leading change. She starred in the SECRET deodorant “I'd Rather Get Paid” initiative and MM.Le.Fleur's “What Are You Made Of?” fashion campaign. In 2021 she was featured with a diverse group of women in Summersalt's swimwear campaign celebrating an eclectic group of confident and successful women who love their bodies – in all forms, at any age. Championing women has always been her passion. About Sarah: Sarah Boyd is the co-CEO of The Digital Dept., which represents the most sought-after celebrity influencers. Her current/past clients roster includes Alessandra Ambrosio, Jamie Chung, Olivia Culpo, Julianne Hough, Lauren Bushnell Lane, Jana Kramer, and many more who look to Sarah to help them capitalize on their influential status in the entertainment industry to make their mark in the influencer world. Sarah started her career in Fashion PR and in 2012, she decided to channel her expert industry know-how, her extensive list of contacts, and relationships into starting her own business, SIMPLY, a collective with one goal in mind: connecting. The SIMPLY ‘Do What You Love' event is an annual Fashion and Beauty Conference in cities such as LA, NY, Chicago, and Dubai. Since 2012, SIMPLY has hosted tens of thousands of attendees. Sarah has secured partnerships with prestigious brands like CITI, Topshop, Barney's NY and many more. She's been featured in Marie Claire, People Style Watch, Fox News, E!, LA Business Journal, to name a few. She was named a “Female Founder to Watch” by Forbes and is now a Forbes Fashion and Beauty contributor. In 2017, Sarah completed a successful acquisition for SIMPLY with Socialyte (under the NYLON LLC parent company) and Sarah held the position of President of Socialyte. In 2018, Sarah co-founded the Moms + Babes Box with partner Jana Kramer which is a quarterly subscription box filled with 6+ full sized products for moms and their babes. In 2020, Sarah and Jana sold the business. In 2022, Socialyte was acquired by Dolphin Entertainment, and in 2023, Socialyte and Be Social merged to become The Digital Dept. where Sarah was installed as co-CEO. Welcome to today's episode featuring a sober friend and female powerhouse, Shelton Wilder.  Her bio says it all:Shelton Wilder hails from Charlotte, North Carolina but loves Los Angeles as only a native can. In her over fifteen years on the Westside, Shelton has developed a nuanced understanding of LA's complex and often bewildering patchwork of neighborhoods, schools, and cultures. In just over six years as a realtor--but many more as a serial entrepreneur in marketing, fashion, and entertainment---Shelton has achieved a staggering $300 million in total sales, putting her in the top 1.5% of realtors nationwide. Shelton was also nominated for Entrepreneur of the Year by the LA Business Journal, named Real Estate All-Star by Los Angeles Magazine and featured in Forbes “Top 10 Business Professionals to look out for in 2022.” While she specializes in luxury residential and commercial properties in Brentwood, Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Mar Vista, Venice and Beverly Hills, Shelton will travel anywhere her clients have interests. Buying a home is often the most important purchase--and investment--of a person's life. It's also one of the most intense experiences of a person's life, particularly in the ever more competitive Los Angeles market. Shelton is committed to making the process as stress-free as possible. Her compassion, patience, exuberance, and gentleness distinguish her from many with comparably acute business sense and vigorous skills of negotiation. Whether working with a first-time buyer on a starter home or an experienced investor buying a third residence, Shelton is equally dedicated to helping her clients achieve their dreams. This unparalleled devotion, born of a genuine desire to be of service to others, explains why 99% of Shelton's business comes via referral or past clients. The testimonials say it all: when you hire Shelton once, you become part of her extended family--and a client for life. Her relationship-centric approach also explains Shelton's success in securing "off-market" listings. With inventory at an all-time low, hidden listings routinely come to her from former clients and associates who trust her and recognize both her integrity and professionalism. Clients also benefit from Shelton's superb aesthetic sense and extensive background in fashion (she started several fashion-oriented businesses, one of which appeared on Shark Tank). While she enlists the expertise of the industry's top stagers, Shelton brings her imagination, along with her passion for decor and design, to each listing. This loving and enthusiastic attention to the smallest details makes every client feel like she's in their corner --because she is. Shelton is the proud mother of two beautiful boys (Beau and Lane) and the wife of a longtime Los Angeles attorney and avid tennis junkie and Rams fan, Clark. In addition to volunteering at her son's elementary school, Shelton also donates her time and resources at P.S. Arts, The Alexandria House, LA Food Bank and Upward Bound House. In her free time, she enjoys dining out with her wonderful friends and colleagues and indulging in staycations in her favorite location in the entire world, Los Angeles.

Mike started his career as an accountant at one of the Big Four, and then worked in the accounting department of Cornerstone OnDemand, a high flying software company where he helped prepare the company for its IPO. Robert Luo graduated from USC Marshall School of Business with a degree in Bachelor of Business Administration. Robert started his first company when he was 20. It was during the time when he decided to take a gap year after my sophomore year in college. Robert’s company developed a mobile application called Ubi, which allowed users to send messages and videos with Bluetooth. It was a unique and stressful experience at the time. The company failed to deliver the app 5 times before the official launch, which resulted in $30,000 extra expenses. Luckily, after the official launch, the app gained 5000 users within the next 6 months. By the time I sold the company for $300,000, the app had over 10,000 users. After returning to USC, Robert immediately began to draft ideas on how to start next. He eventually came up with two ideas. The first idea was starting a green fashion brand that creates sustainable and recyclable products to reduce fashion waste. After 14 months of research, customer discovery, design, and experimentation, they launched the product, Mi Terro CDS, to Kickstarter in February 2018. Mi Terro CDS is the world’s only bag made of recycled ocean plastics and cork. The campaign was a big success. We were fully funded within 22 hours and later concluded the campaign with 450% funded. Because of our great product and business model, they won $5000 for the USC New Venture Seed Competition. Robert is also running a green software company called Reo2. The Reo2 app rewards users for reducing carbon emission by planting trees on their behalf. Robert Luo was a Forbes Under 30 Scholar and a candidate of the LA Business Journal’s “20 Entrepreneurs in Their 20s.” Show notes at: https://www.justgogrind.com/podcast/
