First up this week, International News Editor David Malakoff joins host Sarah Crespi to discuss the most recent developments in U.S. science under Donald Trump's second term, from the impact of tariffs on science to the rehiring of probationary employees at the National Science Foundation.   Next, we tackle the question of extra-pair paternity in people—when marriage or birth records of parentage differ from biological parentage. Contributing Correspondent Andrew Curry writes about researchers looking into the question of how often children are genetically unrelated to their presumed fathers by using genealogy and genetic testing.   Finally, Susanne Schweizer, Scientia associate professor at the University of New South Wales, talks about her article on intrusive thoughts in the perinatal period as part of a special issue on women's health in Science Advances. Almost all pregnant and recent mothers experience intrusive thoughts about harm coming to their offspring. Schweizer and colleagues suggest gaining a better understanding of intrusive thoughts during this highly predictable window could help explain the phenomenon more broadly.   This week's episode was produced with help from Podigy.   About the Science Podcast Learn more about your ad choices. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 29, 2024 is: omniscient • ahm-NISH-unt • adjective Omniscient describes someone or something with unlimited knowledge or understanding. // "You'll need to tell me when you don't understand something I've explained," Maria said. "I'm not omniscient, you know." See the entry > Examples: "The Abrahamic faiths conceive of God as an omniscient creator and generally abjure gambling as a result; one of the first laws passed by the Puritans in the Massachusetts Bay Colony banned the possession of cards, dice, or gaming tables." — Idrees Kahloon, The New Yorker, 2 Sept. 2024 Did you know? One who is omniscient literally knows all. The word omniscient traces back to two Latin roots: omni-, meaning "all" or "universally," and the noun scientia, meaning "knowledge." You will recognize omni- as the prefix that tells all in such words as omnivorous ("eating all," or in actual use, "eating both plants and animals") and omnipotent ("all-powerful"). Scientia comes from the Latin verb scīre, meaning "to know," which likewise has a number of other knowledge-related descendants in English, including conscience, science, and prescience (meaning "foreknowledge").

Well, well, well... you don't a much stronger start to a game than that! Xenosaga III REALLY impressed me in its opening act. This is by far the most polished product of this trilogy, and we're excited to share our incites with you on all the great symbolism and strong setups here. Following her resignation from Vector, Shion teams up with Scientia to investigate the company's secrets while Allen takes her place looking after KOS-MOS. Meanwhile, Canaan, Jr., Jin, chaos, MOMO, and Ziggy investigate a landmass floating through space that originated from Lost Jerusalem. Margulis attacks them in response, and the landmass is swallowed up in an inverted pocket of hyperspace, which the Elsa also falls into. Meanwhile, Shion visits Allen and sees a demonstration of two new weapons for fighting the Gnosis—T-elos, a battle robot meant to replace KOS-MOS, and Omega, a mech created from the remains of the Proto Omega and piloted by Abel. After the test, T-elos' creator, Roth Mantel, informs Allen that KOS-MOS will be scrapped in favor of T-elos. Because KOS-MOS's weaponry is the only way to break into the hyperspace pocket and save the Elsa, Shion leads the group into the facility and rescues KOS-MOS, guided at one point by Abel. Nephilim visits Shion frequently during this time, and Shion begins to experience a series of blackouts where U-DO contacts her. These events are observed by Wilhelm, who is working with the Testaments to find Abel his Ark. Entering the hyperspace pocket, the group finds the Elsa and investigates the area, encountering both Albedo and Virgil and learning that the Vessels of Anima powering their E.S. mechs are critical to the Testaments' plans. They are then confronted by Mantel—who reveals himself as the Red Testament—and T-elos. T-elos nearly kills KOS-MOS, but Shion's pendant activates and seemingly transports the group to the planet Miltia fifteen years in the past.

Medvirkende:

Today, we'll be covering the story of how Shion finally got fired from Vector. While Jin Uzuki investigates Gnosis Terrorism—a new phenomenon in which Gnosis under a person's control attack high-population centers—he finds a mysterious young Realian girl being taken care of by the Subcommittee on Close Encounters and Juli Mizrahi. The Subcommittee lab is attacked, and an agent named Doctus, who was sent by an anti-UMN organization called Scientia, kidnaps the Realian girl. Jin and Shion pursue Doctus to a Scientia vessel and are caught. The Captain of the vessel attempts to explain the situation to them, revealing the dangers of the UMN and Vector's role in funding the research that led to the events on Miltia 14 years ago. As Scientia conducts an analysis on the Realian girl, a power awakens in her, and Shion is rendered unconscious as the Realian disappears from the lab. Jin works with Doctus to conduct an encephalon dive into Ars Nova, a top-secret area of the UMN sealed by Vector. There, Jin confronts Grimoire Verum, the father of Nephilim and the orchestrator behind the recent Gnosis attacks. Grimoire attempts to use the Realian as a vessel for his daughter's consciousness, but the Realian girl rejects her memories, and the song of Nephilim turns her into a Gnosis. Grimoire's consciousness is destroyed, but Shion is able to help the Realian regain her memories, calling her by her true name, Almadel. It is revealed that Shion's father had experimented on Almadel, and Shion had befriended her and tried to comfort her in her distress. This also unlocks repressed memories for Shion. Almadel then realizes that she must sacrifice herself to stop the Song of Nephilim from resonating throughout the universe. Shion has an emotional breakdown in response but is roused and comforted by Jin. As a result of this incident, Shion is demoted within Vector, but due to her conflicted feelings about Vector's involvement in all of this and their attempted coverup, she leaves Vector without saying goodbye to KOS-MOS and joins Scientia.

Education and training are essential elements in all jobs - doubly so for the protective security industry and those involved in more martial sectors. This lecture was given on October 15, 2022 as part of the Fall Thomistic Circles conference, "Life in the Cosmos: Contemporary Science, Philosophy, and Theology on the Origin and Persistence of Life on Earth(and Beyond?)." The two-day conference at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. featured a stellar, cross-disciplinary lineup of speakers: scientists Jonathan Lunine (Cornell University) and Maureen Condic (University of Utah), philosopher Christopher Frey (University of South Carolina), and theologian Fr. Mauriusz Tabaczek, O.P. (Angelicum). This conference is part of the Thomistic Institute's Scientia Project. For more information on upcoming events, visit thomisticinstitute.org About the speaker: Fr. Mariusz Tabaczek, O.P. is a Polish Dominican and theologian. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophical theology from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA and a Church Licentiate from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland. After his studies at the GTU and a fellowship at the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Studies, he returned to Poland. For three years he worked as a researcher at the Thomistic Institute in Warsaw, a lecturer at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in Warsaw and the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Krakow, and a director of the Studium Dominicanum in Warsaw. He then moved to Rome where he serves as a professor of theology at the Angelicum and a researcher for the Thomistic Institute Angelicum. He is interested in the science-theology dialogue, especially in the issues concerning science and creation theology, divine action, and evolutionary theory. His research also goes to other subjects related to systematic, fundamental, and natural theology, philosophy of nature, philosophy of science (philosophy of biology, in particular), philosophy of causation, and metaphysics. His works address a whole range of topics, including: the notion of species, metaphysics of evolutionary transitions, concurrence of divine and natural causes in evolutionary transitions, definition and role of chance and teleology in evolution, classical and new hylomorphism, classical and contemporary (analytical) concepts of causation, emergence, science-oriented panentheism and its critique, and various aspects of divine action in the universe. He published a number of articles on metaphysics and the issues concerning the relation between theology and science in Zygon, Theology and Science, Scientia et Fides, Nova et Vetera, Forum Philosophicum, American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly, Sophia, and Polish Annals of Philosophy. He coauthored two chapters in the second edition of Science and Religion: A Historical Introduction (ed. by Gary Ferngren) and has written the entry on “Emergence” for the PalgraveEncyclopedia of the Possible. He is also the author of two monographs. The first, entitled Emergence: Towards A New Metaphysics and Philosophy of Science, was published in 2019 and was announced as one of the best metaphysics books to read in 2019 by Bookauthority. The second book, Divine Action and Emergence: An Alternative to Panentheism (published in 2021), offers a critical analysis of the theory of divine action based on the notion of emergent phenomena and provides a constructive proposal of a theological reinterpretation of divine action in emergence from the point of view of the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition of philosophy and theology.

In this episode, we talk with Heather Couture about how to make deep learning models for tissue image analysis more robust to domain shift. Supervised deep learning has made a strong mark in the histopathology image analysis space, however, this is a data-centric approach. We train the image analysis solution on whole slide images and want them to perform on other whole slide images - images we did not train on. The assumption is that the new images will be similar to the ones we train the image analysis solution on, but how similar do they need to be? And what is domain and domain shift?Domain: a group of similar whole slide images (WSI). E.g., WSIs coming from the same scanner or coming from the same lab. We train our deep learning model on these WSIs, so we call it our source domain. We later want to use this model and target a different group of images, e.g. images from a different scanner or a different lab - our target domain. When applying a model trained on a source domain to a target domain we shift the domain and the domain shift can have consequences for the model performance. Because of the differences in the images the model usually performs worse...How can we prevent it or minimize the damage?Listen to Heather explain the following 5 ways to handle the domain shift:Standardize the appearance of your images with stain normalization techniquesColor augmentation during training to take advantage of variations in stainingDomain adversarial training to learn domain-invariant featuresAdapt the model at test time to handle the new image distributionFinetune the model on the target domainClick here to read Heather's full article on making histopathology image analysis models more robust to domain shift.Visit Pixel Scientia Labs here. And listen to our previous episode titled "Why machine learning expertise is needed for digital pathology projects" here to learn more about the subjects and learn how Heather and her company can help.

What do cancer and climate change have in common? Both are very serious problems and in both, machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to support potential solutions. Even though these AI applications may seem very different the ML methods used to support work on both problems are very similar. Today's episode's guest, Heather Couture from Pixel Scientia Labs does exactly that – fights cancer and climate change with AI. She is a computer scientist specializing in computer vision machine learning and deep learning. She started her company during her Ph.D. when she was doing contract work and expanded her work after receiving her degree. She assists companies with accelerating their machine learning projects by distilling and adapting cutting-edge research and applying her over 16 years of experience in the field for analyzing images. Not only does she stay on top of the current research herself, but she also posts about it on LinkedIn several times a week, extracting the most important and actionable information out of the most recent publications on machine learning applications in pathology. Her consulting company gives her the opportunity to optimize her work for impact and get engaged with companies and projects that can really make a difference. Teamwork is important in every area of life, but in the medical domain and especially in pathology it acquires a whole new dimension. No longer is it possible for a single observer to analyze the data in conjunction with the pathology images. The use of computer vision algorithms is often a must and to come up with medically and diagnostically relevant solutions the domain experts from pathology and computer vision need to work together. In clinical settings and in medically focused companies machine learning expertise is necessary to leverage the power of artificial intelligence and apply it to their problems and challenges. Heather supports her clients with such tasks as nuclear detection and classification, mitosis detection, segmentation of different tissue types in pathology images, stain normalization, and other techniques to enable a deep learning model to generalize images from a different scanner. All these things come into a lot of different projects, even if the project endpoints vary. Another important aspect of every deep learning project is data collection and data labeling. Are you working with deep learning for pathology image analysis? If so, visit https://pixelscientia.com/ to learn more about the machine learning expertise you can leverage for your projects.

Catherine Sarah Young is an award-winning artist, designer, and writer. She uses her background in molecular biology, fine art, and interaction design to create interdisciplinary and experimental artworks on the environment. We discuss her unique approach to climate change awareness, including taking inspiration from the Egyptian Book of the Dead to produce art on the Australian bushfire crisis, as well as creating perfume and sewer soap to make the effects of climate change more tangible (because, as she points out, we all have “dying polar bear fatigue”). Cat has collaborated with researchers, industry, and non-profit organizations all over the world, including in the Amazon rainforest, with the Museum of Cosmonautics in Moscow, the University of the Underground in London*, and the Mekong Cultural Hub. She is currently a Scientia scholar at UNSW Sydney Art and Design working on climate change and sustainability, an Obama Leader for Asia-Pacific, and part of Team HB6 of Homeward Bound for Antarctica (100 women with a background in STEMM – science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine). Despite all the international acclaim she has received, she places more value on “milestones of resilience” and incremental improvement, drawing on her taekwondo training (she's a second-degree black belt) to impart life lessons. This episode is dedicated to anyone trying to approach a problem from a creative new angle, everyone going through the process of "unlearning," as well as all the interdisciplinary thinkers and martial artists out there. --- Follow Cat on Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook @catherinesarahyoung Follow Cat on Twitter @catherineyoung Visit her website www.theperceptionalist.com to learn more about the residencies and exhibitions she has done in Austria, China, Colombia, Finland, Germany, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United States, Uganda, et al! --- * Edit: My voiceover referred to the University of the Underground in Amsterdam. Lecture 4: EPISTEMOLOGY, METHODOLOGY AND DUALISM; KNOWLEDGE, CERTAINTY, LOGICAL POSITIVISM Video Slides TRANSCRIPT The Social Theory of Hoppe, Lecture 4: Epistemology, Methodology, and Dualism; Knowledge, Certainty, Logical Positivism Stephan Kinsella Mises Academy, Aug. 1, 2011 00:00:01 STEPHAN KINSELLA: … and methodology and epistemological dualism, the Austrian approach.  So if you recall, last time we talked about argumentation ethics and libertarian rights, and as I said, the midterm will be posted shortly.  And some of you may be interested in the IP talk I gave at Mises University on Wednesday, which I have a link to here on the slide two.   And Hoppe also gave two – he has several lectures, but two of them are particularly relevant for tonight actually.  The science of human action and praxeology as a method of economics are both great.  They cover a lot of what we're going to talk about tonight, actually. 00:00:42 00:00:47 So we're going to talk epistemology and methodology and dualism, which are the Misesian approach, and related aspects of logical positivism and knowledge and certainty.  And I'm just going to outline here the readings I had suggested that you read with certain pages of A Theory of Socialism and Capitalism, Hoppe's pamphlet, “Economic Science and the Austrian Method.”  I have my ragged old copy here from years in the past.  I don't know what the current version looks like, notes, so this is my favorite copy, and another paper from EEPP and another journal article on rationalism. 00:01:25 And then there are some supplemental readings if you want to go further.  But we're going to try to cover as much as we can here.  So let's start off talking about what we're talking – the subject of our lecture is the economic science and the methodology appropriate economic science or the discipline of economics.  So what do we mean by the word science?  I mean when I was in college and growing up, the word science to me meant what most people think of it now as technology, gadgets, gizmos, physics, theories, chemistry, things like this, things that are testable. 00:02:01 This is actually sort of a fairly new twist on the word science as caused by the rise of positivism and empiricism and what we might call scientism.  It's a much older term of course.  You see the little diagram on the right of some spooky government agency, the Information Awareness Office, but they have the all-knowing eye on top of the pyramid looking at the earth and the motto, Scientia est Potentia, which means knowledge is power.  So you see the word science there, meaning just general knowledge.  In the Lionel Robbins, famous sort of proto-Austrian economist, at one point, wrote a treatise in 1932, very influential treatise until the ‘50s probably called “The Nature and Significance of Economic Science.” 00:02:57 So you can see the word science is being used for even economics, although nowadays, most people would restrict it to the technical or natural sciences.  Back in the US Constitution in 1789, in the clause authorizing patent and copyright, look at how the words are arranged here.  This is the power granted to Congress to promote the progress of science and the useful arts by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their writings and discoveries. 00:03:30 So I've got in red here the words that pair together: science, authors, and writings.  Now, most people would think science has to do with inventions and inventors and discoveries.  But no,
