In flying an aircraft, there's a saying regarding priorities: “Aviate, Navigate, Communicate.” First, fly the plane.   Second, navigate to where you want to go. Third, communicate with others. This prioritizes the pilot's activities. This applies to founders. In the startup world, the founder must Operate, Direct, Communicate. The founder must first and foremost keep the startup running. Then the founder must maintain the direction to go in. Finally, the founder must communicate with others. Fundraising is an important activity, but it rests on the foundation of the startup running well. Before launching a fundraiser campaign, make sure the operations are in place and can run without the founder for the most part. Also, make sure the business is on track for the direction in which to go. Recovering When You Feel Lost When life gets in the way, it can be challenging to know what to do next. No matter how motivated you are to achieve your goal.  Thinking like a Pilot can save the day when that happens. A few years ago, I was a 150-hour pilot. I was flying a Cessna 172 to pick up my daughter for a weekend visit from the University of Florida—a trip I've made a dozen times. It had been an uneventful flight, then, about 15 minutes from landing, it happened… Maybe it was the heat of the day or the drone of the engine. In any case, I had the sensation that I had no idea where I was. I could see the airport in front of me, so I was aware of the situation. But I had no idea how to get to where I wanted to go. It was a terrifying feeling.  Knowing I had to call the Tower in minutes, I turned to my training and followed three rules that any pilot knows will get them back on track. The first is to continue to fly the airplane and stay safe. That may sound simple, but how many times have you wanted to cover your eyes and hide when things got challenging?  The second is to break through your confusion and figure out where you are on your journey. If you can keep yourself stable, you'll have time to snap out of any momentary rough spot and get focused. The third rule is to communicate with people who can help. With only a few minutes before entering the airspace illegally, I called Tower and said,  "I'm a low-hour pilot, a little South of the field, and I am confused. There's no emergency, but I could use some guidance." That simple commutation gave Air Traffic Control everything they needed. In minutes, they lined me up on the runway, and I impressed them with a perfect landing. "Not a bad landing for a lost pilot," they said. All I could do was laugh and be grateful. This week on the AVIATE with Shaesta podcast, I speak to Ezinne Uzo-Okoro, Assistant Director of Space Policy for the White House. With her incredible career in aerospace, I asked Ezinne specific questions around the AVIATE (Acknowledge, Vocalize, Inclusion, Act, and Evolve) theme.  From humble beginnings in Nigeria, where she sought solutions to everyday problems, Ezinne Uzo-Okoro has charted an extraordinary path. Her journey, marked by curiosity and resilience, led her from aspirations of being an inventor to the forefront of space exploration and policy-making. With a career that began at NASA in 2004, Ezinne has accumulated extensive expertise in space engineering systems and management. Her academic accomplishments are equally impressive, with three master's degrees and a historic doctorate in aeronautics and astronautics from MIT, making her the first and only Black woman to achieve this feat.In her current role as the assistant director of space policy in the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy, Uzo-Okoro is instrumental in shaping the nation's space priorities. Her days are filled with tackling challenges ranging from space debris to Earth's climate monitoring, reflecting a diverse and impactful portfolio.  Uzo-Okoro's vision extends beyond practical solutions; she envisions a future where space technology plays a critical role in advancing society and the global economy. Her dedication and pioneering spirit have not only led to significant contributions in the field of space exploration but also positioned her as a role model, inspiring others to pursue their dreams relentlessly.

In 2018, I was invited to be a speaker at a conference in the Midwest. Before I got on the stage to present my keynote, the session before me was talking about a new concept that I remember briefly hearing about as a student at Embry-Riddle, Advance Air Mobility (AAM). The speaker mentioned how AAM is the future of aviation, and that it will revolutionize air travel as we know it. AAM is known as the development, integration, and utilization of new airborne transportation systems, typically involving electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, drones, and other innovative aerial vehicles. These systems are designed to operate in urban, suburban, and rural environments. Since that conference in 2018, so many developments have transpired in this sector. Key Features of the AAM sectors include; eVTOLs: These are aircraft that can take off and land vertically like a helicopter but transition to forward flight like a plane, predominantly powered by electric propulsion.Urban Air Mobility (UAM): A subset of AAM focusing on urban environments. UAM seeks to alleviate ground traffic congestion by taking advantage of the airspace above cities.Decentralized Infrastructure: Instead of large central airports, AAM emphasizes smaller vertiports or landing pads scattered throughout urban and suburban areas.Autonomous Operations: While initial operations may have human pilots, the goal for many AAM solutions is to eventually operate autonomously, which will require advanced autonomous flight systems and robust air traffic management solutions. The AAM sector on a global scale was valued at $8.2 billion in 2022. It is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 20% by 2032 with a valuation to reach about $68.1 billion. Furthermore, investments in AAM have reached $4.8 billion in 2021, with new innovative companies launching each year in pursuit of the next successful eVTOL to hit the market. Specifically, there are over 200 companies globally in the race to develop eVTOL aircraft. The primary driver in the AAM sector is the Urban Air Mobility market which is projected to rise from 3.8 billion to 38.5 billion by 2030. In terms of women in this sector, McKinsey & Company shared on its blog this year how women are advancing in Future Air Mobility (FAM). Here are a few key points the blog shared. Sustainable aviation saw the biggest improvement in gender diversity, with the number of women and nonbinary people increasing from 13 percent to 18 percent.Other segments, including manned advanced air mobility/eVTOL vehicles and small drones, showed smaller gains.Companies that develop supersonic and hypersonic technology regressed, with the number of women and nonbinary people falling from 23 percent to 20 percent, although the small sample size means that the departure of a few senior leaders could sway the numbers in a meaningful way.Among regions, North America has the most diverse leadership teams in both gender (20 percent female or nonbinary) and ethnic diversity—defined as the non-majority group in a company's home country (18 percent).Technical roles have seen the biggest increase in diversity for both genders (going from 5 percent to 14 percent female or nonbinary) and people from ethnic minorities (going from 12 percent to 16 percent).Despite this progress, women and nonbinary people remain significantly underrepresented in technical roles at FAM companies, as they are in many other industries. Our special guest who will launch us into season five of the AVIATE with Shaesta podcast is Elan Head, a familiar voice in AAM. After a 24-year career serving as a fighter pilot and senior military leader, Kim “KC” Campbell retired from the United States Air Force and is now the Managing Director of Victory Strategies, a leadership development firm, and serves on the board for Special Operators Transition Foundation. While serving in the military, Kim flew more than 100 combat missions in both Iraq and Afghanistan. She is the author of the best-selling book Flying in the Face of Fear: A Fighter Pilot's Lessons on Leading with Courage.Many fighter pilots choose to fly commercially once they leave the military. As Kim reflected on the reasons she wanted to retire, she realized that a career in commercial piloting would not give her the stability she was seeking. With a husband and two young children, Kim wanted to spend more time with her family. Kim's final job in the military was Director of the Center for Character and Leadership Development. In this role, she helped mold and develop the next generation of leaders at the Air Force Academy. Because Kim had tried to retire previously, she had the time to reflect and build her network before leaving the military. Kim encourages transitioning service members to be open to new opportunities and have confidence in their ability to figure new things out.  Kim addresses the civilian perception of a military leader – a reserved, credible, strong, powerful and closed-minded individual. Kim argues that many of the best leaders she encountered while serving were credible, humble, approachable and willing to ask questions. The military is known for challenging its leaders to find solutions in dynamic situations. Military leaders tend to be adaptable, flexible and creative problem-solvers in the civilian workforce. Kim outlines several leadership strategies in her book. After studying data and reflecting on her own career, Kim believes the best way to influence and lead is pairing credibility with warmth. By warmth, she means the ability to authentically interact with people and listen to new ideas. This strategy creates trustworthiness and approachability. Another strategy comes directly from her experience as a fighter pilot: Aviate, Navigate and Communicate. Aviate is the ability to focus on the most important issue at hand. Navigate is figuring out where you are going and what you need to do once you have control of the situation. Communicating with others not only lets them know about the issue but provides them with an opportunity to assist. A lesson Kim continues to learn and relearn is the ability to ask for help or accept assistance when it is offered. In the times that she has accepted help from others, she has been a better leader, mom and spouse. She encourages others to accept help during the transition process.Kim reflects on her dual-military marriage. She and her husband learned very early on that they needed to communicate openly about their needs and wants before they became larger issues. When I launched the AVIATE with Shaesta podcast, it was a priority to find women in government who could talk about their career journey and their impact on the industry. In my research, I came across the first female to serve as the FAA Acting Administrator, Linda Hall Daschle. Daschle became the first woman to serve as the FAA Acting Administrator three years later. Mental health in aviation is a critical issue affecting pilots and the entire aviation ecosystem. The high-pressure environment, long hours, irregular schedules, and extended periods away from home can cause significant stress on pilots, leading to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and burnout.There is limited research on mental health issues among pilots, but studies suggest that pilots may be at higher risk than the general population. Here are some statistics based on available research:A survey of 1,848 commercial pilots in 2015 found that 4.1% of respondents reported having suicidal thoughts within the previous two weeks, compared to 3.7% of adults in the general population.The same survey found that 12.6% of pilots reported experiencing symptoms of depression, compared to 7.1% of adults in the general population.A 2017 study of 2,500 pilots in the United States found that 29% of respondents had experienced symptoms of depression within the previous two weeks, and 4.1% had experienced suicidal thoughts within the last two weeks.The same study found that 12.6% of respondents had been diagnosed with depression at some point, and 4.1% had been diagnosed with a personality disorder.It's important to note that these statistics are based on self-reported data and may not reflect the full extent of mental health issues among pilots.The industry has traditionally taken a reactive approach to mental health, addressing it only after an incident or accident. However, we do see improvements with airlines and aviation regulatory bodies implementing more proactive measures to prevent and manage mental health issues among pilots.One such measure is the implementation of peer-support programs that allow pilots to confidentially share their concerns with other pilots who have undergone similar experiences. Additionally, airlines provide mental health resources and training to pilots, including access to mental health professionals and stress management techniques.The FAA has also implemented regulations that require pilots to disclose their mental health status to their employers and undergo regular mental health assessments. These regulations aim to detect and manage mental health issues early and prevent them from escalating into more severe problems. But as pilots know, losing your medical can cost you a great deal of time, money, resources, and sometimes your job."Pilots believe that being vulnerable, and sharing feelings or struggles, such as anxiety, depression, and chronic stress, would be at best humiliating or embarrassing, and, at worst, the end of their flying career."Reyne O'Shaughnessy, a retired airline pilot and author of "This Is Your Captain Speaking," shared in a recent interview. Captain Reyne was featured on an AVIATE roundtable last year, focusing on mental health in aviation.Each season, I intentionally dedicate an episode to discussing mental health in aviation. When I read about Tammy Jo Shults, a retired Navy fighter pilot and commercial airline pilot who grew up on a ranch in Texas, I immediately knew she would be an influential guest on this podcast. When I further learned Tammie Jo's story and how she gained national recognition for safely landing Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 after an engine failure in April 2018, I invited her to share her story and anchor our conversation around mental health.Shults was one of the first female fighter pilots in the U.S. Navy and flew the F/A-18 Hornet in combat operations during Operation Desert Storm. She later became a commercial airline pilot and joined Southwest Airlines in 1993, where she continued to fly until her retirement in 2020. Shults' skill and composure during the emergency landing of Flight 1380 were widely praised and credited with saving the lives of the passengers and crew on board.Tammie Jo, welcome!

Episode Notes Lieutenant Colonel Mark Hasara is a former United States Air Force KC-135 instructor pilot and veteran of four wars. As Deputy Commander of the cadre tasked with building the world's only TOPGUN-style school for the Air Force KC-135 fleet, Mark and the cadre developed the 509th Weapons Squadron, the only PhD-level school on global air refueling operations. Eight days after 9/11, Mark began a series of deployments to the Middle East planning and executing air refueling operations for all six coalition nations as Chief of the Air Refueling Control Team from an allied Air Operations Center near Riyadh Saudi Arabia. In twenty-six days, this team of 30 US and International airmen planned and executed operations transferring enough fuel to allow a Ford F-150 truck to make 2685 round trips to the moon. Mark was selected as a curriculum director at National Defense University's Joint and Combined Warfighter School, training US and international officers in the campaign and military operations. Leaving the Air Force in 2007, Mark led a Systems Engineering team designing cockpits for military aircraft working for Rockwell Collins. His autobiographical book Tanker Pilot: Lessons from the Cockpit was published by Simon & Schuster in November 2017. Mark began hosting the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast in October 2021, educating and entertaining his audience with flying stories but more importantly what did aviators learn from those extreme and extraordinary events in the air? A gifted stage speaker, Mark instructs audiences on the three words every pilot uses to get through any bad situation: Aviate, Navigate, and Communicate. By the 11th grade, Tsboui had created a few resourceful apps, like an app for the Apple Watch that guides users through CPR and Lilac, where non-English speaking parents can access childcare and housing resources, and finally, the app called Pilot Fast Track. Zahra has a compelling story that I resonate with. In 1972, Hirani and her family were expelled from their home in Uganda and were placed in a refugee camp in the United Kingdom. Eventually, Zahra and her family settled in Canada, where she would spend her early years figuring out her place in the world and her passions. With her parent's support, Zahra enrolled at the University of Waterloo, where she pursued a bachelor's in mathematics. Waterloo provided Zahra with a nurturing and unbiased environment, which was vital since she spent most of her adolescent life being bullied by her classmates because she was an immigrant. After fearlessly pursuing her love for numbers, Zahra's career includes accounting, auditing, and business advisory services to domestic and international companies. A-10 fighter pilot Kim Campbell picked up many leadership lessons over the course of a 24 year Air Force career. Some came in a “crucible moment” over Baghdad on April 7, 2003. While providing close air support for troops in contact, her aircraft was struck by a surface to air missile, knocking out all of the plane's hydraulics. Ejecting over Baghdad was not a preferred option. In a matter of seconds she was able to analyze the situation and switch to “manual reversion”, a procedure that is difficult even under ideal conditions. She described flying an A-10 without hydraulics like driving a dump truck without power steering. Kim was able to nurse her damaged plane 300 miles back to base, landing without brakes. Maintainers counted more than 600 holes in her aircraft. She would be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for that mission. The lessons learned from that experience and her years of leading airmen form the basis for her new book “Flying in the Face of Fear: A Fighter Pilot's Lessons on Leading With Courage.” There are many great takeaways in the book including the phrase “Aviate, Communicate, Navigate.” In critical situations it is important to address the most important issue first – like keeping your A-10 in the air (Aviate). Navigate - gain situational awareness and communicate – ask for help. Kim told her father she was going to become an astronaut after witnessing the Challenger shuttle disaster. In an early example of the grit she exhibited during her entire life, Kim wouldn't take no from the Air Force Academy and would be selected to be the Cadet Wing Commander her senior year. Kim's husband Scott was also an A-10 pilot and we spend some time discussing the challenges that arise in a dual military marriage. It's about stepping up to take action in the face of fear and having the courage to respond even when you're scared.”

Our guest today, who will conclude season two of the AVIATE with Shaesta podcast, is Colonel  Nicole Malachowski. At age 5, during a time when women were not permitted to fly for the military, Nicole knew that someday, she would fly a fighter jet. Finishing fourth in her class, Nicole graduated from pilot training at Columbus AFB, Mississippi, and was selected for the only F-15E slot allotted to her class. Nicole has served in a few operational tours and went into combat for the United States Air Force. In 2005, Nicole made history by becoming the first woman to fly for the Thunderbirds, completing 140 performances, and inspiring a generation of women aviators.  In my conversation, I ask Nicole about her remarkable career and how she managed her mental health along the way. We also discuss Nicole's physical health, especially after she was suddenly diagnosed with a tick-borne illness, which changed her life and career trajectory.

Joining me on this episode of the AVIATE with Shaesta podcast is the CEO and President of the National Aviation Hall of Fame, Amy Spowart. Amy grew up in central Pennsylvania and took a non-traditional route in aviation. Her first flight experience was when she was 19 years old on a TWA flight. Although Amy had her hesitations about flying for the first time, this was a big deal back home in her hometown, where people didn't travel much. During her twenties, Amy lived in England, and when she came back to America, she decided to enroll in College. Believing that she wasn't a capable student, Amy found herself drawn to history, resulting in her obtaining two degrees at the same time. Her passion for acknowledging the past opened the door to aviation and launched her career at the NAHF.In our conversation, I ask Amy about her upbringing, her love for connecting with people, her 22+ year career and leadership with NAHF, and her contributions to women in aviation.

As I look back on my flying career, I often think about some of the quotes I've heard along the way. Aviate, Navigate, Commumnicate, Monitor the freq. before you speak. Speed is life, altitude is insurance. And, I'll never not be able to hear Martha King say “Please, stay out of the trees.” But, there's one quote that seems to keep coming up time and time again. It's written on the walls of flight schools, seen on plaques and awards, quoted in films, and used in just about every piece of learn to fly marketing material I've ever seen. And that's because it's so beautiful. So expressive of the sentiment we all feel when aviation's running through your veins, and spoken by one of the all time great artists, scientists, and thinkers of the last thousand years.
