Friends of the Rosary: Today, we commemorate Our Lady of Czestochowa, also known as the Black Madonna. It's traditionally believed that this icon was painted by St. Luke the Evangelist on a cypress wood panel from a table used by the Holy Family in Nazareth. The painting was discovered by St. Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine. The icon was then enshrined in the imperial city of Constantinople, where it remained for the next 500 years. Brought to Czestochowa, in Poland in the fourteenth century, the holy image is associated with several miraculous events. Among them is the liberation of Poland from Communist rule. Pope John Paul II visited the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa four times during his pontificate. Today, the Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa attracts millions who love and honor Our Lady's intercession. The holy painting enshrined at Czestochowa has been a lighthouse of hope during centuries of hardship and defeat. It is known as the “Black Madonna” because of the soot residue that discolors the painting. The soot is the result of centuries of votive lights and candles burning in front of the painting. Also, today is the commemoration of Our Lady Health of the Sick, celebrated on the Saturday before the last Sunday of August. This is one of the titles in the Litany to Our Lady of Loretto, and there is also a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Health of the Sick, La Salud, in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, in Mexico. Angela Beloian is an artist and educator living near Boulder, Colorado. Her work reflects a strong connection to her garden where she spends hours observing plants, insects and animals. She is fascinated by what makes life unique, how it evolves, and most importantly, what ties us together. Beloian has exhibited at the Fort Collins Museum of Art, Riverside Art Museum, Longmont Art Museum, Denver International Airport, Lawndale Art Center, the Houston Art League and other institutions. She has completed over 20 solo exhibitions and was honored as a Colorado Creative by Westword magazine. Her work was featured on the cover of Studio Visit Magazine and has been reviewed in publications including Art Ltd and Westword where she received a Best of Denver Award. She has received grants from the Longmont Council for the Arts, the Scientific Cultural Facilities District and Art in Public Places in both Longmont and Boulder, CO. She was invited to attend the Painting's Edge Artist Residency in Idyllwild, CA and the Creative Capital Artist Retreat in Houston, TX. From 2007-2020, she headed the art program at September School in Boulder, CO where she created and facilitated the Visiting Artist Program as well as led school-wide art-focused trips to Denver, Chicago, Santa Fe and Patzcuaro, Mexico. She has served on the Teacher Advisory Committee for the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Visual Arts Committee for the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder. In 2012 she co-created and facilitated the Boulder County Arts Leadership Forum (BCALF.) Collections include the City of Longmont, St Anthony Medical Center and Children's Hospital of Denver. The Purepecha or Tarascans (endonym Western Highland Purepecha: P'urhepecha [pʰuˈɽepet͡ʃa]) are a group of indigenous people centered in the northwestern region of Michoacán, Mexico, mainly in the area of the cities of Cheran and Patzcuaro. They are also known by the pejorative "Tarascan", an exonym, applied by outsiders and not one they use for themselves. The Purepecha occupied most of Michoacán but also some of the lower valleys of both Guanajuato and Jalisco. Celaya, Acambaro, Cerano, and Yurirapundaro. Now, the Purepecha live mostly in the highlands of central Michoacán, around Lakes Patzcuaro and Cuitzeo. The Purépecha language is spoken by nearly 200,000 people in Michoacán. Since Mexico's 2000 indigenous language law, indigenous languages like Purépecha were granted official status equal with Spanish in the areas in which they are spoken. Recently, educational instruction in Purépecha has been introduced in the local school systems. Mexicans just recently celebrated El Día de Los Muertos on November 1st and 2nd. This is a very important celebration in Mexico and reflects the vibrant indigenous heritage of Latin America. With my mother growing up in Michoacán, a state with some of the most colorful Día de Los Muertos celebrations, I've grown up visiting the cultural heart of the celebration. The Sisters of Immaculate Health rarely venture out of their monastery in the central Mexican town of Patzcuaro. Yet they have become the most adept and successful breeders of their local species of this aquatic salamander. Scientists marvel at their axolotl-breeding talents and are now working with them to save the animal from extinction. BBC News science correspondent Victoria Gill is allowed into the convent to discover at least some of the nun's secrets. A convent of Mexican nuns is helping to save the one of the world's most endangered and most remarkable amphibians: the axolotl, a truly bizarre creature of serious scientific interest worldwide and an animal of deep-rooted cultural significance in Mexico. The Sisters of Immaculate Health rarely venture out of their monastery in the central Mexican town of Patzcuaro. Yet they have become the most adept and successful breeders of their local species of this aquatic salamander. Scientists marvel at their axolotl-breeding talents and are now working with them to save the animal from extinction. BBC News science correspondent Victoria Gill is allowed into the convent to discover at least some of the nun's secrets and explores why axolotls are a group of salamanders so important to protect from evolutionary oblivion. Axolotls are able to regrow lost limbs and other body parts. As a result, the aquatic salamanders are of great interest to researchers worldwide who study them in the hope of imitating the trick: to grow tissues and organs for medicine. The nuns also began to breed and rear their axolotls for medical reasons. They use the salamander as the key ingredient in an ancient Mexican remedy for coughs and other respiratory illnesses. The Sisters of Immaculate Health sell the medicinal syrup to the public. As well as being the basis for a popular folk remedy all over Mexico, the axolotl is also the manifestation of one of the ancient Aztecs' most important gods. The big problem is that all species of axolotl are critically endangered. The nun's species is known locally as the achoque. It only lives in nearby Lake Patzcuaro and it has been pushed to the edge of extinction because of pollution and introduced fish species. This is why the sisters began to breed the animals in the convent about 30 years ago. They were advised to do this by a friar who was also a trained biologist because the supply of achoques from Lake Patzcuaro's fishermen diminished. In the 1980s, 20 tonnes of axolotls were fished from the lake every year. Today they are very few left in the wild. Biologists from the nearby Michoacan University discovered that the nuns are expert breeders of the species and have started to collaborate with them in a conservation programme to make the Lake Patzcuaro an axolotl-friendly habitat once more and (if necessary) to introduce convent-bred animals to restore the lake's tiny population. The project is being supported and funded by the UK's Chester Zoo. The zoo's curator of amphibians Dr Gerardo Garcia visits the convent with Victoria, and demonstrates some of the technical help being offered to the nuns. For example, he micro-chips and takes DNA samples from the nun's breeding salamanders so the sisters can refine their breeding success even further. Producer: Andrew Luck-Baker.
