Pete Krebs has played guitar in so many influential Portland bands that it's hard to list them all: Hazel, Golden Delicious, The Stolen Sweets, The Portland Playboys, and Thee Catnip Brothers. He started his journey playing in punk bands and now he plays Western Swing at the rodeo every year in Pendleton, Oregon. He's a two-time inductee into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame, and he's survived cancer twice. I met Pete for the first time in 1992 when our bands played together in Virginia at a club called The Insect Club. It was his band, Hazel, my band, Five Eight, and the Spinanes. Someone got naked onstage and we almost got beat up and very nearly didn't get paid. The next time we played together was in Portland and that night I heard Pete play a song that has haunted me for 30 years. In this interview, I finally find out the name of it and the original artist. Wild. You can find the infamous photo that brought all of this together on the Crash and Ride Facebook page. You can read more about Pete and hear a bunch of his music here: https://www.heypetekrebs.com/ As promised, here's the Corona Virus Relief Fund set up by MusiCares: https://www.grammy.com/musicares/get-help/musicares-coronavirus-relief And also here's a link to the Athens area musician's Covid 19 relief fund set up by Nuci's space here: https://www.nuci.org/get-help/

Welcome to Marti’s Music Kitchen, the Fun Music and Food Podcast, where anything can happen! I’m super excited about my guests from the award-winning Americana/Folk duo, Julie Amici and Dean Mueller. They are the 2019 recipient of the Cascade Blues Association “Back What You Believe In” award. This award is given to a group or individual who has gone above and beyond to demonstrate a commitment to the blues community. So we started the program within that organization. ... We just try to bring professional, live shows that we would have at the theatre, or other places that have super-high-quality shows and bring them to senior centers, and other places where there is no way they could see a show like that.” Dean is a bass player, major foodie, and curator of music at the award-winning Lake Theater & Cafe. He strongly believes in knowing where his food comes from and uses local sources whenever possible. Today, he’ll prepare his traditional Christmas dinner, Roasted Bone Marrow and mouth-watering Porcini Braised Short Ribs with Rosemary Mashed Potatoes. We’ll learn the secret to making his flavorful mashed potatoes, and will taste wine from three of their favorite local wineries. How did this duo cultivate such a network of musicians that give back to communities from Portland to the coast? Follow me into this fabulous kitchen . . and let’s find out! Thanks for coming back for another Coffeeshop Conversation at World Cup Coffee and Tea, NW 18th and Glisan in Portland. We’ve got a special episode today. With me is Oregon Music Hall of Fame Member, percussionist, composer and band leader, Bobby Torres. Now most of us know Bobby from his many years here in Portland, but not everybody is aware that he had a long and thriving career first with Joe Cockers bands, and then with lots and lots of other top musicians. He even toured with Tom Jones Did you know he played the first Woodstock festival as a member of Joe Cocker’s band? Today, we’re going to hear all about. The behind the scenes stuff that nobody but an eyewitness can tell us. Let’s dive in.
Welcome back to World Cup Coffee & Tea at NW 18th and Glisan for another Oregon Music News Coffeeshop Conversation. With me today is a singular gentleman, Oregon Music Hall of Fame member Calvin Walker. He was one of our most favorite bringers of the funk. As a singer and a drummer in a vibrant Soul and Funk scene, he used to work six nights a week. Later he was the head of the Musicians Union. I met him when he was Development Director at KMHD when it was at Mt. Hood Community College, and was the voice of reason in a dysfunctional environment. He stayed at Mt. Hood when the station moved its operations to OPB. He’s now a counselor. He has a wealth of stories and is a fountain of musical knowledge. He’s funny too.
May 18, 2016 We;re in the coffeshop again. As always, it’s World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan for another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation. With me today is an Oregon Music Hall of Fame member…known to all as the Boogie Cat, the best dressed man in town…Norman Sylvester. An Oregonian since 1957, he’s been playing music for almost as long as he’s lived here. He’s a Blues and Soul guitarist, singer, composer and ambassador to the world for Northwest music. But how much do you know about him? He’s got a great life story, inspiring and worth spending the whole hour with us. I ran into him at last Sunday’s memorial for Sweet Baby James Benton, a friend of his. He played there and when I was talking to him, invited him to the coffeeshop today. And he said yes.
November 1, 2016 Back in the cupping room at World Cup Coffee and Tea again for another in the endless series of OMN’s Coffeeshop Conversations. I’m Tom D’Antoni and with me today is the legendary and extremely celebrated Blues guitarist, composer and producer Terry Robb. He’s in the Oregon Music Hall of fame. He won the Cascade Blues Association’s Best Guitarist Muddy Award so many times, they had to stop their membership from nominating him any more and named the damned award after him. It’s always fun to catch up with Terry. I have the feeling we’re just going to sit here and bullshit about music, but first we’ll talk about Cool on the Bloom, his new album. We’ll hear a track from it, too.
November 21, 2017 Welcome back to World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan, home of OMN’s Coffeeshop Conversations. Today we’ve got Paul Brainard, a very recent inductee into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. If there is a more versatile musician around here I haven’t met him. This weekend (November 25-27) he’s hearding the horn section of the band at the annual Next Waltz show at the Alberta Rose Theatre.. You may know him better as that steel guitarist who plays everything from Ernest Tubb to Led Zeppelin to Thelonious Monk on this instrument. He’s a native Portlander and has an awful lot to say about his music and his instruments. How did he react to his Oregon Music Hall of Fame honor? How did he get from being a horn player to fame as a steel guitarist?
April 28, 2016 An apology to Ms. Day and the rest of you. The author of this piece made a stupid mistake when recording and it sounds like we're in the bottom of a large metal cylinder. The author of this article feels like an idiot. Sorry. --The Author of this Article Welcome to World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan for another Oregon Music News Coffeeshop Conversation. In the coffeeshop with me today is Valerie Day, who with her husband John Smith are Nu Shooz, the Oregon Music Hall of Fame band who’s tune, “I Can’t Wait” is still, after thirty years, still one of those tunes that can easily get stuck in your head all day. And it does all over the world, every single day. I’ll ask her how she feels about being responsible for that. They have a new album called Bagtown coming out in May. There’s more than one story behind that. Coffeshop Conversations are always one-on-one…even this one. I told her that if Kate Power would do one with the Steve Einhorn, than she could too. And she did.
March 30, 2016 Welcome back to World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Gilsan in Portland for another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation. I’m Tom D’Antoni and this time I’ve got with me J. Michael Kearsey of the Brothers of Baladi, a band celebrating forty years of making their own special brand of Middle Eastern music. Their new album is called Gravity of Love…we’ll find out what that means. It has been eight years since the last Brothers of Baladi album and this one is crafted with much care and patience over a four-year period. It also has a new twist. There are electronics on this one. A new step which we’ll also find out about. Michael is also Secretary of the Oregon Music Hall of Fame and we’ll find out the latest from them.
October 8, 2015 Hi there, we’re back in the coffeeshop this week…that being World Cup Coffee and Tea at Northwest 18th and Glisan in Portland. This time…in the days before he will be inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame…drummer Brian Foxworth is with us. A member of the Curtis Salgado band for the past five years, also a member of the Roseland Hunters where he shows off his vocal skills…he plays with a lot of people and constantly. He also plays in church…a lot. And he’s helping put together a reunited, rejuvenated version of the famed Portland Soul band Pleasure. And that isn’t half of it.
August 6, 2015 The coffeeshop gets funky today. Joining me at World Cup Coffee and Tea at Northwest 18th & Glisan Michael Quinby who is the leader, guitarist and vocalist of the Roseland Hunters who have been blasting out funk for over a year on a regular basis and are about to release This Time, their first album, produced by Steve Berlin. It drops on August 21. The Hunters have some of Oregon’s best musicians including Damian Erskine on bass, Reinhardt Melz on drums, and the newest inductee into the Oregon Music Hall of fame Brian Foxworth, moving off the the drum kit to play percussion and sing.
April 2, 2015 It’s another Oregon Music News Coffeeshop Conversation and, as always, it happens at World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th & Glisan in Portland. I’ve got drummer Carlton Jackson with me, one of the most versatile drummers around…Soul, Funk, Blues, Jazz, Rock…you name it, he’s played it. He's a member of the Oregon Music Hall of Fame and co-leader of the Jackson-Mills Big Band. A native Portlander, a fellow KMHD DJ and one of my favorite people. He's played with Leroy Vinnegar and many many other of our best. He's one of our best!
This week’s show: curveballs and home runs. New developments are on deck in the saga of Oregon’s art glass makers, and for one act trying to get recognition for its entirely ironic band name. Plus we bring back a favorite from last year, to get you primed for Wordstock. Hope you’ve got your helmet on — all the best bombs are dropping! Thanks for helping us make this listener-supported show every week. Give a gift, before you do anything else this weekend. Supreme Court Will Hear The Slants Trademark Case — 1:18The U.S. Supreme Court says it will hear a case pitting Portland-based all-Asian electro-rock band The Slants against the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The band has been fighting to trademark its name since 2011. The PTO denied the request on the grounds the name is racially disparaging. Bandleader Simon Tam says it’s unconstitutional for government to use offensive speech as a basis for rejecting trademarks. The high court refused to hear a similar case involving the Washington Redskins, but a ruling in the Slants’ favor could help the team. Listen Back: Ursula LeGuin at Wordstock 2015 — 3:15The Library of America has just published some key early work by literary great Ursula K. Le Guin. “The Complete Orsinia” is a fascinating early lab in which Le Guin explored life under oppressive regimes. We thought it was a good time to listen back to our conversation with Le Guin at Wordstock 2015. Le Guin discusses her process, her guide to writing, “Steering the Craft”, and more. (You can find a longer version of our interview here.)Uroboros To Close In Early 2017 — 13:52Portland art glass manufacturer Uroboros just announced this week the company plans to close its plant on North Kerby Ave. early in 2017. Glass has been made there for more than 43 years. The company’s president Eric Lovell cited market conditions, the real estate value of the central location, and the cost of new environmental regulations. Lovell also said that his own impending retirement as a factor. Glass artists including San Diego’s Cathy Coverley called the loss of Uroboros “terrifying.” Portland-born Writer Fighting To Save Harlem Landmark — 17:04Portland native Renee Watson, now with the I, Too Collective in New York, was in town this week for some fundraising. Langston Hughes was the heart and soul of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and ‘30s. His brownstone on East 127th street in Harlem is a national landmark but it’s been mostly empty for decades. As Harlem’s real estate scene goes upscale, Watson is leading the effort to preserve the building. We listen back to an August conversation she had with NPR - Weekend Edition’s Scott Simon. In Other Words, Portlandia No Longer Welcome — 22:14The feminist bookstore In Other Words servers its ties with the IFC series, Portlandia. Looks like Candace and Toni will be looking for new digs. Any suggestions?Pete Krebs’ Autumn Trifecta — 23:41A huge month for singer, songwriter, and rock & roll survivor Pete Krebs: he’ll be inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame on October 8th, and is launching two new records at the same time — a career retrospective, called “Hey Pete Krebs” and a new Hazel live album, excavated from 1993 recordings. Krebs earned his chops in Portland’s 80’s punk rock scene, and has been a mainstay on country, jazz, and indie stages around town ever since.(photo cred. Jeremy Balderson)
