In this exhilarating episode, we're back with the fearless bull rider, Josh Birks, as he takes us on a wild journey through his rodeo career, filled with high-flying adventures and unexpected mishaps.Josh shares the tale of his sponsorship with VJV, the owners of the sale yards in Canada. He hatched a plan to attend both the Ponoka Pro Rodeo, the second-largest rodeo in Canada, and a PBR event in Saskatchewan on the same day. With a bull ride at Ponoka followed by a chartered plane ride, things got interesting. On the flight, Josh and his mates decided to enjoy some whiskey, and even against explicit instructions, offered some to the pilot. The pilot's unexpected maneuvers during the flight raised tensions, and when they landed, the owner of VJV was waiting to give Josh an earful. After returning to Ponoka, the night took another unexpected turn as Josh found himself in a fight, coming to the aid of a mate. The police arrived and questioned them, but the boys used their black eyes as evidence of their involvement in bull riding rather than the brawl. All of this drama unfolded while Josh was wearing his sponsorship shirt, and VJV threatened to cancel his sponsorship if he didn't ride a 90 on his next bull. Fortunately, Josh delivered and rode over 90, securing his sponsorship.Josh also shares a hilarious and daring plan involving his idol, Scott Schiffner. While hanging out with friends and BB guns, Josh decided that the moment Scott walked through the door, he would shoot him with a BB gun to ensure he'd never forget him.Throughout the episode, Josh provides insights into bull riding, sharing that he often felt more confident on his second ride than the first and that he preferred bulls that bucked out of his hand. He emphasizes the importance of staying forward and allowing the bull to do the work. Josh also reveals that he often assessed bulls based on their body shape. The conversation takes a somber turn as Josh reflects on the injuries he's endured in his career, including a broken back, nine broken ribs, and lacerations from a bull standing on him. Despite the pain, Josh lived by the motto, "Play the game, take the pain." However, his rodeo career ultimately came to an end when he found love and became a father.Join us for a heart-pounding and laughter-filled episode as Josh Birks shares his unforgettable rodeo experiences, from wild adventures to challenging moments in the arena.#propertrueyarn Hosted on Acast. Ary Vreeken is the Alberta regional representative for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, a partnership of 15 Canadian churches and church-based agencies working together to end global hunger. It is estimated that up to 828 million people on our planet currently do not have "food security", meaning they do not have regular access to enough nutritious food to live healthy and active lives. Here in Canada, farmers are combatting hunger all around the world by donating the value of crops to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. Some of these collaborative projects have been going on for 40 years, and bring together land owners, seed and fertilizer supply companies and dozens of neighbours and volunteers from nearby rural communities. Our local Bashaw and Ponoka faith community is involved as well, through our support of the United Church of Canada's Mission and Service Fund, and also through some of our congregation members who are grain farmers and actively involved in growing projects that donate proceeds of their harvest to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. There are many ways you can get involved, too. Check out their website to learn more about how the Canadian Foodgrains Bank partners with the United Church of Canada and how you can support this important work.https://foodgrainsbank.ca/ucc/

But we aren't going it alone, we're joined by our first guest--and noted stout aficionado-- Steve! With a new guest also comes a tweaked rating system, where we instead focus on the five C's (creamy, cascade, coffee/chocolate, colour, and content). This ep each of us picked a selected craft stout to drink and rate. First up is John, and due to a shipping issue he was unable to use his original choice, so we pivoted to the reliable MILL STREET COBBLESTONE NITRO STOUT. Our second stout comes courtesy of Steve and his hometown of Ponoka, Alberta: COAL PUSHER STOUT (by Siding 14 Brewing Company). Up next is Alex with his unique Calgary choice: GOOD MORNING VIETNAMESE COFFEE STOUT (by Eighty Eight Brewing Company). Tom concludes our ep with a choice out of Edmonton: KODIAK ISLAND CHOCOLATE OATMEAL STOUT ( by Polar Park Brewing Company). Would you rather be practicing veterinary medicine in a small town or in a big city? If you ask Dr. Trevor Hook, you may find yourself convinced to go with the former! Dr. Trevor Hook took his undergraduate studies in Animal Sciences at the University of Alberta and graduated with honours in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Saskatchewan in 2011. After graduating, he started at Central Veterinary Clinic, a mixed animal practice in Ponoka, AB, where after he developed his skills out of school it didn't take long for him to question whether the grass was greener in other places. He decided to pursue other options back in the city, but quickly found himself drawn back to the shorter commutes, community relationships, and simpler life of being in a small town. In 2015 he became a partner of Central Veterinary Clinic, right before the practice expanded into a new facility in 2016. He remains at the clinic to this day and they have recently established a second location. Trevor received the ABVMA Young Veterinarian of the Year award in 2015 and was selected for the CVMA Emerging Leaders Program Program in 2018 and Central Veterinary Clinic has received multiple awards for its strong mentorship and teaching environment. Trevor has special interest in equine performance horse medicine, orthopedic surgery and dairy herd management. He lives with his wife Deserae have 3 young children and if you don't find him at work, you will find him wrestling with his kids. What do you love and value about church and what have you been missing during this pandemic while church buildings have been closed? In Bashaw and Ponoka we've been carrying on with live streaming Sunday morning services, and we've even added new weekly content including short video reflections, prayers and music meditations, but the disruption and changes have still caused us to take a deeper look at what it means to be the church. Interviewing The Divas ...with Tammy Henkelman Join Diva Entrepreneur Candace Gish each week as she speaks with other Divas; women who have made their mark on the business world in modelling entrepreneurship, motherhood and/or mentoring others. This week Candace is speaking with Tammy Henkelman from Ponoka, AB. Tammy has been married for 25 years to her high school sweetheart and they are the parents of two happy young adults. With a background of self-employment in Equine Touch for Health and working with injured horses, she then went on to help other women and their families achieve their financial goals and dreams by being a financial life coach. Tammy says, "In 2011 I decided to make a bucket list. It has really excited me to be able to cross some things off my list. It is empowering!! In Sept 2012, I entered a Transformation challenge to lose weight and ended up second in the transformation out of 15 other participants. This intrigued me to Compete in May 2013 in a Natural Physique Athletics association in the fitness model competition. Wow what a journey!! This has made me see that I can do whatever I set my mind to".
