We're joined by Eiynah (@Nicemangos), host of the Polite Conversations podcast, to look back on the cursed mid-2010's, and in particular, the "Intellectual Dark Web". Coined by Bari Weiss in 2016, the IDW – a mix of aggrieved academics and podcasters, united mainly by their refusal to acknowledge pronouns – had been presented as the group best placed to explain the ascent of Donald Trump, only to collapse under its own contradictions, personal beefs, and of course, some of its members going completely off the rails with conspiracy theories. Eiynah explains the relationship between the 'IDW' and the New Atheism of the 2000s, how most of its remaining impulses are driven by Islamophobia, and why so many of its founding members have decided to become 'cultural Christians' now. Join us for part 2 of this Panel on wtf is going on in Germany. My German guests include Ilyas who is a German Muslim, Claus is a German who was raised with very right-wing views but has since shed them, and we also have John who has a Master's degree in German Studies and lived there as an exchange student. We discuss aspects of German identity, history, nationalism and the thinking behind some of the blind and bizarre support we see for Israel, the stifling of pro-Palestinian views - especially in the arts, the treatment of left leaning Jewish people who are critical of Israel, the Herero & Nama genocide, the ICJ, ex-muslims & ‘liberal' Muslims in Germany becoming tools of the right, & more. —— All guests on the Aftershow are Patrons of the Polite Conversations. *CW - discussion of sexual harassment and assault* In this episode I talked to Eiynah Nicemangos, host of the podcast Polite Conversations. Eiynah has been podcasting for a long time and does high quality work around the far right and the so-called intellectual dark web. Her series debunking and calling out Sam Harris for his bigotry is some of my favorite content covering Sam and the people like him. In this chat we talk about some stuff that happened adjacent to my old online community, the atheist community. There are some reactions to being called out that were truly shitty and there were some allegations of supposed progressive guys that came out a little while ago that exposed some hypocrisy among the men who claimed to be progressive. In some ways this may appear to be a drama episode but that isn't the intent. People with privilege have to be more aware of and more thoughtful about the ways they behave even when the consequences could be potentially harmful to them. The Heroes stood over the small man, who identified himself as a bishop. His face still pale from encountering the Jester, he carefully continued to look over the Heroes. It appeared as though he was still quite shaken up, and so the Swordsman Hero stepped forward to calm him down. He assured him that they were merely there to provide information and seek guidance. With this, the bishop seemed relieved. Color returned to his face and he appeared more at ease. He ushered the Heroes to a back room, and sat down behind a sturdy wooden desk. He offered a seat to the heroes, though there was only one open chair. The Heroes looked at each other, waiting to see who would make a move for the open seat. They eventually settled on allowing the Jester to sit down, as it would likely prove humorous. Thanks to God for making his appearance! While Daniel and Jack continue working towards resumption of IDSG, Jack is once again invited by best-friend-of-the-pod Eiynah (@nicemangos of the Polite Conversations podcast) to co-host a Twitter space [obligatory Elon Musk joke here] about the new Barbie movie and the tsunami of reactionary tears it has invoked. Conversation (with contributions from various guests) ranges over the movie itself and Barbie herself, Musk and X, Dutch politics, the culture wars, Ben Shapiro, Matt Walsh, Piers Morgan, and that weird guy on YouTube who dresses like a medieval knight. Obviously, this being an X space (sigh), sound quality is variable.

In this episode, we are joined by Eiynah Mohammed-Smith, an author, illustrator and the host of the Polite Conversations podcast. We talk about her time growing up in Saudi Arabia, her break with Islam, her involvement in New Atheism, and her subsequent disillusionment with that movement. Along the way, we talk about Sam Harris, ex-Muslims, hijabs, and more. We also ask Eiynah whether a “true atheist” can do things such as be spiritual or dislike Sam Harris. In the bonus section, available exclusively to supporters on Patreon, we ask Eiynah if she regrets her New Atheist phase and, most controversially, if she actually likes mangos.Polite Conversations: https://soundcloud.com/politeconversationsWoking Up Miniseries: https://soundcloud.com/politeconversations/sets/woking-up-miniseriesCheck out Eiynah's Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/nicemangosFollow Eiynah on Twitter: https://twitter.com/NiceMangosFollow Nathan on Twitter: https://twitter.com/NathGAlexanderNathan's website: https://www.nathangalexander.com/If you find the podcast valuable and want to support it, check out our Patreon page, where you will also find bonus content: https://www.patreon.com/beyond_atheism We are grateful for every contribution.

This is not to say that we are at war with all Muslims, but we are absolutely at war with the vision of life that is prescribed to all Muslims in the Koran. The only reason Muslim fundamentalism is a threat to us is because the fundamentals of Islam are a threat to us. Every American should read the Koran and discover the relentlessness with which non-Muslims are vilified in its pages. The idea that Islam is a “peaceful religion hijacked by extremists” is a dangerous fantasy — and it is now a particularly dangerous fantasy for Muslims to indulge. "It should be of particular concern to us that the beliefs of devout Muslims pose a special problem for nuclear deterrence. There is, after all, little possibility of our having a cold war with an Islamist regime armed with long-range nuclear weapons. A cold war requires that the parties be mutually deterred by the threat of death. Notions of martyrdom and jihad run roughshod over the logic that allowed the United States and the Soviet Union to pass half a century perched, more or less stably, on the brink of Armageddon. We must come to terms with the possibility that men who are every bit as zealous to die as the September 11 hijackers may one day get their hands on long-range nuclear weaponry. Sam Harris probably needs no introduction in our neck of the info-sphere as he is seemingly never far from the spotlight... or the occasional controversy. We've had some nice things to say about Sam, but we've also made some harsh criticisms, particularly regarding a short episode he released which seemed to suggest it was necessary to practice introspective meditation in order to fully understand why his political and culture war views were correct. Although we've never done a ‘proper' episode on Sam, we have always stated that anyone we discuss is welcome to come on the show and discuss (or dispute) our charges – which is exactly what Sam is doing here! This interview is split into two sections. In the first, we discuss Sam's app and whether it might encourage guru dynamics and the role of meditation and (non) self-awareness in forming an accurate political outlook. We put some of our criticisms to Sam especially regarding guru dynamics, issues of introspective verification of truth claims, and the potential for abusive practices and manipulation by gurus. In the second section, we turn to some of the more controversial topics that have sprung up around Sam over the years. Sam responds to proposals that he might be as tribal as the rest of us suckers, and he defends himself against accusations that he might have selective empathy and blind spots towards the rightish side of the political spectrum. We talk about tribalism and the potential distorting effects of personal relationships, as well as anthropologists, Islamism, wokism, right-wing extremism, and how political biases manifest themselves on the left and right. Although the format is an interview, it does get quite ‘debate-y' at times. And it's probably true that we don't come to a grand reconciliation of views at the end. However, nobody storms off, so what you get is a frank and friendly but robust exchange of views. We hope you enjoy it. That’s 760 inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents of all ages.[27][25] This incarceration rate was similar to the average incarceration levels in the Soviet Union during the existence of the infamous Gulag system, when the Soviet Union’s population reached 168 million, and 1.2 to 1.5 million people were in the Gulag prison camps and colonies (i.e. about 714 to 892 imprisoned per 100,000 USSR residents, according to numbers from Anne Applebaum and Steven Rosefielde).[37][38] Some of the latter Soviet Union’s yearly incarceration rates from 1934 to 1953, however, likely were the world’s historically highest for a modern age country.[39] In The New Yorker article The Caging of America (2012), Adam Gopnik writes: “Over all, there are now more people under ‘correctional supervision’ in America—more than six million—than were in the Gulag under Stalin at its height.”[40] Adam Gopnik, “The Caging of America”

Eiynah is a Pakistani-Canadian blogger, illustrator, and host of the "Polite Conversations" podcast. She rides the social tension of both publicly criticizing Islam as an ideology, as well as anti-Muslim bigotry, which is an ongoing struggle for nuance in today's climate. In our conversation we processed through the movement of the "Intellectual Dark Web" and shared our critical sentiment of individuals like Dave Rubin, Jordan Peterson, Maajid Nawaz, Sam Harris, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who have each been strong proponents within this new tribal identity. I've been at a loss for words....so devastated and shocked by this sudden, tragic loss. I just spoke to him for my previous episode...I can't believe we won't hear another MB laugh again. It has been an honour to have laughed with him. I wanted to say a few words and share some of my favourite clips of Michael on Polite Conversations. RIP, friend.
It's easy to think that the art of conversation is a skill that was bestowed on a happy few, and others cursed with turbid tongues. . While it's true that some individuals simply have a great portion of innate natural charm, the art of conversation is a skill in which everyone one can become competent. . You may never have a silver-tongue, but you can learn to converse in ways that make you a valued party guest, set you apart at social or business functions, impress the ladies, and win you new friends. . In this Podcast, are valuable Tips to help you have polite conversations with ease. . Enjoy this Podcast and invite your friends to listen as well. Thank you.

In this episode I speak with Eiynah about the challenges of speaking about Islam and Muslims in our current political climate. We recorded this conversation on Wednesday evening, March 20, just five days after the horrific terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, that claimed the lives of 50 people. How can we talk about Islam and Muslims without being a bigot? On the one hand, individuals absolutely have the right to challenge and criticize and type of ideology or belief, including Islam, especially in open, democratic societies. On the other hand, we cannot separate our criticism of religion from the social and political context in which we make those critiques. Timing and tone do matter. While all critiques may be permitted, not all comments are advisable at every moment if we care about the lives of those who are most effected.Ideology has consequences, as we have seen with acts of terror that run the ideological spectrum from Nazism, to white nationalism and identitarianism (such as the ideology that animated the Christchurch, New Zealand terrorist), to Islamism and more. Islam is not a single thing or a unified way of seeing the world any more than Christianity is. Eiynah is an ex-Muslim of Pakistani background who was raised in Saudi Arabia and now lives in Toronto, Canada. She is a prolific podcaster, blogger, and commentator at the intersection religion, politics, and human rights.LINKSNice Mangos website | http://nicemangos.blogspot.com/Polite Conversations podcast | https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/polite-conversations/id1086199663?mt=2Follow Eiynah on Twitter | http://www.twitter.com/nicemangosLife After God website | http://www.lifeaftergod.orgSupport this podcast by becoming a member | http://www.patreon.com/lifeaftergodFollow Life After God on Twitter | http://www.twitter.com/ourlifeaftergodFollow Ryan Bell on Twitter | http://www.twitter.com/ryanjbell
Like Netflix, we're going to soak this thing for all its worth. How many hours of your life can we steal making you click through episodes trying to find easter eggs?! Really though, for all the innovations in this episode, it feel painfully underdeveloped in the arguably unethical way it makes use of tropes that are harmful to people with mental illness, and it felt like that deserved a main segment discussion. So we talk about those ethical problems in boring old timey linear fashion, as well as related ethical issues in how to balance representation challenges with the desire to make compelling art. Basically, ethicists see the world the same way as the SDNY; it's all our jurisdiction. Welp, for better or worse, you're in the timeline where the will of the collective has pulled the pod suddenly back to Black Mirror. Everyone spent some portion of their holiday deep in some Bandersnatch, and we're here to stack meta analysis on meta analysis till the whole thing becomes a satirical singularity, which I'm now calling a Satirelarity (that's terrible, don't ever use that). If you feel like this episode doesn't address the problems of Bandersnatch enough, keep refreshing and another episode from a connected timeline will be along. I feel like if there’s any group of people who have to feel like political footballs basically all the time its gotta be ex-Muslims. Especially ex muslims who tend toward the leftist end of the political spectrum. I’ve seen all manner of white people and never muslims explaining to ex Muslims what their background is, how they’re supposed to feel, how they’re ex-Muslimming wrong, and to be honest it just looks super effing exhausting. So to have a talk about it we have atheist Twitter’s favorite ex Muslim, host of the Polite Conversations podcast, Eiynah. https://soundcloud.com/politeconversations https://twitter.com/NiceMangos
Sex, Booze, Ramadan & Eating Disorders...are not things u would usually see grouped together... But here on Polite Conversations, I do love exploring a weird intersection. Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic Calendar, and considered one of the most sacred. It’s observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting from sunrise to sunset. Not even a drink of water is permitted during the fast. It's like Lent...on steroids. ---- Join me this episode for a discussion on the many inconsistencies and hypocrisies I’ve come across during Ramadan in both Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. I end the episode with a story of Ramadan’s connection with eating disorders. This is a perspective I have rarely seen Ramadan explored from, and it’s one I’ve thought about often…so here it is, in episode form. ---- Articles mentioned in the episode:https://www.bbc.com/news/health-33479309 https://www.independent.co.uk/student/news/ramadan-and-eating-disorders-fasting-for-allah-or-anorexia-10305579.html http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-06-24/living-with-an-eating-disorder-during-ramadan/8646128 Here are the links from the articles I mentioned in the episode and some extra ones too: Islam and Eating Disorders Blog: http://waragainsteatingdisorder.com/ Australia:https://thebutterflyfoundation.org.au/ UK:https://www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk/ USA:https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/help-support/contact-helpline Canada:http://www.edac-atac.ca/ http://nedic.ca/ ---- If you enjoy the show please consider supporting via Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/nicemangos The show is entirely listener funded, and wouldn't exist without you. ----
Today we have a special guest Eiynah from the Polite Conversations podcast. We cover so many topics including: what some of Eiynah's experiences were in the Middle East, current labels used by SJW's, the problems with the skeptic community, tribalism, and much more.Eiynah:Twitter: @NiceMangoshttps://soundcloud.com/politeconversations Hero of the Week:Blair Bravermanhttps://www.blairbraverman.com/What I've Learned From Having A Trans Partner
For the very few smart people remaining who don't yet follow Eiynah on @nicemangos, she is a Pakistani-Canadian, who has also lived in Saudi Arabia. She is an illustrator and a podcaster at the very popular ‘Polite Conversations‘ podcast and she is well-known as a critic of both the more conservative tenets within Islam and also of anti-Muslim bigots.
Eiynah is a Pakistani-Canadian illustrator/blogger who writes and draws about sexuality in South Asia (mostly Pakistan), religion, politics, feminism, godlessness. Her podcast is Polite Conversations. Follow her on twitter @nicemangos or Facebook and support her work on Patreon. Joining me today is Eiynah! You may know her from her podcast Polite Conversations or from a very active and insightful Twitter account, @NiceMangos. First up we talk a bit about the jarring experience I had of seeing fully burka'd women in Europe and what, if anything, can anyone do about it. Then we talk about the hatred that Eiynah has been the subject of from multiple fronts. Some of the discussion gets a little particular to Twitter. I did my best to make sure Eiynah spelled it out for the uninitiated, but I highly recommend checking out her blog where she is able to spell this out in more detail. Find it here! In today's episode, we look at a recent Supreme Court decision that could have wide-ranging effects on future trials. We begin, however, by "Breakin' Down the Law" regarding House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes. Did he just violate the law Republicans kept trying to insist applied to Hillary Clinton's emails? (Yes.) In our main segment, we delve into a recent Supreme Court decision, Pena-Rodriguez v. Colorado, in which the Court held that a defendant's Sixth Amendment right to a fair trial means that jurors must be free to report blatant racial bias in otherwise-private jury deliberations, even if the law says otherwise. How the Court came down on this issue is also reflective of the split on the Supreme Court between the originalist justices and the mainstream ones. Next, long-time friend of the show Eric Brewer returns with a question about felon voting rights. Finally, we end with a brand new Thomas Takes the Bar Exam question #17 that asks about the common law behind "as is" used cars. Remember that TTTBE issues a new question every Friday, followed by the answer on next Tuesday's show. Don't forget to play along by following our Twitter feed (@Openargs) and/or our Facebook Page and quoting the Tweet or Facebook Post that announces this episode along with your guess and reason(s)! Recent Appearances: Andrew and Thomas were guests on Eiynah's podcast, Polite Conversations, Panel Discussion #6 talking about liberals vs. conservatives on free speech. Give it a listen! Show Notes & Links Here's the story on Devin Nunes's disclosures of confidential intelligence briefings to the press and to White House flacks. And this is the text of 18 U.S.C. § 793(f)(1), which is indeed the same statute Republicans sought to use against Hillary Clinton. This counts as irony, right? Today's episode continues our look at appellate jurisprudence, Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, and the philosophy of originalism that Andrew continues to insist is so extreme ast o be disqualifying. First, our much-beloved segment "Are You A Cop?" returns in triumphant fashion with an examination of a claim being raised by many Trump supporters; namely, that the 9th Circuit is "the most reversed appellate court in the country" with a "90% reversal rate." Is this claim true? (No.) In the main segment, we take a look at the Supreme Court's just-released opinion in Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District. Is this a "unanimous reversal" of Gorsuch on appeal while Gorsuch's nomination remains pending?? As usual, we correct the news sources that got this story wrong and explain its significance to you. Next, we answer a question/comment from Ed Brayton, author of the "Dispatches From The Culture Wars" blog, who has a different take on originalism. Finally, we end with the answer to Thomas Takes the Bar Exam question #16 about apparent authority. Show Notes & Links This Politifact Article debunks the claim that the 9th Circuit is the "most reversed" appellate court. This is the text of the Endrew F v. Douglas County School Dist. opinion just issued by the Supreme Court. And here is the Endrew F opinion from the 10th Circuit (not authored by Gorsuch) that was reversed. Finally, this is the Luke P decision that was by Gorsuch discussed in the episode. And by contrast, this is Urban v. Jefferson County School Dist., 89 F.3d 720 (1996), which you can read for yourself and see that Gorsuch deliberately misconstrued. (BBC) Join me as I speak to a former member, Zubin Madon, of a rarely heard about religion. In India and Pakistan they are a small and mysterious, dwindling community. We discuss how the religion has evolved over the years, the openness that reform has brought (psst..Islam, take some notes), how this community came to be in India/Pakistan, the reasons their population is declining, some bizarre, fascinating traditions involving "The Tower of Silence" and ... *vultures*. It's been quite a wild ride to have this episode of Polite Conversations returned to me. It was returned butchered, with some really nasty messages about me, inserted into it. Some random ads were placed in as well. So, the quality/flow of sound is not great at some parts, but bear with us. Just being able to release this once endangered episode is quite a big deal. Just like Jesus, Polite Conversations is resurrected this Easter Sunday. :) After what I've been through, it *is* a miracle! :P Join me and Ali Rizvi as we discuss ball-gags, burqas, going commando in Mecca, and much more! Last year I lost an entire 90 minute interview with Toronto-based blogger and activist Eiynah. Since then, I’ve bought a separate recorder to ensure I have at least two copies of each interview! Eiynah (@NiceMangos) is back and she talks to me about the first episode of her new podcast, Polite Conversations with Maryam Namazie. It was taken down from Youtube twice for no good reason. Rather Kafkaesque. We touch on how ex-Muslims and moderate Muslims are being silenced by the Western left and popular media. We talk about feminism, too!
