The language of the Bible has often been invoked in American political discourse through the centuries. Scripture has been quoted by suffragists and secessionists, invoked in arguments for (and against) American independence, the Civil War, and each succeeding conflict, and cited by virtually every President across parties. So how should we discern a faithful application of scripture in public life from instrumentalizing the Bible for political purposes? What can we learn from America's history of using the Bible in politics?[insert quote]Kaitlyn Schiess, theologian, speaker, and author of the new book, The Ballot and The Bible: How Scripture Has Been Used and Abused In American Politics and Where We Go From Here, joined us on Friday, September 15 to help us examine America's history of using (and misusing) biblical language in politics, and explore what we can learn from the times Scripture has been wisely applied as well as egregiously misused. With a wide-ranging discussion covering history, hermeneutics, and political theology, she helped us consider the proper use of the Bible in political discourse. We hope this conversation sparks your creativity and encourages you to look differently at the small matters of life that matter a lot. This podcast is an edited version of an online conversation recorded in 2023. How do Bible passages written thousands of years ago apply to politics today? What can we learn from America's history of using the Bible in politics? How can we converse with people whose views differ from our own?Our Guest this week Kaitlyn Schiess is the author of The Ballot and the Bible: How Scripture Has Been Used and Abused in American Politics and Where We Go from Here,  where she explores these questions and more. She unpacks examples of how Americans have connected the Bible to politics in the past, highlighting times it was applied well and times it was egregiously misused. Schiess combines American political history and biblical interpretation to help readers faithfully read Scripture, talk with others about it, and apply it to contemporary political issues--and to their lives. Rather than prescribing what readers should think about specific hot-button issues, Schiess outlines core biblical themes around power, allegiance, national identity, and more. Our Guests Bio, written by Kaitlyn:I'm a writer, author, and a doctoral student at Duke Divinity School studying political theology, ethics, and biblical interpretation. In 2020, Kaitlyn's book The Liturgy of Politics: Spiritual Formation for the Sake of Our Neighbor created quite a stir. She has also written about theology, politics, and culture in outlets such as Christianity Today, The New York Times, Sojourners, several other national publications and is rather prolific on Twitter! We cover a lot of ground in this conversation. Part of Kaitlyn's journey that is unique is that not a lot of people start out at Liberty Univ. for undergrad and then end up at Duke Divinity for their doctoral work. It was interesting to hear Kaitlyn's thoughts about where many of her Liberty classmates stand in terms of politics and theology today. We also talked about "What story am I buying into?" and how our paradigms affect how we interpret what's happening in the world. We went on to assess some of the problems that ail our culture in the church and more broadly, and we explore prescriptions of how we might be able to move forward. https://kaitlynschiess.com/ https://twitter.com/KaitlynSchiess https://www.instagram.com/kaitlynschiess/ https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780830848300

Some people say you shouldn't talk politics and religion in polite conversation, but author Kaitlyn Schiess would (politely) beg to differ. In fact, she's written a book about the connections between faith and politics. Kaitlyn is a writer and a popular Christian voice on Twitter. A ThD student at Duke Divinity School (where she's studying political theology, ethics, and biblical interpretation), she previously earned a ThM in systematic theology from Dallas Theological Seminary. Kaitlyn's book, The Liturgy of Politics: Spiritual Formation for the Sake of Our Neighbor, was released by InterVarsity Press during the last presidential election year. In this episode, Heather and Kaitlyn discuss what it means to deconstruct false gospels, the difference between politics and partisanship, and the importance of using discernment in selecting the news sources we consume. Social media can be a really great place to build relationships with others, and Kaitlyn has done this so well, even while discussing difficult topics like theology and politics. She is a great resource for all of us on how we can do this better. Join us for this conversation with writer Kaitlyn Schiess as we discuss her journeys around political thought, spiritual formation, and life as a graduate student in new place. "How can I recognize the inherent goodness of contemplating God shaping me now?" — Kaitlyn Schiess I've been a fan of Kaitlyn Schiess for a while now. Her book, The Liturgy of Politics: Spiritual Formation for the Sake of Our Neighbor (IVP 2020), has some very helpful things to say about how and why God's Spirit is at work in us and — surprise! — it isn't primarily for our own benefit. I have appreciated Kaitlyn's voice in the conversations at The Holy Post, a podcast she frequents as a commentator and, recently, as an interviewer. I am so encouraged to find a young sharp woman at the center of important conversations these days speaking candidly and thoughtfully about what it looks like to love God, his Word, and his world. And I look forward to the ways she will provide leadership in the Church and in our communities in the days ahead. May God increase her tribe! So, it was a treat for me to interview Kaitlyn and as others have said, I look forward to seeing where God will call her in the future. — Karen Hice Guzmán For show notes or more information please visit our article at The Well. I love when she speaks directly to women and says “You are made in the image of God just as much as men are. And the commission that's given to you at the beginning of creation - to rule and reign and steward creation, to be God's representatives on earth - that's the same commission for you. Similarly to our approach before, the goal of this episode is not to promote partisan ideologies and platforms but rather to encourage genuine reflection about how, as followers of Christ, we think and engage politically. Definitions are knocked out toward the beginning of the show for the major topics we cover, primarily: Liturgy & Spiritual Formation. Everyone of us is formed by the rituals we repeat whether they are conscious or not and Kaitlyn (and Scripture) remind us that these are things we ought to take an active role in determining for ourselves if we are to avoid being shaped by the culture around us. Kaitlyn shares some key ways churches can engage their neighbors and why they must talk about politics. Kaitlyn's story reminds us everything is spiritual and forming even if we neglect it. Listen to Kaitlyn's story today! Stories Kaitlyn shared: Growing up as a military kid moving around Her faithful parents who were highly involved in church Changing her perspective on giving her life to Christ Feeling God's peace, comfort, and presence at a camp meeting Reading the Bible in a year as a way of developing her faith The camaraderie that came from the debate team Recognizing what an idol performance was for her Serving at camp with middle schoolers and how one week changed her life The pastor who began to open doors for her Choosing to go to seminary instead of law school Why she wrote the Liturgy of Politics How churches can engage their neighbors Why churches must be talking about politics Great quotes from Kaitlyn: You think people in your churches know things but they don't and it blows their minds. The political participation that people are involved in is forming them spiritually. If you're not talking about politics, you're not being apolitical. You're actually just reinforcing whatever bad theology people have. Start with taking care of your soul.
