In this episode, Maxima Simons, founder of women's network Wumanas, aviation pioneer, mother and good friend of the show, joins Sergio Isauro to share her experience of living in a world where archaic attitudes and behaviours towards gender and sexuality continue to dictate many areas — from politics to education to the day-to-day workplace. Is genuine change happening to redistribute power and create greater equality for minority groups? In this episode, Sergio Isauro engages in conversation with Mendel Skulski, a storyteller with the podcast Future Ecologies: a show produced on (and often about) unceded Indigenous territories across the Salish Sea, located in the Canadian province of British Columbia and the U.S. state of Washington. Trained in Industrial Design, and steeped in reverence for nature's infinite, entangled beauty, Mendel opted to devote themself to a less material form of production — that of sounds and ideas. They apply a musical ethos to narrative composition, using soundscape as an indispensable layer of communication. Thematically, they seek to illuminate the assumptions that shape our ecosocial relationships, so that we may each discover other ways of being a part of the natural world. Besides the podcast, they work as a mushroom guide — introducing the public to the diversity and ecology of local fungi. Their other loves include bikes, fruit, and dancing. This sound journey, composed and recorded by Michael Alfred Wagner [Biomigrant] traces movements through time and place during two days of an artist residency in Espacio Pilam, in the green hills of Xico, Veracruz. We first hear the echoing town bell from high above in the hills, as diverse choruses of birds accompany the setting sun and mix with distant cowbells, before descending to the Pilam house clearing, nestled into the slope above a canyon, where the powerful voices of bugs take us through the night and into the next morning. Then, down in the canyon, we trace the river back against its current as it gurgles through boulders, until finally we stand under the powerful roar of two waterfalls. Our "Sound Journey" Series intends to explore the multitude of realities and experiences of what it is to be a human walking the earth. Every story and soundscape is meant to inspire and feed our curiosity, helping us observe our inner self in relation to what surrounds us.
