HCP - Ep. 197 - P.R.A.Y. (P.1 P&R)Larry and Drew welcome our friend and Pastor's advocate from Healthy Church Solutions to the pod today to discuss the prayer initiative that BMA Global is asking churches and individuals to be a part of for the National Meeting coming up in a couple of weeks. Today we focus on the first two letters of the P.R.A.Y. acronym (Praise and Repent) and how we have to get a right perspective of the Lord in order to prepare our hearts for any work. This is where it all begins - submitting to His will and way and then once we see Him for who He is, we will REPENT as a result and our hearts will be made ready for what He wants us to ask for and yield to.Show note links: http://bmamissions.org/prayerguide/https://healthychurchsolutions.org/self-guided-courses/how-to-create-a-prayer-system-at-your-church/You can email us at info@healthychurchpodcast.com orTo find more information about The Healthy Church Podcast go to:http://www.healthychurchpodcast.comor find us on FaceBook! For a video of today's podcast, you can find it on FaceBook or YouTube!

Abby and Patrick welcome psychoanalyst and clinical social worker Brian Ngo-Smith, President of the American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work (AAPCSW). Focusing on his paper “This Couch Has Bed Bugs: On the Homelessness of Psychoanalysis and the Psychoanalysis of Homelessness,” they talk about psychotherapy with unhoused clients and tensions between the priorities of psychoanalysis versus social work, the desire to help, and our society's hatred of dependence. Turning to D.W. Winnicott's ideas about hate in countertransference, they explore how unacknowledged hatred by caregivers for their patients manifests not only interpersonally but also in institutional behaviors and broader social policy. They also discuss Brian's recent work on the eros of care, including a paper entitled “Porosity and Preoccupation: Queer Thoughts on Psychoanalytic Care,” which he will deliver as the Gertrude and Ernst Ticho Memorial Lecture at the National Meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association in New York this February. According to a recent article by Christina Frangou in the Guardian, "doctors are dying by suicide at higher rates than the general population. Somewhere between 300 to 400 physicians a year in the US take their own lives, the equivalent of one medical school graduating class annually." This sobering statistic from the eye-opening Guardian article (aptly titled "US surgeons are killing themselves at an alarming rate. One decided to speak out") resonated with Your Doctor Friends, and we are fortunate enough to have the inspiration of that article, Dr. Carrie Cunningham HERE WITH US! Dr. Cunningham is an endocrine surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital and holds a professorship at Harvard. She was recently elected President of the Association of Academic Surgery. Her Presidential Address at the AAS 2023 National Meeting, titled “Removing the Mask” created quite a stir, as she shared her personal struggles with depression, anxiety, substance use disorder, and her connection to a friend and colleague (Dr. Christina "Tina" Barkley) who died by suicide. Imagine getting up in front of thousands of your colleagues and baring the most vulnerable parts of yourself. It took tons of courage, and the YouTube video of her address went viral. This week we try a bit of a “hybrid” format for Health Headlines. We just had to capitalize on this fantastic opportunity to speak directly with the subject of the article, and get her take straight from the source! Thanks for listening to this one, friends, it means a lot :) Resources from the episode include: The Guardian article, "US surgeons are killing themselves at an alarming rate. One decided to speak out." YouTube link to Dr. Carrie Cunningham's Presidential Address at the 2023 Academic Surgical Congress, titled "Removing the Mask." The 1973 JAMA article, "The Sick Physician. Impairment by Psychiatric Disorders, Including Alcoholism and Drug Dependence." The Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes' Foundation website. The Association of Academic Surgery's website. If politicians are paying more attention to the climate issue than ever before, perhaps it's because their constituents are more concerned than ever before. Earlier this year, a survey from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication showed that those who are “alarmed” now represent the largest segment of Yale's “Six Americas.” Our guest this month is Jennifer Carman, a postdoctoral associate with the Yale Program, whose research focuses on identifying and supporting behaviors that individuals and communities can take to adapt to both short- and long-term climate change impacts. She joins us for a conversation on how opinions and attitudes have shifted in recent years, lending more urgency for politicians to take action on climate change. In honor of the International Year of the Periodic Table, Stereo Chemistry explores the stories behind some of the elements in this episode. C&EN and ACS on Campus hosted periodic table pub trivia during the ACS Spring 2019 National Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Inspired by the event, its participants, and its questions, host Kerri Jansen investigated what it takes to make a new superheavy element, starting a half century ago and tracking the making of new elements through time. She tells the tales of scientists commonly associated with shaping the periodic table but also of the unsung heroes behind the scenes. A script of this podcast is available at our website. Kenny Parbel is the President of the Ohio Chapter and SGT. At-Arms for the National Chapter of Bearded Sinners. Upon learning of who the Bearded Sinners were, my world was opened to another side of the “bearding community” that I wasn’t aware existed. Both Kenny and I got our start in the club scene at the same event back in 2012 and didn’t even know we had crossed paths numerous times. We “officially” met at the Morgan Hose VFD fundraiser beard and mustache contest, EP.71 (http://thebeardcaster.libsyn.com/podcast/ep71-morgan-hose-volunteer-fire-department-fundraiser) and he pulled me aside and wanted to tell me about their annual fundraiser Pig Roast they hold that was coming up Labor Day weekend. We set up a time to meet and got together at a small bar in Ravena, Ohio and enjoyed a couple adult beverages and had a chat about beards and clubs and social issues. We talked about the history and nuances of The Bearded Sinners and how they have gone under my radar for the past few years. My eyes were really opened to a side of the beard “clubs” that don’t really participate in the competitive charity beard events and focus more on local community outreach and local fundraising. We also discussed the issues of assembling chapters of a club and the problems they have come across in the past. If you like the message of the Bearded Sinners and are interested in checking out more about their club goto https://www.facebook.com/BSBCOHIO/ to get more information. William Moulton Marston, a scholar from Tufts and Columbia universities, the inventor of Polygraph (lie detector) technology stepped out of academia and into the world of pop culture in the October 1941 edition of All Star Comics. Marston was a sort of Alter Ego to the marketing genius of Stan Lee who fascinated boys across America with heroes like Captain America, the X-Men, Hulk, and Iron Man. Marston feared that comic books were becoming too violent with their, “blood curdling masculinity”. So to curb the descent to depravity Marston conceptualized a new character - Wonder Woman. This woman would be stronger than her male counterparts, from an Amazon Island was uninhabited and uninfluenced by men. She would even employee Marston’s polygraph technology with her golden lasso of truth. Wonder Woman became an icon of the feminist movement throughout the 50’s and 60’s. Not surprisingly, Wonder Woman re-emmerged last year to become the highest grossing superhero origin film of all time. What is happening in our culture to create an environment for Marston’s Diana to re-emmerge? Perhaps at no time since the 60’s has there been more bewilderment and confusion over the role of women in our culture. ILLUSTRATION: The “Boy Scouts of America” have been caught in the quagmire of this cultural confusion. The concept of scouting began in 1907, when Robert Baden-Powell formed the organization as an avenue for the development of “muscular Christianity” among boys. In the mid 1900’s Boy Scout organizations around the world began to move away from distinctly Christian lingo in it’s handbooks in preference of a more broadly Deistic language. In 2005 accommodations were made for those who were Muslim, Wiccan, and others according to the Times of London “Scouting is available to all faiths and, therefore, must take account of the different religious obligations of its members,” according to new scouting guidelines. In 2015 the role of openly gay scouts and scout masters came into question. As former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced to the National Meeting of B.S.A., “we must deal with the world as it is, not as we might wish it to be.” Recently, the B.S.A. dropped the word, “Boy” from it’s branding - opting for the more gender neutral, “Scouts” and opening the door for girls and to participate in the organization. ILLUSTRATION: The #metoo movement has radiated through Hollywood annihilating producers and movie stars in it’s wake. News icons like Matt Laurer and Tom Brokaw were not immune, now Politicians are feeling the effect. ILLUSTRATION: Churches aren’t immune either. Just this week - a coalition of Southern Baptist women released a open letter to the trustees of Southeastern Seminary regarding sermon excerpts taken from that institutions President Dr. Paige Patterson. Someone had uncovered statements he made some sermons, some over 14 years ago and compiled them to create a narrative that seems indefensible. IN THIS IS THE CULTURE to which we desperately need a new and better Wonder Woman. That is what God gives us in Proverbs. Before introducing us to her - Solomon Introduces a couple of other women to which we may compare and contrast Pro. 31. The Foolish Woman Proverbs 14:1 (NASB95) 1 The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish tears it down with her own hands. The Hebrew Word for Foolish Means- Thick, dull and sluggish or lazy to the things of God. She is bent on destruction. She tears down her home with her own hands. Notice what marks the life of a foolish woman. The Foolish Woman is Boisterous Proverbs 9:13 13 The woman of folly is boisterous, What does it mean to be boisterous? Constant commotion and turbulence. It literally means to murmur in the heart. Or to murmur under one’s breath. It was for murmuring in the dessert that God ended the life of his own people. Paul wrote the Church at Phillipi and warned them to do all things without murmuring or complaining. God didn’t tolerate it in His people and you shouldn’t tolerate it in yourself. This girl finds the pattern of her life to be one of chaos. She is the quintessential drama queen. Never learning how to lead a quite life in all godliness. Beware Parents; the boisterous, murmuring daughter will one day be what God calls the foolish woman. She will take that same foolishness into her job, her family, your grandkids will be raised by that kind of a mother. Not only is she boisterous… The Foolish Woman is Naïve Pro. 9:13b She is naive and knows nothing. Now that doesn’t mean that she literally knows nothing.. she knows how to tie her shoes, she knows how to work a cell phone, But this is speaking of a girl or a woman who is void of weighty knowledge. Someone said, There are no lighthouses in the harbor of her soul. She finds herself regularly thrown against the rocks of turbulence. She does not think deeply She does not examine carefully. We have said in this series - the Wise Woman can zoom out and see how decisions effect many people over a long range of time… but the foolish woman only sees the immediate effect of her decisions, what is right in front of her. As a result she is a victim of the person, the philosophy, the theology with the greatest emotional sway. It’s not to be that way among you ladies, you are to know those things that are worth dying for, and thereby those things that are worth living for. You learn to discriminate between that which is of temporal value and that which is of eternal value. Learn the difference between the sacred and the common. The foolish woman is boisterous, she is naïve… The Contentious Woman Proverbs 19:13 13 b. the contentions of a wife are a constant dripping. The Word Contentious Means – One given to strife, one easily angered, never content and never satisfied. This girl will argue for the sake of arguing. Invariably the outcome is misery for those around her. THOUGHT - I’ve met gals like this before and I thought to myself , I’m glad I’m not married to her. But someone is. ILLUSTRATION; During the Korean War, the Koreans would take our POW's, isolate them in a room and they would let water drip because they knew that 24 hours a day. Constant dripping could break them down emotionally, and breaking them emotionally, they could get anything they wanted to out of them. God's Word says a quarrelsome daughter is that kind of a thing. A constant dripping. Living with a contentious woman is like getting nibbled to death by a Chihuahua. Chuck Swindoll said, It is my observation that all things being equal contentious mothers raise contentious daughters. Compare and Contrast the Foolish and Contentious Woman to… 3. The Excellent Woman We are all very familiar with Prov. 31, but you may not know that in the Hebrew it was written in the form of an Acrostic, working it’s way through the Hebrew Alphabet verse by verse. This is a clue that it was written to be memorized and taught to the youth of Israel. Also, notice it’s from the Mother of Lemuel… that is significant you and need to remember it. Proverbs 31:10–31 (ESV) 10 An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. This wise mom is creating a challenge for her son. She knows something about male psychology. Men love a challenge, and men love competition. They prefer the elusive, the rare, the valuable. The wise mother of Lemuel peeks his interest in her description of her preferred daughter in law by talking about her rarity. 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. One of the great needs in a man’s life is certainty. Lemuel’s mom is saying - you can trust this woman. Notice also the scope of her, “doing good” to her husband - all the days of her life. That means as a high school student, before she ever meets her husband - she is doing him good. How? Perhaps she prays for him, perhaps she prepares for him, and no doubt she stays pure for him. 13 She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. 14 She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. 15 She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. Do you see what that is saying... notice she has maidens... that is she has employees. Now the maidens are supposed to rise while it’s still dark and feed her. But she’s taking care of them. If your concept of a Godly Woman is an uneducated, un-engaged woman, staying home barefoot and pregnant, cleaning house all day - YOU NEED TO READ PROVERBS. This woman has a staff. This woman generates a profit. Notice she’s also engaged in real estate and a winery… 16 She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. This woman knows the real estate market, she’s able to discern when to buy and when to sell. She’s an “IMPROVER” she buys a field - the field becomes more fruitful. No doubt she adds value to her friends, her employees, her family as well. One of the ways you know you’ve found this sort of woman - look around her. Things around her are getting better. An excellent woman is like an antidote against the perpetual decline of things in this sin cursed world. 17 She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. This woman is marked by confidence and strength. She is a strong lady both internally and externally. 18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. This is not to say that she never sleeps, although it may seem that way for many of your women. This is a Hebrew quoloquialism that means in effect, “The sun never sets on her work”. If I said, “the sun never sets on the ministry of FBC... I am saying, we have work all around the world... even while you sleep, your dollars are funding ministry. This woman’s life is that way. She’s making a difference not just in her family, but beyond her family to the world. She’s not only working hard, she’s working smart. 19 She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. She is personally engaged in the production of her enterprise. She oversees from the 30,000 ft level and the 3ft level. She’s working. 20 She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. This woman realizes that God has blessed her, but she is not blessed simply to enjoy life - but she is blessed to be a blessing. She is engaged in philanthropy. She’s working to help those less fortunate than herself. 21 She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet. 22 She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. This speaks of the fact that she knows that the needs of household are met even when Murphy comes to visit. Murphys law - anything that can go wrong will go wrong. But she knows that her family is safe, because she has planned ahead. 23 Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land. Now this verse has a couple of implications. This woman didn’t settle for just any old man. She married a true Godly leader. Her man is known in the gates. But another way to look at it is this - because of HER influence, the husband has grown, he’s changed, he’s arisen as a leader over time. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant. She delivers sashes to the merchants, not to the buyer… think of it - she is at the Wholesale level of the fashion industry. When I read this I thought of Sara Blakely, the Founder and Inventor of Spanx was born in Clearwater, FL. She became the first female billionaire to join the Gates-Buffett Giving Pledge and the youngest woman in the world to earn 1 billion dollars on her own. 25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. One commentator said, “If honor be your clothing, the suit will last a lifetime; but if clothing be your honor, it will soon be worn threadbare” Notice also, she laughs at the future - she is not given over to worry and fret. She confidently looks at tomorrow and laughs… not smiles… laughs….that is the essence of confidence. 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. This woman isn’t an accident - she understands how her decisions have led to a favorable outcome and she is willing to share her information. She teaches others. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. She is a household executive. Now remember, she has servants. But she doesn’t delegate everything to others, she is hands on. 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” 30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Notice that the fear of God is NOT a deficit that hinders her from accomplishment. Rather, it is the source of the strength that allows her to go further and accomplish more. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates. THIS WOMAN: Is not foolish - she sees the big picture and proceeds accordingly. She doesn’t have time to be boisterous. She’s experienced too much to be naive. She would she be contentious? She and her husband are both working in the same direction. Some of you read this chapter and find it very discouraging. Perhaps you feel that you are so far from the mark that she sets. Perhaps you messed up, you’ve sinned, perhaps you made some huge mistakes. Well let me tell you something that might encourage you. The best scholarship suggests that Lemuel referenced in this passage is actually the mother’s pet name for Solomon. If that’s true and she is Solomon’s mother… what do we know about Solomon’s mom? Her name was Bathsheba.

Today is October 11th, 2017 and our guests this week are: Mike Shuster from the great war project blog, Allison S. Finkelstein (STEEN) and Zack Wilske from the USCIS History Office and Library Andrew Capets from the 100 Cities / 100 Memorials project in Trafford, Pennsylvania Rex Passion, author of the WW1 book and now website - The Lost Sketchbooks And Jerry Michaud Executive Director of the Roll of Honor Foundation WW1 Centennial News is brought to you by the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission and the Pritzker Military Museum and Library. I’m Theo Mayer - the Chief Technologist for the Commission and your host. Welcome to the show. Our theme this week is going to focus on the youth of America - how young people were folded into the war effort THEN - 100 years ago and we also want to tell you more about our current education initiatives about ‘The War That Changed The World” today in our WW1 Centennial News NOW section. In an article "WWI: Support from the home front” written by Richard Zuber - a North Carolinian historian, Zuber helps to frame the issue: When most people hear the word war they think of soldiers and sailors, guns and battles, death and destruction. Those are all part of war, but historians also study everything and everyone affected by conflicts. This is especially true of what military historians call a “total war”. In discussing how women and even the elderly aided in the total war effort in 1917, Zuber notes: Children worked just as hard as the adults and contributed a great deal. Boy Scouts participated in patriotic rallies and the Liberty Loan drives. The Woodcraft Girls distributed food pledge cards and enrolled as “Potatriots” entering a competition for growing the largest potato crop. The Camp Fire Girls baby-sat for women working in war plants and helped the Red Cross roll bandages and make dressings for wounds. Girl Scouts were involved in all those activities and sold war bonds, made scrapbooks for hospitals, and wrapped Christmas packages for soldiers. With that as a setup, let’s jump into the wayback machine to see what was happening for America’s youth and education 100 years ago this week. World War One THEN 100 Year Ago This Week [MUSIC TRANSITION] Welcome to 1917 It’s the second week of October and the Wilson administration - offers several articles this week in it’s Official Bulletin - about education and teaching patriotism to the youth of America. [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline October 9, 1917 Headline: Influence of the War on Teaching History! The article tries to frame America’s entry into the war in terms that teachers might impart. In the article - which is speaking to the teachers - the US Bureau of Educations states: The Nation has finally been drawn into the great War - a war that demands for its successful prosecution not only efficient and courageous service in the Army and Navy but also the loyal cooperation of millions of men and women who are not enrolled in the fighting forces nor directly responsible for the civil administration on which these forces depend. Interestingly - the article goes on the frame the fight as being between free and democratic societies and hereditary monarchies. Quote: We have as clear an interest in international law as individuals have in the laws of society. That was said long before the steam ship, the submarine. and the wireless had broken down our ‘splendid isolation.” No one can take an intelligent part in a great conflict for the safety of democracy -- unless they are really interested in -- and know something about -- nations other than their own—about the difference between a republican government like our own or that of France or the scarcely less democratic constitution of Great Britain on the one side, and, in sharp contrast to all of these, a strongly monarchical government like that of the German Empire, in which the most important measures affecting the national welfare may be practically determined by a single hereditary sovereign or a small group of such sovereigns. In the article there is no reference to the growing socialism in europe and Russia, nor of the powerful dictatorships that would be so prominent in the next generation. [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline Oct 13, 1917 Headline: Lesson leaflets on patriotism intended for permanent course in public schools The story reads The plan for Educational Administrators Is to Educate a Rising Generation How to Conduct the Business of Living A Wide Variety of Topics Treated in Pamphlets Prepared to Suit Pupils of the Various Grades Will Be Supplied. The article goes on to read In order to bring the lessons of patriotism and of national and international relations within the comprehension of children, the instruction in conservation which is to be given in American schools this year at the insistence of President Wilson will begin with and emphasize home and local problems. A series of lesson leaflets will be issued monthly by the Food Administration and the Bureau of Education throughout the present school year. The plan is to educate a rising generation that will know better than its predecessors how to conduct the business of living. Now - This “theme” for lessons about the “business of living” comes up a number of times, but is not elaborated on - leaving one to wonder what the Wilson Administration meant. However a panoply of headlines do reveal a theme that the government is thinking about the Nations youth and their role in the war effort. Here is a whole bunch of them: On October 2nd: “American school children to be given lessons in community and natural life” in democracy” requested by president” On October 6th: “Leaflets as guides to school teachers sent by us commissions to teach children democracy's meaning” On October 10th: Work of american boy scouts commended in promoting sale of liberty loan bonds And in earlier months: “President appeals to school children of nation to enroll in red cross service” “War topics at high school commencements recommended by commissioner claxton” may 28 “School Bells to ring out call for liberty loan subscriptions” june11 “Schools with shopwork depts urged to continue during summer to train skilled mechanics and high grade helpers” july 27 And finally “Program of school activity during the war suggested to educational institutions” july 7 So as Richard Zuber points out at the top of the section - WW1 is very much a part of daily life in America - for the men called to service, for the mothers, wives and daughters and even for the children of the nation. It is not some remote and distant foreign policy, everyone is in the fight - in some way - the entire citizenry - and non-citizens alike - as we will discuss a bit later in the show. [SOUND EFFECT] Great War Project From the Great War Project Blog - we are joined by Mike shuster, former NPR correspondent and curator for the Great War project. Mike is going to tell us about the collapsing eastern front as Russia stalls and Germany develops a new naval and Storm Trooper prowess in their baltic sea offensive. Welcome Mike! [Mike Shuster] Thank you Mike. That was Mike Shuster from the Great War Project blog. Although through all of WWI, America never produced or or fielded a single American fighter plane, we did manufacture a bunch of them - and this week 100 years ago, the US Army Air Service put in an order for thousands of British designed DeHavilland DH-4 planes. The version they ordered were to be delivered with the US made American Liberty 12 cylinder engine - rather than the Rolls Royce engine of the British version. It was slow going at first, but in the end, the Dayton Wright company delivered over 3,100 of them, General Motors 1,600 of them and Standard Aircraft corporation another 160. And it all started 100 years ago this week in the war in the sky. You can follow the War in The sky by checking with our comprehensive timeline, curated by former fighter pilot, air force general and author RG head. New episodes for this week include: Sabotage in the Desert Then - Indy Nydel takes viewers’ questions in a “Out of the Trenches” segment which is always popular with their regular viewers - this time: Electricity, the Wright Brothers and Hip Firing MGs -- And finally an episode called Evolution of British Battle Tanks in WW1 Follow the link in the podcast notes or search for “the great war” on youtube. Link: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheGreatWar World War One NOW [SOUND EFFECT] We have moved forward in time to the present… Welcome to WW1 Centennial News NOW - This part of the program is not about history but how the centennial of the War that changed the world is being commemorated today. Commission News In this week’s in Commission news, a follow up on the US Mint’s unveiling of the 2018 WWI Centennial Silver Dollar. The unveiling happened on October 9 and was hosted by the Acting Secretary of the U.S. Army, Ryan McCarthy, during A-USA meeting in Washington DC also known as the National Meeting of the Association of the U.S. Army. This was followed up on October 10 with the unveiling of the designs for five silver medals that will be issued in conjunction with the Centennial Silver Dollar. Each medal, composed of 90 percent silver, pays homage to branches of the U.S. Armed Forces that were active in World War I. We set up a website at ww1cc.org/coin where you’ll find press releases with detail information, the presentations and bios of the speakers, lots of links and images. The coins and medals will be available in early 1918. Follow the links in the podcast notes for more information. This week’s Word for Speaking WWI comes from working in close quarters with Urdu speaking soldiers from the British Colonial forces. In Urdu kusi means pleasure or convenience and in WWI the word spread amongst soldiers in the trenches transforming as these words always do into a word that means “easy” or “comfortable” - Cushie! And you thought that word came from Cushion… Nawww - Cushion came from latin for hip or thigh... In WWI the troops also used Cushie to describe a wound which was non-fatal but could potentially get them sent home or, at the least, away from the front line. In 1915 an english physician wrote: “When you are in the trenches a cushy wound... seems the most desirable thing in the world.” Cushy, this week’s speaking WW1 word - “A most desirable way to get hit during the war”. We have now published over 3,200 articles - If you read one article a day it would take you 8 years and 9 months to read the whole site as it sits now. Anna Coleman Ladd A new article this week under WW1cc.org/news, is about Anna Coleman Ladd and her unusual work with WW1 veterans. Ladd was an American sculptor who studied sculpture in Paris and Rome before WWI. After the war broke out, she devoted her time to giving soldiers, whose faces were disfigured by gas, or explosives, or other wounds - artistic prosthetic masks. Cosmetic surgery as we know it today did not exist - but there was relief from disfigurement - See the article featuring before and after photographs that show how WWI soldiers’ horrific facial injuries were surgically repaired, then covered with the sculpted prosthetics that Ladd developed. Follow the link in the podcast notes. These words come from Thomas Croft Neibaur NIGH-BOWER, the first Mormon to receive the Medal of Honor during WWI - for his heroism during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. This is know as one of the bloodiest battles in American military history. Writer Benjamin Sonnenberg returns to the WWrite blog this week with another riveting short story, inspired by Neibaur's letters home. Delve into Neibaur's legendary experience in WWI with this captivating, well-researched, fictional narrative by visiting ww1cc.org/wwrite Link: www.ww1cc.org.wwrite http://www.worldwar1centennial.org/index.php/articles-posts/3214-a-pretty-tame-one-thomas-croft-neibaur.html The Buzz - WW1 in Social Media Posts That brings us to the buzz - the centennial of WW1 this week in social media with Katherine Akey - Katherine - You have a couple of stories to share with us today! Thanks Theo! Souvernir AEF En Haute Marne Last week we mentioned the rededication of new sculptures of General Pershing and Lafayette in Versaille. The ceremony went very smoothly and now the statues are in their rightful places overlooking the Avenue Des Etats Unis. If you want to see images of the ceremony and the statues, you should check out the facebook page for the Souvenir AEF En Haute Marne, a French-based page commemorating the American Expeditionary Force’s time in the Haute Marne region of France. Keaton served with the 40th infantry division, and carried his sense of humor and mischievousness with him throughout his service. A little anecdote to close us out: While with his battalion in Camp Upton, Buster observed how the officers, who were allowed to come and go in and out of camp, dressed in just their uniform shirts and ties and saluted the sentries. Buster took off his tunic, hopped into the back of his girlfriend's Packard roadster, and drove past the military police, giving that lazy salute that had them convinced he was like any other officer. He returned that night after a fabulous dinner with his girl and the next day the unit left for France. Learn more at the link in the podcast notes. LINK: http://greatwarproject.org/2017/10/09/russia-collapsing-on-land-and-sea/ [SOUND EFFECT] War in the Sky This week in the Great War in the sky, America begins to mass produce a two seater bomber! Find it and view many images and articles from the ceremony at Versaille by following the link in the podcast notes. link:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004218645049&hc_ref=ARRl4MJwZFrnBS67Gn1YtMKpIJvb0xpP3abmRdPkTvN0hXYBWJr7El9Q2h4-XEUp0X0 Buster Keaton Finally this week, we’ll close out by celebrating Buster Keaton, whose birthday was celebrated last week and commemorated by the National WW1 museum and Memorial with a little video clip and a story. Hey there Weight Loss Nation, Today, we take a good look at - The Forbidden Food – Black Rice Black Rice is also called “Forbidden Rice” or “Emperor’s Rice.” In Ancient times, Black Rice was “reserved” for the Emperors of China and used as a “Tribute” food. As a matter of fact…….Anyone caught stealing even a “handful” of the sacred Black Rice, would be put to death! “Black Rice” was rare in Ancient China and it’s origin was unclear until recently. In a study published by “The Plant Cell,” in September of 2015, Researchers from two institutions in Japan collaborated to examine the genetic basis for the black color in rice grains. They discovered that the trait was due to a rearrangement in a plant gene, which activates the production of “Anthocyanins.” I hope you recall that I spoke about “Anthocyanins” on last week’s episode on “Raspberries,” on Concoction Friday. “Anthocyanins” are what give fruit it’s color. Red Raspberries, Black Berries, Red Rice and…..Black Rice! The researchers concluded that this rearrangement of the gene must have originally happened in the tropical “japonica” subspecies of rice, (meaning it happened in or around Japan) and that the black rice trait was then transferred into other varieties (including those found today) by crossbreeding. Dr. Zhimin Xu, Associate Professor at the Dept. of Food Science at Louisiana State Univ. Agricultural Center…. Who reported on the research presented at the 240th National Meeting of the (AMS) American Chemical Society said….. “Just a spoonful of black rice bran contains more health promoting anthocyanin antioxidants than are found in a spoonful of blueberries, but with less sugar and more fiber and vitamin E antioxidants.” Wow! That’s a powerful grain!!! Black Rice is the variety of rice with the most powerful disease fighting “anti-oxixants,” as well as a great source of FIBER. Black Rice contains “anti-inflammatory” properties which has the ability to…… “Search, Fight & Destroy” “Free Radical Cells” that cause Cancer……making it part of our “Pac Man” family! That’s right Nation…….Black Rice is part of our “Pac Man” family. Searching for “Free Radical Cells” “bacteria” and “Viruses” that are invading the cells in YOUR Body! The outermost layer of black rice…. Called “the hull,” is where most of the nutrients are found. White rice is “milled,” where the “hull” “bran” and “germ” is removed to expose just the rice. After that…..the white rice goes through a process where it is “polished”…… to make the rice look bright, white and shiny. Removing the hull of the rice and then “polishing” it removes much of the nutrients and flavor of the rice. How does it compare to “black rice”? I’ll tell you……… A 6oz serving of “White Rice” contains: 220 calories, 6.8 gms protein, 1.2 gms of iron and 0.6 grams of fiber. “Black Rice” contains: 200 calories, 8.5 gms of protein, 3.5 gms of iron, 4.9 gms of fiber, and the highest amount of antioxidants of any rice variety. Study after study has found that eating whole grain varieties with high fiber content, protect against obesity, heart disease diabetes and digestive issues. Fiber binds waste and toxins within your colon, which helps to regulate bowel function – reducing or eliminating constipation and diarrhea. How do you Prepare Black Rice? Very similar to how you cook other whole grains. Calculate ratios: 1 cup rice should cook in 1 1/2 cups water; scale up or down as needed. Don’t rinse: The outer layer has antioxidants, which may help lower cholesterol, help your immune system and help with brain functions. Go heavy: A thick-bottomed pot prevents scorching. Simmer slowly: After coming to a boil, the rice should simmer, covered, until it absorbs the water (anywhere from 25-35 minutes). Steam to finish: Keep the rice covered, off heat, for 10 minutes after cooking. Today's Recipe I have chosen for you is: Black Rice with Broccoli & Almonds Makes 4 Servings about 300 calories each serving. Ingredients: 1 cup black rice 1 pound broccoli, cut into small florets 3 cloves garlic, unpeeled 4 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon coarse salt Freshly ground pepper 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (or Brown Mustard) 2 tablespoons red-wine vinegar 1/3 cup sliced almonds, toasted 1 cup lightly packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves 2 scallions, thinly sliced Directions 1. In a heavy-bottomed medium pot, bring rice and 1 1/2 cups water to a boil. Reduce heat to maintain a simmer, cover, and cook until rice is tender and water is absorbed, about 25 - 35 minutes, depending on your stove top. Remove from heat; let stand 10 minutes. Transfer to a serving bowl. Let cool slightly. 2. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. On a rimmed baking sheet, toss broccoli and garlic with 2 tablespoons oil. Season with 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper. Roast, stirring once, until tender, about 20 minutes. Remove and reserve garlic; transfer broccoli to bowl with rice. 3. Remove garlic from skins. Place in a small bowl; mash. Whisk in mustard, vinegar, remaining 2 tablespoons oil, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Drizzle over salad. Add almonds, parsley, and scallions; toss. Season with remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper. Serve and Enjoy!

Featured music: Joyous Celebration, by Don Owens. Chunky Monkey, by Don Owens. Dan Moore and I were lucky have Dan's mentor, Don Owens (D.O.) come out and work our band in rehearsal. Of course, we couldn't let D.O. leave without sitting down and recording a podcast about his time in Texas and working at Evanston Township High School and Northwestern University in Illinois. Enjoy listening to some great band history and teaching tips for band directors everywhere. Don Owens, Coordinator Emeritus of the Jazz Studies and Pedagogy Program, Director Emeritus, Contemporary Music Ensemble, and the National High School Music Institute at Northwestern University, began his tenure at Beinen School of Music in 1979. Before coming to Northwestern, he taught for twelve years at Evanston (Illinois) Township High School where his duties included directing band, brass ensembles, and jazz band, as well as teaching classes in music theory, popular music, free improvisation, and composition. He created the Electronic Music Studio at ETHS in 1971. Owens received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from North Texas State University, where he studied Composition and Jazz. His Master of Musical Arts degree is from the University of Illinois, where he majored in Composition. He studied composition with Morgan Powell, Merrill Ellis, Samuel Adler, and Salvatore Martirano. He has won several grants and awards, and is regularly commissioned for new works. In his first few years at Northwestern, Mr. Owens conducted the nationally renowned Jazz Ensemble, directed the "Wildcat” Marching Band and Symphonic Band, and taught advanced Method classes for undergraduate Music Education Majors. He eventually was appointed Coordinator of the Jazz Studies and Pedagogy Program, teaching courses in Jazz Writing, Seminar in Jazz Pedagogy, Jazz in the Public Schools, and conducted the Jazz Ensemble. Under his leadership, the Northwestern Jazz Program grew to offer the B.M. in Jazz Studies and the M.M. in Jazz Pedagogy. In addition to Owens' responsibilities in the Jazz area, he served as Director and Primary Conductor of the internationally acclaimed Northwestern University Contemporary Music Ensemble for over 20 years. This group performed over 200 world premiers, as well as the standard 20th century repertory. In 1991, the Northwestern CME served as the primary chamber music ensemble for the John Cage Now World Festival. In the spring of 1995, the CME served as one of two visiting Artist Ensembles for the National Meeting of the Society of Composers at the University of Iowa. In 2002, the CME played a major role in the Stephan Wolpe Festival, sponsored by the School of Music. During the summers, Owens served as Director of the National High School Music Institute, from 1991 to 2004. Under his leadership, the enrollment increased by 100%. With a curriculum that required the attending students to declare a Major - Classical Guitar, Composition, Jazz Studies, Music Education, Piano, Strings, Voice, or Winds and Percussion- NHSMI consistently attracted students from all 50 states, as well as many foreign countries.

Scientists are reporting development of a “smart” roof coating, made from waste cooking oil from fast food restaurants, that can “read” a thermometer and help save energy. Roofs coated with the material would reflect scorching summer sunlight and reduce sticker-shock air-conditioning bills. When chilly weather sets in, the coating would change roles and transmit heat to help warm the interior. Scientists described the sustainable material at the 239th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco. Intro theme and music by Kevin MacLeod.
