There is a gap that exists in women's healthcare, particularly for women in the postpartum period, and there remains a lack of reliable, credible resources. Dr. Pinkey Patel is trying to change this by creating an inclusive, informative and supportive community designed to help mothers and babies thrive. In today's episode we talk to Dr. Patel about the importance of exercise after birth, honoring your recovery, and how her passion for the pelvic floor led her to starting The Snap Back. Dr. Pinkey Patel is a clinical pharmacist who is also a certified NASM personal trainer, specializing in pre/post natal corrective exercise. Dr. Patel first hand experienced the gap in women's healthcare and the lack of reliable, credible resources. From learning how to establish a business from scratch in 2019 to developing a consultancy, and building out an app, Dr. Patel has previously juggled working full-time as a pharmacist, being a mother of two, being pregnant and successfully bringing a product to market. She is now full time at her startup as she is excited to continue impacting new mothers. When you're doing something as visceral and life altering as growing a human, the resources you receive during and after should reflect that magnitude, they should be as thoroughly developed and as seriously considered as the life we create. She believes that by supporting the pillars of society during one of the most challenging times, further creates a thriving society. We also talk about:The misconceptions about exercise after birthHow the pelvic floor is impacted by different birthing options Why there is such a lack of knowledge and postpartum support for women The knowledge she wishes all women knew about the postpartum periodPinkey's own motherhood story and how it fueled her passion today How her company, The Snap Back, can help moms Pinkey's Resources:IG @myrihealthJoin our Kula village:Join the Kula waitlistFind us on IG: @hello.kulaAre you an expert? Dr. Pinkey Patel says that she realized women everywhere lacked the resources and support required t alleviate stress and be well informed as their bodies and lives rapidly change. She believes there are opportunities to improve your birthing and post partum experience. So, she created The Snap Back Mehodology. In this episode we are diving in to what she has created, why she birthed this dream and how it's changing the game for women all over the world! You can connect with Dr. Patel here:Website: https://thesnapback.comIG: https://www.instagram.com/fitpinkrx/App Store: The Snap Back App
Dr. Pinkey Patel grew up helping her parents run motels. Her mother and father had come to the United States with no education and no money and were determined Pinkey would eventually go to college. Pinkey was an excellent student, especially in math and science, so although she would have to pay her own way, she was in agreement with her parents that college was in her future. As her high school class valedictorian, she was well prepared to gather scholarships to help pay her college expenses. Interested in studying some area of healthcare, she chose pharmacy to be her major. She went directly from undergraduate school to her Pharm.D degree, finishing in 6 1/2 years by 2011. As she scouted for scholarship opportunities throughout that time, Pinkey looked to the Miss America Pageant system as a scholarship source. On a second try she won a regional level pageant. In order to advance to the state competition, among other things, she was required to work with a fitness trainer. It was at this point that Pinkey was introduced to both fitness training and body building, interests that would influence and steer her career for the future. Through the pageant experience, she became very interested in muscle mechanics and physiology. She decided that she was more than just an enthusiast, so she eventually gained certification as a personal trainer through the National Society of Sports Medicine. She taught fitness classes during both her graduate and undergrad years, and after her marriage, she participated in a couple of body building competitions. Her education coupled with her fitness avocation came together to form the foundation for her career pivot. In order to keep her fitness certification, Pinkey enrolled annually for continuing education classes. She decided to put her focus on pre and post-natal fitness. Though she had no children of her own yet, she was listening to the concerns of other women as they talked about a myriad of health and fitness problems they experienced before and after they gave birth. She began to investigate some of the fallacies that traditionally drove fitness and health care in this period of women's lives. Her investigation finally culminated in The Snapback, an all-inclusive and intuitive postpartum app, but it didn't happen overnight. Her first move in the app's eventual creation was to launch a like-minded community in 2018. She interacted with other women on topics of concern they brought up like bladder control, breast feeding, etc. This community convinced her she definitely had found an audience in need of sound, factual information, and it reassured her that an app to address their many needs would be extremely useful. In this interview, you will hear her detail some of the creative features she's developed for her app to address the vast variety of questions new mothers have. In September of 2019, she launched The Snapback in 166 countries. Her app has grown sufficiently that in April of 2021, she gave up her full time clinical pharmacy position to oversee her growing online presence. She continues to do one-on-one consulting though in order to stay close to the market she serves. Amy broaches the question of motivation. She asks Pinkey what drives her and makes her so passionate about her new work. Pinkey responds by saying that leaving her pharmacy position was the hardest thing she has ever had to do. She had focused all her early years on building that stable career and walking away from it was a big risk to take. But she says she had seen too often unqualified people badly advising vulnerable, exhausted new mothers. She knew she had the knowledge and tools to do better for them. Pinkey also tells us about her continued search for funding now and how The Snapback is currently operating financially. She confesses what a big learning curve she is grappling with when it comes to business practices. She's often engaged in on the job training. The pandemic made it even harder to learn, but now as things open up, she's able to take advantage of the more available resources for learning. She points out that less than 3% of women receive venture capital funding, but she is working hard to be included in that statistic. Takeaways: Don't be in a rush. Give yourself ample time to think about your options Patience is very necessary. Your big idea won't come to fruition overnight. Be prepared to have some failures but keep tweaking You can balance your side hustle(s) with your new venture, but know at some point if you're successful, you're going to have to go all in It's important to identify and build your values into your enterprise from the beginning Build your business culture from the ground up. TWD is joined by Dr. Pinkey Patel, a PharmD, fitness instructor, mama of 2, and startup founder of The Snapback, an app designed to aid womxn from prepregnancy to postpartum, and from mental to physical health. Postpartum depression, in particular, is an underreported, underdiagnosed, and unfortunately accepted part of motherhood in South Asian communities. During the most momentous transformation in a person's life, healthcare systems need to be designed to support mothers fully and, hopefully, the conversation on this week's episode will help in the process of opening up and normalizing seeking help through new motherhood.

In this episode, we have as a guest, Pinkey Patel, PharmD, who is a clinical pharmacist and personal trainer that specializes in pre/postnatal corrective exercise. As the CEO/founder of @thesnapback_, she is passionate about bridging the gap in women's maternal healthcare globally by making pregnancy and postpartum resources accessible, easy-to-understand and helpful in teaching women to advocate for their health in the form of an app, consultancy, and blog! The SnapBack aims to provide women with a safe community, simple resources and evidence-based methods to implement and restore a sense of self, both physically and mentally. The average time between delivery and the first postpartum follow up visit is six weeks. After six weeks of sedentary living and physical-mental changes, most women are cleared to return to normal activity. Nine months of creating life and readjusting organs, cannot be solved effectively in one 30 minute appointment after six weeks. Women deserve better tools and guidance. Too often, she has seen new mamas returning to their pre-pregnancy workouts and unfortunately sustaining serious injury as they have not allowed their bodies to heal appropriately. From diastasis recti to leakage, there are significant body changes that first need to be addressed before embarking on a weight loss program. Employing the The Snapback methodology during and after the postpartum period will change the trajectory of how women view “fitness” during pregnancy. Her hope is to make simple, preventative and efficient Snapback techniques to revolutionize the way women recover. Society thrives when women thrive. She wants women to do more than Snapback. She wants them to become a stronger, more resilient version of themselves. When she's not playing mama to a 12 month baby boy, Arjun and three-year-old daughter, Karishma, you can find her pumping iron, trying to squeeze in a run or enjoying some good ole' tex mex, who can say no to chips and salsa? With a baby in one arm and a laptop in the other, she is on a mission to help mamas recover the right way! In this episode of Balance with Sam Podcast, I have a conversation with Oklahoma-native, Dr. Pinkey Patel. A badass mother of two, Pinkey is a trainer turned clinical pharmacist and CEO of Snapback, a personal training app that focuses on pre- and post-natal fitness and overall health. I invited her on the show to share her journey and explain the ways in which she works with her clients. Dr. Patel discusses the important principles of postpartum exercise, the physical challenges new mothers face after giving birth, and the general lack of understanding of this topic at large. She dispels the pressure and some of the internal lies that new mothers are often faced with and explains how she ultimately strives to create a non-judgemental community that supports one another. “At the end of the day, our goal is to survive. We’re all in this together.” - Pinkey Patel Top Takeaways: Pre- and post-natal exercise is a science unto itself. The way you apply movement to someone flooded with new hormones who is physically growing another human being is completely different from someone seeing a regular trainer. The first 6 weeks after having a baby is the one of hardest 6 weeks of a new mother’s life. Your body is completely different and is existing in a post-traumatic state. The medical system in the United States has poorly educated new mothers about all the new things they need to know immediately after having a baby in regards to self-care. Recognizing this was a global issue, Pinkey was inspired to launch her site, Snapback, as a full postpartum assistant. “Mom-shaming” is a real thing. The depression and anxiety that comes along with being a new mother is all too common. There is a pervasive sense of guilt and shame that comes along with it, especially in believing that other mothers have it all together while they don’t. In postpartum exercise, it’s important to use workouts that focus on the inside out, utilizing muscles that you can’t see, in order to help recover those parts of the body that was holding a baby for nine months. Everybody is different. Your physical and emotional goals as a new mother can be specific and unique to you, even if it’s wanting to get back to the body you had before the baby. It’s simply important to understand the science of your anatomy and feeling comfortable in being in a state of vulnerability as you work towards the new you. What it do?!?! On this episode of Not Rocket Science we dive into the latest Kanye weirdness involving meeting with Trump, biting six year old plane designs from Industrial Designer's college thesis, giving impromptu keynotes on top of desks about seemingly nothing, and how I'm basically done with tolerating the ridiculousness at this point. I also dive into the latest iteration of the Amazon Echo Screen, throw shade at Instagram testing tap-based navigation through profiles and a rundown of other noteworthy current events including justice finally being served to the abortion of a music festival known as Fyre Fest. Also, if you wanna follow us on Twitter and IG at @nrs_show that would just be super dope. And we will follow back!
