Kaitlyn Schiess (Curiously Kaitlyn, The Holy Post) opens up about a pivotal conversation with someone at her church that reshaped how she approaches the tricky intersection of politics and faith. She dives into the power of asking meaningful questions to get at the heart of others—even when beliefs feel under attack. Sharing stories from her own journey of teaching kids in church, wrestling with tough theological questions, and navigating heated debates about the Bible and American politics, Schiess reminds us how curiosity and a steady heart can pave the way for deeper connections and insights. Kaitlyn Schiess is a theologian, podcast host, and author of The Ballot and the Bible: How Scripture Has Been Used and Abused in American Politics and Where We Go From Here. She is currently pursuing a PhD in political theology at Duke Divinity School.
We're getting candid in our interview with Friko. Friko is the duo Nike Kapetan and Bailey Minzenberger hailing from Chicago's long lineage of DIY and indie rock music. Their debut album Where We've Been, Where We Go From Here came out earlier this year and sees the band merging elements of post-punk and chamber-pop and experimental rock. The band is headed out on tour across the U.S. with Royel Otis this fall and will also be headlining in the UK later this year. We talk to frontman Niko about how he and Bailey collaborate as multi-instrumentals in the songwriting process, how the band is setting out to make the world a better place through music, and how Niko is challenging himself to write more honest lyrics that encapsulate the highs and lows of life. The language of the Bible has often been invoked in American political discourse through the centuries. Scripture has been quoted by suffragists and secessionists, invoked in arguments for (and against) American independence, the Civil War, and each succeeding conflict, and cited by virtually every President across parties. So how should we discern a faithful application of scripture in public life from instrumentalizing the Bible for political purposes? What can we learn from America's history of using the Bible in politics?[insert quote]Kaitlyn Schiess, theologian, speaker, and author of the new book, The Ballot and The Bible: How Scripture Has Been Used and Abused In American Politics and Where We Go From Here, joined us on Friday, September 15 to help us examine America's history of using (and misusing) biblical language in politics, and explore what we can learn from the times Scripture has been wisely applied as well as egregiously misused. With a wide-ranging discussion covering history, hermeneutics, and political theology, she helped us consider the proper use of the Bible in political discourse. We hope this conversation sparks your creativity and encourages you to look differently at the small matters of life that matter a lot. This podcast is an edited version of an online conversation recorded in 2023. "The power of acting is really sacred. Acting is a way to reveal back to human beings, the human condition. It's the heart of empathy. This is why I always say I'm going to go to Congress and teach everybody how to act. Can you imagine these congressmen and women? They would have to look opposite their enemy, and really take in another human being."- Anthony Meindl on The Modern Spirituality Show Join Theosophist Benjamin W. Decker and Acting Coach/Director Anthony Meindl for a riveting dialogue including the following:
When I was in my teens, I got the opportunity to be part of a theatre class. The Director at the time was short one male role so I had the chance to be exposed to the art of the stage for the first time. It was a defining moment for me as I realized I genuinely had a talent for it. But then Life happened. Coming from a traditional background where academics are THE priority above all else including creative endeavours, added to the fact that I my grades were in the dumps, my parents drew a line in the sand and I had to close the curtains on the whole experience. Fast forward a few years and many life experiences later, and I still hold a sincere respect for the art of acting. Where one can draw from his or her emotions, experiences, trauma, joy, victories, failures and eventually portray a fleshed-out character or persona, this not only takes quite a bit of creative expertise but most importantly, a tremendous amount of courage. I've learned that in many ways, we as human beings are deathly afraid of discomfort. Anything that steps outside of that familiarity of our comfort zone is a lifeline we tend to hold onto, sometimes against our best interest. As my next guest has allowed me to see through his resounding body of work, the thrill of being a creative, whether through acting, painting or otherwise, is that the unknown is an essential part of the journey and we get the opportunity to shape it however we desire. A message of accountability and audacity that totally resonates with our mission here on the podcast. Anthony Meindl is an award-winning director, writer, actor, and acting coach. Among his numerous achievements and accolades, Anthony wrote and directed "Where We Go From Here", which premiered at Outfest in 2019 at the famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. It won Best Screenplay at Q-Films Long Beach and the Jury Award at NYC's East Village Queer Film Festival, and was acquired by HULU. He is the founder and artistic director of the Anthony Meindl's Actor's Workshop which he bravely started some 26 years ago in his apartment with 6 students and the desire to help actors understand a more modern and simpler approach to the work. He has been a passionate advocate in helping actors everywhere understand their worth and advocate for themselves and their own creativity. He has broken myths around the business and what often holds actors back. His mission has always been to help marginalized people and Artists of Color and Trans, Non-Binary, and Queer-identifying actors who often have had little access to training and opportunities in the business. He now has the largest scene study studio in Los Angeles and locations in 10 other cities around the world: New York, London, Vancouver, Toronto, Atlanta, Sydney, Chicago, Copenhagen and Cape Town. He is the author of five books; the best-selling creativity book AT LEFT BRAIN TURN RIGHT, self-improvement ALPHABET SOUP FOR GROWN-UPS, acting guide BOOK THE F#©KING JOB!, his memoir, YOU KNEW WHEN YOU WERE 2, and the latest, UNSTUCK, a creativity manual. His self-published books have sold over 28,000 copies. Anthony Meindl is an acting coach and has published several books about acting, such as Book The F*cking Job and his latest, Unstuck. Anthony is also the host of a podcast for actors, “In The Moment”, and there is a reason he calls it that. Throughout our conversation that was a phrase that came up again and again: actors have to be in the moment, they have to live in the moment. And as actors, we know full well that means we have to listen, truly listen. Anthony will tell you, “If you're not listening to your partner then you're never going to act.” But he goes on to explain that the listening isn't the hard part. All of us can do that. He says, “the listening opens up the feelings and the expressing of those feelings is hard.” That, he says, takes courage, takes bravery, and it takes choosing yourself. Anthony Meindl is an award-winning director, writer, actor, acting coach, entrepreneur, author and inspirational speaker. As an acting teacher, he's known for revolutionizing a more modern understanding of acting training. He founded Anthony Meindl's Actor Workshop in 1997 and has schools in 10 cities around the world: Los Angeles, New York, London, Vancouver, Toronto, Atlanta, Sydney, Chicago, Copenhagen and Cape Town. He has been an inspirational speaker, sharing the stage with such luminaries as Jim Carrey, Jack Kornfield, and Tom Shadyac. As a filmmaker, Anthony has received a number of awards and acclaim. On this episode of the Futurum Tech Podcast - Interview Series I am joined by Cristina Rodriguez, Vice President for the Data Center Group and General Manager of the Wireless Access Network Division for Intel. Cristina is part of the global organization that is driving change through 5G network build-out, edge computing, improving AI, and improving radio access networks. It's an exciting space to be in right now as the demand for faster networks and easier access to data increases across enterprise organizations. Our conversation covered several aspects of network transformation including a broad overview of digital connectivity and networking. We also explored how Intel has focused on the transformation of the network and the importance of that role this year. 2020, while crazy in a lot of aspects, really created new opportunities for the growth of 5G and network transformation. The Transformation of Network Infrastructure My conversation with Cristina also revolved around the following: How virtualization and transformation of the network will enable opportunities in the future. The role Intel has played in transforming the network architecture from core to edge to access. Specifically the few things the company has focused on in the last few years to deliver this transformation to customers. An exploration of the partnerships Intel has made to achieve the core to edge network transformation. Intel's thinking around RAN transformation and what they anticipate for 2021. A brief overview of Intel's partnerships with Amdocs, Verizon and VMware. Where We Go From Here 2020 proved that we need faster connectivity speeds which means we need better networks and stronger infrastructure. Intel realizes this and is partnering with various organizations to build and deliver the solutions that we need. If you'd like to read more about what Intel is doing in this area, check out their website. These changes will impact all of us in the coming years. If you are involved in network transformation in your organization make sure to put this on your ‘must listen' list. Disclaimer: This show is for information and entertainment purposes only. Some folks get so nervous about going into a job interview or an audition, that their minds can’t stop thinking about those over the top demanding directors from films like A Chorus Line, All that Jazz, The Producers, Flashdance and even Showgirls.Although those scenes certainly create some horrifying expectations, how real are they? Are dancers supposed to pick up all those moves in seconds? If we slut it up, will we break down the icy wall of the establishment? I really need this job!Today we’re talking to acting teacher, filmmaker and director Anthony Meindl about how to put all expectations aside and be your authentic self- in your everyday life or at your job, even if you’re auditioning to be a star on Broadway.Listen as we chat with Anthony about growing up gay in the Midwest and other fabulous stories from his new memoir, You Knew When You Were 2 and his feature film Where We Go From Here which explores relationships forever changed by gun violence including the Pulse Nightclub shooting.FEATURED BOOK: Anthony Meindl - You Knew When You Were 2: A Backstage History of Match Game: https://amzn.to/36W90yRTHANKS TO OUR SPONSORS: Uniform Teethhttps://www.uniformteeth.comBook your free consultation, get $150 off with code FEAST150
On this episode of The Six Five – Insiders Edition Patrick Moorhead and I are joined by Daniel Rodriguez, Corporate Vice President for the Network Platforms Group for Intel. Dan is leading the global organization that aims to drive network transformation through both 5G network build-out and edge computing — both are hot topics right now as the demand for faster networks and easier access to data increases across enterprise organizations. Our conversation covered several aspects of the current status of the 5G network infrastructure including the role Intel has played in laying the foundation for the rollout of agile and scalable infrastructure. We are at a pivotal point in network transformation, as Dan calls it, because we are going to see the pervasiveness of AI through the cloud, the data center, and other areas. Communication service providers will deliver traditional network functions but new AI-based edge services. The opportunities in several industries will be exciting to watch. The State of 5G Network Infrastructure Our conversation with Dan also revolved around the following: Intel’s role in Access Core, RAN and Far Edge. How 5G is expanding Intel’s product portfolio from the data center into the network and out to the edge. The role 5G is playing the full breadth of Intel solutions including ASICs and FPGAs. Real world examples where 5G proliferation has taken hold. Where We Go From Here We are watching enterprise organizations expand their use of technologies like AI and IoT which are in turn creating a massive amount of data. This is where the true value of 5G networks and edge networks lie. Organizations need to be able to store data closer to the source to be able to process and utilize it faster. Intel realizes this, and is building solutions that deliver just what these organizations around the globe need. Every time we talk to Dan, we are continually awed by the speed at which Intel is releasing these new technologies and the progress they are making in the field. Where We Go From Here
This was the second week of "Where We Go From Here." THis talk was originally given on 01/22/16. So, we once again are looking at the first 3 chapters 1 Corinthians to answer that question implied in the title of the series. This particular talk centers on 1 Corinthians 1:10-17. Also I'd love to connect to some of you who are listening to this podcast. I'd love to hear from you and feel free to ask any questions you may have. Email me at natecspeaks@gmail.com
This kicks of me preaching for the year and also the series called "Where We Go From Here." I describe the series better in the actual sermon than I could in a few brief sentences here. Nevertheless, we are turning to the first three chapters of 1 Corinthians, in order to go verse by verse through it. We will examine how that relates back to us today and the concept of the series. We start with 1 Corinthians 1:1-9 and the concept of grace.
