Put this episode on if you want to get fired up (in the best way). We loved having author and influencer Drew Afualo in the studio going all the way off about the patriarchy and taking no shit from men (on the internet and IRL). She shares her journey of working in sports, getting fired (like all the cool girls do), and how she found her voice and created the platform she has today. She discusses how we all start out as Pick Me Girls, dating men when you hate men, the fallacy of the “leftover woman,” how to be more brave and find your voice, the one tip she has for anyone who wants to be an influencer, how men and women reflect differently after they go through a breakup, and so much more. Before Drew joins us, we talk about Rayna's meal prepping and the embarrassing thing Ashley did in her sleep. Enjoy! Follow Drew on Instagram @drewafualo and Tiktok @drewafualo, listen to her podcasts Two Idiot Girls and The Comment Section, and read her book Loud. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit cocomocoe.substack.comAs someone who has dedicated their whole professional career to marketing and understanding the power of the internet, I had a huge reckoning last week when I watched one of the best run marketing campaigns, Kamala HQ, not end up moving the needle at all when it came to voting for a President. Not only did Kamala Harris lose the electoral college, but for the first time in Donald Trump's three elections, he won the popular vote, as well. Kamala Harris put tons of effort into her marketing and her “Kamala HQ” TikTok account gained over 5 million followers in less than 3 months. She broke the internet with phrases like “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?” and Charli XCX tweeting that “kamala is brat”.It seems maybe the lesson here is that Kamala Harris focused on short-form marketing while Donald Trump focused on long-form marketing. He appeared on dozens of podcasts, some that lasted over 3 hours, while Harris went viral using trending sounds on TikTok and posting YouTube Shorts with Jennifer Lopez. In today's episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe”, we will be talking about the brilliant marketing campaign ran by Kamala Harris that did not end up helping her win the election, at all.Topics + Time Stamps:* The Power of Speech & Marketing - 0:00 * Why Americans love an “underdog” - 5:10 * Why celebrity endorsements from Taylor Swift, Beyonce, etc didn't move the needle - 13:00 * Why Trump embraced podcasts - 16:57* Why the right side is better at gaining popular podcasts and influencers as talking heads - 24:58* Why the top podcasts in the US are right wing - 27:30 * Why the left side pushes out influencers - 31:30* The political paradox that influencers like Drew Afualo and Brittany Broski have faced - 33:22* Why America was put off by Kamala HQ being run like a fan account - 44:00 The extended episode begins at 24:58 and is only for paying members of the Substack. Drew Afualo is a podcaster, author, and immensely popular TikTok creator. Drew studied sports journalism in college and originally aspired to be an on-air sports anchor. After graduating from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, she worked in PR before landing a digital content creator job at the NFL. At first, it seemed like a dream job, but the position wasn't all it was cracked up to be, and in January 2020, she was let go. When the pandemic hit, she was living at home with her parents and feeling further away than ever from her career dreams. One day, she started posting videos on TikTok on a whim. Viewers were immediately drawn to her hilarious, perfectly articulated takedowns of misogynistic comments. Her following grew quickly, at times gaining over 100,000 followers every couple of days. In the years since, she's continued to grow her audience and now has over 8 million followers on TikTok. Drew's also started two hit podcasts and authored a best-selling book, Loud: Accept Nothing Less Than the Life You Deserve. This year, she was named on The Hollywood Reporter's List of Most Influential Influencers.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

From the sexualized Kamala t-shirts to the way women are treated in areas such as caregiving, menstruation, and menopause, misogyny is pervasive in our society. Misogyny is defined as the hatred, contempt, or prejudice against women or girls, which keeps them at a lower social status than men, perpetuating the social roles of patriarchy. Misogyny can manifest in obvious and subtle ways, affecting women in various aspects of their lives. Feminist scholars like Andrea Dworkin and Kate Manne have shed light on the insidious nature of misogyny in our culture. Dworkin argues that society regards women as contemptible and subjects them to violence and discrimination, while Manne describes misogyny as a shock collar that enforces women's subordination in a patriarchal society. The demographics most affected by misogyny is also alarming, with BIPOC women experiencing its effects in conjunction with racism. From medical research to athletics and law enforcement, examples of misogyny in plain sight illustrate the lack of value placed on women in our society. Finally, there's the importance of fighting misogyny in the workplace, advocating for oneself, and celebrating International Women's Day. There are so many amazing women and influential figures like Drew Afualo, who uses her platform to combat misogyny and empower women. Join us as we unravel the complex web of misogyny, sexism, and patriarchy, and explore ways to challenge these harmful ideologies in our daily lives. The Bald and the Beautiful with Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamo
In the grand pantheon of lusciously loud cackles, there exists two gorgeous human specimens for whom the rules of physics do not even remotely apply. These two auditory angels, known colloquially as Drew Afualo and Trixie Mattel, fly right up to the sonic barrier, spit in its face, and emit laughs at such an octave that only the gods atop Mount Olympus can hear without permanent hearing loss. So close your windows, crank your speakers up to 11, and prepare yourselves for a blisteringly beautiful barrage of chuckles, chortles, and guffaws the likes of which mere mortals have never experienced. May is Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Month and we're celebrating with a guest that is sure to make you laugh hard. You might even recognize her infectious laugh from her viral videos on TikTok. Drew Afualo is one of today's most popular feminist content creators. Her no-BS approach to roasting misogynistic men on the internet has been met with folks flocking to her social pages to feel seen, heard and to rally around squelching hate, bigotry and misogyny. Her mission to stand up for the most marginalized among us is why she's one of Time Magazine's Next Generation Leaders, and that's not all. This March, the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment honored Drew with the Tastemaker Award. She's a content creator, women's rights advocate, podcast host, and author of the forthcoming book “LOUD: Accept Nothing Less Than the Life You Deserve.” Drew joins us today to discuss her journey to TikTok, Samoan identity, and the way comedy and culture have built a meaningful community online primed not just for likes, but also for action. Simply put: Drew is using her voice and in the process, helping all of us find our own.
