✅ Watch the MASTERCLASS on Low Back Pain & Sciatica. https://www.shapeshiftwellness.com/LBP-masterclass . Chronic pain is multifactorial, and is caused by many overlapping factors. Chronic low back pain and sciatica create neurochemical changes in the synapses in the body, spinal cord, and brain. It creates systemic chronic inflammation. Chronic back pain results in endocrine, vascular, and other changes. . The gate control theory of chronic pain shows that the "gates" can metaphorically be either open or closed, which impacts whether a person experiences chronic pain or not. . If the gates are open all the time, a person will have hypersensitivity and chronic low back pain and sciatica (or other chronic pain). . If we can figure out how to close the gates, then we will have an effective treatment for chronic pain. . . #lowbackpain #lowbackpainrelief #lowbackpainexercises #discherniation #sciaticarelief #sciatica #sciaticatreatment

✅ Watch the MASTERCLASS on Low Back Pain & Sciatica. https://www.shapeshiftwellness.com/LBP-masterclass . If you have chronic low back pain or sciatica, it's easy to think that the pain is all coming from tissue damage like a disc bulge, a disc herniation, disc degeneration, tight muscles, or a pinched nerve. . Research shows that in most cases of chronic pain, a large portion of the pain is NOT from damage, but rather from inflammation and hypersensitization of the nerves in the muscles, joints, and disc, through a process called peripheral sensitization. . Peripheral sensitization can make chronic low back pain and sciatica much worse by creating hypersensitivity to normal, non-damaging activities or movements. This is crucial in understanding the difference between safe pain and unsafe pain during chronic low back pain and sciatica rehab. . . #lowbackpain #lowbackpainrelief#lowbackpainexercises #discherniation #sciaticarelief#sciatica #sciaticatreatment

✅ Watch the MASTERCLASS on Low Back Pain & Sciatica. https://www.shapeshiftwellness.com/LBP-masterclass . Chronic low back pain and sciatica can not be reduced down to a single structure like a disc herniation, disc degeneration, muscle tightness, or posture. . Chronic low back pain and sciatica are multifactorial. There are many overlapping factors leading to chronic pain. The root causes of chronic pain can include physical structural sensitivity, but also stress, anxiety, fear, poor recovery, poor nutrition, and so on. . We cannot blame chronic pain on a single structure. Even when a single structure is indeed injured, still we find that chronic pain is amplified by many non-structural factors. . This is why it's so important to zoom out and look at the big picture in order to rehab chronic low back pain and sciatica.
✅ Watch the MASTERCLASS on Low Back Pain & Sciatica. https://www.shapeshiftwellness.com/LBP-masterclass . What is the real root cause of chronic low back pain and sciatica? There are only three types of pain: nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic. Discover the neuroscience behind each type and learn why chronic pain persists even after injuries heal. What Causes Chronic Pain? Understand the difference between nociceptive pain (damage or inflammation), neuropathic pain (true nerve pain), and nociplastic pain (neuroplastic changes in the nervous system). Nociceptive Pain Explained: Find out how acute injuries like touching a hot stove lead to nociceptive pain and why this is the least common type of pain in chronic conditions. Neuropathic Pain Demystified: Learn about true nerve pain conditions like sciatica and how to differentiate between neuropathic pain and referred pain. The Truth About Nociplastic Pain: Uncover the role of neuroplasticity in chronic pain and why it's a full-body nervous system issue rather than just being “in your head.” . Understanding what nociplastic (sometimes called neuroplastic) pain is can be critical in understanding the best treatment for chronic low back pain and sciatica. Some people who have researched John Sarno and TMS (tension myositis syndrome) sometimes walk away believing that pain is "all in their head." This couldn't be further from the truth. All three causes of chronic pain have REAL causes, and REAL solutions.
What is the real root cause of chronic low back pain and sciatica? What causes chronic pain in the first place? . If you have chronic low back pain or sciatica, you've probably gone down the rabbit hole of trying to improve core stability or core strength. You've tried to fix your posture, pelvic tilt, leg length, muscle imbalances, tight psoas, and a million other postural or alignment variables. . These things are NOT the cause of chronic back pain or sciatica. . Well, you think maybe it's caused by the disc herniation, disc bulge, or disc degeneration? . Maybe, but probably not. This series will teach you the real root cause of chronic low back pain and sciatica. . I'll teach you pain neuroscience education, AKA pain science, so you understand how the body processes pain in the first place. You'll learn the difference between nociception and pain, and how pain doesn't always indicate harm. . ✅ Watch the MASTERCLASS on Low Back Pain & Sciatica. https://www.shapeshiftwellness.com/LBP-masterclass

This episode is brought to you by Birch, Plunge, and AquaTru. Back pain is a common affliction exacerbated by our modern and sedentary lifestyles. This discomfort frequently hinders work and daily activities. Our guest today delves into the back's anatomy, identifying movements—or lack thereof—that contribute to pain and discussing factors contributing to its increasing prevalence. Today, on The Dhru Purohit Show, Dhru and Dr. Stuart McGill delve deep into back pain. Dr. McGill shares insights into why back pain is so prevalent, dispels myths surrounding it, and discusses the types of repetitive stress and strain that can lead to chronic pain. He also outlines his approach to treating back pain and highlights the limitations clinicians face in treating their patients. Dr. Stuart McGill is a distinguished professor emeritus at the University of Waterloo and the chief scientific officer at Backfitpro Inc. McGill has written more than 200 scientific publications on the topics of lumbar function, low back injury mechanisms, investigation of tissue loading during rehabilitation programs, and the formulation of work-related injury avoidance strategies. He has received several awards for his work, including the Volvo Bioengineering Award for Low Back Pain Research from Sweden. I met NBA Denver Nugget's Forward Michael Porter, Jr. at a rather low point in his life. He had been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease while still in his teens, and by the time we crossed paths he'd had three back surgeries that didn't cure his pain. In fact, in the Summer of 2023 when we came together, he was in a flare so bad he was struggling to walk up the stairs. Thankfully for Mike, he is blessed with an open mind and a curious nature. He knew after surgery #3 that he had to find another way to look at his pain, or risk losing his career. After discovering Dr. Sarno's work, he quickly came across mine. Michael's life has never been the same. He dove into JournalSpeak, boldly and bravely looking at the places he was holding anger, grief, and shame. He examined his childhood, and made profound connections about things like achieving in basketball and his perception of being loved. Paired with the essentials of a TMS mindset and an understanding of the brain science, unearthing these core emotions and truths set him free. Today, Michael is (pun intended) at the top of his game. He has no chronic back pain whatsoever, and when he gets even a hint of a sensation, he need only employ the principles of MindBody medicine to send it on its way. I could go on forever about his uncommon wisdom for a 25-year-old, but I'd rather you hear it from Michael yourself. Welcome to the AAA-Team's special episode of Join the Docs, and today, we're exploring the explosive world of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) starring your favourite dynamic duo with their trusty sidekick Slim the skeleton! It's no joke - this condition is a big deal, so join Doctor Nigel Guest and Professor Jonathan Sackier and buckle up for a rib-tickling ride through the twists and turns of AAA.Your aorta, the main blood vessel supplying your gut, kidneys assorted organs, pelvis, and legs, suddenly decides to blow up like a balloon. That's what we call an abdominal aortic aneurysm. But set your funny bones aside, because if that balloon bursts, it's no party — it can be life threatening! AAA can be triggered by a variety of genetics and lifestyle choices, with smoking, high blood pressure, and sky high cholesterol levels being the usual suspects. Now, the symptoms of AAA are sneaky little devils. So what should you look out for? Chronic back pain and discomfort “downstairs” are two tell-tale signs. If not addressed, AAA can even cause sudden death! But fear not, The Docs are here to make sure you're armed and ready to tackle it head-on.Prevention and early detection are our bread and butter (well…easy on the butter). What measures can be taken, especially even for over 55s accustomed to smoking a pack of 20 cigarettes daily, or individuals with a family history of health issues, even if they seem perfectly healthy? The Docs discuss screening techniques like ultrasound and CT scans to proactively catch an abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) before it catches you.For the itty-bitty, less immediately serious aneurysms, it's a good idea to keep them in your peripheral vision, with regular screening. But if they start getting too big for their boots, it's time to ‘go all in' and have a surgeon visit your AAA. Whether it's performing surgery to address abdominal issues or inserting a stent to protect your arteries, rest assured, we've got the right tools to fix you up good as new. It's not all about what we can do in the operating room. Lifestyle changes are the real superheroes here. Quitting smoking, reducing your blood pressure, and keeping cholesterol levels in check are the ways to go. Hard to stomach, but worth the change. So, remember, knowledge is power! Stay on top of your health, get regular check-ups, and don't be afraid to make some changes along the way. With a bit of know-how and the right care, we'll beat AAA together and keep you laughing all the way to good health!—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show.
