According to a 2023 survey*, ONLY 40% of physicians currently recommend their profession. How can we boost that to 80% or 90%? In my interview with Dr. Antonio J. Webb, MD, a deeply passionate Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, I explored crucial advice for aspiring medical professionals. Here's what he shared: 1. **Insurance headaches are real.** Streamlining authorizations and improving reimbursements could be game-changers. 2. **Burnout is killing passion.** We need to address work-life balance ASAP. 3. **Administrative overload is suffocating care.** It's time to cut the red tape and let doctors be doctors. 4. **Private practices are struggling.** Supporting them means supporting physician independence and job satisfaction. Dr. Webb shared profound insights on the importance of passion, balance, and open-mindedness in choosing a medical specialty. He emphasized that finding something you love to do is essential for long-term fulfillment. His passion for spine and orthopedic surgery illustrates how a deep connection to your work can drive satisfaction and success. Dr. Webb also addressed the common misconception that surgeons cannot have a balanced lifestyle. By being in private practice, he can tailor his schedule to fit his personal needs, demonstrating that a healthy work-life balance is achievable even in demanding fields. Furthermore, Dr. Webb advised against letting a single negative experience during a rotation define one's perception of a specialty. He encouraged looking at the bigger picture and understanding that specific circumstances often shape individual experiences. Lastly, he highlighted the importance of keeping an open mind when exploring different specialties. Dr. Webb believes that the right choice will eventually resonate with each individual, underscoring the need for exploration and flexibility. Developing resilience can help us overcome almost any challenge. I had an unbelievably incredible discussion on Wellness at the Speed of Light with Dr. Antonio J. Webb, MD, a San Antonio-based orthopedic surgeon and military veteran. This was nothing short of a Masterclass on resiliency and the ability to fight through incredible struggles growing up in Shreveport, Louisiana, with many family members addicted to drugs and in prison. Dr. Webb then had an incredible career in the military, where he was subjected to over 100 mortar attacks while caring for patients. I could not be more excited about the release of this podcast, which will air at the end of the week. Here is a small sample from our discussion where Dr. Webb talks about the incredibly difficult environment he grew up in and how he was able to overcome those challenges. The bottom line? Happy doctors = better healthcare for all of us. I love being a physician, and it was incredible speaking with someone who is so passionate about the profession, but change is desperately needed to reignite the love of medicine for the many who have lost their fervor. *Survey was from Physicians Foundation based on responses from 2,114 physicians, residents, and medical students polled between June 8 and June 28, 2023. It reported that 60% were suffering burnout and 36% knew another physician who had contemplated suicide. What do you think? #HealthcareReform #PhysicianWellbeing #MedicalProfession #DrWebb #DrSinicropi

Growing up, Dan Possley did not dream of being a doctor or a renowned Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, he dreamed of riding in the Tour de France. He even moved to Belgium for three years to train. But the reality was he wasn’t going to be a Tour de France competitor, so he moved back to Chicago to attend grad school but there was one problem, his grades. After convincing the school to give him a shot, he held good on his promise and completed his degree at the top of his class and quickly found work with a cardiologist. But this is where Dr. Dan’s story takes a turn that would forever change his life. Following the 9/11 attacks, he felt a calling to serve and joined the United States Army as an Orthopedic Surgeon. Soon after, he was deployed to the Helmand Province in Afghanistan where his skills were put to the test saving the lives of U.S. soldiers injured in combat. Today, Dr Dan Possley is a renowned Orthopedic Spine Surgeon practicing with Cornerstone Orthopedics in the Denver, Colorado area. He is ranked as one of the top Orthopedic Spine Surgeons in the state and brings a different perspective to medicine, a blue-collar background who can relate to his patients. #Veterans #USArmy #GoArmy #Surgeons #8Seconds #ExperientialKnowledge www.truthtalks.com

Dr. Alex Vaccaro is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spine surgery including traumatic spinal injuries. He is the Chair of Orthopedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and the President of Rothman Orthopedics, one of the leading orthopedic institutions in the United States. We talk about the importance of hope. "So when his mom says to me, will my son walk again, I say, you know something, I don't know the answer to that, but I hope so because time will tell . . . I have patients come in who are paralyzed, but we've intervened early and I've seen miracles, I call it miracles because I've sent patients paralyzed that have walked out of rehab."You know, you operate on someone, they become a family member. If you have a complication with a patient, they move into your house. I mean you, you have to make sure they're doing great."Dr. Vaccaro describes the measures Rothman is undertaking as the COVID-19 lockdowns are scaled back, and elective orthopedic and spine surgeries resume. "If you walk through the door, it's like a gauntlet. 'Hi, let me take your forehead temperature. Hi, let me take your pulse oximetry.' We test all the patients we operate on 48 hours before. So every patient gets tested. Potentially people are less likely to come out with a nosocomial illness now than six months ago with this much generalized precautions in place."Automated Transcript

Dr. Rey Bosita, Orthopedic Spine Surgeon at Texas Back Institute talks about herniated discs, and the symptoms that you need to watch for. What is a herniated disc? Between each bony vertebral body is a disc that acts as a shock absorber and a hinge. As we age, the disc becomes dehydrated, making it less supportive and more prone to injury. Even a healthy, well-hydrated disc can be injured. The disc is composed of the annulus, which is a tough tissue that makes up the outside of the disc. The nucleus pulposus is the jelly-like substance contained in the center of the disc. A herniated disc occurs when the nucleus breaks through the outer tissue. A herniated disc is very common and may or may not cause symptoms. Stretching or tearing of the annulus may result in back or neck pain. The discs are immediately in front of the spinal cord and exiting nerves, so when the herniated disc or protrusion compresses the spinal cord or nerves, leg or arm pain and numbness or weakness may occur.
