After great success as the Head Nurse in an experimental Acute Psychiatric Unit in the South Bronx, she was offered the top research position in NYS psychiatry. Instead, because of a permanent disability from the attempt on her life, she left nursing. She has a private practice as a medical intuitive, animal communicator, medium, and psychic. Her studies include homeopathy, nutrition, chemistry, herbology, Applied Kinesiology, and frequency. She has worked with Gestalt, Primal Therapy, Moreno Institute, PsychoDrama, and crisis intervention.   In 1979 she began forty-plus years of working as a consultant with law enforcement agencies as a psychic detective. Early winter morning. The sun hasn't even fully come up yet. You're awake and on your way to a frozen lake outside Toronto, coffee in hand and ready to chainsaw through metres of ice. You arrive to everyone doing breath work, trying to maintain any normal level of body warmth. Chainsaws stop, everyone dresses down, and hops into freezing temperature waters while playing chess, having conversations, listen to the sounds of moving ice. These minutes pass slower than microwave minutes, potentially even slower than stair master minutes dare I say. You hop out the water to smiles, hugs and warm coffee all round. Life changing experiences and the many benefits, both mental and physical, that come with cold submersion. Sounds like Nick McNaughts game! From fun winter mornings cold submerging, to inviting friends and going to viral on CNN globally - now an extremely successful business changing the lives of many many people. We are happy to welcome Nick to the show to share his story, and why we should all start to consider cold submersion as a part of our lifestyle. This time around we’re chatting with Gilbert Bates, author of a book I stumbled across earlier this year called “Love and the Three Levels of Consciousness”. Gil has authored a couple other books on similar themes, but this is the one that we focus on for the purpose of this conversation. The book is about the three levels of the brain, the brainstem, the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex, and how early emotional trauma is registered as a painful sensation in the lower brain, the brainstem. The need to repress this pain from conscious awareness leads to a disconnection between the cognitive brain and the social and emotional brain. Gil posits that the disconnection between these three distinct levels as well as the lack of essential input from the deeper sensing/feeling brain areas are the root cause of nearly all mental illness, and the reason why humans have so much trouble relating to each other in loving ways. We also talk a bit about how to heal ourselves with primal therapy, which is a therapeutic theory and process invented by Dr. Arthur Janov that’s designed to take a subject deep into their social and emotional brain and clear out the traumas that affect us all in some form or another. This book gave me some feels that I hadn’t felt before, and you’ll find out why during the course of our chat here. So let’s cast this pod off into the depths of our primal feel spot, where behind all those painful skeletons lies the uncoiled serpent they’ve been desperately trying to keep you away from. Duane O’Kane is a Registered Clinical Counsellor, Family Therapist, workshop facilitator, teacher and a dynamic public speaker. He is the President of Clearmind International Institute Inc which was formed in 1991.Duane spent many of his early adult years drawn to the cutting edges of the human potential movement, psychology, and the pursuit of spiritual freedom. In addition, he was busy translating this quest into the field of music as a song writer and musician. His early influences included Fritz Perls and Gestalt therapy, Ram Daas, Alan Watts, Primal Therapy, Virgina Satir and Psychodrama, R. D. Laing, and musically the latter day Beatles catalogue. He would spend many weekends frequenting the Cold Mountain Institute in Vancouver (known today as Hollyhock), and the Esalen institute in California. This was his attempt to understand and emancipate himself from the deep wounds of growing up in a violent alcoholic home. His quest to resolve his past ultimately failed as his life fell apart with a personal crisis in relationship, numerous major losses including his father to suicide which resulted in Duane being mired in a deep clinical depression in 1990. Duane discovered ACourse in Miracles while fighting this depression. At the time nothing in his professional repertoire could adequately address his state of abject misery. It opened him to a revolutionary way of thinking that afforded him a view beyond the Hell that he was experiencing to see the Heaven that was held hostage in it. It is Duane's passion and the belief that all that we strive for is held hostage in the middle of every moment, every relationship and every situation. Clearmind was birthed from these principles and continues to evolve with Catherine as co-creator, whom he met in 1996.www.clearmind.com

The word primal refers to a method of psychological healing that examines the difficult and damaging aspects of our childhoods and helps us feel what was too much for us as children back then. This primal method of healing frees us in the present, so that instead of being shut down and defensive, we become open and whole. The purpose of the International Primal Association (IPA) is to explore, study, research, and promote forms of psychotherapy and growth, including those that emphasize uncovering and resolving traumatic experiences, and to develop a community that is congruent with the principles developed from this work.  More info at http://www.primals.org/

An in-depth portrait of John Lennon, told through the audio of Jann Wenner's seminal 1970 New York interview with Lennon for Rolling Stone magazine. It’s 1970 and John Lennon is about to release his first solo album. He’s not long emerged from months of Primal Therapy with its creator, Arthur Janov and he’s about to give his first major interview with Rolling Stone magazine. In the interview, he’ll talk openly about his solo career, the break-up of the world’s most famous band, his marriage and a lot more besides. Wenner and Yoko Ono also look back on the event, but the focus is very much on Lennon, who seems energised by what he sees as his freedom from the Beatles. It’s John Lennon at his most honest - and on occasion, his most abrasive. There is frequent use of strong language.
