Hay que decir que el album que vamos a escuchar hoy, ‘American Idiot’ que se trata de un álbum conceptual, y este tema en concreto nos presentan al alter ego del personaje principal llamado ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ llamado ‘St. Jimmy’, en este tema que es mucho más punk rock que el resto del proyecto. Green Day es una banda estadounidense nacida en Berkeley, California que empezaron como grupo de Punk Rock y fueron evolucionando en una de las bandas más reconocidas de la escena del Pop-Punk. Para entender un poco esta evolución debemos hablar de los inicios de los 2 principales fundadores. El guitarrista y cantante Billie Joe Armstrong, nació el 17 de Febrero del 1972 en Rodeo, California y es el pequeño de 6 hijos. Su padre Andy era camionero y su madre camarera. Ya desde pequeño Billie estuvo muy ligado a la música ya que su padre era batería en un grupo de Jazz y su madre había sido bailarina. Su padre por lo tanto siempre había animado a los 6 hijos a que aprendieran a tocar instrumentos, especialmente la batería. Vamos por el primer single del álbum que se titula del mismo nombre que el álbum, “American Idiot”. Este tema es una crítica feroz a Estados Unidos durante el año 2004 cuanto el presidente George Bush fue reelegido y también referencia a la manipulación de los medios en esa época. Michael Ryan Pritchard nació el 4 de Mayo del 1972 en Okland, California. Su madre le puso en adopción poco después de nacer, ya que era adicta a la heroína y seis meses después Cheryl Nasser y Patrick Pritchard le cogieron en adopción. A los 7 años los padres se separaron. Billie y Mike se conocieron a los 10 años cuando iban al colegio, y instantáneamente congeniaron. Billie enseñó a Mike cómo se tocaba la guitarra y él aprendió muy rápido. Empezaron a tocar como dúo escribiendo sus propias canciones y siempre buscando la compenetración perfecta entre ambos a la hora de interpretarlas. Cuando llegaron al décimo curso de la escuela, cogieron a su amigo Sean Hughes para la batería, y cuando pasaron onceavo curso se fueron al instituto Pinole Valley y el grupo se empezó a llamar Sweet Children. En esa época, Billie y Mike entraron en la escena del Punk, fumando hierba y perfeccionando su música. Iban quedando con otros artista de la escena Punk de su zona hasta congeniar con ellos y empezaron a frecuentar el local que había en el 924 Gilman Street, el cual fue el punto de partida para el éxito. Vamos con otra canción muy conocida del grupo que es “Wake Me Up When September Ends” Esta es la única canción que no sigue con la historia del álbum. Billie la escribió en homenaje a su padre, el cual murió a causa de un cáncer en año 1982. El título viene referido a una frase que Billie le dijo a su madre cuando tenía diez años, en aquel momento se encerró en su habitación y cuando su madre le pico a la puerta le citó esta frase. La banda empezó a llamar la atención en la escena musical de la zona, y antes de sacar su primer EP, tomaron la decisión de cambiarse el nombre a Green Day inspirándose en una canción que Billie había escrito para el álbum. Durante las navidades del año 1989 el grupo grabó su primer Ep llamado “1000 Hours”, seguido de un LP llamado 39/Smooth todo esto en las navidades del 1989, y más tarde lanzaron un EP llamado “Slappy” sacado en el verano del año 1990. Todo esto se unió en un álbum recopilatorio llamado 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. Una vez ya he explicado los inicios de la banda y la historia de cada uno de sus componentes pasamos a hablar del disco que toca hoy, que es el American Idiot, su séptimo álbum de estudio.
