The beginning of February is my opportunity to again speak with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com about studies and articles she has brought to our attention over the past month. Ellen and I spoke about the findings of Dr. Diana Mager and her team at the University of Alberta regarding food insecurity in families with a celiac child or children. This is something I covered in a recent podcast with Dr. Mager and something that will help shape the response of Celiac Canada to this issue. Food Insecurity for Celiac Children | A Canadian Celiac Podcast Cost of Gluten-Free Diet Contributing to Food Insecurity Ellen was able to give us a firsthand introduction to a link between Liver Disease and Celiac Disease that was looked at in a recent study. Celiac Disease Linked to Chronic Liver Disease We also talked about the new recipe phenomenon called egg bites or breakfast cups, which can easily be made gluten free. Ellen has given us the recipe from a trusted gluten free bakery near her. As well, we noted that M&M Food Markets has added a new gluten free dinner entrée to their extensive list of gluten free food. Recipe Alert! Breakfast Egg Cups by Wild Poppy Bistro & Bakery New to M&M Food Market Introduces Thai Chicken Peanut Curry Ellen mentioned Celiac Canada's webpage regarding information for healthcare professionals in managing patients with celiac disease, which many people have found helpful in dealing with their doctors. www.celiac.ca/healthcare-professionals/management/ Sue's Websites and Social Media – Podcast https://acanadianceliacpodcast.libsyn.com Podcast Blog – https://www.acanadianceliacblog.com Email – acdnceliacpodcast@gmail.com Celiac Kid Stuff – https://www.celiackidstuff.com Baking Website – https://www.suesglutenfreebaking.com Instagram - @suesgfbaking YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUVGfpD4eJwwSc_YjkGagza06yYe3ApzL Email – sue@suesglutenfreebaking.com

I always get excited to speak with a guest who can fill in some of the blanks in my knowledge about food insecurity for Celiacs in Canada. I work with Celiac Canada to help educate foodbanks to be able to serve our community better. Dr. Diana Mager and her team at the University of Alberta have, in the past, taken a great interest in the nutritional needs of celiac children in Canada (Podcast Episode 292 - https://bit.ly/Ep292CeliacKidsFoodGuide). More recently Dr. Mager and her team have completed a cross-Canada survey of families to determine the food insecurity issues in families with celiac children. Her article was recently published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition and even made the front cover! You can read the abstract here - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39467010/ Given the causes we know for food insecurity, Dr. Mager was able to identify other issues that were making it difficult for families to maintain a healthy gluten free diet for their celiac children. On procedurals like Law & Order SVU, viewers often note that the plots are ripped from the headlines. It's tempting to think that news and TV dramas give us an understanding of the reality of investigating serious crimes. In fact, few know what it's like to investigate these harrowing cases. Detective Kim Mager, a 30-year veteran of the Ashland City Police in Ohio, knows firsthand what it's like to take down some of the worst criminals imaginable. In A Hunger to Kill: A Serial Killer, a Determined Detective, and the Quest for a Confession That Changed a Small Town Forever, co-written with New York Times bestselling author Lisa Pulitzer, she reveals how she closed in on—and broke—one of Ohio's most infamous serial killers. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Detective KIM MAGER is a 30-year law enforcement officer who retired from the Ashland City Police in 2022. Mager works for a prosecutor's office and still holds a law enforcement commission. Mager specializes in sex offenses, violent crime, and child abuse and has investigated over 2,000 cases. She has a BA from Ashland University and graduated Top Gun of her Police Academy. Mager is married to husband, Dan, and they have three children, Corbin, Macy, and Reed. LISA PULITZER is a former correspondent for the New York Times. She is the author of more than a dozen non-fiction titles, including New York Times bestseller Stolen Innocence (with Elissa Wall) and Portrait of a Monster: Joran van der Sloot, a Murder in Peru, and the Natalee Holloway Mystery (with Cole Thompson).
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this podcast I speak with Dr. Diana Mager. Dr. Mager has been on the podcast previously while she and her team were working hard to formulate a Food Guide for Celiac Children and was soliciting input from parents across the country. The Food Guide is now available and that gives me a great opportunity to invite Dr. Mager back to ask her some questions on the team's findings as well as how parents can both get and use the Food Guide and its related resources. The Gluten Free Food Guide is freely available for download to anyone who would like to access it via: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CpMuC2kIU43T3MGAMnnrfsqgACUjOtC_/view Dr. Diana Mager will be providing free education about the gluten free food guide in a webinar with Celiac Canada. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's the beginning of December, so that means I get to chat with my friend Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com. This month Ellen and I chat about the two podcasts I did with Caleigh McAulay of Celiac Canada about current myths surrounding both celiac disease and the gluten free diet. Ellen received lots of response when she posted about this topic. As well we talk about the recent national conference from Celiac Canada and some of the new things we learned.
