1/23/25 - Dr. Monica Miller is a nationally known pro-life leader, having been involved in the pro-life movement since 1976. She is the founder of Citizens for a Pro-life Society and author of several articles published on theological subjects and life-issues. Her work has appeared in This Rock, The National Catholic Register, Homiletic and Pastoral Review, The New Oxford Review, Fidelity Magazine, and Crisis Magazine. Since 1976, Monica Miller has made it her life's work to defend the unborn: she has counseled pregnant women outside abortion clinics and organized pro-life groups and sit-ins at many of those same clinics. She has blocked abortionists' cars, been arrested, and gone to jail. And she has pulled the bodies of thousands of unborn babies out of dumpsters and given them a proper burial. Abandoned: The Untold Stories of the Abortion Wars is the story of those children abandoned by abortion, and it is the story of their courageous defenders. It tells the profound, breathtaking, and often daring journey of one woman, but it is much more than that. It is a history of the Pro-Life movement since Roe vs. Wade, a suspenseful, true-life tale of life and death, an insightful look into the unique and terrible horror of abortion, and a plea for the protection of the most helpless and innocent members of the human family. 12/12/24 - Monica Miller, Ph.D. is a nationally known pro-life leader, having been involved in the pro-life movement since 1976. The signature evils of our day—abortion, pornography, personal alienation, sex and gender confusion, breakdown of marriages and families, countless souls caught in the grip of the culture of death—have one crucial thing in common: humanity's prideful rejection of God's created order. To combat this modern folly, we need ancient wisdom; in fact, we need to go all the way back to creation's very first days. In the Beginning takes you through a unique reading of the first three chapters of Genesis, unfolding the richness of the divinely revealed creation story and what it has to say about God, the world, and the destiny of mankind. Sam Sawyer, S.J., editor-in-chief of America Media, returns to “Preach” to discuss his Advent homily series, designed to be more cohesive than the usual week-to-week, stand-alone Sunday homilies that preachers typically prepare. Sam shares with host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., how Pope Francis' latest encyclical, Dilexit Nos, inspired him to create these homilies for the season, specially commissioned for Homiletic & Pastoral Review. Over the four weeks, Sam leads the congregation through a four-part reflection on the heart: awakening the heart, trusting its activity and passion, recognizing our heart's capacity to desire something greater, and embracing God's grace in our heart as it overflows from within us Read the full text of this week's homily and Scripture readings. In this Episode… Glen is a guest on Real Presence Radio discussing the importance of men in our culture, especially as leaders. Men have shamed, confused, and have taken a back seat to the feminist movement. That's why there's a need for the men's conference movement. Come Feb. 3, 2024, Mission Blueprint is hosting another men's conference at Old Sanctuary in Brookings, S.D. This years featured speakers include Fr. Jeff Norfolk, a priest in the diocese of Sioux Falls. Fr. Jeff is a formation advisor at St. John Vianney Seminary. Kevin Wells is a former award-winning sports reporter with the Tampa Tribune, where he covered Major League Baseball and other sports. He is the best-selling author of The Priests We Need to Save the Church, a written plea for holy priests to live like the paragons, martyrs, and great saints before them. His book was quickly disseminated in bulk to seminarians across America. Many hundreds of clergy throughout the world have read Kevin's book. Kevin is a writer whose articles have appeared at Crisis Magazine, Catholic Exchange, LifeSiteNews, The National Catholic Register, One Peter Five, and Homiletic and Pastoral Review. James Stack – the longtime best friend of his murdered uncle, Msgr. Thomas Wells. To this day, witnesses in the neuro-ICU room tell of the miracle that unfolded at his bedside. It's Natural Family Planning (NFP) Awareness Week in the US, so Dominic and Paul talk about NFP in light of the Church's teaching about the individual consciences and the law of gradualism. Paul also shares some of his personal experience with NFP and being a part of the NFP subculture. “We have long thought that simply by stressing doctrinal, bioethical and moral issues, without encouraging openness to grace, we were providing sufficient support to families, strengthening the marriage bond and giving meaning to marital life. We find it difficult to present marriage more as a dynamic path to personal development and fulfillment than as a lifelong burden. We also find it hard to make room for the consciences of the faithful, who very often respond as best they can to the Gospel amid their limitations, and are capable of carrying out their own discernment in complex situations. We have been called to form consciences, not to replace them” (Pope Francis, Amoris Laetitia). The content for this episode comes from an article Paul wrote in 2020 for Homiletic & Pastoral Review: https://www.hprweb.com/2020/12/the-sweetness-of-the-yoke-of-christ/ ABOUT POPE FRANCIS GENERATION Pope Francis Generation is the show for Catholics struggling with the Church's teaching, who feel like they might not belong in the Church anymore, and who still hunger for a God of love and goodness. The Catholic Church has embarked on a two-year synodal pathway towards the Synod of Bishops on synodality in 2023. Women's submissions to the synodal process must be made “as public as possible” in order to prevent any attempt to airbrush them out, theologian and broadcaster, Professor Tina Beattie said at a webinar hosted by the Tablet. The retired Professor of Catholic Studies at the University of Roehampton said making submissions public would ensure that “if our voices are airbrushed out, or if the things we say that they don't like are airbrushed out, we can say this is not discernment. It is censorship”. Natalie K. Watson, Publishing Editor of the Pastoral Review, was in conversation with Tina Beattie, Penelope Middelboe, author and podcaster, Daisy Srblin, chief executive of the Catholic charity Million Minutes, and Dr Alana Harris, director of Liberal Arts and Senior Lecturer in Modern British History at King's College, London, about synodality and the experience of women in the Catholic Church. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-tablet/message

The focus of today's episode is St. Augustine's understanding of sin as self-sabotage, and why it is that we do the things we always ultimately regret and accuse ourselves of. Of course, in his life, Augustine comes to know the healing and rest found in the person of Christ, Incarnate, Crucified, Risen, and extended through his body, the Church. Guiding us through all of this today is Fr. David Vincent Meconi, S.J., who is Associate Professor of Historical Theology as well as the Director of the Catholic Studies Centre at Saint Louis University; he is also the editor of Homiletic and Pastoral Review. Father earned his doctorate in Ecclesiastical History from the University of Oxford. He has published numerous books and articles on the early Church, and on Saint Augustine in particular. Following the lead of Pope Benedict XVI and synthesizing insights from his book on the subject, in this lecture Dr. Matthew Ramage will set out to answer these above questions by wedding the historical-critical approach with a theological reading of Scripture based in the patristic-medieval tradition. Whereas these two approaches are often viewed as mutually exclusive or even contradictory, Ramage will insist that the two are mutually enriching and necessary for doing justice to the Bible's most challenging texts. TRANSCRIPT Even before the COVID scamdemic, countless people suffered from mental and emotional illnesses. Many of you know that my own mother, whose sufferings and offerings on my behalf returned me to the Faith, suffered enormously from mental illness. She had crippling bipolar depression as well as acute obsessive-compulsive disorder — massive crosses not only for her, but for the whole family. Her mental pains were likely brought on by an occasion when she was just 20, where she was brutally raped by her father in law while my father was temporarily away on short-term military duty. He had married her in England and, a few months later, brought his new bride back to his hometown near Dayton, Ohio, as he was decommissioning from the U.S. Air Force. I knew none of this until the evening of the day when my father and I buried my mom — and my dad unburdened himself of a torturous secret he kept for over 50 years. That rape became the unknown, quiet horror at the center of our family, its tentacles reaching into every aspect of our lives and emotionally crippling my mother. Through it all, it was the Faith of her childhood, instilled in her by fiercely-Catholic Irish parents, which kept her hanging on, and, yes, sometimes it was by the barest of threads. It was only years afterward that I learned from her that, while I was in high school one afternoon, she sat on the edge of the bed with a lethal amount of sleeping pills in her hand — ready to end the pain of her life. Faith kept her hanging on, sometimes by the barest of threads. A split moment before she ingested them, she had the inspiration to call information (411 for those of you who remember those days) and be connected to a random parish — where a priest actually answered the phone. I have no idea who that priest was, but he was able to convince my mom to put the pills down, speaking with her about eternity. I share this with you to underscore that, in the end, the only real cure for a soul afflicted with mental anguish is God. Current psychotherapy has been completely divorced from the Divine for decades, and it is the patients who suffer even more as a result. Because of the increase in mental problems (which are, at their base, problems in the soul), Church Militant has produced a brand new Premium program on mental health. Our expert is Thomistic psychologist Dr. G.C. Dilsaver, a man so respected in his field Catholic University Press said of him, in 2007, he "is rightly considered by many to be the father of Christian psychology." Dr. Dilsaver has been around the field a long time and published a book on dealing with mental pain, Imago Dei Psychotherapy. One of the most reliable priests you will ever meet, Fr. Kenneth Baker, editor of Homiletic and Pastoral Review for years, said of the book: In this treatise on clinical psychology, we find a current presentation which is fully in accord with traditional scholastic philosophy and theology. The whole Catholic worldview of man, made in the image of God, a composite being of spirit and matter, is the philosophical basis of Imago Dei Psychotherapy. This is an invaluable tool for Catholic counselors, psychologists and psychiatrists whose goal it is to bring their therapants to a state of mental health which is in accord with both the natural law and divine revelation. It would be foolish to think that every institution except the field of mental health has been invaded by anti-Christian forces. Of course it has been invaded. Nothing has escaped the taint and stench of the diabolical. And, just as in the field of media (like us here at Church Militant and many other faithful Catholics laboring in their own fields of expertise), it will be faithful Catholics that will help restore and claim back what the Devil has so thoroughly corrupted. Psychology is no exception. Even before the COVID scamdemic, countless people suffered from mental illness. New episodes of our Premium program on mental health and the Catholic life come out each Friday every week, and, of course, all of them are available for viewing at any time for Premium members. If you are not yet a Premium member here at Church Militant, we highly encourage you to sign up today. For only $10 a month, you not only get access to this newest addition to the Premium lineup, but on-demand access to hundreds of other episodes covering a wide range of topics in the Catholic life. Church Militant has not changed the cost of being a Premium member since we first rolled out this feature more than a decade ago, and we have no plans to do so. We know money is tight for many people these days — thanks to the current political climate producing increasingly harsh economic conditions for families — and we want to keep our Premium content always available. So please, click on the link and sign up today so you can enjoy hundreds and hundreds of hours of content for the good of your soul. This newest show (Mental Health: Catholic Perspective) carries the very message that convinced my mother to put down those pills and pick up her Cross, as mightily heavy as it was. Catholicism is life, eternal life, and it is this Faith which teaches us that pain is temporary. Victory is forever.
