The "No Bending" Rule For Herniated Discs?

Back In Shape

Many individuals with severe lumbar conditions—such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or those recovering from a microdiscectomy—are handed the impossible "No Bending, Lifting, or Twisting" (BLT) rule. While meant to be protective, this generic advice leaves you without a practical strategy for the real world. How are you supposed to put on your socks, lift a heavy coat, or simply navigate the day without moving? Treating patients as though they are fragile and suggesting total avoidance only breeds kinesiophobia (the fear of movement). This ultimately weakens the body, restricts your independence, and leaves your spine far more vulnerable to the unpredictable, everyday strains of life. True rehabilitation is about empowerment through controlled, aggravation-free movement, not permanent rest. The reality is that your 15 minutes of structured rehab exercise is objectively the safest part of your day. Core movements like the dead bug, squat, and hip hinge in our programme are not "back exercises" that aimlessly bend the spine; they are spine protection movements. They teach you how to lock your lumbar spine in a stable, neutral position while moving your limbs safely around it. By scaling these movements down to your current capability and practising them in a highly controlled environment, you build the muscular armour and subconscious bracing habits required to protect your back permanently.Key Topics Covered

In this live session, we tackle the biggest hurdles preventing your recovery from a herniated disc and sciatica. Far too many people get caught in the "relief trap," obsessing over immediate pain relief and trying to stretch or "unpinch" irritated nerves. Unfortunately, focusing solely on soothing symptoms often leads to actions that irritate the underlying structural injury. We explain why the actual source of your sciatic pain is a load-bearing injury in your lumbar spine, and why true healing takes months of dedicated rehabilitation, not quick fixes. We also dive into the second major distraction: posture. From worrying about pelvic tilts to trying to force a perfectly straight spine while dealing with an antalgic lean, chasing posture is a losing battle. Human asymmetry is entirely normal, and trying to correct it while in debilitating pain will only tie you in unnecessary knots. Instead of trying to artificially stabilise your pelvis or correct an unchangeable curve, your focus must be on protecting the injury and gradually rebuilding the resilience of your spine. By sticking to a structured programme of foundational movements like squats and hip hinges, you can build real strength and finally move past the endless cycle of flare-ups.Key Topics Covered

This special Tick Boot Camp Podcast crossover features the full International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) webinar recording, “At the Frontlines of Chronic Illness: Conversations with ILADS Experts.” In this dynamic panel discussion, leading clinicians and specialists unpack why Lyme disease and other infection-associated chronic illnesses are so misunderstood, why testing fails so many patients, and what it really takes to heal—brain, immune system, mitochondria, and terrain included. Moderated by Rich Johannesen (Tick Boot Camp), the panel delivers practical insights and hopeful, patient-centered guidance for anyone navigating complex chronic illness—whether you're a patient, caregiver, clinician, or advocate. Featured Panelists Chris Winfrey, MD — Psychiatrist; Medical Director, New Image Wellness Nicole Bell — “The Lyme Disease Engineer”; CEO, Galaxy Diagnostics Tania Dempsey, MD — Medical Director, AIM Center for Personalized Medicine Melanie Stein, ND — Naturopathic Doctor; Author focused on cellular wellness and healing terrain Host/Moderator: Rich Johannesen (Tick Boot Camp) ILADS Intro: Ali Moresco (ILADS) Episode Highlights ILADS Mission and Why This Webinar Matters The webinar opens with ILADS' mission: improving diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease and associated illnesses through research, education, and policy. ILADS emphasizes physician training and patient-centered care, while also supporting the educational mission of ILADEF. Rich frames the night as a rare opportunity to hear from experts working at the front lines of complex chronic illness—especially for patients who've been dismissed, misdiagnosed, or told their symptoms “don't make sense.” Segment 1: Brain Health, Neuroimmune Illness, and Why Lyme “Feels Like Dementia” Chris Winfrey, MD Dr. Winfrey introduces a core theme: Lyme is not only an infection—it often behaves like a neuroimmune illness. Key takeaways: The brain is a high-energy, high-immune-demand organ, uniquely vulnerable to infection-driven inflammation and toxicity. Lyme can disrupt brain function through: Blood flow issues Synaptic dysfunction Myelin damage Network-level disruption, not just “neurotransmitters” He describes brain function through networks that Lyme can destabilize: Default Mode Network (internal reflection) Salience Network (switching between networks) Central Executive Network (planning/organization) Action Network (execution) Autonomic Network (regulation) Limbic Network (threat/fear response) The result: patients often describe “brain shutdown,” confusion, cognitive impairment, and even dementia-like symptoms. A major reframing: Emotions are not “non-physical.” They are measurable physiological states. Lyme-driven nervous system injury can create emotional disturbance because the biology is disturbed. Segment 2: Poly-microbial Infection, Fight-or-Flight, and the Belief-Healing Loop Winfrey + Rich Discussion Rich frames humans as spiritual, emotional, and physical beings, and asks how chronic infection impacts both body and emotional resilience. Key points: Lyme can cross the blood-brain barrier and affect virtually any organ system. The nervous system becomes a “central battleground,” and measurement is hard because nervous system dysfunction isn't captured well by simple bloodwork. Rich and Dr. Winfrey explore how illness disrupts perception, decision-making, and our ability to interpret the world—especially when gut function and intuition feel “offline.” The healing paradox: Chronic stress and “fighting your way to healing” can backfire. Dr. Winfrey emphasizes that healing requires a parasympathetic state—rest, digest, repair—and that this often involves acceptance, surrender, trust, and safety. Segment 3: The State of Testing—Why So Many Patients Test Negative Nicole Bell (Galaxy Diagnostics) Nicole shares her personal motivation and professional mission: testing determines treatment, reimbursement, and belief—and too many patients are failed by existing tools. Indirect testing (antibody testing): The standard approach relies on antibodies—meaning it depends on the immune system behaving predictably. But Lyme and other stealth pathogens evade and suppress immune responses. Even in controlled research models, two infected subjects can show completely different antibody patterns. Immunosuppression (illness severity, medications like steroids, immune dysregulation) can reduce antibody reliability. Direct testing (pathogen detection):Nicole contrasts Lyme testing with illnesses like COVID—where you use tests that look for the pathogen itself (PCR/antigen), not just antibodies. Why direct detection is hard in Lyme: Pathogens can be low abundance They can be tissue-sequestered Sampling matters Why urine can matter for Lyme: Lyme may not stay in blood, but it can shed proteins/antigens that filter into urine. Galaxy's approach includes methods to capture, concentrate, and detect those markers. New diagnostics focus: Genus-level screening for the “3Bs” (Borrelia, Bartonella, Babesia) Reducing guessing when symptoms overlap and co-infections “masquerade” as each other Segment 4: Immune Dysfunction, Mast Cells, and Why Antibody Testing Can Go Haywire Tania Dempsey, MD (AIM Center for Personalized Medicine) Dr. Dempsey explains the immune system through two major branches: Innate immune system (fast, primitive defense) Adaptive immune system (antibodies, longer-term response) Mast cells as first responders: Mast cells detect “danger” and release inflammatory mediators (histamine and many others). In chronic infection, mast cells can remain persistently activated, releasing hundreds of inflammatory compounds. Why antibody tests fail (two patterns): Immune suppression → insufficient antibody production → false negatives Immune chaos → excessive, inappropriate antibody production → confusing positives - Positive Lyme bands “everywhere” - Positive autoantibodies without classic autoimmune disease patterns - “Everything looks positive” because signaling is dysfunctional Her central philosophy:It's not only about killing the bug. It's about fixing immune regulation so the body can actually clear or control infection. She also names the broader context: modern toxic load (mold, plastics, pesticides, “forever chemicals”) primes the immune system into dysregulation before infections even arrive. Segment 5: Advanced Immune-Modulating Tools Therapeutic Plasma Exchange + SOT Dr. Dempsey discusses therapies she's excited about, especially for complex, stuck cases: Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE / plasmapheresis): Removes plasma (where antibodies, inflammatory mediators, and “garbage” accumulate) Replaces with albumin (and sometimes IVIG) Concept: reduce inflammatory burden + toxic load to reset the terrain SOT (Supportive Oligonucleotide Technique): Molecular targeted approach designed to reduce replication of specific pathogens More targeted than “wide-net” antimicrobial approaches Used strategically after lowering inflammatory/toxic burden She emphasizes: not for everyone, not a universal cure—but promising enough to merit formal publication. Segment 6: GLP-1 Agonists and Mast Cell Stabilization “Brain-melt” moment, revisited Dr. Dempsey explains why drugs commonly known for diabetes/weight loss may have immune benefits: Mast cells have receptors for GLP and GIP hormones Patients showed improvements beyond weight: cognitive function, inflammation, immune stability She describes: Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) Tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound) Emerging triple agonists (GLP-1/GIP/glucagon pathways) Her clinical approach has moved these agents earlier in care plans for immune stabilization in select cases. Segment 7: Cellular Healing, Mitochondria, and the Terrain Melanie Stein, ND Dr. Stein brings it home: healing often stalls when we focus only on killing pathogens, but don't repair the cellular damage. Core concepts: Lyme damages cell membranes, disrupting what goes in/out and how cells communicate. It contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction, reducing ATP (energy currency). If cells stay in “alarm mode,” healing remains blocked. Cell membrane therapy and terrain support: IV and oral lipid support (phospholipids, phosphatidylcholine, omega fatty acids) Personalized support based on lipidomic patterns Supportive therapies to reduce oxidative stress and “toxic fats” Focus on signaling safety to the body—so repair can resume Cell Danger Response:A key theme: even after infections reduce, the body may remain stuck in a persistent defense state, requiring cellular and nervous system support to exit “danger mode.” Regulation Before Eradication Panel Reflection Round As the panel closes, several themes converge: Limbic system + autonomic nervous system regulation is foundational “Regulation becomes before eradication” Healing requires safety, predictability, and nervous system calm Chronic illness can block our ability to connect—especially in relationships—because survival physiology dominates Dr. Dempsey adds that limbic retraining / nervous system reset is often the first step she starts with in her practice. Question and Answer Highlights Lyme and Cancer? The panel notes emerging signals connecting tick-borne illness and certain cancers, but emphasizes that more research is needed to determine causality. Herniated discs, connective tissue, and chronic infection The discussion highlights potential links through: connective tissue disruption collagen damage mast cell mediators (enzymes that affect tissue integrity) infection-driven inflammation Cross-reactive antibody results (example: Brucella) The group explains how antibody testing can produce confusing results due to immune dysregulation and cross-reactivity—another reason why interpretation and test methodology matter. Nasal testing / sinus terrain While not a mainstream Lyme diagnostic route, the panel references nasal/sinus colonization (especially with mold-related or chronic inflammatory patterns) as a terrain factor that can influence recovery. Resources Mentioned Center for Lyme Action – State of Lyme Disease Research paper (Nicole Bell collaboration) ILADS Provider Search International Lyme and Associated Diseases Educational Foundation (ILADEF) Donations (supports education and clinician training) Final Message to Listeners This episode is a reminder that Lyme disease and infection-associated chronic illness are not one-dimensional problems. The path forward often requires: better diagnostics immune regulation nervous system support cellular repair personalized care and hope that the body can recover when the right puzzle pieces come together

Sciatic Nerve Flossing: Why It Makes Herniated Discs Worse

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2026 66:35

Sciatica and lower back pain can be incredibly frustrating, and if you have been dealing with a herniated disc, you have likely been told to try sciatic nerve flossing. The idea is that your sciatic nerve is physically trapped or stuck, and by pulling it back and forth through specific bodily movements, you can free it up. We break down the exact mechanics of this popular exercise, explaining how adopting a slumped posture and tensioning the nerve actually translates movement down the leg. However, while this might sound logical on the surface, the fundamental hypothesis is deeply flawed. Nerves do not tolerate stretching well, and treating the symptom completely ignores the root cause of the irritation. The reality for most individuals suffering from sciatica is not a physically pinned nerve—like hitting your funny bone—but rather severe inflammation and congestion resulting from a lumbar spine injury. A herniated disc creates a swollen environment in the tiny spaces of your lower back, irritating the nerve. While nerve flossing might offer temporary relief by momentarily opening up these congested spaces, it does nothing to build the structural integrity of your spine. In fact, constantly rounding the back and stretching the posterior ligaments can actually prolong the vulnerability of your spine and aggravate the underlying disc injury. We explain why a proactive programme focused on neutral spine stability and progressive resistance training is the true path to long-term resilience.Key Topics Covered

One day while snowboarding, Sachin made a move and his entire leg felt like it was on fire.Within days, he couldn't move, couldn't sit, couldn't function without intense burning sciatica. An MRI revealed two disc herniations (11mm L4-L5, 7mm L5-S1) and spine surgeons recommended surgery, including a laminectomy and microdiscectomy. At that point, surgery didn't sit well with him. He had real reservations and started questioning his path forward:What would life look like after his first surgery?Would it actually fix the problem, or just lead to more?Would he eventually need a fusion, knowing how often one surgery turns into another, and another?Sachin also had concerns about the long-term efficacy of surgery, knowing that many people can end up back in the same place and require additional procedures down the line.He had seen the success of many Whealth members who avoided surgery, so he wanted to try the Limitless program first. He told his spine surgeon that plan and they agreed it was a fair approach.Instead of rushing into surgery, he joined the Whealth Limitless Program. He didn't want to end up back in the same place. He knew he needed to rebuild his body mechanics and take a more holistic, long-term approach.Within the program, he learned how to actually move his body, which was empowering.Within 3 to 4 weeks, pain started improving.By 8 weeks, he was not only pain-free, he felt better than before the injury.Like many of our members, he didn't just heal. But when your pain is worst right after waking up, it's often one of the most common signs of a disc herniation or irritated spinal nerve. While you sleep, your spinal discs rehydrate and swell because gravity is removed from the spine overnight. That extra fluid increases pressure inside the disc, which can push further into an injured area and irritate nearby nerves, making your back feel much worse in the morning. In this episode, I'll show you a much smarter way to handle morning disc pain:

Why Your Herniated Disc Flares Up: The Truth About Spinal Stability

Back In Shape

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 16, 2026 72:48

In today's session, we dive deep into the mechanics of why lower back pain and sciatica flare up, even when you think you are doing the right things. The core of the issue is often "movement leakage," where motion intended for your hips or upper body inadvertently puts stress on an injured lumbar segment. Whether you are dealing with a herniated disc at L4/5 or L5/S1, these tissues have a reduced capacity for stress. When you move incorrectly—such as rounding your spine during a bent-over row or a simple daily task—you aggravate those vulnerable tissues. Understanding this is the first step toward moving away from the cycle of chronic pain and toward a structured rehabilitation programme. We also challenge the common misconception that more bending and stretching is the solution for a stiff back. If movement is what caused the aggravation, it is rarely logical to focus your recovery on more bending and twisting of the injured area. Instead, the priority must be to stabilise and protect the spine through isometric contraction and proper technique. By building a foundation of strength through exercises like squats and hip hinges, you teach your body to shield the injured segments, allowing the healing process to take place without constant re-injury.### Key Topics Covered

Why Back Pain Advice Conflicts: Understanding Segmental Injuries & Sciatica

Understanding why different clinicians give seemingly contradictory advice is one of the biggest hurdles in back pain recovery. When one practitioner focuses on a herniated disc and another identifies facet joint hypertrophy, they are often describing different parts of the same segmental injury. Because the spine functions as a series of integrated units, it is nearly impossible to strain a disc without also involving the facet joint capsules and surrounding ligaments. Shifting your perspective from "individual parts" to a "segmental injury" helps reduce the frustration of conflicting diagnoses and allows you to focus on the common solution: stabilising the affected area through high-quality movement and progressive loading.Recovery is a process of building skill and capacity, not just waiting for inflammation to subside. Many people struggle with recurrent flare-ups because they lack the baseline level of coordination required to protect their spine during daily activities, such as getting out of a chair or putting on socks. By mastering foundational patterns like the hip hinge and the squat, you learn to use your hips to spare your back. This mechanical shift, combined with structured relief strategies like towel decompression, creates the environment necessary for tissues—including the annulus fibrosus—to actually strengthen and heal over time, rather than being constantly set back by cumulative strain.### Key Topics Covered

Many individuals struggling with a herniated disc or chronic lower back pain find themselves frustrated when traditional exercises seem to provide little to no relief. Often, the issue isn't the act of exercising itself, but the lack of diligence and the incorrect application of spine stability principles. When exercises like the dead bug or squat are treated as an afterthought or a "sheet of paper" given by a practitioner, they lose their rehabilitative power. True recovery requires a shift from relief-based practices, such as stretching and bending, to a focus on maintaining a neutral spine. By prioritising spine stability, you ensure that the injured segment is protected from further irritation, allowing the body's natural healing processes to take place without constant interruption.Building long-term resilience is about more than just becoming pain-free; it is about objective functional improvement. While symptoms like sciatica may fluctuate based on inflammation levels—often peaking in the morning due to overnight fluid accumulation—your focus should remain on progressive loading. Moving through a structured programme from core engagement to weighted hip hinges and squats is what builds the "armour" necessary to protect your back during daily tasks. Whether you are dealing with a diagnosed herniated disc at L5/S1 or a synovial cyst, the goal of rehabilitation is to restore the integrity of the ligaments and muscles surrounding the spine. This creates a robust system capable of handling the demands of real life, far exceeding the minimal loading most people assume is "enough."read more: https://backinshapeprogram.com/2026/02/why-your-back-pain-exercises-arent-working-a-clinical-perspective/

The Roman Chair (or 45-degree back extension) is one of the most effective tools for strengthening the posterior chain, yet it is often performed incorrectly by those recovering from a herniated disc or sciatica. In this session, we break down the two most common errors: rounding the spine (flexion) and instability at the top of the movement. We explain why your goal during rehab is to cultivate "torso stiffness" rather than flexibility, ensuring the load remains on the glutes and hamstrings rather than shearing the lumbar spine. We also tackle a very common patient question: "Why does standing still (like washing dishes or queueing) hurt more than walking?" The answer lies in "cumulative loading." When you walk, your muscles act as a pump, flushing blood and offloading the spine cyclically. When you stand still, the compression is static and unrelenting. We discuss strategies to mitigate this, including using a "perch" stool and shifting your weight to manage fatigue. Finally, we address the safety of Hanging Leg Raises for back pain. While popular for abs, this exercise generates massive leverage on the lumbar spine and often causes the hip flexors to pull the back into hyperextension. For those in Phase 1 or 2 of the Back In Shape Programme, we recommend sticking to high-tension, stable floor-based core work (like the Dead Bug) before attempting high-leverage hanging movements.Key Topics Covered:

Dear Johnny, My dad, Tom, is a retired carpenter, but has since went back to work as a maintenance man to make ends meet. Due to the nature of his work as a carpenter, he has numerous health issues. He has had Hip replacement, Knee replacement, Herniated disk surgery, both rotator cuffs repaired, and more. My dad has been a hard worker his whole life. I used to watch my dad from my bedroom window leave for work early in the mornings. He would come home as soon as he could, dirty and tired but never too tired for us kids. Even with the struggles he would still smile and laugh. He loves telling stories and stupid jokes. But over the last few years, I've seen him smile less and less because of problems with his teeth. He has had upper dentures for the last 15 years, but recently has had serious infection in four of his bottom teeth (two of them had to be pulled). His dentist has warned him that he needs denture replacement. He has health and dental, but it doesn't cover dentures. He lives alone now and it's hard for him to come up with that extra money. I try and help as much as I can, but I am a single mother that works full time trying to get by myself. I would do anything for my dad. He needs upper and lower dentures, but he just doesn't have the money. I know he is worried about infection and it's painful for him to even eat and I think he gets embarrassed in public because of his teeth. He's always been my best friend and I'm just scared that if we don't fix this he'll have problems down the road. I really would just be able to help my dad smile again. https://darienchiropractor.com/herniated-discs/https://youtu.be/hS5I_ZfPQEA (watch this video for more info)If you've been grappling with back discomfort, you may be contemplating whether a bulging disc or a herniated disc is causing your back or neck pain. A bulging disc hints at a minor extension beyond its usual limits and can cause painful spinal nerve irritation. A herniated disc involves the inner core of the disc pushing through a tear in the outer layer, potentially causing pain, numbness, or weakness. The distinction between these conditions could be the key to addressing your spinal health concerns effectively. Herniated discs cause more severe symptoms than bulging discs. Bulging discs involve minor aches and pain, while herniated discs present as  more debilitating serious pain. Herniated discs cause radiating pain, numbness, or weakness. This can often lead to surgical intervention in serious cases. Are you sleeping with a bulging or herniated disc? Disc problems will prevent restful sleep. A slipped disc in the neck can cause you to lose restful sleep. A herniated disc in the back can prevent you from getting out of bed due to intense pain. What you should know is that conservative chiropractic care from Core Health Darien will help. Dr. Mc Kay was one of the first chiropractic clinics to offer non-surgical spinal decompression to treat bulging and herniated discs. nuqneH, friends! We ate'nt dead, despite what PocketCasts tells me when I open our show page.    This has been a long time in the works, mostly because editing caused me literal pain for several months. It's a short story, but quite dull. Herniated spinal disc; lots of opiates, yet still much lying on the floor wishing for the pain to end. At least SAD thought better of showing up, so small mercies and all that. Anyway. I've just finished editing the episode and just now realised that I should have written down everything that I said I would link in the show notes. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Cucumbers In Space by Dennis McCarthy:  YouTube Spotify Deep Space Nine Theme, with more guitars also by Dennis McCarthy: YouTube Spotify Captain of the Mount by Fall On Your Sword YouTube Spotify The Spotify version is quite different for legal reasons iirc, so it contains zero Shat. Why am I saying that like it's a bad thing? Eh. For me though, it works best as the unhinged ramblings of someone who thinks he has artistic vision, but I'm not going to deny the folks who made the track the opportunity to earn 0.002p from a listen. But srsly, Bill? Where no man has gone before?? It's El Capitan - pure hunners have been there before! Even women! sigh Data & Picard by that flaming heap of shite - I've linked to a video that uses the visuals that match the sampled lines from the show YouTube And another video about how awful Pogo is. Content warning - he's a raging bigot and uses disablism to try to cover it. The slurs are bleeped, but brace yourself. There's a lot of bleeping. Of Romulus: YouTube and Spotify Warp 11 (are they super-evolved salamanders?): YouTube and Spotify The Vulcan Freedom Fighters: Horta (where this all began for me, though a newer remix) and if you want to try for a spit-take, Spunk on Spock (Pon Farr). Here's their Spotify page, too! Saving the best? for last: The Firm, Star Trekkin'. In about 1990, my brother performed the Spock role in our local Scout and Guide Gang Show. I have no evidence, sadly. It doesn't seem to be on Spotify, sadly. The Firm, not by brother or the Gang Show from 35 years ago. There is maybe a weird kids' cover but I'm not messing up my algorithmic recommendations with that. I want to find new music I might enjoy, not torment my nephew with! I've likely missed a bunch of stuff, but if you join our Discord (it's free! But you can give us some money if you really want to) you can ask me there.  Our Facebook page is something like Facebook.com/angeltwopodcast. I think the twitter account still exists, but I deleted my personal account as soon as I was able to download my data and there's nothing that can induce me to go back to that hellsite, sorry. We are, however, on Bluesky and while swapping between accounts is still a bit cumbersome, there are significantly fewer neo-Nazis, which is nice.   P.S. Watch Deadloch! It's nothing even remotely like Star Trek, but it's hilarious and brilliant. If you're not used to Australian humour, stick with it past episode one - it's so worth the tiny effort. It's on Amazon Prime (at least, here it is) and probably the high seas if you understandably don't want to fund the corporate behemoth that will probably destroy us all. Even if they do have Picard without putting it behind the extra Paramount+ subscription.

This week, of course, we talked more about spinal stenosis, which I hope I don't have. I'm guessing I don't because I did not have nerve symptoms until about 2 weeks ago, so mine is from an acute injury. There's a lot that you can do shy of getting surgery, which often has a 4-6 week […]

On the show this week, I met up with Angi Campos of Egoscue Method San Francisco. I had read about Egoscue Method almost 10 years prior in the book Pain Free by Pete Egoscue. It was recommended by a friend to help treat my low back pain. I found the book fascinating, but the exercises seemed too simple and required 45 minutes of my time, and I just felt like I couldn't commit to that amount of time. Angi helped dispel all those myths and showed me how to correctly implement the Egoscue Method into my busy life. This episode is phenomenal, because we also film an almost 40 minute session of me going thru a typical Egoscue analysis and first time session. Angi used a camera and special computer program to help analyze my posture from four different views. From there, the computer correctly can help diagnose what exercises are needed to help rebalance my body. The photos were to say the least, eye opening. I couldn't believe the mechanical faults I was displaying. If you watch my session, you'll see that I ask Angi, “Based on my photos where do you think I experience pain.” She was able to say, “You probably experience right knee pain.” She was 100% right. I couldn't believe it.Then she walked analyzed my gait and how I walk. By making one simple adjustment, my gait improved 75% better, I was walking lighter (not so heavy like a thud thud sound every time I step). She then had me touch my toes, which I couldn't do without falling over. After a two minute isometric hold, I was touching my toes again. It was incredible! The idea behind Egoscue is restoring the posture and getting to the root cause of your problems to help extinguish pain that you might feel in your low back, hip, or knees (as they ware the most common). This is a phenomenal episode, and if you listen to this episode please contact your local practitioner or Angi at Egoscue San Francisco, because Angi is doing Zoom video conference postural analyses where she can actually use the same computer software to diagnose your structural issues remotely! How cool is that? Your first postural analysis session is free if you just mention JOEL and where you heard the episode. I can't thank Angi enough for offering this service to our listeners, it's people like her that make us realize we are all connected in a much bigger way, and I'm grateful for people like her that are out serving us every day.Timeline12:42 - How Angi got started with Egoscue17:00 - How Egoscue is different20:10 - Why Egoscue works22:18 - What's a typical session like27:02 - What are E-cises and how these exercises turn on our muscles?30:30 - Why just doing exercises to “turn on” the muscle might not work32:40 - Herniated discs & why they are not a big deal34:20 - How Egoscue practitioners can continue to support clients via ZOOM37:00 - Most common injury trends Angi is seeing in the clinic37:52 - Egoscue and professional athletes 41:20 - How often should patients come in and retest?45:20 - How do you make time for Egoscue?
