For episode 12 of Steel, we meet Laurel Premo, an incredible folk musician from Traverse City, Michigan. Laurel's 2021 album, 'Golden Loam,' is a collection of deep, dark folk tunes played on solo electric guitar and lap steel, and the sound is completely her own. The record is spare, brooding, rhythmically deep, and completely captivating. When I learned Laurel was coming to New York, I jumped at the chance to meet her and talk about her musical life. In this episode, we discuss Laurel's musical roots in Northern Michigan, where she played fiddle in Finnish Barn dances; how she picked up the lap steel and adapted it to her style of music; her immersion in Scandinavian folk traditions; how chanting is at the heart of her musical practice; and lots more. laurelpremo.com laurelpremo.bandcamp.com Steel Ep 12 Spotify Playlist Steel Ep 12 Youtube Playlist This podcast is mixed by Armen Bazarian and brought to you by the Fretboard Journal magazine. www.fretboardjournal.com

Welcome to Season 4, Episode 40! You may not know what a steel guitar is, but once you hear the sound it makes, we guarantee you've heard music where it's used. Originating in Hawaii, the steel guitar has gone on to spark innovation and integration into bluegrass, blues, jazz, country, and more. In this episode, we share the origins of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar as well as some of the key players and events that made Hawaiian music so popular in the early 1900s. To learn more, we recommend checking out recordings of Sol Ho'opi'i, King Nawahi, Kalama's Quartet, Sam Ku West, and other masters of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar. You can also read the book Kika Kila: How the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Changed the Sound of Modern Music by John Troutman. We also take time to discuss the big night of Emmy wins for Shōgun as well as the historic season for Shohei Ohtani. We close out this episode by talking about what we're watching… DiDi the movie and Sarah Kinsley in concert. This week, I sit down with the one and only Amico Demuzio. Amico is a steel guitar pickin, banjo strummin, guitar playin son of a gun from Beaver County! He has been playing music since he could walk and, currently, Amico is one of the amazing players that make up Charles Wesly Godwin's band The Allegheny High. - Amico has a wild story. A couple years ago, he started touring with Charles Wesly Godwin as the Merch Guy! You'd find him at the tables slingin' Lean Mean T's and and records. He spent a couple years working his way through the ranks of a merch game until an opportunity came where The Allegheny High needed a Pedal Steel player to fill the shoes of Read Connolly. Being a life long musician, Amico Demuzio stepped right up to the plate and the rest became history. This week, we sit down and talk about it all. From the first time he picked up an instrument to the very first show with Charles Wesly Godwin and The Allegheny High… and how his gear didn't work for it! Niall Murphy is Oh Boland, from Tuam, Co Galway, and currently based in Dublin. They've released three albums since the band started over 10 years ago - third LP Western Leisure came out May 31. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, Niall talks through all the songs on the album, touring the US, and their journey as a band. Plus going country! Oh Boland launch Western Leisure at Bello Bar, supported by Stupid Son, on Friday, July 5. Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/oh-boland-stupid-sonwestern-leisure-lp-launchbello-bar-tickets-922903117067 Buy Oh Boland - Western Leisure: https://ohboland.bandcamp.com/album/western-leisure --- Press release: Oh Boland's sound has been described as having a “rare potency”, one that exists in their live shows and two records, their 2016 debut Spilt Milk which featured in Pitchfork's “Best Underground Garage Punk Albums” of that year and its equally visceral successor, Cheap Things. Over the course of the Tuam-via-Dublin-based band's lifespan, Oh Boland has existed in several guises and their forthcoming third record heralds a compelling new phase as the solo project of founding member, Niall Murphy. The self-produced Western Leisure (mixed and mastered by Mikey Young of Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Total Control) signifies an electrifying artistic evolution spurred by Murphy's unwavering musical curiosity which hears him experiment with wistful Country motifs alongside Oh Boland's synonymous noise-rock tendencies. Written over a handful of years, many of which were spent in solitude, away from familiar recording practices and live performances, the making of this record presented Murphy with opportunities to wholeheartedly engage in musical and personal exploration. Following a shift in Oh Boland's line-up in 2018 and a period of touring, Murphy worked alone to create demos that would eventually grow into these ten simultaneously invigorating and introspective compositions. Drawing from a number of influences such as Robert Wyatt's 1974 LP Rock Bottom, Arthur Russell, and Pavement's sprawling and ambitious Wowee Zowee, Murphy describes how Western Leisure was shaped by a renewed approach and process to songwriting. “I felt unencumbered when I was writing these songs. I suppose, there's sometimes an insular nature to making music, to have the necessary headspace to write. During that time, I was alone with a lot of records, listening to some different things and found myself naturally drifting outside of the lines a little bit to what I was used to doing.” Produced by Mark Chester Recorded at Start Together, Belfast, September 2021 Mixed and Mastered by Mikey Young Words and Music by Niall Murphy Niall Murphy- Guitars, Drums, Piano, Organ, Rhodes, Steel Guitar, Vocals Ross Hamer- Bass, Vocals Artwork by Joe Casey Digitised by Aoife Anna Mullan

About Us: Business owners, Chamber directors, industry leaders, Main Street Directors, school and hospital leaders discuss what's happening in North MS with station owner, Melinda Marsalis. Interviews are recorded in Ripley, MS at Sun Bear Studio, broadcast every Tuesday at 11 am on The Shark 102.3 FM Radio and added here to help you stay informed. If you would like to be considered for an interview, you can call or email Melinda. The Shark 102.3 FM Radio Station and Sun Bear Studio, located in Ripley, MS, are owned by Chris and Melinda Marsalis. Chris and Melinda have a passion for community development and love all of the amazing things that are going on in North Mississippi. This Week: Melinda sits down with Hawaiian Steel Guitarist Geri Valdriz during his visit in Ripley, MS. Listen to Geri's journey from Family Court Judge to Steel Guitarist to Radio DJ in Maui, Hawai'i. During their interview, Geri Valdriz gives his perspective of having a hard time during his initial visits to Ripley, MS because he was amazed at how much people here talked. He explains that he came to realize that the constant communication was the basis for connection to establish "ties" to each other. He says he learned to slow down and listen to what was really being said. In Hawai'i, there are also many small communities where most of the people are kin to the others or have long-term friendships so he was able to understand that need for connection. An attorney by profession, Geri also served as a Family Court Judge for over 15 years. Upon retirement, Geri began to refocus his attention on more artistic adventures and learned to play the Steel Guitar. As a Hawai'ian Steel Guitarist, Geri has had many opportunities to play with musicians in Memphis, TN as well as all over Hawai'i. Most listeners will not know that the steel guitar and the concept of playing a slide guitar actually originated in Hawai'i in the 1800's before it crossed over to America and later, the world. Geri also spends much of his time as a DJ on KMNO 91.7 FM, a non-profit radio station where he hosts a radio show every Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. called Hawai'ian Steel. The show features guests, musicians, Hawai'ian steel guitar music, and call-ins from listeners. Geri gives a fantastic interview and one listeners will enjoy. Give it a listen and then stream Geri's Tuesday night show from the following website. To enjoy the music of the islands, go to "manaoradio.com" every Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. for the KMNO 91.7 FM show, Hawai'ian Steel with host, Geri Vadriz. www.jc.media662-837-1023theshark1023@gmail.com Welcome to HEARD IT ON THE SHARK with your show host Melinda Marsalis and show sponsor, Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area. This week, we have a very special guest! I had the opportunity to sit down with the one and only Read Connolly. Read is a husband, dog dad, fashion icon, touring musician, and the best Steel Guitar and Banjo picker this side of town! Currently, Read plays for two of the biggest and best country artists out there in Charles Wesley Godwin and Zach Bryan. When Read is not touring with these powerhouses, he is residing in Pittsburgh, rooting for the Pirates and eating Mad Mex. This week, we talk about his introduction to music, playing in bands growing up, struggling with self confidence, his transition into Steel Guitar & Banjo, working for the NHL, and how his life changed when he met Charles Wesley Godwin and Zach Bryan. This episode is incredible. His story is so motivational that I was overwhelmed with emotion during our conversation. Sometimes, you just have to walk through that door when it opens and I can't say “thank you” to Read enough for taking some time between touring the country to sit down and tell us his story. I know you will enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks for listening. - Become a "friend" on Patreon and support the show

Episode 95 Early Intersections of Rock and Electronic Music Playlist Frank Zappa, The Mothers of Invention, “The Return of the Son Of Monster Magnet (Unfinished Ballet In Two Tableaus)” from Freak Out! (1966 Verve). Bass, Guitarrón, Soprano Vocals, Roy Estrada; Drums, Jimmy Carl Black; Guitar, Vocals, Arranged By, Written-By, Leader, Musical Director, Frank Zappa; Lead Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Elliot Ingber; Vocals, Harmonica, Tambourine, Finger Cymbals, Ray Collins. Having been gifted a copy of the Mother's album Freak Out! In 1966, it was apparently this song that stuck in Paul McCartney's mind, inspiring the “Carnival of Light” recording to follow. 12:15 The Beatles, “Carnival of Light” an unreleased track that was commissioned by the Million Volt Light and Sound Rave, an event held at the Roundhouse in London on January 28 and February 4, 1967. Recorded during a session for the song "Penny Lane" in January 1967. Working with the recording studio as a creative tool, this was a project brought to band by Paul McCartney who had been asked by the festival sponsors to create a tape to be featured at the event. It was reported later that McCartney explained the exercise to his bandmates by saying, "This is a bit indulgent, but would you mind giving me 10 minutes? I've been asked to do this thing. All I want you to do is just wander round all of the stuff and bang it, shout, play it." The result was this sound piece. The Beatles were already conditioned for turning out spectacular sound effects in the studio. This was before the Moog Synthesizer came to Abbey Road. Nonetheless, they had access to all manner of guitar effects, echo, reverb, a Mellotron, electronic piano, organ, Lesley speakers and other devices with which to improvise. 13:08 The Riders Of The Mark, “The Electronic Insides And Metal Complexion That Make Up Herr Doktor Krieg” from The Electronic Insides And Metal Complexion That Make Up Herr Doktor Krieg/Gotta Find Somebody (1967 20th Century Fox). I wish I knew more about this band, but I don't. They had this one single. It has sometimes been included on compilation of psychedelia. Rock music, tape reversal, tape echo, fuzz tones, guitars. 2:13 Pink Floyd, “Interstellar Overdrive” from The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967 Columbia). UK release of the formidable Pink Floyd, then making an impact with their first LP. No synthesizers, but there were electronic rock instruments galore and some imaginative stereo imaging, a benefit of working with tape in those days. Bass Guitar, Vocals, Roger Waters; Lead Guitar, Vocals, Syd Barrett; Drums, Nicky Mason; Piano, Organ, Rick Wright. 9:40 Bernard Parmegiani, “Pop'eclectic (1968)” from JazzEx (1999 Plat Lunch). Composed, produced, edited by Bernard Parmegiani. Parmegiani was one of the lesser-known composers associated with the French musique concrete school, although he was no less prolific in many genres, including electronic music for commercials. He was adept at experimenting across genres, providing musique concrete vividness to works for jazz and rock music. I always find his work to be refreshing and uncluttered by musical cliches. 11:03 (Frank Zappa) The Mothers of Invention, “Are You Hung Up?” from We're Only In It For The Money (1968 Verve). Arranged By, Composed By, Conductor, Concept By Conceived, Directed By Executed, Producer, Frank Zappa; Bass, Vocals, Other Asthma, Roy Estrada; Drums, Trumpet, Vocals, Other Indian Of The Group, Jimmy Carl Black; Drums, Vocals, Other Yak & Black Lace Underwear, Billy Mundi; Guitar, Piano, Vocals, Edited By, Other Weirdness, Frank Zappa; Piano, Woodwind, Other Wholesome, Ian Underwood; Saxophone, Other Weirdness & Teen Appeal, Euclid James Motorhead Sherwood; Sounds Snorks, Dick Barber; Voice Creepy Whispering, Engineer, Gary Kellgren; Voice Telephone, Suzy Creamcheese; Woodwind, “Mumbled Weirdness,” Bunk Gardner. 1:30 Silver Apples, “Velvet Cave” from Silver Apples (1968 Kapp). Composed and Arranged by, Dan Taylor, Simeon; Percussion, Dan Taylor; The Simeon (oscillators, filters), Simeon; Vocals, Dan Taylor, Simeon. “INSTRUCTIONS: Play Twice Before Listening.” This two-man group used a genius combination of drums and oscillators, a match made in heaven. 3:27 (Frank Zappa) The Mothers of Invention, “Nasal Retentive Calliope Music” from We're Only In It For The Money (1968 Verve). Arranged By, Composed By, Conductor, Concept By Conceived, Directed By Executed, Producer, Frank Zappa; Bass, Vocals, Other Asthma, Roy Estrada; Drums, Trumpet, Vocals, Other Indian Of The Group, Jimmy Carl Black; Drums, Vocals, Other Yak & Black Lace Underwear, Billy Mundi; Guitar, Piano, Vocals, Edited By, Other Weirdness, Frank Zappa; Piano, Woodwind, Other Wholesome, Ian Underwood; Saxophone, Other Weirdness & Teen Appeal, Euclid James Motorhead Sherwood; Sounds Snorks, Dick Barber; Voice Creepy Whispering, Engineer, Gary Kellgren; Voice Telephone, Suzy Creamcheese; Woodwind, “Mumbled Weirdness,” Bunk Gardner. 2:03 The United States of America, “The American Metaphysical Circus” from The United States of America (1968 Columbia). While the entire psychedelic scene in America was adding tape manipulation, fuzz tones, and echo to their recordings, The United States of America brought a blend of rock musicianship and serious tape collage work to the fore. The tape effects in their music were not the usual brief hooks or the sake of novelty, but fully composed blocks of electronic and found sounds integrated in the core of their tunes. Electric Bass, Rand Forbes; Keyboards, Electronics, Organ, Piano, Arranged, Electric Harpsichord, Calliope, Joseph Byrd; Lead Vocals, Dorothy Moskowitz; Organ, Piano, Calliope, Ed Bogas; Percussion, Drums Electric Drums, Craig Woodson; Producer, David Rubinson; Violin Electric Violin, Ring Modulator, Gordon Marron. 5:07 The United States of America, “Hard Coming Love” from The United States of America (1968 Columbia). Electric Bass, Rand Forbes; Keyboards, Electronics, Organ, Piano, Arranged, Electric Harpsichord, Calliope, Joseph Byrd; Lead Vocals, Dorothy Moskowitz; Organ, Piano, Calliope, Ed Bogas; Percussion, Drums Electric Drums, Craig Woodson; Producer, David Rubinson; Violin Electric Violin, Ring Modulator, Gordon Marron. No synthesizers as such, but Tom Oberheim built ring modulators and other devices for them. 4:48 Bernard Parmegiani, “Du Pop À L'âne (1969)” from JazzEx (1999 Plat Lunch). Composed, produced, edited by Bernard Parmegiani. Of special interest on this track is a sampled chunk of a song by the Doors that appears about 6 minutes in, altered and accompanied by editing and effects. This use of sampling speaks to the liberties that musique concrete musicians were taking with found materials. 10:14 Pierre Henry & Michel Colombier, “Prologue,” “Psyché Rock,” “Jéricho Jerk,” and “Teen Tonic” from Mass For Today / The Green Queen (1969 Limelight). Compilation of earlier works first released in 1967. These four works were part of “Mass for Today,” an electronic rock ballet.” This is a decent collection, with selections from other Henry musique concrete works. The electronic sounds and tape effects seem somewhat heavy-handed now, but at that time, this was what one could do without a synthesizer. Henry was already a maestro of musique concrete by that time so it's especially interesting to see what sounds he added without seeming trite or cliched. Réalisation Sonore, Pierre Henry; Written by, Michel Colombier, Pierre Henry. 9:54 Spooky Tooth and Pierre Henry, “Have Mercy” from Ceremony: An Electronic Mass (1969 Island). Bass Guitar, Andy Leigh; Composed by Gary Wright, Pierre Henry; Drums, Mike Kellie; Electronics, Realisation Sonore, Pierre Henry; Lead Guitar, Luther Grosvenor; Lead Vocals, Mike Harrison; Lead Vocals, Keyboards, Gary Wright. 8:10 The Free Pop Electronic Concept, “Pish! Pshaw!” from A New Exciting Experience (1969 Palette). From Brussels. Bass, James; Composed By, Recorded by Arsène Souffriau; Drums, Stu Martin; Electric Guitar, Jess; Organ, Scott Bradford; Percussion, Tumba, Vinagre. 4:47 The Free Pop Electronic Concept, “Cosmos Rhythms” from A New Exciting Experience (1969 Palette). From Brussels. Bass, James; Composed By, Recorded by Arsène Souffriau; Drums, Stu Martin; Electric Guitar, Jess; Organ, Scott Bradford; Percussion, Tumba, Vinagre. 3:01 Tommy James and the Shondells, “Cellophane Symphony” from Cellophane Symphony (1969 Roulette). This title track was a rare instrumental from this group normally associated with rock vocal hits. This is the only track in this podcast featuring the Moog Modular Synthesizer. There were certainly other examples of the Moog since it was first used in 1967, but I wanted to choose an example of how the synthesizer could be used by a rock band, rather than a pop artist such as Jean Jacques Perrey or Mort Garson. This is a terrific example that I would bet many of my listeners have never heard before. Tommy James, lead vocals, guitars, keyboards; Eddie Gray, lead guitar, backing vocals; Ronnie Rosman – keyboards, backing vocals; Mike Vale, bass guitar, backing vocals; Pete Lucia, drums, percussion, backing vocals. 9:37 West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, “As Kind as Summer” from Vol. 3 - A Child's Guide To Good & Evil (1968 Reprise). American psychedelic rock band, formed in Los Angeles in 1965, broke up in 1969. Three teens (brothers Dan and Shaun Harris and their friend Michael Lloyd) teamed up with 30-year old Bob Markley, who got them a record deal with Reprise. Each of their albums was most bizarre, combining hummable pop tunes and spacey production. I included this particular track because it starkly demonstrates the use of tape loops and sound reversal. 1:10 Toshi Ichiyanagi, The Flowers, "Electric Chant” and “The Flowers (内田裕也とザ・フラワーズ)” from Opera "From The Works Of Tadanori Yokoo (1969 The End Record). Composed by Toshi Ichiyanagi and performed by the Japanese rock group The Flowers: Bass, Takeshi Hashimoto; Drums, Joji Wada; Guitar, Vocals, Remi Aso; Percussion, Backing Vocals, Yuya Uchida; Steel Guitar, Katsuhiko Kobayashi; Vocals, Hiroshi Chiba, Kento Nakamura. I'm including two pieces from this opera from 1969. The first, “Electric Chant” is electronic and includes tape collage while the second, “The Flowers” was performed by the Japanese pop rock band The Flowers and is loaded with distortion, echo, feedback, and reverberation, transforming the simple rock format into a discourse in electronic sound. 5:17 & 7:18 Tim Buckley, “Starsailor” from Starsailor (1970 Bizarre). Engineer, Stan Agol; Vocals, Producer, Written by, Tim Buckley. According to Larry Beckett, Buckley's chief lyricist and collaborator, who was there when they recorded this track, Buckley had a basic lyric track to which he recorded 18 additional vocals tracks on top of it. “He didn't write it out as a classical musician does, but it was thoroughly composed.” From the standpoint of rock music, this was more akin to composing with tone clusters than chord progressions. 4:34 Opening background music: Luc Ferrari, “Dialogue Ordinaire Avec La Machine (1984)” from Dialogue Ordinaire Avec La Machine / Sexolidad (2019 Elica). Composed and performed by Luc Ferrari. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.

The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ollie Strong's career began in the 1950's playing Steel Guitar in the era prior to the instrument having Pedals. He was among the first small handful of pickers in Canada to begin playing Pedal Steel Guitar. Noted as an early member of the house band on CBC TV's Tommy Hunter Show, over the course of his long career Ollie backed up legends such as Ray Price, Jean Shepard and, Jim Reeves. His playing is featured on albums by Canadian heroes Gordon Lightfoot, Murray McLauchlan and, Dick Damron along with countless other "lost" Canadian Country sessions on the Arc and Marathon/Paragon labels by singers like Chef Adams, Brent Williams, Al Hooper and, Bill Long. He's even credited as the Steel Guitarist on Funkadelic's 1972 album, America Eats Its Young, and I sure wish I'd known that ahead of our conversation.
SEASON 2 EPISODE 1 - THE DAN & DAVE COUNTRY DUO GROUP FROM AUSTIN TEXAS IN THE 1970S AND 1980s An entertaining evening with Dave Henry on the Sidney St. James Show! First, let me tell all the folks out there that it appears almost impossible to talk with people who have ever heard of Dan & Dave (Part I), although they played in front of thousands of people at the Backroom in Austin, Texas, during the late 70s and early 80s. For many years, his partner in crime was no other than Dan Burke, who left us last April 2021. Except for playing at the Aqua Festival once a year, their venue was the Backroom every Friday and many Saturday nights. Dan and Dave (Part II) both were like me when I worked for KOOL99 Radio on the weekend all around Central Texas with the KOOL99 Oldies Road Show. Work 8-5 downtown Monday thru Friday and do gigs all weekend and on Sunday nights, having my own show, Fifties Fun on Sunday Nights. Dan & Dave had a faithful accompanist by the name of Doctor Hans Langshon, who had to drive all the way down from Temple, Texas, where he was a physician at Scott and White Hospital. He played Bass guitar. And then there was Arty Passes, who played the steel guitar. He was with Channel 36 News during the week and on stage on Friday nights with Dan & Dave. About 6 years ago, a steel guitar player named Colm Chomicky from all the way up in Kansas was looking to find Arty and asked if anyone recalled a young steel guitar player who played with Dan & Dave in 1980. Wow, believe it or not, he got his answer when no other than ARTY replied, “Colm… you just made my day. Yes, a young steel player was with Dan & Dave at the Backroom. I'm now an old steel player with Kevin Fowler. That was the most fun I ever had at a gig. I still remember one of their bouncers by the name of Tiny. Yep, on Friday nites was always the Dan & Dave night, and it was always a full house.” Another fellow by the name of Larry Coombs was also young back then and used to walk down to see Dan & Dave every Friday night in 1980. He said, “I've got an album by them, a live one. Last we heard, he has moved up the road to Lockhart, Texas." Larry Coombs continued. Now back to just who Dan & Dave were in the Music Capital of Texas. They were best described by a Steel Guitar player from Prairie Village, Kansas. “For those who do not know about Dan & Dave, they have been described as a country “Smothers Brothers.” They played and sang their music between corny jokes about Furr's Cafeteria. I remember once there was a ceiling fan up on the ceiling behind them on stage, and after each Lone Star longneck, they would flip the empty back over their shoulders, often hitting the rotating ceiling fan.” VISIT THE SIDNEY ST. Good people! I'm so pleased to share my fourth guest to embark on this “Sitting In” mini-series, a local legend in my neck of the woods, Chattanooga's own Lon Eldridge. Harboring a unique blend of traditional pre-war blues, ragtime, jazz and swing, Lon has spent the last two decades evoking the styles of those who laid the framework of these genres, from the likes of Mississippi John Hurt to Robert Johnson to Blind Blake and countless other musical masters. He's an avid collector of 78rpm records and restores old Victrola record players, and showcases his deep collection under the guise of DJ Passe. Lon's also a member of a gypsy jazz and swing group called The 9th Street Stompers, who cull up the musical scenery of an era when the lines between swing, gypsy jazz, blues, rockabilly, and if all that wasn't enough, he also has his own bolo tie business, Lookout Bolo Ties. For this collaboration, Lon expanded his skills once again to celebrate the work of Hawaiian steel guitarist Pale K. Lua, who was instrumental in bringing the unique sound to America at the turn of the century, before it was adopted by blues, western, bluegrass and country music starting in the 1920's. Lon is the only person to assemble all of Pale's recordings and release them as a complete set. Here's his story, enjoy. Follow Lon: @dj_Passe @bolo_knee Links: Pale K. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
Let’s talk a little bit about one of the most important instruments giving country music it’s signature sound: the pedal steel guitar. It’s a contraption with so many moving parts, whatcha-ma -call-its, and strings that even a fairly decent guitar player like myself can look at it with total wonderment and intimidation. Very few folks actually play this instrument and even fewer can be called experts. But on today’s show, we have one of the experts. Steve Palousek is a very accomplished steel guitar player who spent a lot of his career on the road with artists like Ray Price, Gene Watson, Gary Stewart and more. After leaving the road as a steel player he opened his own recording studio, now located in the little town of Holland, TX and has worked with many familiar names in Red Dirt and Texas Country including, Cross Canadian Ragweed, LeeAnn Womack, Mike McClure and others, including yours truly. To contact Steve about recording at his studio or having him add some steel to your tracks, email him at: spalousek@yahoo.com So here we go with episode #106 of the Troubadour with this week’s guest, steel guitar hero and recording studio owner, Steve Palousek. The duo Phillip Wilkerson & Jourdan Laik known as Time Being, are in top form as they venture into over 70 minutes of deep-drifting, time-melting, soul-stirring bliss that hovers delicately at the fringes of darkness and light. Three-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and guitarist Ben Harper has a soft spot for Aotearoa and the feeling is mutual. Since his 1994 debut Harper has pushed musical boundaries, mixing folk, blues, hard rock, country, jazz and reggae, but his lap steel guitar has been ever present. Now he's put his Monteleone guitar front and centre, with the release of a solo instrumental album Winter Is For Lovers.
Dling diiii dang twang, I see Scott over there with his shaggy hair. He holds a guitar flat on his lap and slides a metal bar across the strings over there. Yes, I'm caught in a trap, there's no way out, because I love live music sounds too much baby. Pardon me, I got lost in the memories of yet another glorious episode. This one pulses and rhymes and finds its way straight to the part of my being that makes me wanna move and sing. Warren and Scott are lost but found together in the shed on a late Summer's evening. They chat about Scott's treasured Golden Spangled Cigarettes tin from Gallaher Ltd in Belfast and of course the music making bits and bobs housed inside of it. Sounds are made and their cosmic connection is sealed by the music inside and all around us. Thank you for listening. See the gear here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CFMQG5gn4hS/?igshid=jhvvb43ue24w
On this week's show host Kyle Long pays tribute to steel guitar masters of Indiana. During the mid-20th Century Indiana produced several important steel guitarists who made significant contributions to the instrument's development. Kyle plays music from Herb Remington, Bud Isaacs, Johnny Sibert, "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow, Buddy Emmons, and The Harlin Brothers, who are credited with inventing the pedal steel guitar in Indianapolis during the 1930s.

Michael Slotboom is doing things on his terms. He was on track to run the machine shop at the University of Texas, but he discovered he really wanted to make custom guitar parts. So he talked to his wife and they invested their savings into starting a specialized shop. Fifteen years later, his parts are sought the world over, and you can see them on stage when you see many of your favorite artists.
Rated by Lenny Henry as one of the UK's top bluesmen, Steve has been laying down greasy guitar blues and elegant cerebral Jazz sax in equal quantities, for generations. Oh, and he builds guitars, beautifully... and he's completely self-taught. And he's got the deepest voice in all Birmingham. His Blues trio can be found playing live in all the best joints in the Midlands and beyond. They are astonishingly relaxed and extremely tight - something that comes from decades of playing together. On top of this, Steve Ajao's facebook feed carries all sorts of other titbits, such as recipes for homemade Sauerkraut, gardening tips, and more. He's into loads of stuff :-) Gourmet, gardener, guitar restorer, blues shouter, cool saxman. I'm sure there's more. On top of this, you'll hear Steve play an improvisation on Steel Guitar in the podcast itself, as part of the interview. Links Steve Ajao's Blues Giants website Steve Ajao's Blues Giants on Facebook Steve's Club Bebop on Facebook: currently a weekly Wednesday residency at Fletchers Bar in Kings Heath, Birmingham. And there's a ton of stuff to check out on YouTube, both Jazz and Blues. Lives in Music The Lives in Music series celebrates people who have spent a lifetime in music. They may be famous; they may be people who have spent their lives working in the background for the love of it. They all have stories. Lives in Music is a Radio To Go production The theme music for this series comes from Big Q Fish, a seriously uncompromising Birmingham band that I suggest you check out. The song is 'Boksburg Jive Toon', written by guitarist Brian Neil. There's plenty more to listen to if you follow the link. They're also on YouTube. Don't forget to subscribe!
English doesn’t have a word for this kind of longing feeling, this melancholic yearning, this feeling of being away from your home and not knowing if you’ll ever get back there. So we have steel guitars.

November 21, 2017 Welcome back to World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan, home of OMN’s Coffeeshop Conversations. Today we’ve got Paul Brainard, a very recent inductee into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. If there is a more versatile musician around here I haven’t met him. This weekend (November 25-27) he’s hearding the horn section of the band at the annual Next Waltz show at the Alberta Rose Theatre.. You may know him better as that steel guitarist who plays everything from Ernest Tubb to Led Zeppelin to Thelonious Monk on this instrument. He’s a native Portlander and has an awful lot to say about his music and his instruments. How did he react to his Oregon Music Hall of Fame honor? How did he get from being a horn player to fame as a steel guitarist?
Our show is recorded live at Third City Sound in Downtown Joliet on the third floor above Chicago Street Pub. We are doing our best to introduce you to as much local music as possible. We have also been inspired by area artists that have been emerging. So many people have been coming together to find away to do things better, and to respect those who might be trying a different method than our own. we do this in hopes to reach a higher quality of life for humans as a whole. We do this one step at a time. In this episode we get to some serious sarcastic banter in addition to Patrick Lyons' smooth songwriting and execusion. We get to hear about his time in Austin up through what to watch for in the near future. This episode had us joking around more than usual, and we think you'll appreciate that...... Welcome to the 32nd instalment of the Love that Album Compilation Edition... it's October. Rather than talk about some horror punk or dusty Alt country, this time around Eric discusses the Steel Guitar Jazzy great American Song book filled albums of Jon Rauhouse and his collection of collaborators. Over the course of three albums Rauhouse (Jon Rauhouse's Steel Guitar Air Show, Jon Rauhouse's Steel Guitar Rodeo , Steel Guitar Heart Attack) has delivered a great collection of tunes of mainly covers featuring his guitar work and a host of guest singers including; Kelly Hogan, Neko Case, and Sally Timms. All three records were issued on Bloodshot Records... which leads to our last album... Jon Langford And The Pine Valley Cosmonauts – The Executioner's Last Songs Volume 1... (Full title/aka): "The Executioner's Last Songs The Pine Valley Cosmonauts consign songs of Murder, Mob-Law& Cruel, Cruel Punishment to the realm of Myth, Memory & History to benefit The Illinois Death Penalty Moratorium Project" in which more Bloodshot artists (and a few others) contribute murder ballads and other songs about the end… in a punky death laden alt country sound... okay I guess some of that slipped into this month's episode... anyway...
