Larry Crane is a recording engineer, founder of Tape Op magazine, and official archivist for the Elliott Smith estate. In late 2024, Crane gave a new remaster to Smith’s final album, 'From a Basement on the Hill.' Smith died during the making of the album and the record was finished by his friends and released posthumously. I first met Alan Parsons in 2004, when I interviewed him for Tape Op issue #42. We've been lucky enough to work together on Recording Academy presentations and meet up socially a few times after that, and I always thought we'd have fun doing a podcast, and as it was now 20 years later, it felt like a good time. Alan had also built his ParSonics Studio on his ranch in California, and a deluxe box set reissue of the Alan Parsons Project's Pyramid album was coming out soon, so we had quite a lot to talk about. ................................. FULL TRANSCRIPT ................................. Hi, I'm Pascale Gibon. Welcome to episode 286 of the Everyday life balance show. This episode covers the last principle of the Yes! to Love principle series related to the Yes! to Love philosophy. As the author of the bestselling book Yes! To™ Love, I am so honoured to share these principles with you. Thank you for tuning in. The last Yes! to Love principle I want to share is to embrace the power of love with all your might. This principle is an invitation and reminder to live in the energy of Love. Sometimes our minds and behaviour are not attuned to Love. However, you must return to Love with the conviction that it is the spiritual answer, the source you seek and need to solve your workbook of problems. From my experience, this is the highest path because Love is blissful and brings peace. The source of Love is divine or of a higher nature. The closer you are to that source, the more Love will flow. As you become a vessel of Love you radiate light and shine brightly. Just think about how you feel when you see a good deed or people smiling and being happy. It could be the people close to you or total strangers. Love is enchanting. Since Love is your inherent nature, the loving energy is always with you. However, certain behaviours do not reflect loving energy because we blame our circumstances. You may feel bitter, disappointed, vengeful, angry and frustrated because things are not going your way and you are full of resentment. Since these negative emotions are energy in motion, remember that you can shift them at will as you develop the habit of living your life daily in loving energy. Love comes first. Such a resolve requires commitment. Your committed decision is to be loving, loveable and loved unconditionally. This decision means that you invite more Love into your life. The closer you are to your true divine nature, the more loving, loved, and loveable you will be. Remember the example that children give us. They are totally in control of their emotions. They cry when they demand something and quickly change into a big smile and gentleness when they receive the reward, like a big bag of sweets. :) In adulthood, we forget our ability to control our emotions. This is a new habit you need to familiarise yourself with. You may wonder how you can embrace the power of Love more fully. You embrace the power of Love when you say YES! to living your life in a loving energy every day. Here are eight ways you can embrace the power of Love more fully. You embrace the power of Love when you feel peaceful: explore who you are to get inner peace and live with a calm mind daily. 2. You embrace the power of Love when you grow in compassion for yourself: be gentle and kind to yourself. Some negative self-talk can be very harmful. Reconnect to your inner child, your innocent, loving and full-of-life three-year-old. Lovingly see yourself as a mother who would care for a child. You are here to live an extraordinary life. 3. You embrace the power of Love when you grow in compassion for others: Stephen Covey, the author of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” said: “Seek first to understand then to be understood.” Remember this principle whenever you find yourself in a conflictual relationship. Seek first to understand then to be understood. This belief is compassion. You widen your perspective and open your heart as a proponent of peace. 4. You embrace the power of Love when you live in gratitude: say, thank you every day with sincerity for the gift of life and anything else you are grateful for to show your gratitude and attract even more goodness. I talk more extensively about adopting an attitude of gratitude in episode 283 of this series, which is the 7th principle. 5. You embrace the power of Love when you give unconditionally: this resolve means that you give without expecting anything in return. Our love in romantic relationships, for example, can be very conditional: "I will do this because you did this for me" etc. However, by law, you do not always get something back from the person you gave in the first place. 6. You embrace the power of Love when you learn to forgive: learning to forgive sets you free from the past. Let go of the chains that bind you to someone's actions that hurt your spirit. 7. You embrace the power of Love when you make contributions unconditionally: when the suffering of others moves us, we intuitively open our hearts and contribute to their wellbeing. May it be supporting causes like water wells, supplying food, or providing education or shelter in countries that need it the most. Love that stretches beyond our needs creates miracles. Maya Angelou said the following heartwarming quote: “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” 8. You embrace the power of Love when you understand and trust that it is the answer to a happy and fulfilling life: since Love is the answer you seek, wear Love everywhere you go. Return to Love every time you feel you have created resistance to it and distanced yourself from it in your thoughts, feelings and deeds. Embrace the power of Love, for it is our gift for harmonious living and better relationships. Moreover, I am convinced that it is our gift to create a better world and uplift universal consciousness. Each of us has our part to play. Each of us has to be the change we want to see in the world. Larry Crane said: “Life is so much easier when you're in the feeling stream of love.” I totally agree. What about you? Reflect on whether you are in the feeling stream of Love. What I have just shared is Love in action. :) I hope you enjoyed this episode. Ryan Brown is a professional drummer and percussionist in Los Angeles, California. In addition to his gig as the drummer for Dweezil Zappa, he plays with Los Angeles-based bands The Young Royals, Black Belt Karate, SexTapes, AM/FM, The Fuxedos and Madras, and in the bands of artists Arrica Rose, Karem Malicki-Sanchez, Colin Armstrong, Josh Canova, Space Oddity and rapper J Naugh-T. He has toured with Taiwanese pop star Chyi-Chin and L.A. bands OWL and Ultraviolet, performed on “Last Call with Carson Daly” with Ingrid Michaelson and played the Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland with R&B artist Niki Haris. He has recorded tracks and albums with producers Marti Frederiksen, Mark Hudson, Mikal Reid, Russ Irwin, Rob Seals, Glen Laughlin, Rob Shrock, Brian Dobbs, Klaus Derendorf, Brian Paturalski, Billy Morrison, Larry Crane and David Weisberg, including the hit single “The Real Thing” from Bo Bice. Ryan can also be heard on releases by Foreigner, Circus Diablo, Hannah Montana, Clay Aiken, Cassie Davis, Nick Lachey, Jesse McCartney, Heather Graham, Suzie McNeil (Rock Star INXS) and Stephanie McIntosh, as well as on the movie soundtracks for Ice Age: Continental Drift (Adam Schlesinger), Kung Fu Panda (Hans Zimmer and John Powell) and The Dark Knight (Hans Zimmer). We explore his journey from Chico CA and his early band Vomit Launch, their successes and ultimate demise, his initial hatred of Portland to the full embrace it is today, and how meeting amazing people is the main thrill for him with Tape Op, a magazine with a subscription rate the biggies would kill, or die for.
Larry Crane is a recording engineer and owner of Portland's Jackpot! Recording Studio, and the editor for Tape Op Magazine. He is also the music catalog archivist for Elliot Smith, following the singers death in 2003. Hear about his journey to Portland from Northern California in the early 1990s, and how his love of music lead to opening up what has become known as Portland's most important recording studio.
