Dr Hanscom is an orthopaedic complex spinal deformity surgeon who was based in Seattle, WA for over 32 years. He decided to give up his surgical practice in 2019 to focus solely on teaching patients and chronic back pain sufferers how to heal themselves from chronic mental and physical pain without surgery. “The one thing that pulled me out of my hole was expressive writing. Nothing really happens or changes without expressive writing.” - David Hanscom In 1990, Dr. David Hanscom, a renowned orthopedic surgeon, had his life turned upside down. He began experiencing chronic pain that made him develop 17 symptoms – including OCD, depression, migraine headaches, and many more issues. He shares that his “whole body was lit up” and nobody could help him figure out what was going on. In today's episode, he explains why 90% of symptoms in your body's physiology (how your body functions and runs), and only 10% of issues are structural. While churches (along with wider society) are still being urged to exercise caution with regards to indoor interaction, the emphasis is now switching from laws and guidance to personal responsibility. That said, there are still mitigations churches need to consider in holding worship services and events at church. The studies concluded that chronic pain is the number one disability in America. The public's perception of chronic pain is that it's unsolvable and the best one can expect is to live well with it. The reality is that modern neuroscience research has revealed answers and it is a solvable problem. Most of this data hasn't penetrated into the thinking of mainstream medicine. This seems like a no-brainer, yet David and Jeff indicate that it might not be as simple as it sounds. Whether we realize it or not, we often bring emotional baggage home from work, which can directly impact our relationships with loved ones.David explains that our families and loved ones are our greatest source of support and ALSO our biggest triggers that feed pain, anxiety and stress. When we create a safe haven in the home, we can foster more of the love and support versus those triggers that promote negative feelings.A safe haven in the home leads to healthier lives and more enjoyable medical practices. To do this, David suggests several steps to start creating a safe haven: Step 1: Leave negativity and anger outside of the house. It's important to note that stress and anxiety are part of the unconscious brain which is a million times stronger than the conscious brain. This means that we can't use rational means to mitigate stress and anxiety. Instead, we need to redirect by creating an awareness and some space. This is where writing - the mechanism of writing, not the content itself - comes in, because it offers a degree of separation. How does he suggest we apply the technique of expressive writing? By doing the following:Step 1 - Put your pen to the paper and write with freedom: any random thoughts and emotions as they come to you.Step 2 - Do not spend time analyzing your thoughts. It's just about separation. Step 3 - After writing, destroy it and do not hold into the writing.Most importantly, find a few minutes a week to find time for expressive writing even if it's only 30seconds a day and start this week!
